- GSXER, on 01/13/2008, -0/+55White screen, blue SEGA logo, a happy monotone voice screaming "SEEEGAAAAA." Those were the days of my carefree childhood. :'(
- LaSepultura, on 01/13/2008, -0/+43I remember my mom was pissed at me for asking her to get 6 AA batteries every week from grocery shopping.
- funkytommyman, on 01/13/2008, -1/+23Step One: Buy a ***** of batteries
- StormCommander, on 01/13/2008, -1/+21The Game Gear is older than half the people posting here.
- PooChunk, on 01/13/2008, -4/+21Get a Dreamcast, download some ROMS and get SMS emulator and boom, GG on the big screen.
- racketboy, on 01/13/2008, -0/+15lol -- did you take it on the road a lot or just not have an AC adapter?
- bubbakja, on 01/13/2008, -0/+14I actually found my old game gear when I was home for xmas. I had my DS Lite with me and laughed at the size difference, I didn't realize how huge that thing was. Unfortunately I couldn't find that awesome fighter pilot game I had for it.
- pardonator, on 01/13/2008, -0/+14Ahhh good times. I had a dodgy power supply connection, If it moved the gamegear would reset. I once sat perfectly still for 3 hours playing Shinobi cross legged, I have never ever had a dead legs like it since, I had no feeling at all and spent the next 20 minutes dragging myself round the house
- BlueSkyfish, on 01/13/2008, -0/+13Download DSMasterPlus and you can play them on the DS

- JigoroKano, on 01/13/2008, -0/+12Sega refactored the Master System as the Game Gear and later, the Genesis as the Nomad.
Both had terrible battery life.
Both shared the same fate. - PacoDG, on 01/13/2008, -0/+11I love my Nomad to death. The death that comes after an hour of play.
- smacksaw, on 01/13/2008, -0/+9The coolest thing I ever picked up was the adapter that allowed Master System carts to be played on the GG. That's where SEGA was so awesome compared to Nintendo - the portable and the console were compatible. No one else did that except NEC with the PCE/TG16 and Sony with the PSP.
- mooninite, on 01/13/2008, -0/+8I still have mine. :D
- Double0Doug, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7Sega had a lot of great innovations that were before their time and either poorly implemented or grossly under marketed… or both.
- Adamesq, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7I preferred the Nomad - no need to buy new carts if you had Genesis. Battery life wasn't a big issue for me since it had DC in. For some reason, when I'm getting ready to go to sleep and want to get a game in, it's more relaxing with a handheld - in that case, the DC-in was great. Nomad also had that cool ability to plug in a second player's controller to the bottom and output to a TV.
- Nobi-Wan, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7I still have mine with a ton of games. I'll probably give it to my kids when I eventually have them. The thing is a tank.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7I remember going on field trips and trying to play the game gear. It rocked because it had a color screen, but i swear we were replacing a ***** load of batteries every hour
- Double0Doug, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7I tried to give mine with all of my peripherals and 15 games to my 8 year old nephews a couple of years ago. He just looked at me like I was from the moon.
- IanPatterson, on 01/13/2008, -0/+7lol, bring batteries
- jamesov89, on 01/13/2008, -0/+6The most non-portable portable.
- demonstar55, on 01/13/2008, -2/+8my Game Gear broke :(
- racketboy, on 01/13/2008, -0/+6Even thought I was a Sega kid, I had a Gameboy growing up. The Gameboy was nice, but I couldn't help but be envious of the friend that had this full-color portable.
I ended up picking one up off of eBay not too long ago (dirt cheap) as a collector's item. I was surprised how big it was after playing on my DS Lite for so long (like bubbakja). - audiooeric, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5Ehh, the Game Gear isn't big.. Check out the Atari Lynx (FIrst Gen).. That thing is W I D E...
Good article and good site! - GeeksofWar, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5Did anyone else own the blue Game Gear. I'm beginning to think I'm the only one that did. Anyone?
- Abominous, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5Yeah no *****.
This thing chewed up so many batteries on me until I bought the AC adapter. - mwatwe01, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5I even bought the TV adapter for the GG. It plugs in where the cart would go. Kind of a crappy picture, but it still works today, 16 years later.
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -1/+6and why would someone need a dreamcast to emulate SMS/GG since you can pretty much emulate both of them on everything except for a toaster
- havokdu, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5It had better screen than the original, backlight free GBA
- AngelicRaver, on 01/13/2008, -0/+5I still have mine AND its broken :(
- smacksaw, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4If you meant to say "the screens were prone to defects and the battery life was poor" you are right. But if you somehow think it was better than Game Boy as far as technical aspects or games, you're wrong. I'm assuming the former and not the latter in an effort to be positive.
- staticblake, on 01/13/2008, -1/+5Joe Montana Football FTW!
- wbeavis, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Still have mine, haven't used it in years. Mostly since the battery packs died. In college (I graduated in 95) once during a power outage I used it as a flashlight. Everyone was jealous because I could watch TV when power was out. The TV Tuner was cool on road trips. Just like with Radio, you got to sample local TV as you got out of range of various stations.
- racketboy, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4They would have stood a chance if it wasn't for the Gameboy powerhouse.
Nobody has really been able to beat Nintendo as the portable game. Sony probably has put up a better fight then Sega (maybe), but that's about it. - MaTT2011, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4Game Gear: The height of modern portable gaming exterior design
Psp,,, pffffft. It aint got jack on the sleek styling of the game gear - johnboyjr, on 01/13/2008, -0/+4give it a year
- rkzda, on 01/13/2008, -0/+32700MAH rechargeables might do pretty good in it.
- alpharaptor, on 01/13/2008, -1/+4the screen would blur with ANY animation
it got hot as hell
fresh batteries lasted half an hour - kevro, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3No, that would be the virtual boy.
- cultist667, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3Fusion emulator plays all sega games except dreamcast.
- BinaryFragger, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3I miss the Master System.
The Shinobi port for it still remains one of my favourite games of all times.
And of course, can't forgot the GameBoy bashing commercials from SEGA:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=nBLr4wbiR6E - daedalous, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3That's pretty ***** ghetto, dude.
- suppah, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3still have mine, with the tv tuner! i remember playing hours and hours of shinoby on that thing :D off dc plug, of course... i had a battery from a scooter as my "portable" battery pack :D
- inactive, on 01/13/2008, -0/+3so does gens
- Shaflugi, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2That's funny, I was the other way around. I had a GG, but didn't really like the games on it. I wanted a Gameboy, but my mom wouldn't buy me one until the GBC rolled around, a year or so later.
- havokdu, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I had the same ***** problem. If I somehow moved the power supply cable because of the faulty connector it would reset the unit.
Most Game Gear games like Sonic didn't have save option, so you had to play it all over again from the start. - GQCarrick, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I had the blue one, I got mine with the Sega Case and Wide Gear. I thought mine said on the package the Sports edition, it came with some hockey game.
- ryan850, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2got one for christmas like 16 years ago.. damn has it been that long?? how depressing. anyway.. i also got a battery charger and 18 batteries... never cared about battery life
i let my brother borrow it... who let his girlfriends little boy borrow it... he broke up with her and never got it back... i'm still bitter - racketboy, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2Not thinking it does Saturn emulation....
- Double0Doug, on 01/13/2008, -0/+2I had the rechargeable battery tube and a coupe of off brand rechargeable that fit into the battery sockets themselves and added handles. The tube lasted 4 or 5 hours on its best day, the other ones lasted two or three hours at best. Thank God they designed it to be playable from an AC connection.
