- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37i loved my game gear. i even had the tv adapter so i could watch tv on it.
- errorjustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Totally! One kid in my grade school class had the TV Adapter and we'd always look on in awe as we checked out the local news and the spanish-language channel while in class. We thought it was the most amazing technology ever, at the time.
- dantidote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28you know what was painful? a couple years back my bro smashed my game gear with a hammer. He has no soul.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Sega only sold the Nomad in Toys R Us stores. That was a really bad idea.
- RubberbandLN6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22I just found the old Game Gear in my closet the other day and it is HUGE, I didn't remember it being as big as it really is. The screen was ahead of it's time though, still looks pretty decent.
- synwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I loved my game gear too, but I have a love-hate relationship with every piece of electronics I...
Okay, fine, once I headbutted the screen in frustration at a game and shattered it, destroying a part of my childhood with my forehead.
Happy? I've been crying inside ever since. - NiceGuyVan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Hey the Nomad ruled
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What? The Nomad is one of the greatest inventions ever.
- glc17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Man. My friend had one with only one game - Lion King. We must have played it like a thousand times, tethered to the wall by the ac adapter of course.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And when the batteries were all loaded up it weighed about as much as three Gameboys, which were also huge. Portables had a whole other standard of what was considered "portable" back then.
- orlyyarly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have a Nomad and I still play it from time to time. I don't see what you have against it, it could connect to a TV, had a port for a second controller and played Sonic, Batman, and F22 like it was nobody's business.
- peruytu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I own the Nomad, and it was one of the greatest portables ever made!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hilarious: "Atari had followed the advice of focus groups who wanted a bigger unit because that gave them "more" for their money."
- serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I remember in the eve of the 16-bit era, Toys r Us dumped the Nomad somewhere between $39.99 - 59.99. I really should've picked one up.. even tho I sold my Genny collection when I bought the SNES. Oh well, SNES and Gensis are both ***** sweet on the the PSP's gorgeous screen. :)
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7ehh, get yourself an Atari Lynx and its **D-CELL** battery pack. :)
Holds 6 D-cells and features a belt clip. Though I imagine your pants would be around your ankles if you tried to use that clip. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember how fast it drained batteries. I think that more than anything kept it from contending with the Gameboy. When Sony launched the PSP and everyone was talking about 3 hours battery life, I kept thinking "Don't they remember what happened to the GameGear?"
I guess people have short term memories when it comes to videogames. - imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The Game Gear had at least one amazing game.
Tails' Adventure, beyond being the only platformer to star Sonic's sidekick, was a darn good platformer/adventure game. For whatever reason, Tails had to fight ducks with bombs. As you advanced, Tails grew more powerful (flying for longer periods of time) and found cooler toys to get to areas that weren't accessible before.
I'd assume it came out towards the end of the system's life, though I'm not sure; all I know is that it came from a garage sale.
That one game alone, though, made the purchase of the Game Gear worthwhile. :) - fletch13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i played the lion king over and over and over......& the power rangers. admit it you loved them too
- Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5there is an excellent gamegear emulator for the archos gmini 400 (which is a portable media player with nearly an identical button layout).
- imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Think game gear was big? The atari lynx was huge like xbox. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Lynx
- probune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I still use my nomad, because my Genesis doesn't work anymore.
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Man, I always wanted the TV adapter, but it was almost as expensive as the Gamegear itself so I never got one.
- jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5None of the phrases you quoted contain metaphors.
"Although the rejection stung like a cactus needle"
This is a similie, not a metaphor.
"a proposal that my mother swatted with Shaq-like authority"
Shaq-like is used as an adjective. No metaphor here.
" it drained batteries the way Jordan drained jumpshots"
This is an analogy. - JoeCool1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Man I loved my game gear. I even had that exact Star Wars game too. If you hold down both buttons (1 and 2) when you turn on Star Wars, a little sega logo would appear for a second before the game started. Never figured out what it did, but I was really proud that I somehow uncovered some cheat of some sort.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I actually saved up my allowance, birthday and christmas money to buy a Lynx. I really liked it at the time.
- Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Game Gear TOTALLY rocked! I still play mine every now and again, it's too bad the damn thing goes through batteries like nothing. Sadly, I only had two good games, Sonic Chaos and some fighting game that's been missing for years.
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the game gear was just ahead of its time or rather the idea they wanted. The color screen, and being portable just wasn't in a good grasp yet. Batteries burned out way too quickly. And color mobile game systems didn't come back till Game Boy Color if I am correct.
- errorjustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Modojo had been around since Jan. 2005.
- BiGdUsTy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Still got my Game Gear i play sonic 2 on it from time to time.
Don't get me started in the battery life of the thing blahhh. - *narf*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had one.. and loved it!! mortal kombat and sonic were awesome..
to counter the battery drain it was best to play it hooked up to a power point - pidge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I loved my TurboExpress (Turbografx portable). What was nice is that it allowed me to take my game console games on the go. No current manufacturer allows this today.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have fond memories of my gamegear. In fact the only thing i didnt really like about the hardware is that when you were playing and you needed to plug it in to the wall doing so would turn the damn thing off in the middle of a game :(
Also, this guy apparently didnt know about the little batterypack handles that nikko or whatever made. Greatest thing for a portable ever- added a ton of rechargable batterly life and doubled as more efficent grips for the machine! - kuken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And when did you fathom the concept of batteries?
- bizzay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had those battery paddles, but the terminals were a loose fit, which made for instant restarts whenever I got into a game and twisted the paddles every so slightly. Very frustrating! I even exchanged them for another set, or modded the terminals to make a tighter fit, but eventually gave up. It was probably one of the reasons I lost interest in the game gear.
- myxyplik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but you could hack ATMs with it like John Connor in T2!
- bayonetblaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3love the ambidextrous feature, that was damn clever
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"the Game Gear coulda been a contender" - What do you mean could've? I think it didn't do so bad. Although it's obvious that the game boy was more popular, game gear was somewhat successful.
Think of this. Game Gear 2. Funny. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had one with enourmous battery packs that held 8 AA batteries in each handle so I could get an amazing 8 hours of gameplay out of it. Still miss those sonic games and Surf Ninjas!!
- dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"a painful look back"
perhaps when thinking about the battery life, but reading over these comments, and thinking back on my experience (very limited, unfortunately - really wanted one, i had a gameboy instead) - why is this painful? it's more nostaligic (sp?) if anything.
great article though, i digg it. - JackAxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had a GameGear and later a Nomad. I also had that adapter that would let me play Sega Master System games on the GG. I couldn't afford the TV tuner at the time. Ahhhh memweees!
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Unless you include the PSP allowing you to plays PS1 games like RIIIIIIIIIIDGE RAAAAAAAAACER!
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3game gear was really cool, it just didnt have that many good games for it. the gameplay was great and the screen was beautiful for its time.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dude I had mine and increaded the hugeness with the battery pack. I got 8 hours on a charge. Frekin awesome. I miss sonic the hedgehog when playin as tails. Then i beat power ranged 21 times. Wow i still remember that. Power Rangers were awesome.

There's multiple worlds to explore, plenty of loops to spin around, and that all important trademark speed."
There were no loops in the 8-bit versions of Sonic. - SurrealDream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had a Game Gear...I can't believe I sold it :S I cherished it!
- beezn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.mcvans.com/catalog/sega_game_gear_system_used_2072619.htm
$35 for a used system that was I believe $200 on launch? sweet! - MikieEars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember playing shinobe(sp?) a lot and also mortal kombat. But I only played when at my dads. At my moms we had sega channel. God how I miss sega channel.
- MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Still have mine, using AC adapter from the Genesis. Still in terriffic working condition. 6 batteries, heck no. I always used the adapter.
Also, thinking of maybe getting a used tv tuner now (never knew there was one). - Hale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I loved my game gear
- aDub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember buying mine with money I had saved from my job delivering newspapers - ah the memories... god I hated my paper route, but I still have my game gear, games, and accessories, awesome portable for it's time, and mine still works great.
