- Shogi, on 08/08/2008, -0/+104If I were tasked with saving the franchise, the first thing I'd do is get rid of everyone but Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Next I'd make sure humans never ever make an appearance in the game aside from Robotnik. Then I'd axe the "Next level you have to play as this character!" *****. Then I'd make a game about Robotnik's plot to steal the chaos emeralds that features Knuckles and Tails a NPCs and focuses on playing as Sonic and wrecking Robotnik's ***** at high ***** speed. No more rails, no more gun toting hedgehogs, and no more ***** extra characters you have to swap to or put up with.
Basically the opposite of everything Sega has done recently. - quamb, on 08/08/2008, -0/+46Sonic (and Sega) could reign king again if they simply:
1) Bring back Green Hill Zone. What happened to this iconic level/world that IS Sonic?? It would be the same if Nintendo never revisited Mushroom Kingdom after Mario Bros.
2) Bring back the Classic Sonic tunes!! Loose the cheesy guitar rock. Seriously, who gives the OK on such crap music??
3) No more B-Grade characters! Tails was good, Knuckles was okay... anything beyond that = lame.
4) Gameplay in 2D. Secret/Special levels for collecting gems in 3D. Just like Sonic 2, but better.
Probably more points to be added, such as bringing back the classic look and feel of the old enemies and levels, loosing the stupid obnoxious voices, NO humans etc. But really, any joe from Digg could direct a team to create a better game then anything Sega has spat out for years. - InuX, on 08/08/2008, -0/+39Sega should use Sonic 2 as a reference. Sonic Advance almost got it right, but the music was pretty bad.
- KMartSheriff, on 08/08/2008, -0/+39Thank you. ***** that "Eggman" *****. It's Dr. Robotnik, end of story.
And ***** Silver Sonic, Cream, and whatever the hell else crap characters that are not Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, or Dr. Robotnik. - inactive, on 08/08/2008, -2/+39My last favorite Sonic game was Sonic Adventure. Damn I miss my Dreamcast.
- Haoie, on 08/08/2008, -2/+38Some games just don't work out so well in 3D.
- Seemefearme, on 08/08/2008, -0/+31The only way they can revitalize the Sonic franchise is to develop a 2D side-scroller much like the originals and use the next gen technology to make it look absolutely amazing. Bring us back to our days playing endlessly to reach the last level, only to die a few stages before hand. I want that again!
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 08/08/2008, -1/+28I would be excited for Unleashed if it weren't for "Werehog."
Seriously Sega, wtf. Get your ***** straight. - Cameljock, on 08/07/2008, -14/+39What they need is to reboot the story and create new a game titled: Sonic the Hedgehog: IN SPAAACE!
The plot would include genetically enhanced, cybernetic super-soldier-hedgehogs in bulky exoskeleton armor with helmets that have narrow line-of-sight, the ability to cloak, take direct hits from tactical nuclear bombs launched from orbit; running on some futuristic version of CryEngine and cross-platform-able to such an extreme, that you could play it on a gameboy color with no loss in texture quality or frames-per-second. If I have missed a feature, post below. - appleseed1234, on 08/08/2008, -1/+25There hasn't been a game that's pumped people up at all since Sonic and Knuckles on the Genesis. The day Sonic died was the day he opened his mouth.
"We can't just stand still with Sonic; we've got to be looking at different ways to develop the character, different genres, and so on."
Which is exactly why there will never be another truly great Sonic game.... - Kyrgizion, on 08/08/2008, -1/+24Nintendo did a great job keeping the Mario franchise alive and healthy throughout decades of changing technology and gaming standards. They handled the transition to 3D and the crossover to other platforms almost perfectly, staying true to the roots of the franchise and improving upon previously established innovations.
Sonic on the other hand has been used as a bit of a cash cow, and not even an overly succesful one at that. Which is sad, really, since I used to root from him when I had a Sega as a kid (nowadays most kids have two or more consoles, in those days that was pretty much a rarity). I hope Sega/Nintendo salvage what they can and restore Sonic to his former glory, before all the spinoffs and ripoffs. - wexmajor, on 08/08/2008, -0/+21"We can't just stand still with Sonic; we've got to be looking at different ways to develop the character, different genres, and so on."
They STILL don't get it! Quality != Innovation god dammit. Fix the ***** camera angles, fix the ***** gameplay, get the basics down and THEN you can innovate. How ***** dense are these people? - agentb111, on 08/07/2008, -9/+27lately?!?!
- SSUK, on 08/08/2008, -4/+21It took them HOW many years to acknowledge this? You shat all over my childhood hero, Sega. I hope you post another 10 billion yen loss next quarter as well.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+17Its the speed issue, you cant run around fast in a detailed 3d enviroment without either "running on rails" approach or crashing into ***** all the time. Sonic was best in 2d for the pure speed, it was a very nice take on the "platform" platform.
- marjo9, on 08/08/2008, -1/+17they said that about metroid.
- jamesdew, on 08/08/2008, -0/+16They said that about lemmings,
oh wait ye... - KingGorilla, on 08/08/2008, -0/+15They said about checkers
- appleseed1234, on 08/08/2008, -3/+17People said the same would be true for Mario when things were first going 3D, so it must be true.
Either that or Sega firing all the geniuses behind the original games. - KMartSheriff, on 08/08/2008, -1/+14Why are you getting dugg down again? The last good Sonic game was on the Genesis. Sonic Adventure wasn't bad actually, but you get my point.
- Kwipper, on 08/08/2008, -0/+12Sega. Here is what you need to do to revive Sonic.
1.) 2D Side-Scrolling Gameplay rendered in 2D or 3D enviroments. (Yes you can still innovate even though the gameplay is 2D
2.) Remember when you were a child and you had fun on a waterslide. That was fun, wasn't it right. Being able to go through all of those twists and turns. That is something that the Sonic the Hedgehog series had. Rolling into a ball and rolling down a large hill, to only flung into the air via a spring or a ramp. There needs to be more segments like that. Sonic 1, 2, 3 and SnK had that too.
3.) NO MORE ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS. Sonic, Tails, and mabye Knuckles are the only characters you need. Drop that emo-filled whining Shadow, drop the ***** chao, and that cream character, and for god sakes no more Amy.
4.) Keep the plot simple. Dr. Robotnik wants to take over the world, Sonic is the only one who can stop him. Keep it simple. It doesn't need to be more elaborate than this.
5.) Play as Sonic, Tails and maybe Knuckles. I do not want to see a repeat of Sonic Heroes or Sonic Adventure 2 where we were forced to play those characters to beat the game.
6.) Either hire a god damn voice actor who can actually voice Sonic without coming off as being annoying, or give us the option to listen to it in foreign language with subtitles.
7.) Lay off on the gimmicks. I am looking at your current game with Sonic turning into a Werehog, and it seems to scream GIMMICK to me. This is not good. This is kinda what you guys did in Sonic Adventure 2 where you forced us to play the different characters when all we wanted was just to play as Sonic. Oh BTW I hated the Knuckles/Rogue levels. I hated them so much. It was a real buzzkill after playing the fun, fast-paced Sonic levels.
8.) Debug Test your game before releasing it to the public. I remember when you guys went 3D and for some reason you were never able to fix your damn camera... at all. Sonic Adventure had a ***** camera, Sonic Adventure 2 had a ***** camera, Sonic Heroes had he worst camera problems I have ever seen in 3D game and you guys actually managed to do worse than that with the Sonic the Hedgehog game you released for the 360.
Do you people have game testers? If so, do you actually listen to them? Cause I am sure that if I was beta testing this game, this issue would be on my number one problem list. Yet you people still continue have the same problems over and over. Fix the problems, or don't release the game to the public. I am willing to wait nearly forever for a well developed Sonic game than a ***** one with bugs that is released every year. Other gamers are willing to do the same thing.
I can't think of anything else ATM.
I hope Sega comes across this post and reads it, cause I will be quite honest. If Sega fails to fix Sonic after Sonic Unleashed I will at that point completely give up on Sonic as a mascot character. I am sure others will as well and then Sega should do so as well, cause they will have officially proven to the world that they cannot revive their own god damn mascot.
If that does happen, then they should give Sonic to a 3rd party developer or maybe Nintendo so that they could show Sega how to fix Sonic the Hedgehog. If they manage to do what Sega cannot, then Sega should either take pointers, or just leave the video game business all together cause at that point it would be a useless video game company :(

- Poseur117, on 08/08/2008, -0/+11Sonic deserves to be up there with LoZ, Mario, Metriod, and all the other greats.
It's a shame the franchise hasn't done as well recently as it could.
Sonic Chronicles or whatever the RPG is looks cool to me though. - ZenMojo, on 08/08/2008, -1/+12Knuckles was great. Sonic unleashed? Screw that, if you need a fuzzy guy punching people in the face, don't rape Sonic, just use Knuckles.
Matter of fact, here's your new rule of thumb Sega: 100 mph or more? Sonic. Vertical? Tails. Anything else? Knuckles.
Now go back and learn level design. - fandyboy, on 08/08/2008, -0/+11Yeah, if it aint broke don't ***** fix it.
- Chainheart, on 08/08/2008, -1/+12I enjoyed Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube, but that was mostly because of the whole Chao deal.. and I was a lot younger.
- Protoss, on 08/08/2008, -1/+11Shadow is the only good thing that came from the 3-D era of Sonic games, and that's just because it gives Sonic some actual competition, not just mindless "Hey...here's a Bat character!".
And where the hell did "Eggman" come from anyways? Did I miss a name change somewhere or did they just decide to call Robotnik 'Eggman' to sound cool? - jamesdew, on 08/08/2008, -3/+13what's that like $10
- Shaflugi, on 08/08/2008, -0/+10"And where the hell did "Eggman" come from anyways? Did I miss a name change somewhere or did they just decide to call Robotnik 'Eggman' to sound cool?"
Eggman was always his name in Japan. In Sonic Adventure, they kinda just used it as a rude nickname, but since then, they've pretty much fully adopted it as his real name. - RavagesOfTime, on 08/08/2008, -0/+9"We can't just stand still with Sonic; we've got to be looking at different ways to develop the character, different genres, and so on."
Clearly, they're still not paying attention. - lulder, on 08/08/2008, -0/+9I wouldn't mind a HD Version of Sonic 1 Personally. Now that was a good game.
- UNEXPLODEDduck, on 08/08/2008, -0/+9Yeah, they managed to shoot themselves in the foot in the penultimate sentence. It was going well 'till then.
- christof53, on 08/08/2008, -1/+9They said that about Mega Man
- Protoss, on 08/08/2008, -0/+7Ugh...Sonic in the time of King Arthur? I liked the Genesis games where there was a vague storyline having something to do with Dr. Robotnik and the Chaos Emeralds.
- PrometheusBorn, on 08/08/2008, -1/+8Why dugg down? Are people oblivious to sarcasm?
I found this humorous. - roflbrothel, on 08/08/2008, -1/+7I think we're forgetting the obligatory sexy chick with realistic bouncing breasts and advanced nipple simulations.
Also, can the hedgehog exosuits fly? - scubachef11, on 08/08/2008, -1/+6That was a great game, save for the glitches.
- flxfxp, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5I'd say to make the whole game cell-shaded. I think Green Hill would look awesome in it. If it was up to me, I would take all the level characteristics from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and remake them in a new semi sidescrolling/3d game
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -1/+6I dont know, I had/ have the sonic & knuckles cart with the cart slot on top. It allowed you to play sonic 2 & 3 through as knuckles, was pretty fun and different way to work through the old games. Now tails/ miles, I couldnt give a ***** about.
- EmperorAwesome, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5They're so dense they have a gravitational field...of suck.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5A bit?!?!
- Stryke, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5"Oh well, at least the Werehog gameplay looks pretty fun."
No it doesn't. - littlelives, on 08/08/2008, -0/+5If Sega does what Capcom did with Megaman 9, I'd say Sega would be on the right track.
- lvlln, on 08/08/2008, -1/+5Sonic Heroes was decent?
- EmperorAwesome, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4I'm imagining a Tomba-like level design.
- felyduw, on 08/08/2008, -0/+410 years ago it was $10, now it's $10 Million.
- zoomtechtv, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4Sonic Works best in 2D!
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4willy, how pathetic is it that you comment on stories which you dont care about ?
So pathetic I had to comment - ZenMojo, on 08/08/2008, -0/+4So, basically, the first third of Sonic Adventure.
