- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Only in Seattle has one of my TAs discussed Final Fantasy in class, if only briefly. Maybe it's not that there are *more* gamers here, just that - given all the tech companies - it's not as taboo and "uncool" as in other places.
PS: After living here for 5 months let me just say the weather isn't *that* bad. Seriously, I think there's some conspiracy to keep more Southern Californians from moving here...not that that's a bad thing ;) - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Shhh....We don't acutally want people in other parts of the country to know this. We want them to keep moving to Arizona.
- wolfzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Um...2 out of 3 Californians in Seattle agree: The women here are hotter than in LA. Also, LA should be on that list for the sheer NUMBER of gamers there. It's like eleventy billion people and half of them try to buy "the new Grand Theft Auto for Playstation 3" everytime they're in an electronics store, or any store for that matter. "Excuse me? Does PetSmart carry Playstation 3? My dog wants one."
Also, Seattle does indeed rock. The rain factor is seriously blown out of proportion. It's mostly beautiful and slightly cold, with a little bit of light rain every now and then and the nightife here is totally unique. Unfortunately I'm going to have to move back to Hollywood in order to execute my master plan of taking over the film industry with awesomeness. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's true actually. Just wait until late spring and summer. the best weather (and most beautiful area) in the country.
it's a pretty well-kept secret that seattlites intentionally discourage others from moving here because if the world knew the truth, we would be swamped with people. - robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Aside from this statistic, I keep on hearing tons of great things about Seattle, I need to visit.
- thehans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That and being stuck in traffic really cuts into your game time.
- Machine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Once and for all...
Here's a list of the top 10 most rainy cities in the US:
Avg annual precipitation in inches
1. Hilo, Hawaii 128.00
2. Quillayute, Wash 104.50
3. Astoria, Oregon 69.60
4. Blue Canyon, Ca 67.87
5. Mobile, Alabama 64.64
6. Tallahassee, Florida 64.59
7. Pensacola, Florida 61.16
8. New Orleans, La 59.74
9. W Palm Beach, Fla 59.72
10. Miami, Florida 59.55
Notice... no Seattle.
However... Seattle is (on average) the 4th CLOUDIEST city in the US... with 227 cloudy days per year. Having lived here for 5+ years, I would have to say that most of them are partly cloudy and very pleasant.
It's not perfect... we have a homeless problem and our public transportation could stand some improvement... but it's a great place for geeks to live in! - lilfroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/E-News/20023/March_20022/Suicide_in_the_United____States.htm
"Suicide rates are typically presented as the number of deaths per 100,000 persons... The western states have the highest rates, with Nevada leading the nation at 23.93/100,000. The lowest rate is for the District of Columbia at 6.05/100,000, followed by New Jersey at 6.75/100,000. " - edgecurve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I live in Seattle (Ballard). And it's gets the "rainy" reputation not from the amount of rain it gets but from how often. Usually when it rains, it's a dreary, drippy, mist-like rain that can last for weeks on end. During the winter, it seems as if everyday is dark and damp; it's depressing. Video games are a good escape from the chilly, bleak, wet hell that is Seattle.
- Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well, the Nintendo of America, Microsoft, and the Penny-Arcade offices are all located there...and thats a lot of gamers=)
- PostedOval, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Let's see: Microsoft is here...Valve.... Sierra/Vivendi....Nintendo.... and dozens of smaller developers. Sounds about right. :P
- RFtesla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've lived in the Seattle area my whole life and can testify the awesomeness that is the Pacific Northwest. I do my fair share of gaming but I love going up to the Goldbar or wherever and just hike.
- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -5/+91) It's always raining.
2) The girls are all chunkers
Enough said ;-) - xVern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Diggnation should come up here, it'd be pretty fun.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I keep expecting someone from Eastern Washington to defend that part of the state. The problem is that the cow age the string backbone of Eastern Washington's Internet.
- TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I live in Seattle, and I must say that last week was the first time I have seen rain in quite a while.
In any case, it really seems like our gamer population is more dense here than any other place I have been. What is surprising is that I don't know of any internet cafes/arcades that have stayed in business. There is Gameworks, and one last Lanwerx location, but that's all I know of. It seems we all play at home. - afred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The hikes around here are to die for! Great waterfalls too. The Pacific Northwest is a great place to live.
- lilfroger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are a few good ones in Tacoma and south; near the college's. That is if you can stand being around college kids.
- edgecurve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4We let Canada play in the World Series every once in a while. So there.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah your right, seattle has been rated #1 most Fit City of America.
Ironic..
http://www.mensfitness.com/rankings/304
(Houston, Texas is rated #1 Most Fattest) - PezFr33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know where you're hanging out in Seattle, but there are plently of hot girls out here. You should explore further from the couch.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm pretty sure Ray Allen could take you, jabbar. =)
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"If the weather is so nice then why are you guys spending so much time playing video games?"
Well, for one, I am doing laundry right now. I can't go anywhere till that's done. haha Might as well go play Halo! - Unicyclelarry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh right, cold winters. Not something I normally think about living in LA (sorry, I had to). Seriously though, OK, that makes sense, and also explains why Phoenix is number 5: Do you really want to go outside during the summer when it's 110 in the shade?
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I guess L.A. didn't make the list because there are too many distractions...beaches, hot women, sunshine, snowboarding, hot women, tons of culture, pro sports, and hot women
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Not only are we the largest gaming city, we're the most literate.
But don't come here! - SoccerBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3[Ahem. There are always exceptions to surveys like this. I live in Seattle, there are no Windows systems on the premises, and the only gaming console is an original Atari 2600. So…um, yeah.]
Gotta love that part. - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Most literate, healthiest, and most gaming. Sounds alright.
- MrCrushington, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Have you ever been to Seattle? We've got punk, alternative, hiphop, and electronica scenes all thriving and becoming more and more diverse and interesting by the day. For the last couple months the weather has been more than beautiful, while maintaining a moderate temperature. Most of us don't drink Starbucks' crap, instead opting for the writhing masses of smaller coffee shops. All your points are thus negated, and may god have mercy on your soul.
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, there are bremalos here, but they come in with the navy.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it doesn't. nice try making comments about a place you don't live in.
it rains in the winter. that's about 1 quarter of the year. the rest of the year is incredible. - Mdefoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Better add anothe Seattle freak to the list. Suprised there is so many on here...
I didn't realize we had so much gaming here. I knew Microsoft, Bungie, Nintendo in North Bend...but I didn't know about the others.
Besides the occasional rain (which I love...to run/mountain bike in), everyone forgot to mention that I believe 4 of the top 10 companies Forbes said is the best to work for, are Washington companies: REI, Starbucks, Costco, Microsoft. Go to Starbucks to get a latte, stop at Costco and get a GREAT FREAKIN' DEAL ON A LAPTOP, hit up REI on the way home to climb a wall or test out a mountain bike, then go gaming when you get home.... - ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I've lived here all my life and love it. We're not the biggest fans of outsiders. So you all stop saying how great it is to live here. haha
Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, is the best kept secret of the United States. - Zopmaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey people I have a question: If the 1962 World's fair didn't happen here (Built space needle, keyarena and US palivilon for that) (I live in Seattle), would all these tech companies still be here? And I think Diggnation should totaly come up here!
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't say for sure, but I would have to guess something about colder winters (a lot of the top ten is in the north). Also their really isn't anything to do in Detroit, so instead of doing things, we play games. Also I think what they might have did was list a major city you live in so maybe people put Detroit.
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can't really argue about eastern WA, I can vouch that there are indeed plenty fatties in spokane, though if you hang out near Gonzaga U you'll find a decent amount of hotties. I'm originally from the seattle area but now live in coeur d' alene, ID which is pretty much on the WA / ID border. Lots of fatties and freaks here, yesiree
- medieval, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dude, our baseball teams and video gaming cities are all the best in the world because that is just the truth. Speaking of baseball, there's no way in hell a pro japanese baseball team could sniff the world series competing against major league teams comprising THE BEST and most highly compensated players from latin america, canada, usa, australia, JAPAN, etc. We're not talking about the stupid WBC that nobody watched. Japanese pro teams have "foreigner quotas." That's bogus and can't possibly be the best of the best when you have to set artificial quotas on how many foreigners you can have on a team. The quota is simply an admission that the average Japanese player is less skilled than the average foreign player because foreign players would be more prevalent in the Japanese league absent a quota. Why do you think that quite possibly the best Japanese player ever, Ichiro, plays in MLB and not in Japan anymore? Because this is the best league in the world is in America (plus one team in Canada), so deal with it. And that's the bottom line, 'cause stone cold said so...
- drsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Since when is "crapply" a word?
- basementoffice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't forget the SMOG!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You have obviously never been to Seattle you retard. What kind of stupid comment was that anyway? Way to make yourself look stupid... it's working.
- weebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, we rule. *boots up modded xbox*
- milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, I'm not making any racist connection here. White people kill themselves more and DC is very non-white. Let the racial tension slip away and you'll understand the paragraphs aren't related.
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About the only bit of knowledge I retained from my hydrology class at UW is that we don't really get that much rain in terms of inches of rainfall. We're actually slightly below the national average.
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3microsoft, nintendo, bungie, valve, sucker punch, arena.net, monolith, zipper... the list goes on.
i talked to one of the guys at ebgames and they said Seattle sells the most Final Fantasy games in the USA. doesn't hurt to have a huge Asian population either. and who can forget the Penny Arcade Expo http://www.pennyarcadeexpo.com
lived here for over 3 years, love it. best, city, ever. - rise888, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I moved to Seattle from the Bay area and I wholeheartedly agree. Ever since moving, I've played less videogames because I'm outdoors more often. There's so much to do here! Great snowboarding/skiing, great nature trails, mountain biking, the list goes on.
Statistically NYC and other large cities get more inches of rain too! - YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't forget Valve!
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm pretty sure that Seattle has some of the lowest rates of obesity as well, seems somewhat odd doesnt it?
- milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In DC the suicide rates are being cannibalized by the homocide rates. Or maybe it's the lack of voting that keep us from ending it all. :P
Actually the real reason is (from that same link), "Another way of putting this is that 73 percent of all suicides are committed by white men." DC is the chocolate city with the marshmellow center (Colbert white house dinner speech). - TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know at least one GOOD local band in all major genres in the Seattle area.
Also, I haven't scanned the page at all, but you do realize that we have a lot of major game development here, not just Microsoft and Nintendo. Also, we have several schools that have specialized cirriculum for the industry. Indeed if you can stand hippies and people that protest EVERYTHING, then you can enjoy Seattle.
Might I suggest that you live in a neighboring city though. - rhettnyedotorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2while we're making canada jokes, i was going to say that video gaming is escapism and this was seattles way of dealing with their canada-envy.
