- atomicpoet, on 10/11/2007, -5/+47Something I don't understand about Sony: if the PSP and PS3 are not simple "gaming devices" why are they called "PlayStation"? I mean, they could market this under a different name to highlight its multimedia capabilities. As it stands now, everyone assumes the PlayStation brand is about gaming. Maybe people would be more wont to spend $600 for a media center than a "video game console".
Am I the only person thinking this way? - truspector, on 10/11/2007, -9/+45The PSP also sells respectable numbers, nowhere close to the DS, but respectable. I've oftened wondered what everyone is doing with them, as the software is stale and doesn't seem to be selling well.
- mchammer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+38I don't get why people call PSP a failure i mean it has outsold the original xbox and the Gamecube.
- wisedude, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34I'll tell you what everyone is doing with them, HOMEBREW. I can run ***** n64 games on my psp. isn't that alone worth the price tag?
- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Yeah, homebrew. Mostly emulators. It's a NES, a SNES and a Mega Drive all in one with a nice wide screen.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26Homebrew and a portable music and video player. ...thats about it.
- caddyalan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15In 2005, it seemed there would be nothing but gimmicky DS games. But just as the system seemed D00M3D, it suddenly had several good, games. However, I can't ignore the fact that the DS has tons of lousy licensed games and stuff that serious gamers won't like.
- djruden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Homebrew is right. The only reason I purchased one was to put Dark Alexs
firmware on it and never have to purchase a single game or UMD movie.
There's really no must buy games anyway. I just put Final Fantasy 1 on it, and its no different that the version I played on NES, GBA, Playstation, or wonderswan... Alright, I never played the wonderswan version, but I'm pretty sure its the same thing. - truspector, on 10/11/2007, -6/+19"Gimmicks, hype, cost."
A week ago I would have agreed with you, but I bought a DS last week. I've been playing the new super mario, metriod prime hunters, brain aga and tons of old GBA games I never played as I didn't have a GBA. I am having a blast. The DS has games for everybody regardless of age or gamer type. It also has some really sweet features including the wifi connect, ability to close the screen and reopen to pick up right where you left off, long battery life, and my personal favorite for a handheld, NO LOAD TIMES. Sony screwed up when they tried to make their handheld superuberpowerful. Handhelds are for the casual gamer and need to be geared as such. To top it off you were right about price, $129 isn't very hard to swallow and the games are cheap as well.
"And PSPs multimedia capabilities don't make it less of a game system, it actually makes it more of one since those features can be used to enhance games"
These features make more sense on a home console plain and simple. A portable needs to revolve around ease of use and "play on the go." - RamboJesus, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23LOL. Yes you have to play Nintendo games in order to make it worth it.
- sirgad, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14@Rulsky - In a nut shell: NDS is for children and PSP is for grown ups.
Well that's a pretty broad statement. And completely false. - mashuppodcast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11GOD, I thought you meant Internet Explorer the first time I read that!
- fragged23, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14The PSP was never suppose to be "just about the games". i can't even consider the DS and PSP on the same playing field, i just dont think its fair. the DS applies to a much larger audience. i have a DS, and its ok, but the only game i ever play in Tiger Woods. My PSP on the other hand. well that is another story. if you take time to learn its features, especially if you have a PS3 (for remote play, which is very cool) the PSP is a very mature multimedia device.
- barnis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I love my PSP I only wish that there was a SKYPE or JAHAH port
- tapo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11The PSP is actually really good if you're into podcasts. It can automatically turn itself on and grab the latest episodes of vidcasts/podcasts at night, or 'stream' podcasts when you're in range of a wireless hotspot.
I think that feature and Lumines are the reasons I keep it around. - dpcdomino, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I still think the PSP would be light years ahead in acceptance if they never introduced the UMD and made the games on a memory stick or cartridge. Sony's tenacity at creating the next media format is going to kill them.
- TMelcher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I'm probably going to be dugg down for this, but here it goes: I own a PSP and a DS, and I prefer the PSP. The added media features don't detract from its prowess as a gaming console. Windows is the most popular gaming platform, and it certainly runs more than just games!
Anyway, I think the big kickers for most people are the game library and the price. The PSP is more expensive, and doesn't have a wide enough game selection, due Nintendo's long-standing existence in the handheld market that leaves Sony in sort of the same boat as Microsoft was with the original Xbox. - Zuggy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Having played both the PSP and the DS I have to agree with the article. The PSP tries to be a portable entertainment system while the DS is a portable gaming system and when I want to play a fun game I find myself reaching for the DS more then the PSP.
- Zero2aHero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8To combat all of that third party functionality of the ds?
- blim8183, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I recently got a PSP and use it all the time for listening to music and watching videos while on the subway in the mornings. In the NYC subways I see people with PSPs all the time, it's much less common to see a DS.
- Renton, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12I dont know what people are considering "next-gen" these days, but the PSP came out years ago. You can get a real PDA for that price, that comes with much more power, accessibility, and an almost unlimited amount of homebrew apps known as "programs"
- prockcore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The gamegear sold 10 million units. That's pretty damn good for the early 90s. The PSP has only sold twice that. the DS has sold 4 times that.
- brandonhines, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I see where he is trying to go, but that kid needs to go back to journalism class. Talk about half-assed writing.
- Itazura, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15So they are wanting to add more features, cry more. There are plenty of games still comming out, Monster Hunter 2 will rock faces off.
- ptsd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8sonys biggest rival is not nintendo, it is apple. remember the sony walkman? guess what killed it. the ipod. sony needed something to take that market back, its always been their intention to use the psp to do that. the sony psp was created to be a portable media center where you could download movies and music, surf the internet, play games, ect. with the iphone it is the same, sony still needs to be able to compete with it.
the nintendo DS was not created solely to play games either. it was created to be a hybrid pda, with wireless capabilities that allowed you to communicate with friends, browse the internet, and play games.
none of this is what any of you want to hear. but its the truth so you might as well digg it down. - greatkingrat85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Can anyone tell me if MGS Portable Ops is good on the PSP?
- knite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7You know that you have a choice, right? No one is forcing you to buy electronics with high tech. You want a phone that just makes calls? They have them, and they are practically free. You don't want that fancy mp3 crap? They have cd players that just play music.
I swear, I thought Digg was suppose to be a technology site, not an anti-tech site. - freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10"Play" because you can play music and movies on them. Play doesn't just refer to games.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7there is no such comparison because the psp has done better than every other handheld console that is not made by nintendo in less time. Game gear, wonderswan, lynx , nomad, neo geo pocket, so on and so forth. SO failure is not a correct term when comparing it to freakish success that the DS is having.
- piccols8, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Well, there was that one European ad that said something along the lines of "Buy the new Sony Blu-Ray player" ands then in small font at the bottom it read "It also plays games".
I don't know if that's what you were talking about though. - NinjaPig, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9dear god, it is so simple
leave the functionalities and exploring the potential to the hackers and just focus on the games - xerus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I like how you can say the DS has gimmicks like its a bad thing, but the gimmicks of the PSP like playing music and video are somehow good, and enhance games.
- jasepower, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7This is why Sony is selling behind MS and Nintendo (PSP and PS3), because they're too busy telling 'customers' what they want instead of finding out what they want and delivering that to them. Sony is too big to fall as a company as a whole, but their games division is doomed with this kind of thinking and direction.
- joerod, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Sony needs some partners to give its device more flare, IE youtube, and or some sort of online music service.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The DS has absolutely insane success, it is expected that soon over 80% of people in Japan will have one, and the DS is the only thing the PSP can compare to. Any handheld will look like a failure compared to the DS
- azzageddi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I haven't homebrewed, but 99% of the time I'm just watching dl'ed videos off the Memory Stick. I do have a couple of games that I play once in a while. Being able to whip out my PSP and show some family photos comes in handy sometimes, too.
- sephiroth965, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Yeah, it worked great for the N-gage!
- TMelcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I actually really do care that consoles can play DVDs. I've never purchased a real, bona fide DVD player, because I purchased a PS2 right off the bat, and, once I got my Xbox 360, I switched to that, since I was using better component cabling.
I haven't bought an Apple TV, similarly, because I just use Connect 360 to stream my media over to my TV. That's incredibly useful to me.
Web browsing would really help me out with the 360, because I live in the dorms at my college 8 months of the year, and I have to drop my console off with the IT people to have them register it with the system, because their network requires browser-based authentication. Admittedly, I'm probably the minority there, but it is an inconvenience that exists because Emory's IT department assumes everything that can use the internet has a browser.
And I say this owning both a Wii and a DS too. I do really appreciate the extra features, and I don't see how they detract from the ability to play games at all. - Cyberbladewolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5As crazy as the next giant enemy crab.
- roxya, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Thing about UMDs is that they're quite large but also cheap. Mem sticks are just too expensive, carts are generally too small.
- masterthiefster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think he means it's trivially easy for Sony to acquire the technology, not that said phone would be a trivial feature.
- oldtimegamer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I totally agree. The new iphone emulator is the awesome!
- deftech, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5if you owned on you would understand that the psp rocks.
- Wrathfire, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10My brother and I are adult gamers and are buying our PSPs this week. PSP offers more tech for our money and if Sony want to expand it's capabilities beyond gaming then more power to them.
- EricPeters, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Without homebrew, the PSP would be complete crap. I hadn't touched mine for months, then I busted it out to upgrade to the 3.4 custom firmware and run all the homebrew, and now I'm actually starting to use it.
- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3mario, link, samus, pokemon, an existing monopoly and catering to a wider variety of gamers sells 42 million units. nintendo obviously has a much better business plan for the ds. they saw their target and executed.
nintendo gambled hard, and won big; they deserve their accolades, but the psp is still not a failure by any means. the truth is, sony ate up ~30% of the handheld market and the only real true trouncing is from japanese sales. from nothing to 25 million is respectable and is much better than any other handheld has been able to do against the mighty nintendo ever. - AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Right on Croaton. I mainly use my PS3 as a media center. With Nero Home I can stream all my music, pics and videos straight to the PS3. The PS3 is going to be an all around entertainment machine.
- Bootes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So go ahead and play games. Extra features don't prevent you from using it for it's main feature.
- slapout, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Well Sony, you know most PDAs have freely available tools that allow people to write programs that they can then run on their PDAs. So if that's the way you wanta go...
- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3the psp is a great device. unfortunately, it got stuck with a pretty bad stigma early on and has yet to shake the naysayers.
some of its games are great and actually beat out console titles, but the number of titles that are bad or just mediocre give the psp a bad reputation. the ds is the same, but people tend to overlook the bad titles. on paper, they both have the same number of solid titles believe it or not. its just that many designers dont necessarily play to the psps strengths, so i think alot of the negative press comes from the fact that a bad ds game is usually just mediocre or blah, but a bad psp game can be downright horrible. -
