- Joe Siegler, 1999
I still love that quote. - EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+71Game or it didn't happen.
- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63I hope it never gets released. It is perfect as it is. An actual product would only ruin it.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61Lets add some more classic quotes...
"If DNF is not out in 2001, something's very wrong." - George Broussard
"We're confident that DNF will be one of the greatest, if not the greatest game of 1998. And this confidence is not misplaced." - Scott Miller
By the way, show us a ***** screen shot already it wont kill you. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46Heres the 2001 E3 trailer: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6429304191141948624
Now compare this to what came out in 2001, Max Payne by far was the best FPS out there and this definitely looked like it could kick its ass with attitude like Duke Nukem 3d did to Quake. - VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -4/+49that's what she said
- reevolutn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52A for effort
- giveer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Yo Scottie!, stop giving the interview and get back to f*ckin' work!! Chop Chop!
- hansblix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37So you're tellin me there's a chance...
- wildthing202200, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Release date for the game, December 22, 2012.
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32At least they named it realistically.
- spidermanspants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2610 years in the making
screwed up?
nahhhhh - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23if you bury it, you're adding at least 3 weeks per bury to the release date, so please bury carefully.
- demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20IMO They should release all the work in progress with the various DNF engines since they started work on it, for the fans who have waited for so long, once DNF does ship. Remember lameduke and Duke Nukem 3d? Something like that, but with all the engines used in development.
- onidraky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Man, reading that made me want to track down Rise of the Triad and Shadow Warrior. Both those games ruled.
- biggrz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18@timdigg
that would make a TPS (Third Person Shooter) - chaos7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16look at the old trailer. if the game is anything like that, it could quite possibly live up to the hype.
- curunir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I read this in the interview:
"A new threat to our industry is resells, something that was not a factor only three years ago. Gamestop is the biggest offender, and makes over a billion dollars a year on resells now – with none of that going to the publishers or studios that created these games. This is a serious blow for content creators, and will only make it harder and harder for original IP to be given any sort of a chance in the future."
This statement reveals Scott Miller to be asshat and a moron. Gamestop and other resellers expand the market, they don't present a "threat". This is just like the movie industry that got all up in arms when people started renting video tapes - they were sure it would destroy their industry because people were supposed to *buy* those tapes. Of course, video rentals now produce the largest portion of sales for DVDs and videos.
The "reseller" market for games will do the same thing for the gaming industry. People that cannot afford new games can buy used ones, and other people will buy *more* games because they can trade them in.
And this guy is all whining and bitching about his "intellectual property" and is all "waaahh they're making money on my 10 years old games". Look, buddy, *produce* something for a change - and maybe you could make some money, too. - saboola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14My pre-order for DNF was written in Sanskrit on ancient papyrus.
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I can finally use that computer I bought 10 years ago to play it!!!
- TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13yeah all the source for previous versions should come with the gold edition or something
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Check out the 1998 E3 trailer. Lens Flare FTW!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6607510621229530870 - Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Reselling used software is not piracy. It is fair use. And yes, this has been tested in court, repeatedly and around the globe, thanks to Nintendos insistence that it was illegal to resell Nintendo cartridges.
- Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Hopefully my K6-2 will breeze through it
- chaos7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10even though it's old, that trailer KICKS ASS!!!
this one.. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6429304191141948624 - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I love how the interviewer puts out the idea that perhaps developers are scared off by the project. Why would they be? They have nothing to lose.
If they add garbage to the game, it doesn't matter because chances are that it will never see the light of day and they get their full paycheck. If it does see the light of day and actually sucks, they can say they were one of the ones that at least worked on the released game. If they make it great, they can say they helped make Duke Nukem Forever amazing when it finally went through the door.
Certainly sounds like a good spot to be in to me. You know, if you don't mind the thought that you spend every day working on something that will eventually be completely wiped out with a single key - delete. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Diablo 3
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8What a coincidence - that's what they're using to code it too!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i, for one, still have hope for the game & am still anticipating it.
i was excited in 1997 & am still excited 10 years later..
:D - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The thing with Duke Nukem Forever is that no matter how much longer it takes to develop, you know that 3DR knows people won't be able to resist buying it, if for no reason other then just to be able to say that they finally got it.
- larsoncc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The games wouldn't be the same price. New games are $60, used games are NOT $60.
One other thing: Maybe if publishers and system makers concentrated on making entertainment that wasn't so DISPOSABLE, this wouldn't be a problem for them.
Further, I don't understand what makes game publishers, or ANYONE for that matter, feel like they have the right to interfere with MY free market trade of the goods and services that I purchased! The gall! And in the end, despite what you posted, that's what this is all about.
-The "low margins" come from the cash cow that is used games.
INCORRECT. The low margins existed BEFORE GameStop decided to sell used - the used market emerged because of the fact that publishers are only allowing retailers to make a tiny margin on a title. You have to make money some way.
I don't even know why publishers think that used games are even allowed to be an issue at this point - the used game market has been mature for a decade, and all this time, it's had NO negative effect on game sales. - Kevinok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This game better be great when it comes out. That is if it ever comes out.
- larsoncc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9SgtBaker - "To bluntly put it, it's as if Gamestop is aiding a form of IP piracy by not giving a cut to the publishers and studios."
Except that it totally and completely ISN'T doing that... at ALL. It's a used market, like cars, movies, cds, and virtually EVERY other material and virtual good available ANYWHERE, EVER. Hell, there's even a used market for magazines and books - and it doesn't get more "IP" than that.
We're not talking about piracy (admittedly bad), we're talking about your choice to use/sell/destroy/whatever your fairly purchased single copy of a game.
So, for millenia, we've been able to sell/buy any item used, and here you're saying "Let's willingly destroy all that, because I want the game companies to have more money."
Why, as a consumer, would you even SUGGEST consenting to that? Did GameStop pee in your cornflakes or something?
If anything, GameStop should be demanding higher margins on new game sales so that they don't have to RELY on used game sales to maintain profitability.
And further, game publishers need to wise up and quickly drop the price on new games. There's no reason a game should remain at $60 a year after its release. - OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm not going to bury it, but ctged should be more careful. There is a big difference between screwing up the game and screwing up the development.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6GNR no longer exists. Guns N Roses is around, but not *****.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Quite the optimist, are you?
- Severious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Fallout 3...
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wish I could quit you, DNF!
- opiv421, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14*yawns*
- larsoncc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6SgtBaker - except that the game industry has performed well since the 70s... while allowing used game sales, and preserving flexibility for the customer. Your statements are --ridiculous--. You act as if no other industry has faced sales of used goods!
This isn't new economics... Treat your customers and retailers fairly. Schedule price reductions... How is this ANY different from any other product?
PS - as a customer, ultimately, we are in charge of the game industry. Hose your customers, and you won't have an industry. And that's pretty much what I care about. Being fairly treated as a customer. I feel used game sales, and GameStop/Ebay allow for fair treatment (disposal) of bad games. - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It still looks fun as hell...
definitely duke...
Just let us have it already... i don't care if its not the "best game ever"... it still looks like great fun, and its still the ONLY game that can be the duke sequel... - SLuM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6still waiting for starcraft 2..
still waiting... - larsoncc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The video game crash was caused directly by the publishers of NEW games, not the used market. They glutted the market with cookie cutter, disposable games.
And... the 2005 game downswing was caused by MS introducing the 360 and a glut of bad games (relative to 2003-4). - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they ever actually release DNF I will purchase whatever hardware is necessary to play the game, and that includes a PS3.
- larsoncc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's a fantasy I won't even pretend to entertain. GameStop isn't giving the publishers their money... to be nice, or whatever you think their motivation is!
The only way they're giving up that money is if they're threatened with "no new releases till you do x", and all that might do... is spur them to move completely to used.
If publishers want a chunk of GameStop's used market, they need to do what car makers, music companies, and every other company does...
INVEST in their used market. There's NOTHING stopping these companies from buying GameStop stock (or any other means of investing in the used market). Heck, if they buy enough stock, they'll probably realize what's going on over there in GameStop land... and want to maximize GameStop's profits. Or... they could use shareholder votes to actually DO something, instead of whining about it. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"We tried too hard" = Our goals, ideas, plans etc were too ambitious to be completed in reality.
- Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Tell that to Civ and Rollercoaster Tycoon.
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you took the delay of DNF as a personal insult.
- gizmo12688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Miller makes a good point.........................Where the ***** is Max Payne 3!?!?
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Having been a very, very long 3drealms forum poster (top 5% of posters on their forum last I checked - haven't gone there in a few years), I can tell you that every year they say "We screwed it up, we know this, we are trying to get it done". Hearing "in the last 18 month's we took another look at it" is very disconcerting.
Quite frankly I'm confused how a company can admit that they screwed up, tell the public (or their forum members) that they went back to square 1 and are just trying to get it done, and take another 5 years and still not come close? -
