- opieateit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Just put black tape over the light. My car has lights that come on all the time...a little black tape over them and good as new. :)
- antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"There are FOUR lights!!!"
- joebrodie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I have a 99 year warranty on my 360, and I will NEVER open up my case. I won a Mountain Dew sweepstakes and the 360s came with 99 year warranties. Sometimes I wish I could open it up to get it cooled down (water, polished GPU die, artic silver re-pasting).
I feel like a current Mac owner, except I don't whine (as much). - Juano11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If someone wants a more detailed explaination of what jonnyeh is describing...
http://www.weibull.com/hotwire/issue21/hottopics21.htm - Circuit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Strange.. For "a console that clearly has a huge hardware defect problem" mine has been fine for 6months. If you get a bad 360 then microsoft will replace it without a problem, your just unlucky if you get another. There's a 3% chance that you will get a defective 360 which is pretty much the same with most electrical products these days.
- Andy.D, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Had an Xbox 360 crash last night, but I was playing XBLA not a game. May have to give this s shot if it happens again, don't have a warranty and 90 days is too short!
- kilodelta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i personally think that the whole red lights of death has been blown out of proportion on the net.
one person has the problem, the 3 people that also do (or did) complain in the same post. then the anti-microsoft kids get into it, then the sony kids get into it. before you know it, there are 50 posts going back and forth about how it sucks and how microsoft is a giant monolithic beast of a company that doesn't care about anything except money and blah blah blah. and then someone mentions backwards compatability and the posts all go to hell with "PDO! CS! ESPN NFL2k5!!!!!"
welcome to the echo chamber of the internet. - tatical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was reading all horror stories on the net, then I get home with my 360 (2 days before Christmas), and get some f-ing red lights! So I pulled out the troubleshooting guide: my red light pattern meant that the video plug wasn't set right.
MS did a good thing buy adding those red-light codes, it's like a PC's beeping error codes. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why bother with the extended warranty? It's a game of statistics, if a device is going to break, it is statistically most likely to break soon after you bought it, due to manufacturing error (i.e. the first year, which is covered by the manufacturer's warranty), or very late in its life, due to 'wear and tear' (i.e. past the time that the extended warranty covers). I wish I had sources for these stats, but it seems logical right?
The extended warranty covers the time of a product's life where it is least likely to break down. That's why the stores are so big on selling the extended warranty, because it is unlikely that it will ever be needed.
My 360 broke 4 months after I bought it, I got a new one from Microsoft within a few days, and it's been working great. There's 'little' need for an extended warranty! - SvMidtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My 360 did the "red lights" 2 weeks after I got it, I called 1-800-4My-Xbox and they told me it was the "cables going from my xbox to my TV" so I checked, unplugged then plugged them back and my 360 has worked ever since
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If only we could fix all our problems by putting a little black tape over lights...
- Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4*knocks on wood*
Got one of the first batches of 360's and no issues, power supply never gets hot, no crashes or nothing.
Though the 360 does put off a lot of heat. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I did not know that, Thanks!
- pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've never heard of this one, and I've used mine extensively since I got it back in November. So far it's lasted longer than my first PS2. :)
- reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"I feel like a current Mac owner."
I open up all my macs all the time for upgrading and tweaking. - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really wish Microsoft would provide a way to see how hot the CPU is, at least then I could prepare myself....
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After 6 months of perfect use, my 360 died but was still in warranty (don't ask me how!) so they replaced it with a refurb for free. The refurb is from back in December but there's no rattling noise from inside like my original one...people told me that noise was the part that identifies the orientation of the 360 (vertical or horizontal) but this one doesn't have that noise at all...my guess is it was a loose heatsink?!?
So lesson learned - if you move your 360 and hear a noticeable noise like something is loose - prepare for the 3 Red Lights of doom! - ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jonnyeh:
Uh, the warranty for the xbox 360 is 90 days. How did you get it replaced after 120 days if you did not buy the warranty? - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had my 360 break well past this '90 day warranty' and got it replaced very fast by Microsoft. How long is the warranty really?
- jessecollins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You don't need an extended warranty. At least at this point. My 360 died after the 90 day warranty (from the dreaded flashing red lights) and not once did they mention that it was past the warranty period. M$ knows that there was/is problems with the first batch of 360's so they are going to do anything to keep people happy.
Here is the original story:
http://digg.com/gaming/Story_of_a_Broken_Xbox_360 - chokeslam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they just started making a smaller chipset for the 360 this month so the current temp will go down soon
- agamemnon2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had my 360 since launch and it worked fine up until a few weeks ago. Then I started having the same exact issue explained in the article. Called up MS and then sent a replacement - no questions asked. No warranty needed.
- jasonuher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@joebrody
99 year warranties sure are nice, assuming that if they replace the xbox you get to keep that fancy warranty (usually replacement voids the current warranty and gives you whatever the standard one is) - joebrodie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no typo, I have a 99 year warranty. Good until 2105. Xbox.com guy thought it was his computer screwing up.
- pangderx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm on my third XBOX 360. Every time you send one in, they send you a replacement, which resets the 90 day warranty. I'm still going to buy the extended warranty though.
- Bradmm69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow my warranty just ran out and theyre gonna make me pay 127 to fix it like u other guys. I think anyone who got them before they did anything to fix them should get free repairs. I just dished out $400 i dont have 127 right now
- park1nsr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After a couple of months with no problems with my xbox 360 I started to get the 3 flashing red lights problem, i called Microsoft, and as the guy answered the phone, just before he spoke, i turned it on, and it worked, what a Tw*t I felt.
I explained what had happened and the guy went on to explain it was a PSU issue, how it should be on a 'stand' of its own, and plugged directly into the mains (not on a four-way splitter or anything like that), I went on to explain that this is my set up. The guy continued to go on and was adiment that it was the PSU.
Anyways, after putting down the phone, literally seconds after putting the phone down, my xbox 360 froze. I turned it off by pressing the power button, and pressed the power button again to turn it on, surprise, surprise, I had the 3 red flashing lights again. No then, no matter what I did this time, playing with the PSU, moving in, standing it up, holding it in the air, the damn thing just wouldn't turn on....
So, I picked up the phone and dial-led the free-phone number and couldn't get through to any operator, I held, and held, until about 45 Min's, some chap answers the phone and asks me for my Name, then my home telephone number, I gave those to him. Then he went on to explain that the lines had suddenly become busy and he was just taking messages to pass back to the support team, he added he would get somebody to call me back ASAP (That was 3 days ago).
The next day, after still no phone call, I tried phoning again, I got some guy called 'Wolfgang' who explained that all operators were busy and could I call again later. I explained my situation, at this point rather 'ticked-off' and ranted on about how come nobody has called me back. He explained that all operators were busy and I needed to call again later, I refused to call back, I insisted that he put me back on hold so I could wait for a customer support member of staff. He refused, saying that if he put me on hold, he would only pick the line up again!
I hung up, really niffed, I phoned again, lets face it, its a free phone number, its not costing me anything!!
After about 3 hours of trying, and trying I finally got through to a rather helpful young lady, who talked me through basically what Microsoft have published on their website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907534#appliesto , no surprise, it didn't work!!
The lady went on to explain that there was nothing she could do over the telephone, and suggested that the console be returned to be either repaired, which she was doubtful would happen because of the problem, or a new console would be shipped. She went on to give me a reference number, just in case I needed to call back, as if, I waited long enough just to get back through. She also gave me details of UPS the courier company who would come and collect my XBOX 360 and return it to Microsoft.
I know this isn't a solution, but I have the feeling knowing that I may be getting a version 1.02 xbox 360, hopefully with most of the bugs that were missed due to the 360 being rushed to meet the launch date.
There is hope after all.
Thanks for reading..... - Rubberducky9001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, honestly i think it was something with that new update... i got it and almost immediatly after started having problems, the red lights, i tried all the things that customer support told me to do, didnt help, so they said they would fix it for free, dont even have to pay shipping. Ill probably just get a new one and they wont tell me, cause they told me not to leave custom face plates or anything on it and send just the console not the hard drive, but i dont care. By the way i didnt have a warrenty except for the 90 day one that i got in December, but he said it was an in-warrenty repair, i wasnt gonna correct the guy.
- hanshasuro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Uh, did anyone else's console just die last night? Or is this article's appearance completely coincidental?
I literally started it up, applied a patch from XBL and now the thing is bricked.... WTF - angelscrashdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have never had any problems with my xbox360. It has been run pretty much everyday since January 1. No freezing or crashing to speak of whatsoever.
- madcaow, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0yeah that is kind of the same as this site here http://www.xboxfixes.com they are everywhere!
- StylesC2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I just had my xbox 360 crash today. Did all of the troubleshooting tips on M$ website. Problem still persisted. Gave M$ a call, thinking what the hell they should replace it. Turns out the warranty just ended in May. Good thing I did buy an extra one from GameCrazy. M$ said it would be $129 to get the system fixed.
- MaDKoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok seriously do you work for Microshaft?
I've been in IT now for about 9 years, and it's a known fact that MS loves to experiment on it's customers. Because of this I waited almost a year before getting my 360, and what do you know, it still crapped out.
I never had these issues with my PS2, in fact it's still alive and kicking after a dvd drive replacement 3 years into ownership. Now my 360 well that's another story. I bought it in August and I've played all of 60 hours on it, yeah I know that's not much, which is why I'm so pissed of about this whole ring of light issue. To add insult to injury, MS won't send me a box, so I have to pay for shipping to get it there, they won't just let me mail in my 360 with a copy of my receipt, so I have to wait 72 hours before I can even get an address to ship to, and I don't really think they know what causes the problem, so I'll get one back good for another 3 months. - Whoeverxxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Our first Xbox 360 lasted about 10 months before it went out but the DVD rom drive would scratch a disc beyond repair every once in a while from the very start, lost 4 or 5 $60 games this way. The second 360 only took 3 weeks to go out, found out 3 flashing red lights means death to your hardwhere incase you don't know that yet. We are on the third one now, I hope I dint have to wrap another up any time soon and take it back for an exchange again.
- cmsfootball46, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0Xbox 360's come with a FREE 3 year Replacement warranty on the 3 Red Flashing Lights,
just FYI.
why spend 60, or 80 dollars getting it fixed - cmsfootball46, on 01/26/2008, -0/+0Ha,
Xbox 360's.
the wonder of gaming,
if they didn't have so many damn hardware failures,
i just sent back my 3rd, (3), Xbox 360.
I'm tired of getting a new one for 6 months,
and having to wait another month after it breaks to get another one,
why not just perfect the software,
save Microsoft money,
US time:) - AC3XIII, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This fix is ok but I've seen a much better one on http://www.howtogetfreestuff.info/ - fixed mine over a month ago and it's still running smooth!
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1xbox 360s don't come with a 90 day warranty. They come with like 4 or 5 months. Most of the 360s now are still under warranty. Suprising isn't it?
- picneec13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cool. too bad i haven't shelled out the cash for a 360 yet... but if i did, i think i would get an extended warranty.
- sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yeah, but with a 99 year warrenty i wouldn't open up my 360 either.
BTW, was that a typo, or did they really mean to give you a 99 year warrenty? - z93e, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0needed step by step pics :( no digg
- TetsuoSama, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0"There's a 3% chance that you will get a defective 360 which is pretty much the same with most electrical products these days."
Where did you get that figure from? Microsoft?
I'm not going to jump on the anti-Sony bandwagon here (because I've hated them for years) but the last time I heard of such a statistic was with the PS1. I used to work in a game shop at the time, and the failure rate (laser alignment) of the machine was huge. Not just in one batch, not just in one revision - over many years.
In one of our popular magazines, Sony addressed the issue saying that they had a failure rate of about 0.5%. What pissed me off was that it was obviously a problem, yet it wasn't fixed over many revisions of the machine. Haven't bough Sony since and I don't think I ever will.
I'll be keen to see how Microsoft go about fixing these as my XBox 1 has been a reliable machine and their PC hardware is usually quite solid. - Spht, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3And this is why I am not going to get a 360.
Every console discussion board has 360 owners reporting their machines dying almost every day. And an absurd number of people have already gone through 4 or 5 360s in just 7 months.
400 bucks for the non-retard 360
+extra money for an extended warranty
+ more every year for online play
+ very expensive accessories
too much for a console that clearly has a huge hardware defect problem
My old Xbox and my pc will be more than enough for me.
