- pathy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27How very superficial.
Firstly, STALKER isn't an RPG. It may have some elements that come from RPGs, but it isn't one. It's a FPS.
As for your points,
1) Most of the dialogue for the main story arc is scripted, with only the random STALKERS etc you talk to not being voiced - Although their random chatter is voiced, and in Russian, which is nice and adds to the atmosphere, I feel. Also, Oblivion was notorious, and it was one of the main annoyances of the game, in that a lot of the people in the world said the same thing, in the same voice, over, and over, and over, and over.
2) This is a valid point, but for me I've not had any problems. I seem to be one of the lucky ones as I've not encountered many crashes, I play with pretty much everything maxed out, etc - and my rig isn't super-top-of-the-line anymore, atleast not since the 8800s, nor is it SLi.
3) If they're mod team quality, then it's a very bloody good mod team. Animations may be a bit lacking in some cases, but certainly when you look at the enemies like the Snorks and bloodsuckers, they have superb animations that are really fitting with their 'characters' - And also, the level of detail on the textures that are not only on the characters but also the enviroment is very good in most cases. It could be better, but it's still a high level. The same goes for the models, a lot of them are very well done.
As far as I'm concerned, STALKER knocks the socks off of Oblivion for one thing - It's atmosphere. It's by far and away more engaging than Oblivion for me, although that may be because I wasn't exactly fond of Oblivion when I played it - never the less, I don't exactly think the two should be compared. Oblivion without a doubt has higher quality graphics, but STALKER isn't exactly a pile of crud. - PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24@thatgameblog:
shouting "dupe!" and then linking to a story you submitted is so ***** tacky i want to hit you.
you just assured that i will never ever ever visit your site. - TripcodeMel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19FIND STRELOK
KILL STRELOK - 0x0000ff, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18bugs aside, it's an awesome game
- duffman03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Wow, I was literally just playing that game. So far I think it's great... it has a nice dark feeling to it.
- RCcola159, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Grrrrreat, another 6 year wait!
- mehigh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8have you guys tried the amazing Stalker patch?
you can get it from http://www.thefloatingpoint.org/
It adds a lot of nice graphics stuff and fixes bugs - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Heh, for those of you who haven't played the game, there's a good reason for that being your mission.
STALKER has a seriously awesome plot, it's sad that it wasn't conveyed that well throughout most of the game. I encourage people that play it to make sure they get the good endings, as there are quite a few.
For anyone else that isn't going to play the game, or doesn't mind about spoilers, there's a good write up of the plot on Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:_Shadow_of_Chernobyl - theonlyvlad, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Mmm, I hope they up the quality. I just bought the game a week ago along with Shivering Isles, and started playing. The thing is, Oblivion set the bar so damn high for any role playing game that it's hard to revert. I have a few problems with Stalker right off the bat:
1) Not fully voiced. Again, Oblivion somehow managed to record every single line of dialogue in the game and fit on a DVD. In this day and age reading paragraphs takes me out of the game, when whoever I'm talking to keeps repeating some generic pre-recorded greeting while I "IM" with his more intellectual self.
2) Graphics - the game looks pretty, but isn't as optimised. I'm comparing everything to oblivion because if I hadn't played that, I probably wouldn't be complaining. For the level of visuals that Stalker offers, the performance is too laggy.
3) Models, textures, animations. They don't look A grade. Especially animations. The switch from standing and talking to walking is quirky and jagged, along with everything else. Animations and models really feel independent mod-team quality.
I'm glad these guys are making this concept into a game. It's a kickass concept, (I read the book and the movie that this is loosely, looooooooooooosely based on). And the fact that this game is $40 and not $60 helps. But I feel if they really want to compete, they have to up their ante a bit. - ortucis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6They should concentrate on follow-up patches for now. Stalker is a great game (ignore some retarded endings that doesn't make any sense at all) and I have finished it twice (still a lot of missions and story left.. amazing). It's almost as good as Oblivion and DeusEx (ok, DeusEx is untouchable god of FPS/RPG) but needs a lot of tweaking.
For starters, the AI is great, but all those previews made it sound like truly next-gen AI that will be more human than anything out there. It's not. It's good like RainbowSix Vegas and FEAR AI, even better in some areas, but it's more of a combat AI than anything I was expecting it to be (more human). I am expecting some advancements in the sequel I believe, and more interesting hero and side-quests (which are crap, mostly). Also, considering Oblivion, FEAR and even Doom3 worked without any lagging on highest quality on my PC, I find it amazing that STALKER runs like crap (mostly shadows fault) even though it doesn't look that amazing anywhere.
Oh, and add females in-game.
EDIT: BTW, why the hell are they busy fixing and improving MP (in next and current patch) while Stalker is more about SP experience? Shouldn't the priority be fixing SP? Like the quests where the damn quest givers die leaving the quest active and.. that's it. Talking about the Freedom base quest. - M4tt3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Stalker is with out a doubt one of the most bugged games since Boiling Point, and they go on to plan a "franchise".
I know some of you may like the game, but some of us actually payed $40 for a game and can't even play it. It's so full of game stopping bugs, which makes this game, imo, a bigger joke than Boiling Point. Especially now that they announced follow ups with out releasing the promised SDK or a decent patch.
And if you don't believe me, or want to just digg me down for talking "bad" about your precious, first look here.1000+ threads

(Word of advice. Save often, create multiple saves (around 20) - that way you can always go back and fix something.) - Bundini, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Also, unless your story is complete conjecture (in which case, I don't recommend saying anything at all), don't leave so many questions unanswered. Stop with the question marks in the title. Seriously, it seems like only game writers do this and it pisses me off. We're the only legitimate industry where someone can write an article based solely on total speculation and call it news.
Your piece poses unnecessary hypothetical questions. Stop looking for information that isn't there; report on the facts that were provided via press release or contact the company in question directly. Unless you have information to suggest otherwise, let the public decide whether or not they think it's STALKER 2 or a STALKER MMO or a console version. Otherwise, just leave out your own musings. - Jonny0stars, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5S.T.A.L.K.E.R. although i found a entertaining game i found it to bloody hard even on easy and im no n00b in regards to FPS.
It actually turned out the artifacts had damaging effects as well as good ones so i was carrying round anomalies which caused 15%+ radiation poisoning so i was constantly dying... i manged to get to level 4 until i found out.
I managed to just about finish the game (last level) when i lost interest i couldn't find any decent guides to avoid the Hinds tried a good 10 times and give up.
I think they should of made this game easier and a little shorter it looses its effect after a while although brilliant value for money, there should of been more advice and less chitchat as the vast majority of it did not help.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4A FPS game getting a sequel? NO FREAKING WAY! I'm so excited.
- tehzombie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Did anyone else read this thinking there was a series of games being made based on them?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3go play a wrestling game.
- nlevend, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Actually, that Katrina game you mentioned sounds pretty entertaining.
BTW, take a chill pill, the only reason that they would be based on real events is because it would give it a connection to reality, that way it seems like a more plausible situation, adding a deeper aspect to the game. - tdawson2012, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I haven't had any problems with the game as far as bugs *shrug* Update your system maybe?
I wasn't sure about the game at first, but the more I have played it, the more I like it. Definitely needs some adjusting in a few game play aspects, but other than that they did a good job of creating a dismal yet interesting atmosphere. - rollerboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3they have an engine, might as well use it.
- 6or4n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The major letdown for me in Oblivion were repetitious underground environments. I played it for days and then put it aside, never touched it again since. Stalker I started to play and couldn't stop playing until the very end.
- pathy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Because STALKER is just SO like every other FPS out there!
- KineticShampoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is great news! I liked Stalker and the gameplay did have it's flaws. It had so much potential, but hey, the building blocks are set; I say now we let them make Stalker 2 even better.
Can't wait. - Nlewis4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3they should fix the game they released before they think about making sequels.
- neodorian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@0o0moylan0o0: That sucks. I had a much better experience. I've got a core2duo running at 2.4ghz, 1024 MB DDR800 and a 7900GS and it runs fine with all of that turned on. The only thing I skipped is FSAA but I usually do since it's an inordinate amount of performance hit for the added bonus. As long as I can run at 1280 I don't seem to need FSAA too much anyway.
I liked that game but I still haven't gotten around to beating it. Very cool concept and I really like the mood it creates although I agree that it can be a little twitchy if you aren't running with good hardware and want to get all the dynamic lighting and such. - JonnyTrombone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Stalker is a game with a strange history- it's based on a soviet-era Russian movie which was in turn based on a Russian sci-fi novel that went through only one printing (and was never translated). If you haven't seen the movie, by Tarkovsky, I highly recommend it. It should be noted that the 'snow' in some scenes in the movie was actually chemical fallout from a nearby industrial plant- and many people associated with the film later died of cancer.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sorry for spoiling the plot, I didnt even think about that when I wrote the comment.
Everyone who doesnt want to read the spoiler, dont read my above comment, and digg it down if you like. - EbowUK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is good news. Although it seems market forces conspired to get the original out with the few problems it has, it's definitely a good first release by the development team and I'll be watching their future work with interest.
And to the people that are bitching about the bugs etc, WoW has a known bug at the moment preventing quests being picked up (loot quests), and that game has the financial backing of a small (or large?) european country... - daedalus779, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good points sir! The game offered something relatively new to the shooter genre, yet was lacking in multiple areas.
- tsctsc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Don't worry. The sequel will be out in time to hold you over until the original is patched.
- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2same, just stopped playing it like 1/2 hour ago
- fabioromeu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don´t you love silly acronyms? Maybe they´ll do a trilogy! After S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we could get V.O.Y.E.U.R. and P.A.P.A.R.A.Z.Z.I.!
- eQUIV, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sweet, I can't wait to play these in December 2019!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When I started playing the game, I didn't expect much in terms of plot however I was definitely blown away by the scale and the intricacies of the plot.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Maybe they should work on a better graphics engine, and not take more than half a decade to release its follow-up title.
Like sure if you have a 8800GTX you can run the game fine... Ive got an X2 4600, X800GTO, 1024 DDR2. You cant have dynamic lighting on because the graphics card cant handle it, you cant take it off and put all textures up to balance it out, because you need more RAM.
Take Flatout and Flatout 2 for example, give it a 1Ghz processor, and a FX5200, you can run it at 1024x768 with almost full detail, and it looks nicer than Stalker. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Stalker most certainly IS an RPG. It's basically single player WOW with guns. The inventory system, is very similar, there are factions to gain favour with, you accept and redeem quests, there are dialogue trees, you spend most of the game running around a huge open-ended environment...
An RPG doesn't have to be fantasy-based. Just look at Fallout or Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. - maxstr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I actually bought this game instead of downloading it, and even after upgrading to 2 GB of RAM and patching the game, it still runs like ass.
- McNubbins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is sweet as hell...I'm right at the end now, probably beat it tonight. Took me a month of on and off play to get through and I was expecting it to be a sort of cult classic. I'm glad they're bringing it back, this is some of the best gaming news I've heard about in a while.
It would be awesome with some MMO elements. - NihilFist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Synthetic Transforming Android Limited to Killing and Efficient Repair ?
Just curious... - McNubbins, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not to mention the fact that the game has almost nothing to do with the Chernobyl meltdown. It's only used as a setting.
- MisterNetHead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Bugs or no, you have to admit its a good game. And it can only get better...
- wakkow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Those artifacts won't damage or help you until you wear them. Just carrying them doesn't do anything. I couldn't tell by your post which you meant.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2great! just what we need--another game that exploits another tragedy. games like call of duty and stalker just plain suck. they're no better than those fps based off of the columbine and va tech massacres. while you're at it, why not make a game called, "hurricane katrina: escape from new orleans?" how 'bout one based off the iraqi war? i can see the tagline now... "will YOUR son make it out alive?"
y'know, there ARE PLENTY of OTHER games that AREN'T based off real life catastrophes like a great war and a nuclear meltdown. games like quake, half life, halo, and even counter strike and rainbow six come to mind. - Spo8, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Let's hope these have much less bad in them. Because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has lots of bad, even though it showed more potential than any other recent game.
- KobraKommander, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I had no problems running S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at all on my laptop.
I have a somewhat slow processor on it also.
my setup:
core 2 duo 1.66 ghz t5500 2MB 667 MHz processor
2 gigs of dual channel memory
ati x1900 with 256MB mxm3
so why is it so many people are having so much trouble running this game? I have a mid range system also.
BTW I think the game is very good and the whole story and concept was awesome. - ThatGameBlog, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2PATSCRU, it's good to see people speak their minds. Thanks for the little laugh.
(No, this isn't one of those clever responses to come out on top. Really, thanks for the laugh.) - nevaseez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I just updated to patch 1.0003 and the game now works quite good!
- jockser, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Cool but how about a fix for the first one ?
btw path 1.000003 dont do ***** but maybe 1.673242 ? - olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8I understand your concern that your story might not make front page, but when stories are so young (10~ diggs) there are bound to be many multiple stories. The one with the most creative/eye catching title gets front page usually. Instead of complaining about dupes, try coming up with more creative titles. This title is suspenseful, while yours gives the whole story away so there really isn't a point to clicking.
Anyways, I really wasn't too fond of S.T.A.L.K.E.R but i'll give the sequal a shot :). - BuckFush, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1@ 0o0Moylan0o0, thanks for the spoiler! thats something I would have preferred to find out in the GAME not reading your comment. but thank you.
