- kingUssop, on 10/12/2007, -16/+121I agree. probably used some placeholder graphics, and forgot. wow, 2-3 textures out of thousands, it's the crime of the century. not.
- AJRiddle, on 10/12/2007, -30/+133What's really sad is that they expect us to pay $50 for a game and not pirate it when they steal images from other games to make theirs!
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+90@Teaboy
In the article, id software's CEO shows they were unaware of the images use in s.t.a.l.k.e.r; it goes without saying that if they weren't even aware, its unlikely they gave permission - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -22/+105Do we know that they don't have permission to use them?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61No you didn't.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53"Dude, this lightmap looks really similar to what I saw in Doom 3! I better investigate..."
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -10/+60Tiny mistake by an understaffed, indie dev.
- autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -10/+54It doesn't make the game any worse, you know.
In my opinion, STALKER is one of the strongest releases so far on all platforms this year and that piece of news doesn't change it. - TheSquirrelKing, on 10/12/2007, -6/+49theft != imitation
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41As someone commented on that article's comments page, it is possible that they licensed some content pack or somethign from a 3rd party, which was also licensed by ID and Valve. Not sure if it's true, but it's a possibility.
- Farik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39*Ukranian.
- skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42...If Carlos material was actually funny...
- supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39I agree. Some placeholder graphics were not replaced, big deal. The real crime is when these developers spend millions of dollars cloning each others games instead of coming up with new stuff.
Big deal. patch the graphics out. Wow. Non-story. - deamon20, on 10/12/2007, -13/+46Pretty sad.
- kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35I think the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers were counting on "absolutely no one".
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -11/+42The Carlos Mencia of video games?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36They're water bumpmap textures or something. They probably come with the DirectX SDK.
- UPSLynx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Marcuschi is right, CS weapon models and sounds were placeholder graphics during development. These stolen textures could very well be letf over placeholders. Do we have any confirmation that these maps and textures were actually used in the games release?
- NtHammer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29is it possible that both of them used a 3rd party company to make some textures...?
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Funny, I don't recall S.T.A.L.K.E.R. consisting of pitch-black textures...
- down4twenty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers.
- SolInvictus, on 10/12/2007, -20/+44"Tiny mistake", like when Winona Ryder stole a whole bunch of clothes from a mall with a security camera focused onto her.
- h4rdcor3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Who has the time to go through all the texture folders and actually compare them to other games?
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23@carsonauto
That's not true. The grass texture in Half-Life 2 is from a texture pack.
Check out the bottom of the page where it says "Some of our noteworthy users are . . ."

actually, stalker's opening price everywhere was $39.99 USD. - dpl_, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28@marcuschi
Why did you repost kingUssop's comment? - jm9206755, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21The Half-Life 1 engine was based off of the Quake 1 engine which Carmack just gave them pretty much. So if the Half-Life 2 engine includes any code from the original's (who knows how basic) then I suppose technically it is still a derivative work of the Quake 1 engine.
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18i remember the alpha releases had lots of placeholder graphics, most of the guns were straight from CS including the sounds.
- aspec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19they are also actually different. Not different enough that they don't look stolen, but they're not exactly identical.
- AJRiddle, on 10/12/2007, -12/+22@marcuschi
Wow. You stole yet another person's comment. I direct your attention to thecheeks's post 14 minutes ago (yours was 11 minutes ago from the time I posted this).
Welcome to my block list. - happyface0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The weapons are meant to be realistic.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Figures, I was really looking forward to this game, now it may never be released."
It's already out!! - Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It may not be as great as Half-Life 2, though it is definitely a lot more open/freeform, but it's still a fun game in a unique setting.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -10/+17you're kidding, right? it's one thing to copy.. but they used the same assets from another game. that's a big no-no junior
- insomuchas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Valve paid to license it for half life 1. Source was their first engine.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I doubt anyone did it like that. It was probably an avid Doom fan who noticed some unusual similarities after playing Stalker, and decided to dig around.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Why is down4twenty getting dugg down? it really stands for that.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7A) They could be licensed royalty free assets.
B) They could have made a duplicate from scratch.
C) They could be shader assets from the nVidia developer SDK.
D) ...
E) Profit! - powerslave19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Someone on shacknews posted an ingame comparison, it seems that a flashlight texture from doom 3 was used.
http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/267/flashlightsxh3.jpg - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It was well documented at the time that they were indeed CS sounds used as placeholders. Several gaming magazines who did previews of the game in '03 noted it too.
- LACHRYMIST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5check post times.
apparently copiers are a new thing on digg...seen them in several articles today. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6no, they said they had it but decided not to put it in there.
personally, i think they are full of it. they never had it and saw how popular it was when used correctly in HL2. - Sp00k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5early on in the game, the weapons suck and its difficult/impossible to aim... but as you get to the later stages of the game you find better weapons and i had no trouble landing headshots once i got my hands on a G36.
- happyface0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Combination of HL2 and Doom 3? I don't see any resemblance to either of them.
It's more like Oblivion, but not really... - LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a very important question that everyone seems to be forgetting to ask:
There is so much original content in STALKER, why the hell would they bother stealing a few, undetailed, small, unimportant textures when it would take literally only a matter of DAYS to create original ones? They're so simple that it's almost blatantly obvious that these textures are just generic ones available to anyone who wants them.
Having "imp" in the texture file name doesn't have to refer to the monster called an imp. At the link it says "imp fireball blast" but that's just speculation - that texture could be used for practically anything. - edosmund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There is a Soviet-era movie named "Stalker" which is based on the story "Roadside Picnic". A lot of concepts are the same or similar among these three things. There is a "forbidden zone" and in the movie a guy named Stalker takes people into the zone. In the game guys named stalkers go into the zone looking for artifacts and the secret behind it. In "Roadside Picnic" people enter the zone to look for artifacts. Of course there really is a zone around the Chernobyl site. It's called the Zone of Exclusion.
- 4eloBek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5stalker was soo long in developer so it was doom and half-life who stole its textures ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it already has been released 0.o
- Piggycow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh well the game is still fun
- jm9206755, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hadn't noticed the photographs. All I saw were the water textures and such.
