Believe. - TheTaoOfBill, on 03/08/2008, -6/+281I really wonder where the console market would be today if the dreamcast had been successful.
Everyone always credits Nintendo for being so innovative but really innovation was not much of a Nintendo trait until the Wii. Sega was always thinking ahead of the crowd and was never afraid to experiment. Unfortunately their biggest weakness was they innovated a bit too much and there was no filtering process. They came up with many great ideas but they also came up with many ***** wastes of money.
Many of the things Sega came out with on their systems were way ahead of their time.
They forced the market into the 16bit era back when Nintendo was enjoying the success of the 8bit market too much to believe they needed to advance their technologies. They opened up the video game market to more mature audiences. They were the first to come up with a download market place that worked through your cable called Sega Channel 11 years before Xbox live marketplace! They came up the first CD games. They paved the way for online multiplayer on consoles. They had the coolest memory card in the history of games for the dreamcast.
You really have to wonder where they would have gone next. - SpazAholic, on 03/08/2008, -43/+297Dreamcast? you mean the thing that was BETTER than the N64 and PS1?
- NoBullet2, on 03/08/2008, -4/+226The soul still burns...
- tekhna, on 03/08/2008, -1/+210Jesus, the Dreamcast is 10 years old?! I feel old... :(
- otatop, on 03/08/2008, -8/+155I'd hope it was better, since it was a console generation ahead of them.
- valardur, on 03/08/2008, -2/+131"Due the high volume of account requests, the service will be temporally suspended."
Yes, I can't get to the site, but the message makes me happy... I'm not alone :) - clearwaterlab, on 03/08/2008, -5/+104put together.
- ImmortalAzrael, on 03/08/2008, -1/+99Sega was always under-appreciated. The Dreamcast was my favorite console of all time. It was ahead of its time and had such unique games.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -1/+87I want to believe
- staffell, on 03/08/2008, -2/+80Hell yeah I still own a dreamcast.
- ImmortalAzrael, on 03/08/2008, -24/+102In my opinion it was also better than the gamecube and ps2
- TheTaoOfBill, on 03/08/2008, -6/+81There is a difference though. When Nintendo innovated it was because they felt they needed to in order to survive. The innovation Nintendo did was very rarely risky.
Sega innovated just for the hell of it. Which again is probably what killed them because they wasted money on hair brained projects. But Sega definitely kicked Nintendo's ass in innovation. - Hortnon, on 03/08/2008, -13/+85Mario 64, Analog sticks, Rumble Pak, 6 button controllers, batteries in cartridges, 3d acceleration on-cartridge, etc etc
Still, I think that Sega and Nintendo were both the real innovators. Sony and Microsoft just copied and added subtle "improvements". - burchie2, on 03/08/2008, -1/+65Poor Dreamcast, ahead of it's time and behind it's time (ps2, xbox, gamecube). Dreamcast 2? I'd buy it.
- whatthefu, on 03/08/2008, -2/+62I still have faith in Sega consoles. I loved the Genesis and the Dreamcast. Unfortunately the Sonic franchise has been nearly ruined, but it could easily be revived with just one great game.
- nreynolds, on 03/08/2008, -12/+72yeah, it's so hard to be better than two systems that came out years before you...
- digganbrew, on 03/08/2008, -0/+54Jet Set Radiooooooo!
- mkriss5681, on 03/08/2008, -1/+55Most underrated console ever. It was ahead of it's time.
- silentphoenix, on 03/08/2008, -2/+53dreamcast was only years ahead of its time
- CIAVT, on 03/09/2008, -0/+51Sadly it looks like a scam:
From the forums of http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t= ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Okay, It's fake as hell, as we suspected.
I forgot to to the most basics of basics when looking into this, I didn't check if this site was still hosted by SEGA. So I pinged dreamcast.com and lo' and behold http://72.29.74.51/ was the IP I got. It links to a cPanel set up page. I then pinged SEGA.jp and got the IP 210.174.184.7, SEGA.com: 204.155.67.210, Sonic Team: 202.3.142.231. All SEGA sites are no where near the IP range of dreamcast.com. Running a trace on this IP brings us right back to square one with DimeNoc/dizinc.
http://www.ssukstudios.co.uk/_rubbis..._com_trace. ... for a report from http://visualiptrace.visualware.com/
SEGA.com is run from San Francisco under their own, internal servers. SEGA.jp and Sonicteam.com are run from inside Japan, as you'd expect.
So to sum up, it's a site not on ANY of SEGA's servers, it's supposedly a Japanese site running on a shared server in Orlando, emails set out are from a dizinc email address, uses Gmail as a front for a Dreamcast email address, the site poses as an official website (including copyright marks from SEGA). It's fake, don't use it. If you have used it, as a few of you have, hope this comes to nothing.
------
Emails sent from dreamcast.com are emails actually sent from a dizinc.com email address, which forwards instantly to DimeNoc. I believe DimeNoc are a hosting company and are actually just the service provider for this scam.
This hit Digg's front page an hour ago, which was plenty of time for the registration page to go down. Looks like the people behind this just missed a literal gold mine of email addresses. But they took the page down, probably after getting a certain number of emails anyway, which I'm sure will get sold on to some Viagra companies. Oh happy days. It was a very believable scam, however. One which even I fell for, let this be a lesson to you all. Don't trust the internet. - punisher18, on 03/08/2008, -1/+49gah damn digg now i have to wait till traffic goes down to register my DC.
- johndi, on 03/08/2008, -5/+51Analog sticks were reintroduced by Nintendo in the '90s. They were common in the '70s before Nintendo made it's first console. The first game using force feedback? Hang-on developed by, you guessed it Sega. Six button controller? They brought that home from the arcade as well. Motion controllers? The Atari 2600 had that, and so did Mattel with the Power Glove. Nintendo has always been a great integrator. They have generally known what to include in a system, and more importantly what to leave out. Innovator? Not so much.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 03/08/2008, -2/+44I believe. I know any day now I'm going to wake up to news that Sega is re-entering the console race.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -4/+45Jet Griiiiiind Radiooo
- XsolidusX, on 03/08/2008, -8/+48*registers his dreamcast*
- xBBx, on 03/08/2008, -2/+39Looks like I have a reason to digg up my console. Where the hell am I supposed to dial in for internet service though? Damn cable modems and their ethernet connection!
- roguewriter, on 03/08/2008, -1/+34That you weren't even smart enough to sell it on eBay, shows a distinct lack common sense. Just because you didn't like it, doesn't mean there isn't a near-fanatical fanbase for the DC. You threw your money away. Don't blame it on Sega or on the DC being a "***** console."
- ImmortalAzrael, on 03/08/2008, -2/+34You speak the truth.
- waterdrop, on 03/08/2008, -0/+32Sega Dreamcast is by far my favorite game console of all time. It is the most innovative console of all time, and it deserves respect. I was saddened when I found out they stopped making it.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 03/08/2008, -4/+36We're talking about the system not the games on the system. Before the dreamcast failed it had the best games by far. They only got ported after it failed.
The system itself was absolutely an amazing system and most definitely was better than the PS2 and Gamecube.
Especially Gamecube. The gamecube had absolutely no special features. No innovation.
The dreamcast had a couple of amazing features that were revolutionary for it's time. Online multiplayer for one. And it was easy to get online to play. Something Nintendo still hasn't mastered. It had it's own browser, something that was only done again this generation with the Wii. And unlike the wii, Sega made it's game saves downloadable so people could upload their game saves and trade them with other players online. That has yet to be done again! It was such a cool feature to be able to download saves from anyone.
Imagine that today. What if the Wii had that feature. What if you hated super smash brother's single player mode but you wanted to unlock the secret characters. All you'd have to do is get on the browser and download the saves directly to your flash drive and boom. Everything is unlocked.
The dreamcast also had some of the first games with downloadable content that expanded on games like Shenmue.
And one of my favorite features was the ability to take your game on the go with the VMU. Not to many games actually used the VMU but it was possible to have 2 games in one by playing on your VMU memory card which had a screen and a controller for very simple pixelated side quests.
There is no doubt that the Dreamcast was the best system of that generation. Followed by the xbox then PS2 then gamecube. - lukas88, on 03/08/2008, -1/+30Innovation and the games released are what makes a system fun. Timing of release and marketing are what make a system popular. Unfortunately, dreamcast was only successful in the first category.
- SSUK, on 03/09/2008, -1/+28This is most definately NOT what you think it is. Read up on what people have been saying:

http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showpost.php? ...
Do NOT give them your email address, however tempting the offer of a @user.dreamcast.com domain is. All signs point to this as a scam and not SEGA Japan's work. Buried, but in a vain attempt to stop people handing over email addresses. - z3021017, on 03/08/2008, -0/+26I bought a Dreamcast just to play Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and boy it was worth it.
- houndeyex, on 03/08/2008, -2/+28Due the high volume of account requests, the service will be temporally suspended.
- stardrummer, on 03/08/2008, -3/+28I am trying to believe.
- gamerzworld, on 03/08/2008, -4/+29I have a dream.....Dreamcast 2.
- KrazyA1pha, on 03/09/2008, -1/+26BEWARE, THIS IS A SCAM!
Unfortunately, I handed over my email address before reading around. Here is a conversation about this 'deal':

There are plenty of other warnings if you Google around:

Please bury this submission accordingly! - sdigroup, on 03/08/2008, -3/+27Best system ever made. too bad Sony monopolized the gaming would with the playstation. SEGA will always be a true gaming system with no-nonsense. Just bought 2 new sealed systems on ebay. Marvel VS CAPCOM 2 best fighting game "."
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -0/+24Sword of the Berserk and Skies of Arcadia were two of the best games i ever played.
- wellzy4eva, on 03/08/2008, -8/+32And on that day... Satan will be going to work in a snowplough

- hadak, on 03/08/2008, -3/+25Jet...SET...radio.
- Volaitle86, on 03/08/2008, -0/+22Viva La Dreamcast!
- indiancompanion, on 03/08/2008, -0/+21they seem to only be good on a SEGA system. Am i the only one to notice that, because people say sonic went down the toilet in 3D, but I bring up the Dreamcast ones whicn were pretty awesome, IMO.
- inactive, on 03/08/2008, -0/+20My son still breaks out the DreamCast now and then, so we can play Soul Caliber, one of my all time favorite games.
- dslozak, on 03/09/2008, -0/+19You're wrong.
