- marix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+74huzzah for non-proprietary storage media!!!
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31This has been know since.... when? Last year?
What is really interesting about this article is: "An interview by Game Informer with Nintendo USA President Fils-Aime revealed that the SD card is "one of the memory mediums, and it’s the only one that we’ve announced.""
Come on hard drive! - schleufer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to get myself a Wii. A standard storage format is simply too cool for words. I have a boatload of SD cards here.
PS3 can suck my balls- I haven't heard anything from Sony that makes me say WOW! (except the friggin price).
Don't get me wrong, I love my Playstation and PS2, but Sony just isn't giving me a reason to upgrade.
I still love my XBox too, and will probably get the 360 sometime next year (I've learned not to buy first Gen consoles, it is too painful). - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30SD is proprietary...
Don't you mean less proprietary? - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20^^ A healthy home brew scene isn't necessarily a problem.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18the wii has been confirmed to accept usb hard drive mediums... like your ipod, etc. :-)
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16But it was implemented http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=78&products_id=776&
- mkp2k4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Internet Explorer only? NOOOO -- wait -- what does that even mean?
- thatbox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13MGS4 will be a seven hundred dollar game :(
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"problem" is a very relative term... I'd say it'll open up the ability to play 3rd party or indie games on the virtual console... not to mention a very easy, affordable method of expanding memory.
I give it two weeks before someone creates an easy-to-use GUI for converting roms and game saves to a VC format. - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I wouldn't worry about that. Nintendo is known for their consoles being hard to hack. Think GameCube.
- Acidosis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10...Its because your name is broomrape...
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm sticking with my Flux Capacitor theory....
- thelastknowngod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i wonder if we will be able to use the sd card to save games rather than an ultra proprietary memory card.
- vdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I wouldn't say that this site has a Wii bias. If it's a better console then people will support it, simple as that.
- vdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Motion sensing controllers, Nintendo's back catalogue online, a storage medium that really is universal (UMD? yeah right), and games by Shigeru Miyamoto? Sony's going to have a tough time getting me to buy a PS3.
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You're right - was announced a while back. Is hardly news.
And it's very likely hard drives will be allowed as well - think the only hurdle being is Nintendo figuring out a damn secure way to avoid piracy (especially with their Virual Console games). - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6but.. but the ps3 has teh graphix!!!!! dont you understand?!?!
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8First of all, now I understand what all those Wii-bashers are saying about Digg being a highly Wii biased site. This "article" is hardly more than a paragraph and the content is so old, I thought it was common knowledge by now.
What I'm wondering about is that USB port. Does that mean we could potientially plug a mouse and keyboard into our Wii's? - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Any sized SD card plus a USB SD reader means unlimited memory storage. This will also probably make homebrew and such easier. Look how far hackers got with the PSP just because it used memory stick. Nintendo tends to be less resistant about these things.
If the SD means easy homebrew, that's icing on the cake. Fun for kids, fun for retro adults, and no fun for hackers. Fun for EVERYONE.
(Except bankers. PS3 is the most fun for them...) - briguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What do you mean, I don't have to pay $35 for a proprietary 80mb card? The insanity!
- FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sense you can get 2GB SD card for less then $45 shipped, I wonder what the prices will look like when the Wii ships.

This is a lot more storage then the XBox360 Memory Cards for the same price.

- liveinabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, VERY old news. The SD card will hold game saves and other information, however, from every interview I've seen so far, it seems that your virtual console games only get stored on the system memory. I hope that isn't the case as it's only 512Mb.
- michaelschmitt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I was referring to the small capacity of SD cards that are included in the box with digital cameras and are quickly replaced by larger capacity cards by the owner. Those smaller capacity cards will now find a use with the Wii. Shouldn't need explaining, right?
Thanks for your vote, broom. - michaelschmitt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Cool. Now all those small cards that come with digital cameras will actually be useful.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gamecube was difficult to hack due to its special mini-dvds and the lack of a (built-in) ethernet port, but was eventually defeated like most consoles by exposing a network exploit in its only online game. All of these obstacles are pretty much gone in the Wii's case, so it's safe to assume that it'll be much easier to hack.
I bet they'll take the barcode system they developed on the GC discs (each disc had a visible-to-the-eye barcode on its inner rim) and apply it to the Wii's DVD discs to make it impossible to copy them without a firmware hack, though. Not to mention that they're using dual-layer DVDs, which aren't quite mainstream yet. Either way, it'll definitely be harder to defeat than the Xbox and PS2, but probably not as difficult as the X360. - PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I meant it as a really good thing, not a bad thing.
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If these virtual games are ROMS couldn't you take them off put them on your computer and play them in ZSNES or P64. Of course that's not nearly as fun as playing with the wiimote. : ) Grats Nintendo on the choice, your making me respect you more and more!
- TimRogers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yey! This is gonna be so good, I have to get a Wii on launch day! I'd love some homebrew scene, especially if Nintendo decided to condone it, I could imagine things like Skype for Wii.
- mark925, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This has been known since E3 '05. Old Old Old.
- emperor799, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought this was a NEWS site. This FACT has been listed on Nintendo.com since the Wii specs went up.
http://wii.nintendo.com/hardware.html - andygravity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is pretty cool news. i imported a play-yan micro for my GBA, which is a first party MP3 and movie player for gameboy and DS, which uses SD cards to store the media. here's to hoping they bring this product stateside and provide direct content downloads, or a similar device for downloading and playing GBA/DS games.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really old news. I'm happy about it though since I got a free 1GB SD card last year.
- armosfighter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, you need something to save those downloaded nintendo games on...
- Antz0rz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Sweet, now I won't have to buy any separate memory cards and crap.
Also, hax ftw. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Why did this comment go to -1?
Is it because he implies that SD cards are not currently useful, which "elite" Digg members interpret as a sign of newb-ness? - Muhahahahaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I give it two weeks before someone creates an easy-to-use GUI for converting roms and game saves to a VC format."
That would be totally awesome! Actually, maybe you are talking about downloaded ROMs as opposed to the actual original cartridge... either would be cool, but one of them would be illegal and stomped out by the big N.
I would love it if someone created a way to convert cartridges to VC format, though. I actually have some original cartridges that they won't be releasing for the VC, at least according to the initial list. I have the very first Star Wars game for the NES and it is so difficult! I've only beat it once, and more recently my NES has been crapping out on me... :'(
I also bought the original Final Fantasy cartridge somewhat recently, but I never really got to use it since, as I said my NES is going south on me. I wonder if they will release the FF series on VC? I hope so, but they've also been re-released elsewhere, so it makes me wonder. I doubt they will release any of the Star Wars games, but I can only hope.
Either that, or I hope for someone to develop a way to copy the cartridges. :-D - fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And they would be doing us a favour at selling it too us at the price
- schleufer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow, and all this time I thought Nailbunny was a fan of "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac".
Who knew they were actually a prison bitch? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Wish I had seen this last week. I opted for a USB mp3 player over expandable SD, because I didn't think I'd have any other use for an SD card. Now I'll probably start looking for a nice SD camera after November.
- Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If you don't like a story, don't click it, problem solved. But then you wouldn't be able to whore for attention now would you.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is old news, they alsosaid that it will work with any USB mass stoarge device, such as a thumb drive or a external HD.
- Dymphna, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Old news, but it's Wii so hey...it gets digged.
Hey everyone, Nintendo is releasing a new portable with TWO SCREENS! - Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2It'd be hilarious if Nintendo includes memory sticks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Unless YOU downmodded me for that specific reason and no other, you can't say that.
Lots of Digg members have offensive names and don't get downmodded.
Here's one example:
http://digg.com/users/nailbunny/comments/
2. nailbunny
A person who puts out in prison; Aka Prison Bitch.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nailbunny
In comparison, my name is downright wholesome...almost FLORAL.
Broomrape (Orobanche):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broomrape - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Wow, and all this time I thought Broomrape was a type of plant.
Who knew they were actually a rapist?
You ***** retard. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Well it wasn't implemented fully and realised by users.
Sort of how they could've used it to input user-created content for games and stuff like that.
Or to transfer saves online, or get content from developers directly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Really. Is that a revenge mod by disgruntled Digg 3.0'ers?
Nobody else has commented that this will increase the adoption of SD media, so it's not a duplicate, and no similar comment has been downmodded.
I realize that it's late on a Saturday night, so most of the people here are probably drunk or tired, and people tend to skim comments quickly anyway, so if the point is not clear within a few seconds the comment is either misinterpreted or ignored, but that comment was only two lines long and specifically linked Wii SD-compatibility to the purchase of an mp3 player and camera; the point is not that hard to grasp.
The only explanation I can come up with is that some of the 1,000-plus members I've offended over the past few days took it upon themselves to downmod my comment for no good reason. - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2s/mediums/media/
