- ErinIsADrunk, on 10/11/2007, -21/+100PSP has a lot of good games. Just because the DS had more quality titles then PSP doesn't mean that there are no good games for the PSP. Luminees, MGS: Portable Ops, LocoRoco, Daxter and Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters are just some of the great games on the PSP. SIlent Orgins isn't that far off as well as Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles. Anyone who says the PSP has NO good games is an ignorant fanboy.
- saikhan, on 10/11/2007, -13/+74Don't forget God of War: Chains of Olympus!
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -22/+81So you're suggesting they redesign the PSP and remove the UMD drive, destroying compatibility with every existing game in the process?
That sounds like a swell plan. Be sure you pass it along to Sony, I'm sure they'll take you up on it. - GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -11/+64Alright, what should Sony have done about it? Give it a DVD player to hold 4.72" DVDs?
UMDs were developed for this brand. Sony doesn't want the UMD to replace the DVD. They just needed a small disc for usage with the PSP.
People keep bringing up Betamax as an insult to Sony. That's just ridiculous. It's literally like saying, "Haha, you created a product that was better in every way, but didn't market it well! Morons!". Betamax was cheaper, smaller, had better quality, and it was faster at winding / rewinding. Betamax was used in the professional industry for the reasons, so that they wouldn't lose the amount of quality VHS lost.
It's not insulting Sony, it's insulting the consumers. "We didn't buy your superior product because you didn't market it well".
You're making yourself seem like an idiot. - iheartartoo, on 10/11/2007, -16/+60That's like saying that DS cartridges are doomed to failure. UMD's are good for the PSP, and it works.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -12/+49There is a good reason for UMD and MD. let me just find the betamax that explains it... one sec.
- leth4l, on 10/11/2007, -4/+34"Betamax was used in the professional industry for the reasons,"
Betamax is STILL being used in the professional industry. - devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30because you touch yourself at night.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -42/+63Sony needs to face the fact that UMDs are the next generation of Mini Discs.. They're doomed to failure.
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -4/+24"what, the mini-dvd wasen't good enuff for them?"
Have you ever owned a portable system? The media needs to be durable. UMDs provide a casing that [mostly] protects the disc. There was no other medium on the market at the time that provided the durability and the capacity they wanted, so they were pretty much forced to invent something new.
And for *****'s sake, learn to spell. - grumbel, on 10/11/2007, -10/+29The PSP is also selling better then XBox360. The only thing the PSP doesn't do is outsell the DS, other then that its selling perfectly fine and with 25 million PSPs out there there really isn't a shortage of potential customers. What the PSP is missing however are those nice 5 minute break games, Metal Gear and friends are all nice and good, but I prefer much quicker games on a handheld, it doesn't have to be totally crazy stuff like on the DS, just good old-style 2D games would work great.
- EliasAlucard, on 10/11/2007, -30/+49There are lots of good games available. And more are coming as we speak.
- chris4404, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20As a gaming format UMD's work great but for Movies not so much.
- SpenceMasta, on 10/11/2007, -8/+24as someone who owns mini disc players and a psp i see your point, as negative as it may sound
- chocobomog, on 10/11/2007, -20/+34@PuyoDead
In two years, the PSP sold twice as much as the Gamegear/Lynx/NGage combined (as well as the entire lifetimes of the Gamecube and Xbox). It isn't just getting "some sales and a small chunk of the market", it is actually holding its own against the DS. The DS didn't start taking off until it was redesigned and many of the originals flaws were fixed. Now the PSP is doing the same and you say this is a mistake?
The biggest thing the PSP has for it is that it is a completely different system than the DS. Unlink the 360 and PS3, the games for the DS and PSP are designed completely different and would not work on the other system. The PSP is exactly what the name says, its like carrying a small PS2 in your pocket and has the same type of games. The DS has more mini-gmaes and games you can sit down and play for 5 minutes at a time.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14True, i don't know why people bitch about its battery life. WIth the screen brightness turned down i can easily play 6-8 hours of FF7 on the thing. Granted, its not using the UMD which will kill battery life a bit.
- Atom, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21Finally, I wonder what my Brick will go for in trade in. Hopefully Sony makes a deal w/ EB like MS did with their elite systems. And God I hope they go w/ a matte finish.
- CaptainNoPants, on 10/11/2007, -15/+28oh how I wish I hadn't bought that Sony MD player...what a waste.
@djsyndrome
I don't think he actually suggested anything. He stated that they are doomed to fail. - bob_the_alien, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16I disagree on the cheap thing, the DS lite and the PSP are only like 40 dollars difference in price in the United States, don't know the pricing in the rest of the world, but really that's not much at all.
So who's to say it's cheap, as compared to the PSP, it's less expensive, but not Cheap in prce in comparison.
Hell if the Wii were only 250, and the PS3 was only 290, I'm sure the PS3 would be selling like hot cakes as well. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15We don't know that the screen will have a smaller display area. The article stated that it would 'take up less space'; this could mean lower thickness or overhang beyond the viewable area.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18to add to bob_the_alien's comment, for an extra $40, you get a portable gaming system that also:
- shares photos
- surfs the web, checks e-mail, and gives you access to other web services
- plays videos on a bigger screen than the video iPod (and doesn't need headphones)
- plays mp3s
- plus all the homebrew apps available:
- PSPPDF/Bookr lets you read ebooks and PDF files
- Map This! with the GPS add-on turns your PSP into a GPS device
- tons of emulators
- pIRC - IRC client
- PiMPStreamer - streams music/video over LAN or internet
- PSP Universal Remote/iR Commander - turns your PSP into a universal remote
- PSP iTunes Remote - controls iTunes remotely
- SWFPlayer - plays flash videos/game
- XBMC Remote Music Interface - controls the XBox Media Center music player
- PSPRadio - lets you listen to internet radio/shoutcast
- WiFi Sniffer - wardriving tool
- PortableVNC - VNC client/viewer
- PSP FTPD - FTP server
- PSP HTTPD - HTTP server
- plus text editors, ti-92 (calculator) emulator, file transfer/sharing apps, calendars, organizers, ssh/telnet/ftp clients, python interpretor, java VM, etc. - Zephkiel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Try the reply button.
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14And yet it's outsold every other Nintendo handheld competitor in history - combined. I wouldn't call 20+ million sales as being on 'life support'.
You don't have to move DS-like numbers to be successful. The PSP is doing fine enough for Sony, and it's not bad for their first crack at the portable market. - aegis9975, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14UMD as a storage format for games makes a lot of sense; when you consider that most DS cartridges are 10-50MBs compared to the PSP games that are in the hundreds of megabytes can go up to 1GB, having cheap optical media makes a lot of sense if you don't want to pay an arm and a leg for games. It is however a poor medium to distribute movies, and I think that is where UMD gets a bad rap.
- devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16engadge, haha, that's pretty good. First... it's the N-Gage, get your failed handhelds right if you're going to act all smart. Second, the DS is not just selling better because of its "non-games" whatever those are. Pull your head out of your ass, you're in denial. More people want the DS because its got a bunch of good games, it has a cool way of interacting with the game, AND it's cheap. Kind of like the Wii!
- keithc01, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15WOW
I am really surprised at all the bitching. I just happen to feel that the original PSP is the best piece of hardware released by the gaming industry since the original Xbox. The PSP with the original motherboard, like the original Xbox, has fantastic modding capabilities that raise the value considerably. The biggest problem with the original PSP was the lack of the internal hard drive. The 8GB addition sounds great, but 80GB would be better. I'm personally not very excited about this new version because I highly doubt the motherboard will be fully soft-moddable.
I don't get where all the PSP hate is coming from. I mean we all love Nintendo but come on. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11But then you're limiting future software sales, forcing people to upgrade to the newest PSP if they want to play a title that requires a second analog stick.
- c0d3z3r0, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12If it willl be able to run homebrew, I might get one of these.
- kmb1794, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Pics or it didn't happen.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14they need to start bringing over more Japanese only titles. for instance, Mobile Suit Gundam: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. is actually a pretty awesome game based on the very successful arcade series. it works quite well on the PSP, and the graphics, gameplay & sound are all amazing. but most US PSP owners are unlikely to know about this game because it was only released in Japan. similarly, there are other pretty successful Japanese titles like the Naruto and Dragon Ball Z fighting games that US gamers have to import. these are just the Anime-related games that i know of simply because i'm familiar with those series. i'm sure there are tons of other great Japanese games that i have yet to discover, and unfortunately i will not be able to play many of them because they're in Japanese.
also, the PSP's main selling point for me personally is that it's a very powerful portable that does far more than play games. rather than a portable _gaming_ system, i'd call it a portable entertainment device. i use my PSP to read ebooks (currently with PSPPDF, but i might try Bookr). i also use it to listen to MP3s/podcasts, watch videos, and surf the web/check e-mail, and i'd like to try the GPS add-on with the Map This! homebrew. Sony needs to focus on these types of software enhancements and peripherals to exploit the power of the built-in hardware, because as of right now it's largely up to the homebrew community to do this.
an official PSP keyboard is crucial to enhancing the PSP's extra-gaming capabilities like web browsing/e-mail, instant messaging, and support for homebrew text-editors, IRC clients, etc. the MP3 player could also be enhanced to add organizational features and display album covers like the iPod. the built-in browser is pretty buggy and often runs out of memory, especially viewing graphic-intensive sites; fixing this should also be a high priority.
other simple software enhancements i'd like to see:
- WiFi file-sharing
- social network similar to XBox Live for communicating with friends/other users, finding games, etc.
- WiFi broadcasted profile that shows what you're currently listening/watching or playing/looking to play - thepolkapunk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Wait, why does the screen have to be improved? According to that rapping schmuck from the painful PSP music video, the PSP's screen is "Really tight"
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9No one confirmed anything. It's still just rumor.
- silverwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I honestly doubt that they will be shrinking the resolution or screen size. I'm guessing that the screen will just be thinner allowing for the bulk of the PSP to be significantly less.
Personally, I think this would help sell quite a few more PSPs. While the PSP is getting trounced by the DS, it's doing good for a first-time entry and is outselling everything in Japan besides the Wii and DS. - bob_the_alien, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9yes, it does run Linux,
http://df38.dot5hosting.com/~remember/chris/ - snoox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12I had a mini-disc player/recorder, it was great, I got alot of use out of it. This was before the ipods, people were totally jealous of it.
- tktechs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I look at My PSP as an alternative to the IPod. It has a larger screen than the IPod, it plays videos and music. It costs less than the IPhone. I can browse the web with it. It has a very good battery life. I just can't make a phone call with it but it provides a solid digital entertainment base and plays games!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+84X battery life seems like a stretch.
Yes, backlights got a much more efficient since the PSP was designed. But it was more like 2X, not 4X. And making the UMD drive faster is going to take more power to spin it faster or seek faster.
Unless they make the battery even bigger (and it's already enormous), I think 2X battery life increase is going to be the practical limit. If Sony makes 4X claims, they'll probably only be a few circumstances. - Kr4t05, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I was surprised to see that Sony did have movies on MSD Pro at Walmart. The Stick came with a choice of 4 movies, and an adapter. Whether or not this is meant to phase out the UMD format, or just as an alternative, I dunno. But, it's unique.
- mmortal03, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11If Sony had given the PSP the ability to write to the UMDs, they would have been much more successful.
- JayD16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I STILL think the UMD should have never been pushed as a mini video format. Sony should have came out trumpeting it as a hi def Audio format.
"Screw CDs and MP3s! The UMD is for the audiophile on the go...oh and you can put movies on it too..." I think it would have gotten a lot more love. - ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10So this will the the PSPOne, then?
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9I'm pretty sure everyone saying that "UMDs are doomed to fail" means for the movie and music market (yes, in Japan they also sell music on UMD). As a proprietary format for the games, it's fine, every system has a proprietary format. Even games that use CDs and DVDs have proprietary filesystems, which makes them difficult to copy (except, ironically, the PlayStations which use the ISO standard, making copying as easy as Nero or DVD Decrypter).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Hopefully they fire their WHOLE advertising department and stop with those god-awful PSP commercials. Seriously, I can't think of a single one that didn't get on my nerves (and then there's that "PSP for Christmas" commercial that tried not to be a commercial.... These people need to be fired)
- EggoTrip, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Never been much of a portable person - however I've been wanting for a long time this type of redesign for the PSP. Even though I dislike Sony products, I felt that because of the screen and button positions that the PSP was the best portable (the availability of homebrew is a primary factor). What was missing severely was an affordable method of having a large amount of storage - particularly if I wanted to put any movies on the device.
This may be enough for me to finally want one...we'll see though, it is still a rumor. - BobsYourUncle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5So you're complaining about UMD based on your friends buying movies in a format that isn't easily copied? I think you just validated Sony's decision.
- LoganT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+68 GB's? Sign me up. This is what I've always wanted the PSP to have.
- KyleMistry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I believe they mean thinner– LED screens take up less space than LCDs like that.
- giddytonk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I hope they build in some good way to 'connect the PSP to the TV'. The solutions out for that right now, are not too good IMHO (manual tweaking of hardware, mount a camara to the screen).
I'd rather have that connection ability than a camera. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It is completely different. I also have MD players, but the fact is that those were supposed to compete in the portable music department which is much more broad. UMDs are meant only for the PSP, and as long as the PSP is around, it won't be doomed to failure because it doesn't limit your ability to game cross-platform. Even with that being said, MDs did really well over seas, so I wouldn't be so fast to call it a failure. When I lived in Japan in 2001, there were more MD players than any other music players and they sold really well. They also recorded live music and studio music with great digital quality. It just didn't have time to flourish between the CD era and the MP3 era.
@aegis
I believe UMD goes up to 4+ gigs if I'm not mistaken and DS games have reached about 1 gig. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6The problem with the PSP was never the hardware. The PSP's hardware is far superior to the DS's. Sony should spend time coming up with better and more original software like Lumines and LocoRoco, instead of just making PSP versions of the PS2/PS3 games.
