- rabidmoose, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27I'll be all over this one if it's true. Been holding out on getting a 360 (mostly due to lack of extra $$), but methinks it's time to save up and get one. Plus there's plenty of games at bargain prices now.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20@arunforce
Don't say crap.
Microsoft have said time and time again that the games won't be going to the HD-DVD format. It's an add-on for movies, nothing more. Microsoft also said they weren't exclusive to the HD-DVD, of Blu-ray wins (god forbid) then they could release a Blu-ray Add-on if needed. - jayman16, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Well, you buy the new model. Does your car company owe you a new car everytime there's a new model of you car? NO.
- afex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18/me cancels appointment to go to car dealer later today
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Sony has an upgradeable drive though. You don't need a special HD.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Wait a sec........a $500 PS3 with Blu-ray is too much, but a $479 360 without HD-DVD is the perfect price? WTF!!! Sure you get HMDI, but so what. Is HDMI that big of a deal without an HD player? And a 120gig harddrive for $80 is still only half the capacity for a current harddrive similiarly priced.....actually now that I'm thinking of it I know why Microsoft is skipping the HD-DVD yet still keeping HDMI......downloading movies.......still 120gig harddrive is what 10 HD movies maybe.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13@ Tony
Blu-ray is outselling HD 3:1. Even if it may not dominate the standard DVD, it appears to be dominating the high def market for movies. Also evidence shows that it has potential in the computer media market. They have a higher capacity than HD discs and with Apple on the Blu-ray board of directors, who knows what will happen? That being said, not only is the movie aspect of Blu-ray interesting for the PS3, but it also gives more data space for game development. We are talking a $20 difference. Can you honestly tell me you wouldn't spend $20 for Blu-ray regardless of its future? Or are you speaking from the common digg "***** Sony!" standpoint? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12From the article, Microsoft is throwing in an HDMI cable. Thank god I don't have to deal with Best Buy employees pushing me to purchase the $99 Monster HDMI cable when I pick the new 360 up.
- poolboy82, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11nsmike...
Sure you get more HD space for $20. But you want to connect via Wi-Fi...oh sorry...that's an extra $100.
I'm a huge fan of the 360 but the nickle and dime style of the accessories is leaving less of a price difference between the 360 and PS3. And why do I just figure that the HD while available for "under $200" will still be at best around $169.99 if not $199.99? The price of that extra HD drive is going to be the key to how upset I feel about the whole thing. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7monoprice.com has very reasonably priced HDMI switch boxes.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -14/+21@arunforce -
You're 100% right.
But I'd rather not give my money to Sony.
You know a company has reached an all-time low when Microsoft is more appealing. - iamcrazyed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Who cares about RAM, HD and the details. It's BLACK! It's GOTTA be faster...
- poolboy82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I guess I am a little bit lucky here. My girlfriend has really wanted a 360 (she just loves her some UNO). Now I can get the new one and give her my old system. She'll be more than happy with that.
That doesn't mean I still can't see why this needs to be $479 and not $399 (replacing the current Premium). Can the larger HD and HDMI really explain the cost increase? Is it the new 65nm process? We'll see I guess, but if it isn't this 65nm process and it doesn't have built in WiFi then I have to just guess that the extra $79 is for a black case and that included HDMI cable.
I thought I was a Xbox Fanboy but I clearly didn't get the same serving of Flavor-Aid as the rest of the group. - acurism, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15@thediggman
This will kill the PS3, huh?
I don't think so...You are paying 480 for a larger hard drive and hdmi. That is it. Still no built in wifi, no hd-dvd.
The PS3 has all of the above already built in plus wifi, Blu-Ray, and it has a 60 GB hard drive. Also, if you feel the need to upgrade the hard drive for a bigger one, you can swap out the hard drive in the PS3 for a bigger one unlike the Xbox 360. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+16"if Blu-ray wins (god forbid)"
What the ***** is wrong with Blu-Ray? God forbid because Sony supports it? Guess what, so does every other media company in the world, with the only exception being Universal Pictures. The only reason Microsoft supports HD-DVD is because they want to ***** with Sony's PS3. They want to create doubt in consumers. Congratulations, you bought into it.
There is nothing wrong with Blu-Ray, and there is nothing wrong with HD-DVD. Blu-Ray is potentially better, though, because it's discs can store more data. - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm sure they'll still bother you.
"I know there's a cable in there, but if you want to see the color purple in your video then you'll need Monster" - SmokeN-DC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hope they will sell the bigger HD alone and some tools to move all your stuff to it all my HDMI connections are used up on my TV and my switch box does not support HDMI
- GlitchEnzo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I completely agree. I have been wanting to try out Gears of War, as well as tinker around with XNA a bit. I think this is a perfect opportunity for me to finally get a 360.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Engadget/Joystiq is reporting that the hdd will be sold alone as well:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/20/xbox-360-in-black-with-hdmi-april-479/ - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8So the latest rundown of Digg retardia:
$500 PS3 = Too expensive
$600 iPhone = Not expensive
$480 XBOX 360 = Not expensive
Wow, some masterminds are really at play here. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"And it has more DRM"
Last I saw it was as widely cracked open as HD DVD. You got any facts the share there son? - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5*Sigh*
I guess I'm going to have to buy a black case and mod my 360.. can't fall behind. - MrSteamTank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If this is true this is a horrible price point. I think it's an april fool's joke to be honest. The last thing microsoft would do is increase their price to near ps3 levels when that is the source of all of the ps3's grief.
Honestly, I think that microsoft will probably just knock 50-100 dollars off of the premium and the core. Maybe even packaging a memory card with the core as well to encourage their sales a bit. Then offer a big hard drive as an extra and call it a day.
They don't really have to do well right now. Just keep cost reducing and offering a few extra add ons. Who knows though, let's wait until either e3 or the europe release of the ps3 to find out. - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the 65nm chip is supposed to reduce manufacturing costs, actually. (smaller chips means greater yields from a single silicon wafer)
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The rumor pics showed the existing port above the hdmi port. The current box supports optical out on the s-video, component, and vga cable hookups so you should be able to just hook either of those up above the hdmi for optical. Of course you'll have to do something about the extra video/audio cables hanging out but the ability to do optical is there.
- henrythehorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4PS3 is still the better choice no matter how many times someone may tell themselves it isn't.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Offering the new 360 at close to the price of a PS3 and not eliminating the Core SKU would be dumb as hell.
- AdamGott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am still waiting for the oft-rumored price reduction to kick in ($100 cheaper for the two base units).
- pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@flynnz -- My television (HP MD5880n 58" DLP) doesn't support 1080p through its VGA connection. Many do not.
"doesnt really matter for gaming. I guess I mean from a gaming standpoint who cares? (seeing how the only game that is native 1080p is virtutennis and all)"
Well, that's kind of a stupid thing to say. Virtua Tennis is one of the first, but there are obviously more to come. And people who have displays that can handle 1080p would rather have their games displaying in progressive video.
It doesn't matter what percentage of the market we're talking about-- if Microsoft is marketing to people who want HD DVD movies and 1080p resolution, then a significant number of THOSE people (and increasing by the day) are going to want HDMI as well. If you're happy with your wood-paneled RCA set, I really don't give a *****.
@ sleepwalkers -- wrong, the 360's VGA connection goes to 1080p (1920 x 1080) - Sabin17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, can anyone confirm if it's the APRIL issue of the magazine?
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@juanotejano
this is a magazine scan that has to be "created" before it's published.. big difference. - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ ilyag
the 360 uses 2.5" mobile (laptop) hard drives. still not $200 for a 120 gb drive, but closer than what you're talking about - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Ok. I'll just keep hating them for treating all of their customers like criminals and idiots. Happy?"
And you buy hardware from no other than Microsoft to demonstrate your cool new web2.0-safe anti-conformist views, hey? You don't realise how much of a puppet you already are. - 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'll be grabbin up the low end model after this is released. I hope the current high end will get pushed to the low end module.
- lysernix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is great and all, but 2 gripes:
$479 is too much
120GB is too small.
That said I've been really looking forward to this and also hope that this is the 65nm process as well!! - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The title is odd. Can a validation still really be a rumor?
- CYR1X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3AAAAPPPPPRRRRRRIIIIIIIILLLLLLL FOOLS!!!!!
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Better Hardware? Care to elaborate?
- mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3it may be only $20 for the extra 100gigs, that sounds huge, but you have to pay for the hd-dvd addon dont you? not to mention xbox life will run you some extra money.
And for the record, don't include "great games" in your list of advantages to the $20 cheaper xbox, becuase the xbox doesnt come with any great games, if you want great games to be a part of the initial price, buy a wii, or hope to god playstation home is good (but i doubt it for some reason...)
give the ps3 a little time, trust me when dev costs go down and games are easier to make, and enough time has passed for devs to use the FULL power of the ps3 (which i believe will far surpass that of the xbox, but thats personal thats not guaranteed) and they will get some new exclusives and maybe get 1 or 2 back, and when the prices of all consoles are going down, then we'll see what happens. - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ eudaimo -- "consumers reasonably assume that any new functionality will be reasonably available to people who invest early."
"To put it simply: I would pay for an hdmi dongle for my current 360. If none is possible, then Microsoft should have said so when people asked repeatedly over the past year, instead of dodging the question, while we bought up "old" 360s."
The key word is "reasonable"... isn't it possible they were investigating adding HDMI, and simply found that it wasn't feasible? and how many companies do you think would have made an announcement about a better version to wait for, thus completely stalling sales of existing consoles? I choose to look at it as Microsoft giving gamers more options now (that were not available previously), but some of you seem to want to believe they're actively trying to cheat their paying customers. Give it a rest, they're just making business decisions.
Microsoft doesn't 'owe' us anything, we bought a console that didn't have HDMI and had a 20 GB hard drive. The PS3 was an available alternative, but didn't have what I was looking for. I've gotten a lot of entertainment out of my 360, and I'm going to buy the new console in April/May so I can enjoy 1080p on my particular television. I'm glad to have that option. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I haven't seen hard drive prices like that in half a decade. PC hard drives with twice the storage cost half as much.
- Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kissthering
I can respect that. My personal opinion (not that you asked for it) is thats a lot of cash to hide a few wires. You still will most likely have a nest :)
I do agree having to change from signal types is a pain in the ass (which is another reason I am staying with component....I have 7 items that use component) However this could be solved with a somewhat cheap (far cheaper than a new receiver) remote. set up some macro's and you are done.
But again this is just my opinion, and I do understand what you are saying. Also your answer is exactly what I was looking for from my first statement.(cause I honestly did want to know) - Flynnz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I really have to ask.....why do you want HDMI?
Not trying to be a dick or anything......just trying to understand. Cause I dont think there is a person on here that could tell the difference in quality between component, and HDMI. I mean I guess its cool to have less cables....but I dont know, doesnt seem like enough to make me want to run out and get a new switcher/receiver. Also when HDMI becomes standard, so does the DRM. So again...why do people want HDMI again? - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5What about those of us who already have an Xbox, I want HDMI too, any chance of a HDMI AV cable and/or adapter for the existing 360?
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Woo woo.. You mean $600, the 20GB versions of the PS3 have disappeared off the face of the earth.
- mr_bako2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@arunforce
i was thinking the same exact thing, it put a smile on my face at the hypocrisy of most of these people, the comments like yours (that make sense) get dugg down and the comments about sony sucking (that have been repeated countless times) get dugg up... microsoft releases a $500 console and everyone cheers as much as they can, because clearly the $50 dollar increase in hard drive space, and the new color (which apparantely is worth $100...) is enough to make everyone go insane. - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My TV can display 1080p, but not through the 360's component connections. HDMI will finally let me get the best picture out of my display. Lots of people with similar situations.
Selling a box with 1080p and HD DVD capabilities but no digital interface didn't make any sense, and now Microsoft is rectifying that. - username9000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it will. the current core with no hard drive will be cancelled.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After having a nintendo wii for a while, it still lacks "serious" games like gears of war. I would rather have a xbox 360 with an hd dvd add on, will make good use of that HDMI port ooooh yeah
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6This is the best news Sony could have hoped for.
