Rockstar Support Feels Terrible about GTA Lock-ups
kotaku.com — A very friendly, and obviously unhappy, fellow answered the Rockstar Support phones who, after thanking me for not yelling at him and apologizing profusely for the problem, spilled quite a bit of beans on the issue.

- LumpOfCole, on 04/29/2008, -4/+116Anyone else reminded of that old Gamespot article about the last "perfect" game (Ocarina of Time) having that freezing problem when looking up at Gohma? Wow I really am a nerd.
- funkytaco, on 04/29/2008, -1/+32Yes. Yes, you are. Welcome.
- Dr00pieS, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8I bow to you, oh mighty one.
- iunno666, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Strange, I never had that problem.
- ProfessorSYM, on 04/29/2008, -52/+10Aw, they feel "terrible" about it?
Of course the guy feels terrible about it...there are probably hundreds of calls stacking up, full of angry gamers who have no problem insulting and yelling at the Rockstar customer service rep they talk to. If he is unhappy, it is because he is the one who has to take those calls.- decyx, on 04/29/2008, -4/+6Way to overstate the obvious.
- forgiste, on 04/29/2008, -2/+18Gee, no ***** Columbo. Anyone would want to pull their hair out after hearing the same complaint being blasted through a megaphone over and over into their ear. Try working tech support for any company. The thing is, yelling is absolutely unneccesary and it doesn't help your problem get solved any faster. Unloading into a person just because they're not in the same room as you is immature, and only fills the person on the recieving end with stress. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the people taking these calls do actually feel personally guilty for having shipped out this long awaited game only to have lock-up issues.
- mem2, on 04/30/2008, -5/+1"I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the people taking these calls do actually feel personally guilty". You gamers have your heads up your arse, they dont do programming or testing - why should they feel guilty at all. Sit tight you whinging bitches while they patch it.
- Dr00pieS, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5IF I TYPE LIKE THIS, DOES IT GIVE IT THE SAME EFFECT!?!
- Zyphron, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Human beings are not always robotic rational beings. Often we have these things called "feelings" which do not always make sense.
I think the point made by the article is that the support rep actually seemed genuinely sorry. Having overseen some helpdesks, I could see this feeling coming from either a personal association with the successes or failures of the company as a whole, or due to a person feeling bad anytime they cannot fix something for their customer. (even if it is not their fault they cannot fix it)
- saxreturns, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Either that or he bought it and is having the same problem!
- richmomz, on 04/29/2008, -13/+49Bummer. Not everyone is having problems though. Works fine on my X360.
- Repeater2000, on 04/29/2008, -32/+15From the looks of things you made the smart choice. Kotaku is being very kind in this report. All accounts of this issue point HEAVILY towards the PS3 version.

cant comment on 360 version because my 360 is red ringed toast...- hevnsnt, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Please give this a try: http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/263/1/
- Incomp3tnt, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Yeah! Mine too! Worst ***** ever, queued up for an hour for the game (got one of the last ten copies, thank god), then got home to find my 360 had red ringed on me. I almost cried. Okay, I did cry. Everyone cries once in a while.
Thankfully though, as my 360 was pre-owned and the Microsoft Warranty expired before I bought it, Gamestation are going to swap it for a brand new one. Can't fault them on making their customers happy.

What "accounts" do you speak of? - Zyphron, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1In fairness, several people posting anecdotally here does not really prove or disprove his point.
However, if the same crash is happening (at all) on both systems, it is probably a bug in the game code, not related to a specific piece of hardware. Unfortunately, games have bugs. It sucks, but it happens.
- Oronar, on 04/29/2008, -8/+23My PS3 version works fine. :)
- SSUK, on 04/29/2008, -3/+7Bully on the 360 also had lock up problems which only affected older Xbox 360 systems. If these same systems are freezing here someone at Q&A is going to be in hot water tomorrow...
- BugMeNot2, on 04/30/2008, -3/+3Actually, the Bully problems affected all Xbox 360s.
- fredkreuger, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Not mine.
- BugMeNot2, on 04/30/2008, -2/+7Wait, let me rephrase that.
The Bully problems were not exclusive to older Xbox 360 systems. They affected all Xbox 360 models.
- richmomz, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Didn't have problems with Bully either.
- sleepwalkers, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2More like HOT COFFEE! Amirite?

- chromerium, on 04/29/2008, -4/+8I had a lockup on my 360, during a mission. I thought it was my console overheating and reset it...
- darthsnoopy, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7Nah. It's not overheating..the intro lockup happened to me pretty much right off. The second lockup happened within an hour into the game. The thing is..alot of reports are there about the 'intro' issue. But my second lockup worries me more..i was just driving around and it froze...no chance to save or anything. I'm hoping tonight when i reload the autosave system helps me out, i'd hate to have to replay the start of the game again (not that it wasn't great, but i want to go further..not back).
My 360 is a relatively new (within a year mfg) elite- chromerium, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2I bought mine just before new years. Its a Halo special edition, so, its a 20gb Elite, basically. In green.
Mine hasn't had any real crashes or problems in other games so I'm thinking its GTA4 specific. Only the one lockup so far, not the intro, just a mission where you're driving around in a police car - not going to spoil it - but after doing one of the things you are supposed to do, Niko just stood there looking at the guy like a muppet, with the sound playing, everything was fine, I just couldn't move or do anything.
I guess they'll probably release a patch, once they figure it out.

- RickS2, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1I'm on the 360 and had no freeze during the intro...but it did freeze during a mission about an hour in. I don't know if it's my ***** 360 or the game.
- CDRaff, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Mine froze once too, It was just after a cut scene, one of the Vlad missions just had to reset the Xbox and walk across the street, other than that no issues at all. That is other than playing douche bags on live.
- Evi1d33d, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Try removing the HDD, maybe it's a caching problem.

- arkive, on 04/30/2008, -2/+2I've played around 10 hours and had three lockups on my 20gb HDMI 360. All three times were while driving. I haven't had any other games lock up this particular 360 since I've had it (this being my 3rd 360 console).

- mirunit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Runs smooth on my 360 also. I have one of the older 360 Premiums (early 2006).
- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3I am relieved (so far) that my 360 as not had a hitch with GTA4.. I think this 3rd refurb might actually last.. I remember having issues with certain games with my first console (release console) for like Dead rising etc.. which made it unplayable caus it would freeze before i had time to do stuff and save.. etc.. GTA4 had me worried a bit.
With this most new machine (not actually new.. early 2006 refurb), Dead Rising hasn't frozen ever.. and I was expecting GTA4 to make it work overtime but no problem whatsoever.. let's just hope it lasts!
One problem i had (no really a problem with the game) was that Xbox live disconnected me. So i tried to "Connect to XBL" through the guide.. was tired of waiting so i pressed guide to remove the Guide but it wasn't connected yet.. so then it logged me off, and since i wasn't in an active profile anymore.. the game went back to the main screen...
Tip: If Xbox live disconnects.. make sure to wait til it connects (or times out) before removing the guide.. so that you don't lose any unsaved game progress. - richmomz, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3My 360 is an early '06 also - must have been a good batch then or something. Apart from a few lockups in Oblivion I've never had a problem.
- mirunit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Very nice, glad to hear some feedback from other early 06 owners. I also had a few oblivion lockups but I think that was due to heat (no red rings).

- captmorgan555, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1My 60gig PS3 is fine, although i have had 2 lockups at random times. Once in an ambulance on the beach (don't ask) and once while quitting the game... odd this problem is for sure.
- spankaccount, on 05/01/2008, -1/+1My 360 has locked up twice with the game now, but I can live with it.

- imakeholesinu, on 04/29/2008, -2/+173Kudos to that tech. Poor guy has to have asshat after asshat call him names when it wasn't his fault. Goes to show how many little kids (or adults who act like little kids) bought the game.
Can't wait for the lawsuits threads in the forums.- timisondigglol, on 04/29/2008, -1/+27On the flip side of things...at least we know Rockstar isn't exporting their customer service to India.
- daizaru, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Yeah, nothing like dropping $60 and encountering a glitch that shoulda been found through playtesting.
It sucks being a tech and I'm glad the nice guy routine is helping people sympathize, but his job is to answer the phone and deal with asshats and unfortunately they should expect it. People have a right to be mad.
I've done tech support in my day, and the nice guy routine is the best for getting people off your case. I'm sure they are working on the bug but it still really sucks if you paid the money, especially lined up on a monday night only to get an unplayable game. People will invariably be angry. I didn't phone in, I returned mine as defective. I'll rent it when it gets fixed, if it's really really good I'll buy it again- DivisibleByZero, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3"should have been found through playtesting". I just remembered an article on here a while back detailing the miserable life of a video game tester, and I have to say testing for this would be a bitch. From what I gather, the bug only happens during the intro cut scene. That means some room full of underpaid saps would have to sit there watching the same cut scenes over and over all day. And should they do this with every cut scene in the game?
Making them play the game is a reasonable expectation, but telling them not to just go ahead and skip through the cut scenes on their 4th or 5th time playing a game...that's just cruel.- daizaru, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1The problem presents itself most commonly in 60Gb versions of the PS3. Everyone has to start the game, had they tested the hardware properly using different versions of the system it probably would have presented itself. There is a difference between a bug that surfaces mid game and one that appears in the intro and is thus unplayable.
Your right though, play testing is not glamorous. That's the job though, it's not their fault that a bunch of kiddies think they can get a job playing video games all day and not have to do exhaustive testing. It's funny how certain jobs elicit sympathy for their difficulty even though that's the job where other people feel no sympathy for people in other jobs that are difficult. I'm no game tester but I have a lot of experience in Quality Assurance... I'd assume the first thing you'd do is try it on the various versions of the system and see if it's even playable... in this instance it is not. So one of two things can be assumed by this:
They didn't play test it at all OR they were aware of the problem and shipped anyways. Either of the two are infuriating when you get stuck with a defunct game. Stop making excuses for Rockstar... who needs PR reps when fans so blithely defend a company despite bungles like these.- DivisibleByZero, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1"see if it's even playable... in this instance it is not"
It is if you skip the cut scene and actually start *playing* the game, right? My point is just that they probably focused more on the gameplay than the cutscenes. I don't have much experience in the games business, but I'd assume a cut scene would be less likely to suffer a catastrophic bug.
That said, I played for like 6 hours straight last night (the ladies love me...) and did see some bugs during the normal gameplay. One mission where I was supposed to follow a guy, I ended up going the wrong way and getting totally lost. But when he reached his destination the game happily popped me right into the cutscene and there I was on the other side of town. I kind of expected it to say the guy got away and fail the mission like every other GTA game? - Phoenixito, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0"I'd assume the first thing you'd do is try it on the various versions of the system and see if it's even playable... in this instance it is not. Or you could assume that they did play-test it on the 60GB PS3, and the X360 (both of which have been having problems) and didn't have a problem. The article does say only SOME of the consoles are having problems, and no-one has any idea how many machines are hit.
Frankly I think both of your alternate conclusions just don't hold water - if they had major problems they'd get raped and that would be the end of the GTA franchise, not something I think Rockstar would want!

- sleepwalkers, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2How 'bout this, people don't be asshats to the tech support guy and maybe he'll be more inclined to help. If you simply use that sympathy to get people off your back and don't bother helping people, you're just a dick
That's how it goes for me. If you come into a store I work at and are an ***** to me, I'm not going to help you. If you're at least not an *****, however, I'll do whatever I can to help you get whatever you need. - Nitrodist88, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3"shoulda been found through playtesting. "
I disagree. Trying to find every single error through a "trial and error" method will not yield you a perfect solution, especially with the complexities of modern games/software. It's just unreasonable to have a completely bug free game.
Now, Enter The Matrix on the other hand...

- clak, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5You'll have to wait for the PC version and play it either using CodeWeaver's Crossover Games or Boot Camp.
- Mashedup14, on 04/29/2008, -0/+24Apparently, if you buy the PS3 version, flip it upside down, and burn what your drive reads onto another disk, it will play on a Mac and you actually get extra Mac-only missions too.
- Dr00pieS, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4I'm so disappointed in you for saying that. LoL
- pnmoore, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5If it was on a Mac it wouldn't freeze, right?
/sarcasm - digidevil, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2San Andreas (and earlier ones) is available for mac and works great (I've played all the way thru it on my imac with no problems). I'd imagine this one will become available too but you'll need some fairly serious hardware (ie I don't think the built in graphics card for iMacs, except maybe the most recent ones, would be able to handle it very well). Better to get a pc for gaming.
- mark076h, on 04/29/2008, -4/+60how do they not find problems like this in QA testing?
- imacbook, on 04/29/2008, -6/+20The list of people who tested GTA IV is longer than any I've ever seen before. Check your manual.
- decyx, on 04/29/2008, -3/+47That doesn't really answer the question. If anything, it only makes this more surprising.
- Aadain, on 04/29/2008, -0/+15Hence why their techs are stumped. If they could find the specific configuration/setup that is causing the problem and replicate it, they would probably already know what is causing it and have a fix in development. Since the article is saying their techs don't know what's causing it, more than likely it's one of those extremely hard to replicate bugs, the kind the you can almost never fix, because the moon and stars have to be in just the right alignment to see the problem.
- KaiUno, on 04/29/2008, -11/+5Ehm... There aren't that many setups out there, you know. It's either on the xbox or the ps3. With or without a harddisk. That's about it when it comes to configurations, unless you want to add possible resolutions to that and perhaps sound output. Still, not an awful lot of different configurations, if you ask me.
- JohnFlux, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9KaiUno, then it's a good thing they're not asking you :P
For a start there's going to be different firmware revisions. Then there are all the slight revisions that go on in the console. Then there's the fact that occasionally you can get a batch of bad chips etc. - KaiUno, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3JohnFlux, still it's not like there's the same number of permutations like there are with the pc, now is there.
- Aadain, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1And yet the bug slipped through. I'm just happy my PS3 doesn't have any problems playing the game :)
- Nitrodist88, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1KaiUno, what the ***** does the PC have to do with a PS3?
JohnFlux, still, it's not like there's the same number of permutations like there are with *insert unrelated object here*, now is there. - Holle, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Nitro, he's saying that there is only a limited number of config's on the console compared to an infinite number on the PC.
- Aadain, on 04/29/2008, -0/+15Hence why their techs are stumped. - Radan, on 04/29/2008, -1/+7Note before reading this that I really, really like this game and a few bugs are not going to change this fact.
Though, what I seriously don't understand is that after all this testing, how the game could turn out so incredibly buggy. NPCs getting stuck in odd places, characters getting stuck in cars and other object resulting in them glitching out and gets catapulted two hundred meters in the air, and NPCs panicking and throwing themselves from the pavement onto the road (and of course getting crushed repeatedly by the traffic), simply because I drove at 30 km/h at yellow light.
I've even had to reload the entire game two times because of bugs. The first time, I got into a knife fight and just when the last enemy died he rolled a little down the hill which made me get stuck in a infinite loop of the "knifing the dead body" animation.
The second time a cutscene simply disappeared and I got sent back into the game, though without the ability to move, attack or do anything at all for that matter.
Compared to this, Rainbow Six: Vegas seems bug-free, but I guess that is simply something one has to take when dealing with a game as large and detailed as GTA IV.- cronot, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2"and NPCs panicking and throwing themselves from the pavement onto the road (and of course getting crushed repeatedly by the traffic), simply because I drove at 30 km/h at yellow light."
I remember that this happened on previous GTA games too, as far back as GTA III. I guess this is more an engine "feature" that was carried over to the new version. - BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Have you been playing for a while? I have maybe 8-10 hours in haven't noticed most of those issues.. I have seen a taxi cab getting annoyed at the car in front of him at the Pay toll.. trying to go around him on the curb, hitting the booth and getting stuck there.. But the car behind him was in his ass, so he couldn't reverse either..

- TR41NWR3CK, on 04/29/2008, -11/+1I'm pretty sure you mean research & development.
- carpespasm, on 04/29/2008, -1/+9no, quality assurance would be where unusual lockups would usually be debugged.
- funkyloki, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8No, I think he actually meant QA, which means Quality Assurance, and is a part of the corporation that is supposed to verify EVERY situation in which the game could conceivably be used. The research and development side had their hand in creating it, the QA side has their hand in testing it, and since this seems to affect (majority-wise) one type of PS3 console (FTA), it would seem that QA only tested it on one type of PS3 console.
- ZeNiTH456, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4The problem is it's impossible to test EVERY situation. With all the development revisions of a game you can't test everything over again when you get an updated revision. I'm in QA myself and we typically find 95% of the issues in-house. Sometimes the developers decide it's not big enough of a problem and will release the game anyway. Our games go through a third-party QA company which usually finds another 4% of the issues in our games.
It sounds like the issue with GTA lockup should have been caught though. My guess is they didn't have enough revisions of the consoles to test it thoroughly enough. - TR41NWR3CK, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Jeez I completely spaced that one. I was thinking he said Questions and Answers testing or something. I humbly stand corrected.
- flipmeat, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Sometimes they do, but it is tricky to reproduce it exactly. Bugs must be repeatable before a coder can fix them. If the Xboxes are overheating while pushing all those graphics around, that's not a bug, it's a hardware problem.
- Matt2k, on 04/29/2008, -0/+29Consoles no longer come with a standard hardware set for the duration of their lifetime. We get all these asinine "versions" with subtle revisions.
Clue to Microsoft and Sony: Look, we buy consoles, and developers develop for consoles, so we don't have to deal with ***** like this. Keep your versions of hard drive sizes, with/without various onboard chips, and hardware revisions to a minimum.- gothicform, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7People say PC Gaming is dead, clearly Xboxes and PS3s are just consoles morphing into PCs complete with the same sort of hardware problems PCs have - overheated graphics cards for one.
- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Agreed, we don't want to have to find a "compatible" version of a console to play games.. I understand fixing bugs and making revision to the hardware.. but it should not caus more problems..
- Nitrodist88, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4So, you want a 360 *with* the ~33% failure rate?
- Zyphron, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3No, I want a fully working console to begin with. One of the major criticisms leveled against PC gaming is that it is too complicated. Now, while I am happy to let all the morons who cannot understand PC Gaming go to their consoles, it is annoying to deal with them on my 360 where I don't get the advantages of top of the line hardware and my control mechanisms of choice.
If consoles lose their advantage of simplicity and lack of bugs (just as they are losing their - "no install" advantage) then why not just play on a PC?
- gothicform, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7People say PC Gaming is dead, clearly Xboxes and PS3s are just consoles morphing into PCs complete with the same sort of hardware problems PCs have - overheated graphics cards for one.

- KaiUno, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I'm sitting on a couch right now. You realise some folks use a pc on a couch right? There's no rule stating you have to be in an uncomfortable chair to play on your pc. My PC and my consoles are hooked up to the same screen by the way.
- Twisty, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah I have San Andreas on the PC actually... I didn't have to money at the time for a console. But it is still good on the PC as well.

look i love rockstar and GTA, but, it's not good. not good for gamers, for the company, for the PR, or anything else. It's a huge game. I got the 60 gig PS3 and it has frozen twice. Stop crying bitches, it's game of the century. The freezing problem you're suffering is simply the console's shock at the awesomeness resting inside it. It's sort of like ***** a supermodel for the first time and cumming in 10 seconds. Give it time. You'll get used to it.- theboozer, on 04/29/2008, -3/+15I concur.
- TheGreatBelow, on 04/29/2008, -0/+22Turns out that this is the exact problem. Rockstar is going to release a patch tommorow, see IGN news story.

- ivantalboys, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Its not about how to get the patch so much as how to apply it. Of course the PS3 version has a hard drive install so you can expect the patch to go in there. But what about the 360? Yes most owners probably have a hard drive but there is no game install so the patch would have to be stored as a special save game. In which case the game has been coded to search for patches after boot time, which it probably does when it searches for DLC.
- rdoger6424, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1do you own a 360 by chance?
- Tayls, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Wow, good for them. As disappointing as this is for people, I'm glad to see they're fixing it as soon as they possibly can. Kudos, Rockstar.

- voyvf, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2The difference with software is that it can be patched.
Moreover, the tech support handling the incoming calls for Rockstar probably had nothing to do with the glitch. They also probably don't make that much, or have any say over the situation, so all one is accomplishing when yelling at them is proving that you're a complete and total *****. If you really *must* bitch, ask for a supervisor. At worst, they're probably paid enough to listen to your whining. At best, they'll close enough to the source to possibly have some idea as to WTF is wrong, and how soon it'll be corrected. I wouldn't bet hard cash on the latter, however.- crossmr, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Stop making excuses for them. Its not like its their first game. Is it okay that your honda explodes 10% of the time its started because they're going to release a firmware upgrade for it? No.
A piece of software is no different than any other purchase and should work and be complete out of the box. You get a blender and its missing the blade, is it okay because they can mail you some new blades in 6-8 weeks? its coming right? No.
They have your money, you don't have a working product.
That attitude is everything that is wrong with the consumer base right now. - daizaru, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Hardware can be replaced, sometimes in the same day. I could get six different copies of the game and it probably wouldn't work, a patch with no known fix could be weeks from getting a patch. I'd have to agree, with crossmr... people need to stop making excuses for them just because it's rockstar. This should have been solved with play testing and people have a right to be upset.
- sleepwalkers, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1That's the theory for some PC developers that pissed so many people off: Just patch it later.
Now, that's no reason to berate some tech support guy who's been shoved in front of a phone and told to take care of it, but Rockstar ***** up, period.

My console started to freeze up about 3 weeks ago (again, this is my 3rd that MS has fixed). I didnt ***** around and sent it in right away so I would have it back in time for GTA.
It wouldnt shock me if all the 360 problems are just consoles that are getting ready to die, and have nothing to do with the game itself.

- Aurabolt, on 04/29/2008, -0/+30I'm glad to hear a POSITIVE tech support story.
Thank you Rockstar dude. There needs to be more of you out there.- jparkinson, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9Honestly, most customer service people are exactly like this dude... the only real problems arise when ***** morons call in and yell at them. I really have never understood how people can make the assumption that a customer support person had ANYTHING to do with the creation of the game/product that you're yelling about, you'd seriously have to have never had a real job in your entire life to believe that.
- JointVenture, on 04/29/2008, -19/+5PS3 FTL.
Can it get any worse for the delaystation?
Just kidding, it sucks if you have a bad batch, a console is just a means to play a game and I feel bad for anyone who gets home and finds they have a dud.- TR41NWR3CK, on 04/29/2008, -3/+8Well my freezebox 360 gave me the beloved RROD over the weekend, so there is no way in hell I am purchasing gta4 for the xbox, or any other games for that matter. Hopefully this time it won't take a month for my xbox to go through the repair center. I'm still waiting for microsoft to send me the shipping box...
- JointVenture, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1You should have paid the 50 bucks for a replacement plan.
Got the 2 year, and Ive taken one back because it failed, and one back because I wanted the new version with HDMI, and I plan on getting a new one a month before my warranty runs out next FEB.- TR41NWR3CK, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Or how about microsoft fixes their product so that it doesn't fail sooooo much.
BTW I did purchase an extended warranty from the video game store i bought it from, problem is their warranty does not kick in till microsoft's warranty is through. So I have to wait 2 1/2 years before they'll swap out my xbox in-store.
I own all three consoles, each is good in its own way, and each blows hard in its own way. From my experience the PS3 sucks the least, but experiences vary from person to person.

- Repeater2000, on 04/29/2008, -8/+78The NeoGAF thread is hilarious, 90% of the lockups are on PS3's from the looks of things.
WHAT IS KNOWN SO FAR
- Affects mostly 60gb units, but not consistent if it's a launch system or not
- Freezes during cinematic scene but audio still continues a bit before completely locked up
- Trying the same disc on another model often results in it working
- Deleting your install does not fix the problem
- Deleting both install and save file does not fix the problem
- Hard powering off your system does not fix the problem
- Not using Dual Shock 3 does not fix the problem
- Not exclusive to one chain of stores- spectecjr, on 04/29/2008, -1/+24The audio continuing just means that it still has audio in the buffer to spew out before it dies entirely; the main game thread has probably locked in some fashion.
- skoles, on 04/29/2008, -0/+8I have a 60Gb PS3 I bought in November of '07. Game installed fine but did have some moments where it seemingly did nothing (but play music). I let it do its thing and it continued like normal for the next 2hrs I played it.
- selfdisplaced, on 04/29/2008, -17/+2wow- so umm...where are you getting that 90% of lockups are on PS3, there is no facts to back that up. dugg you down for spouting BS
- Repeater2000, on 04/29/2008, -1/+8http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28835 ...
Read up on it my friend.- selfdisplaced, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1and how does this prove a 90%? It doesn't this looks like a forum, of a select group of people. Mostly people who submit to NeoGaf forums? I doubt 100% of GTAIV owners goto that site.

- dondara, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3On the PS3's forums, people are suggesting that the network interface is the cause. Not just logging out but pulling the eth/shutting down the wifi has cured it for some. My copy arrives Friday, please oh please let this crap solved by then. Wow, I bet Sony is screaming at RS.
- Tayls, on 04/30/2008, -3/+24So, I guess the 360 v. PS3 comparisons just got a little more interesting.
- nerdherder, on 04/30/2008, -5/+6Don't blame the consoles specifically. Games are made to work on the consoles, its a game development problem. Its not like all PS3 games do this.
- Vhaeos, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4I (think) he meant the comparisons between the 360 & PS3 versions of GTAIV. In which case this is a legitimate point if they don't fix it soon. But hopefully they'll fix it soon.
- FFXIfrohike, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1To be fair, my 360 locked up during a mission (music played, but screen froze). Hasn't happened since. Some of the lockups aren't hardware specific.

- magicaltrevor, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Well that narrows it down a lot...
- mike17032, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I would bet the 360 lock ups are just consoles that are getting ready to die. I am sure a lot of people are firing up older 360s for the first time in a while to play this game. That they have the PS3 narrowed down and not the 360 is kind of telling.
- ClarkNoHeart, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Mine's working great so far. Hope I don't encounter any problems (or that it is fixed by the time I do).
- pigducksheep, on 04/29/2008, -8/+2GTA IV's violence is freezing consoles?
- forsakn1, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7I wish all customer service people were that nice. Even though he was probably yelled at repeatedly by complete strangers, he still treated the caller respectfully and with empathy. If they had a Customer Service award for "Best Attitude While Being Berated." he would win it hands down.
I also hope that this doesn't happen to him. - discoe2monster, on 04/29/2008, -3/+41% of them crash, I think but I'm no doctor.
- TR41NWR3CK, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2660gb ps3 owner right here, after about 5 hours of gameplay I experienced a freeze. Its the same type of freeze I encountered a few times in Assassin's Creed. A ps3 patch was released for Assassin's Creed that fixed the problem.. no lockups since. So I am not too concerned with gta4 freeze-ups, in a week there should be a patch available.
- mordea, on 04/29/2008, -4/+3Having worked in both customer service and technical support, I know that most employers prefer you to be kind to the customer even if it's a complete lie. The person in question may have genuinely felt bad for the people having this issue, but he could just as likely not cared and followed a paraphrased script or set of lines for the callers. Who wouldn't feel better if the company they're calling is nice, caring, and wants the customer know how much they're appreciated?
- davidkeithjones, on 04/29/2008, -0/+9Multiple console SKU's almost guarantee that more of these issues will come up in the future.
- bwdd, on 04/29/2008, -0/+12That guy was so sincere I don't even care that there is a problem.
- ciaran036, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3what issue? How come the reviewers never had this problem? Funny that...
- davidkeithjones, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Reviewers probably had a different build.
- ciaran036, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Very few of them porbably. They only received the game very recently.
- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Also depends on which console they played it.. some used the same review for both

- RBrenner14, on 04/29/2008, -9/+14Here's the punch line: even when hyped games don't work, they're still praised. "GTA4 doesn't even work in my console, but OMG THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT REPS WERE SO NICE... GTA4 IS GOD!!!" I'm not anti-GTA4 or anything (prob gonna get it myself); just pointing out a disturbing trend.
- dezman2003, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4How exactly is it a disturbing trend? Willingness to accept that everything isn't perfect all the time and deal with it like a rational human being disturbs you?
- RBrenner14, on 04/30/2008, -4/+5You entirely missed the point of my comment. The disturbing trend is that the hype surrounding this game (and others like it) is so powerful that even when the game doesn't work people can still find a way to praise it. If any other normal game shipped like this - essentially broken - it would be facing some serious flak. But since this is GTA4, people can find a way to turn this really negative aspect of the game into something positive.
- dezman2003, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I still don't understand why you consider it a disturbing trend. People like rockstar and they usually make a quality product so it isn't surprising or disturbing that people are willing to accept a temporary flaw.

- paulmer2003, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1It's still exactly as good of a game considering it's such an isolated issue.
- Snakedal337, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3I assume it's because unlike your average, run of the mill game, this one is...how could I describe it... ***** AWESOME. When it works. Hence i'll cut it some slack for being NEARLY unplayable until a patch is released. While i am disappointed, and it's frustrating, ***** happens, and it is in fact, still a great game. The Lockups don't change the quality of game play (Considering most of it is occurring during cinematic sequences), nor the story.

- h4k0r, on 04/29/2008, -2/+5WTF.....how does it scatch the disc.....
- dezman2003, on 04/29/2008, -0/+19When games crash the xbox it goes into a fit of uncontrollable rage. Microsoft designed it in this way to encourage game developers to release a game only when it's been properly bug tested.
- grovest4life, on 04/29/2008, -1/+12Its a 360 quite a common problem.

My xbox red-ringed during the opening of Call of Duty 4 the first time I played it, and I have never been so frustrated in my life. my xbox red-ringed on guitar hero 3. (really).
moved it to an upright position away from everything with a fan behind it and it worked fine afterwards.

- ericrous, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1To true. Most annoying for me was during a cut scene in KOTOR. It glitched the whole game and forced me to replay a whole level.
- chrislongridge, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2My game has frozen twice so far, the first time it lasted 30 or so seconds and the second time it stayed frozen until i restarted. Ive played just under 10 hours so it isn't a big deal for me. The game is still awesome.
- dezman2003, on 04/29/2008, -0/+7Nobody cares unless you tell us what console you are using.
- cesclaveria, on 04/29/2008, -5/+24I guess I'll just have to keep playing Mario Kart :)

- slym2k, on 04/29/2008, -0/+14My roomates 360 got a 'dirty cd' error last night. He restarted the console and it was fine. His xbox sounds like a jet engine though. Is that normal?

- RyeBrye, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1That is actually a feature...
- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1That's because you are pressing the slow-mo button without knowing it..
Also i don't think the cinematic camera is best used in a high speed chase.. its just too unpredictable sometimes..
