- Courthold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you check the whole post by Rockstar:
Rockstar Games has ceased manufacturing of the current version of the title and will begin working on a version of the game with enhanced security to prevent the "hot coffee" modifications. This version will retain the original ESRB M-rating and is expected to be available during the Company's fourth fiscal quarter. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys, I'm pretty sure Rockstar decided to fix this themselves.
They could keep selling it as an AO title, but they decided it'd be wise to work it back down to M.
Believe me, I hate Hilary as much as the next person, but she didn't force them to do this.
Also, why is everyone in such a tizzy about this. The M version will be EXACTLY the same as the one out. Not one god damned thing will be different unless you count the hot coffee mod as part of the game. This isn't like when they removed the car-shaking hookers from the first GTA 3. It will be impossible to tell the difference between versions unless you apply that hot coffee patch. - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, now that it has an AO rating, it'll probably actually sell MORE copies?
- drowningfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The way it should be handled. Let the Industry correct itself. But I'm sure the demagogues out there won't end their 20 year old crusade anytime soon. It's a lot easier to deal with when compared with actually having to address the more pressing issues in the U.S. at the moment. I guess it's all "...for the kids." eh?
- Smarterdanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WHY do they keep saying this is all do to a modification you have to download. IT IS ON THE DVD. The hot coffee mod just changes a bit of code and uses what they took out. YOU CAN GET IT ON THE PS2 VERSION BY PUTING IN THE RIGHT CODES AT THE RIGHT TIMES. Them changing the rating on ALL platforms is clearly becuase of this and they won't admit it.
- matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great! Now how much harder will it be for groups to shut down other games. Soon we'll only be able to play tetris - but some watered down version with only the Z shaped pieces.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn, why did I sell mine just a month ago! ebay, anyone?
- nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Bruce Cambell's quote on censorship: "You can shoot a boobie but you can't kiss one."
- ThePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the mini game was not supposed to be playable in the first place and is only accessible by an "unauthorized third party modification," therefore, violating the end user license agreement, why should Rockstar be under so much pressure? It's only going to help the sales of the next GTA or R* title.
- pixelpuncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great way to sell off their remaining stock. Can't wait for the newly design cover with the A-O rating, when the game becomes a greatest hits title for 19.99.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh please...don't bring politics into it....it's the parents of the kids who are playing it!
- ShadySpace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a major loss on our part (meaning the actual gamers), it shows (which Gamespot has been saying for awhile now in their Freeplay feature) that the ESA/ESRB are a bunch of incompetent fools who will let the entire industry be demonized and controlled before (God forbid) putting up a fight or simply using logic such as "The vast majority of gamers are intelligent adults, this isn't a child's medium any more", these ***** politicians are treating it the situation like we're back in the the 80's. The game was rated M for ***** MATURE, in goddamn God of War, you ***** two topless girls, there is no nudity in this "mod" and as Greg Kasavin said, if this was a feature from the fore-front it still would have been rated "M". This content does not justify an "AO" rating and it just goes on to show that the people who are supposed to be protecting the industry and consumers from government regulation (ESA) are doing a horribly ***** job and this will have much more far-reaching repurcussions.
- MegaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh now this just make sense. There is a mini-game located in a game that was disabled before it was officially released. Eventually somebody finds it and unlocks it via an third party modification and now people are calling out for blood, but not the blood of the people who made the hack but the people who made the game itself and purposely disabled the hack.
Geeze you just have to love the logic here. You know what, I think I'm going to create a little hack (puncture the battery) that causes rechargeable batteries to explode and then sue the manufacture of the said batteries for burning me even though I was doing something that the device wasn't meant to do.
Just think of all the pointless law suits we can start now!
I apologize for the ranting but things like this really get me mad. Parents should be seeing what their kids are playing and decide if it is appropriate for their kids. I doubt a watchful parent would allow a younger child to play Grand Theft Auto if they actually paid attention to what was in it (drugs, sex, and violence).
And you would think that big "M" on the front of the box with the little words "17+" under it would be a good indicator that this game is for adults.
My final rant here is why are parents in this country so overly offended by sex? It's a perfectly natural thing which can easily be viewed on cable television during the late night and found pretty much anywhere else to boot. Chances are any kid that is above the sixth grade (and most likely younger) know what sex is and has seen pornography before. - steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My favorite part is that in GTASA you take a chainsaw and saw off someone's head and blood spurts all over the street and screen, then you jam it straight into their twitching corpse and no one says anything, but god forbid you see a woman's breasts. Those are disgusting and should be hidden from anyone under the age of 18. A woman's body is an ugly disgusting thing that should be covered up.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dang Rockstar.
So what does the future hold now?
Only adult rated games? - fogrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe if parents just paid attention to what they were buying their children, instead of drinking beer and watching Nascar, we wouldn't have this problem.
- bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dont ***** believe it, they actually cracked.
and kids are much more mature than you think, and can distinguish between reality and fantasy.
i know this, i am one, and dont know ANY KID that would be influenced by anyway by GTA: San Andreas. get it through your ***** heads senators and preachers (ie amigaice). - NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe, their stock is up...
- Koldark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG!!! I can understand the business reason, but still, they should have fought harder.
- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, and you can still download it through bittorrent
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just stupid. Why should a company be blamed for parent's stupidity?
- Koldark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gotta version to sell? Prices will be sky-rocketing on eBay soon!
- ColdChilli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was probably the best thing for Rockstar, the XBox version has been out for aout 2 months and sales are on its downswing. No new sales cycle until Xbox360 or X-Mas comes out.
Way to go Hillary, this would have died a quick death if you didn't open your big mouth. Didn't you learn anything from Tipper and the PMRC? - Paiway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh noes, boobies! Avert your eyes, poor 17-year-olds!
- rishdeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that the fact that the "mod" was on the PS2 version of the game proved that it wasn't actually a mod and that the developers put it in there themselves. Isn't that why they are getting bollocked for it now?
- Cheirdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be stopping by Best Buy on the way home and getting the PC version now. I hate people like Lieberman and Clinton. They don't give two ***** about protecting anyone. They are just using this issue like the republicans use the "We hate gays!" platform.
- weirdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and btw, whats the big deal?
there will be a few games with the AO label for a while, whoopde-freakin-do. just wait a month and get the new one if your mommy's and daddy's won't let you get an AO game.
for all of you saying that the M rated sex-filled game will be worth a bit more money, you're wrong. its going to be the AO games which will be worth the most. - WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They lied about it being in the original code on the disc. Now they are standing up to it.
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahhh this is insane.. it was a mod/hack!! not a standard feature!!!
- weirdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this has been blown way out of proportion.
lets say a childs game has the word "*****" in the code of the game somewhere, but it is not seen in the game itself, should that game get a teen or mature rating because of that? no.
this is the same thing - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES! I just bought my copy two days ago. TWO DAYS! WHEEEE.
- RavenWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seek the definition of attrition, for that is what this is a war of. Cant have hero's anymore, Bush probably ordered the death of Neo. I digress... If I understand what I have read about how this all started, I suggest someone sue the mother who bought the game for her underage child! Next, Can you say - Yet another WhiteWood scandal (WhiteHouse & Hollywood - same diff) for Rockstar sales, and the Clinton/Bush Machiavelian Two Ways to Control a Population - Fear or Hope Campaign. Opps, did my fingers do that?
Six Million years of evolution and this is what I wake up to today?
Have they caught Osama YET?!!?
Braveheart their Asses. Grow Up. Fight You Cowards, Think back to how hard your ancestors fought. Take this issue as a last straw. There are more of you. They are a weaker animal that is growling loud to intimidate, put them in their place like a good little Master or spend the rest of your existence as a sentient and vibrant soul as a ***** Slave to a rOIL Family. Enjoy. - ultraelite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seriously no biggie they will sell an unmodable game soon and the game that are out are now ao a year difference whopptie ***** dew. I hate joe and hillary as much as I hate bush and cheney. Rockstar is making bank off of this game reminds me of postal 2 the only reason I ever thought twice about that game was the news
- Scuba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fiar enough, Rockstar should never have put it there in the first place...
- nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it should have had an AO rating the whole time. I'm 22 but it's a little disturbing to wait in line to buy it the night it goes on sale and see moms waiting in line with their 10 year old sons to buy the game. GET A CLUE MOM!!
The only difference between M and AO is:
Mature tiles have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.
Adults Only titles have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.
Most of the time I'm playing I'm being violent for prolonged periods of time. M games you have to be 17 and AO games you have to be 18? One year difference. Sheesh. - cal0001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ass soon as you stop making it people will copy it faster
- ShadySpace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You're wrong, Amigaice, very wrong. This (http://www.gamespot.com/features/freeplay/index.html?q=1&push=0) editorial proves my point to a very good extent.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The biggest reason to avoid ever having a game be rated _AO_ is that I'm pretty certain Walmart won't carry it. Whoops, there goes a huge chunk of sales.
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You don't have to "mod the game." Do some research. Editing variables in memory is a far, far cry from "mod(ing) the game." If the variables edited are achievable limits within the game (quite likely), then you don't even have to use a memory editor (which, by the way, isn't any sort of "mod"). Now I'm tempted to go through and do it just to get people to stop claiming it's a "mod" because they're ignorant of how memory works.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I truly don't understand this one.
Let me get this correct; it's OK to shoot cops in cold blood, rob and mame innocent people, gang-bang. But it's totally over the line to get a BJ or have sex with a girl?
Bill Clinton did it and remained as our president.
Call you senator or congress spokesperson and tell them how you feel. - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find it hilarious that people still think this is a "mod." Anyone that actually believes that "malicious hackers" could or would even bother to disassembler the executable and add a seamless mini-game are in need of a reality check. I like also how Rockstar refers to disassembled executables as "source code." Despite the fact that the obvious root of the term is "source," meaning the *original* code. The stuff that only Rockstar themselves actually have. This whole situation is laughable. Good job to Rockstar for blatantly lying and blaming their customers for their stupidity.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're probably going take that code out of the game and relaunch it so it recieves a "Mature" rating. Still though it's ***** that the ESRB gave Rockstar an AO considering the minigame isn't accessible unless you hack into the games code. If this game gets an AO, what about Sim Copter and the hidden "adult content" in that game. Speaking of "sim" - there is quite a bit of "X-rated" content in the Sims 2. I mean, you can watch the characters in bed, make out, cheat on each other, have gay love, and some how the game gets away with a Teen and YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO CRACK ANY CODE.
- retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PARENTS: YOU raise your kids NOT THE GOVERNMENT
- lilchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wat is the code for PS2 does anyone know cause i havent seen it and i want to see if this is true or not
- Polly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rockstar needs to drop the victim *****. It's on the discs, it's not a mod, some stupid kid just unlocked it.
- maddog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is stupid.
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://torrentspy.com/search.asp?mode=torrentdetails&id=329580&query=hot%20coffee
NHAHA - MCKizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is definitely not a great thing for Rock star except for the publicity. I know I was working today at Hollywood Video and our partner store Gamecrazy was told to stop selling all of their copies and we were told to take down all the guaranteed signs along with the games themselves. The manager of Gamecrazy told me he called Gamestop and they were also taking theirs down, and as someone else mentioned Walmart will very likely no longer be selling this version. The two people who lose here are Rockstar, who has to resend out all these disks to sell, and the customer, because I know that we won't be taking any trade-ins of the old version unless Rockstar decides to do something about it. I just find it a little ridiculous to have to fix something that has to be modded to get to. No it isn't a mod, but it also isn't part of normal game play unless you mod the game to make it part, unless I am mistaken, which I may very well be. I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know, I am just going on the word of others saying that it must be modded to do. Oh well. It happens.
- steve693, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There are two winners in this situation, and neither of them are parents or children.
1.) Rockstar. They're getting tons of free advertisement, and we all know when something is controversial that sales go through the roof. I wouldn't be suprised if GTA:SA surfaces in the top 3 after this mess.
2.) That ***** bitch Hilary Clinton. What people don't realize is that she doesn't give a ***** about violence in videogames, this is just a big political move for her. It's her cheap way to win support of the family values right for when she runs in '08. GTA is a scapegoat. - Kyle1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My god, this is so ridicules. The mini game takes a lot of work and effort plus isn't even meant to be accessed and all you see is some damn *****. Are you kidding me? Who the hell that is playing this game hasn't seen some *****. Another thing why doesn't Rockstar just take that portion of the game out of the game and begin shipping that version. This is being blow way out of proportion. Its a damn game!!
