- nanowerx, on 07/20/2009, -2/+40Putting the tools to make Rock Band tracks into real artists hands is brilliant. We may finally start seeing some more indie bands using this medium to garner a following.
Activision is a joke, this shows that Harmonix is very much about the music. - doshindude, on 07/20/2009, -1/+34This is going to make Guitar Hero's ***** "GHTunes" excuse for a music studio look like a children's toy.
- Nicholas1989, on 07/20/2009, -0/+17Well it's about damn time.
Neither Rock Band nor Guitar Hero ever needed sequels, except to support new hardware. The songs should have always come as downloadable content, not a "new" game, and user created music should have been implemented from the get-go. - choch0408, on 07/20/2009, -1/+16Yeah this is definitely the right move for Rock Band! Not only does it give marketability to smaller less-known bands, but it also keeps the game from going stale!
- crit1caL, on 07/20/2009, -3/+16WAY TO GO ALL BILLY MAYS ON THE DESCRIPTION!
- smacksaw, on 07/20/2009, -1/+14I don't mind getting 60-80 new songs and updated graphics for $59.99. Do you?
- justice7, on 07/20/2009, -1/+10IF YOU ORDER NOW WE WILL INCLUDE A SECOND COPY OF ROCK BAND ABSOLUTELY FREE! BUT THATS NOT ALL
ORDER WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES AND WE WILL THROW IN A BOTTLE OF OXY CLEAN AND WET NAPS FOR YOUR WEB SURFING PLEASURE. - smacksaw, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7There's a lot of musicians with a mental block towards the plastic instruments, but the fact remains that if you can play drums, you can play them on RB/GH. And if you can sing, it's the same. If you can't sing, you can't do that part of the game.
With the bass parts, most of them are as simple as actual basslines. 5 buttons is really enough. With chords and hammer-ons you can go up and down scales in a way that makes sense. The only real difference is guitar, but once you realise how they translate guitar to the game it makes sense. Steely Dan is a great example of something I never thought would translate to Rock Band with songs like My Old School, but the way they charted it was genius. It makes total sense.
You'll find remarkable consistency with the chords in the game and actual chords. - Chooxo, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7Putting the tools out there should help rapidly expand the song library.
Good on Harmonix, they always go one better (and don't overdo it with endless sequels). - tonytroz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+6Not to mention the RB2 fixes including allowing one character to use multiple instruments, a better career mode, etc.
That stuff would have been too much for a patch (if patching all of that in was even possible with the state of the Rock Band source code). - icarussmicarus, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5The developers have already stated they aren't accepting any covers at all [or at least during the beta testing] for this network to avoid problems such as unlicensed covers.
- crashingechelon, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5As long as Rock Band 3 has a decent setlist, ups the experience, uses all the DLC and tracks from RB1&2, I'd be glad to pay.
- neela14, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5I'm sure those will get rejected during the review process to avoid legal action :(
Wait, ***** that. Everyone upload Metallica covers. - CobraClutch, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6Just because Rock Band didn't release their first version of a music studio doesn't mean they weren't even trying. I'm guessing they have been working on it for a while.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4The Beatles aren't a real band?
And neither are the Who?
Wait, the Stones aren't a real band either?
I need a second to deal with all of this. - bliz20, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4BUT WAIT THERES MORE
- ShrayMonks, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4http://instantbillymays.com
- seinman, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4All tracks must pass reviews by both the community at large and Harmonix staff. This will weed out the poorly engineered tracks.
- kaneco, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4I love Billy Mays!
- tonytroz, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3That, that model worked for the Apple store. Charging $99 a year helped weed out things like fart apps.... oh wait.
- seinman, on 07/20/2009, -3/+6I don't know why you're the bastard child in general, but in this case it's Sony's fault for not embracing community development. Rock Band Network is based heavily on Microsoft's XNA program, which is for independent game developers to get their material on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Since neither Sony nor Nintendo have a similar system up and running (or plans for one, as far as I have heard), there's nothing Harmonix can do about it.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3I hope it is better than the crap that Guitar Hero released with World Tour. Epic fail for making cool songs... well, the dude who did the Kids in the Hall theme song, that was pretty good, but the other 9999 songs suck.
- keineliebe, on 07/20/2009, -2/+5you know, usually a statement such as this would come a little with something like, " ......needs more nickleback" to let other people know you are being sarcastic. everyone knows nickleback sucks.
- troub, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3More likely, career artists (even poor, unknown ones) can pay someone else a few bucks or a few beers to build the note charts for them. Unlike the drum machine which becomes part of the actual music, or artistic product, the Rock Band track is a promotional tool. It's separate from the creative process, and there's no real need for the musician to create the track themselves.
- Gizza, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3Well Activision were bound to beat Harmonix at something eventually.
- revisrev, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2Why, precisely, wouldn't they?
- TheBifman, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3How exactly are Rock Band instruments going to replace real life musicians?
- bigdoglj52, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2so rock band is really changing the game every time they release something? seems like guitar hero keeps releasing the same game with diffferent songs over and over again....
oh and couldnt people upload real songs and lower the price a ton compared to the price on their online store? - Hortnon, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3A year in advance of the announcement of a coming feature.
What took them so long? - stooge4ever, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3...LittleBigPlanet?
- rabidsquirrelOG, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Yeah, they mentioned the peer review process a few times in the video.
Those Harmonix guys are freaking geniuses! This is going to be huge in a few years. They will significantly morph the music production and distribution channels with this if it is even halfway decently turned out.
Why am I not working for this company? I need to submit a resume, asap!
;) - smacksaw, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2I liked the dig they made about that at the beginning.
- KillCure, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3This is a pretty HUGE step in gaming. I'm liking the user-generated support developers are giving nowadays.
Little big planet, and now this. - CapeKid, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3I don't buy this excuse. It is notes on a chart, and most of the actual work is done on a computer. They already release new songs for PS3 through an ingame store. All they would need to do is take the charts generated on the PC and use their normal process for moving them into PS3 (which they obviously already have in place, if these indeed are the actual tools to make charts).
More likely it is an exclusivity thing. Just like Xbox getting RB2 a month earlier than PS3. - gamelord12, on 07/20/2009, -2/+3Yeah, I'm sure they've been working on it for a while too; you know, since Activision/Neversoft announced GHTunes.
- Hortnon, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2"Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold more than 567,000 copies in its first week and grossed more than $25 million.[33] The game has seen more than $50 million in sales in the first three months following its release,[34] with over one million copies sold.[35] The band itself saw a 40% increase in their catalog sales in the weeks following the game's release.[36] According to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith has made more money for the band than any sales of their previous albums"
Yeah, no real band would ever want to make money or spread their music. - tidu, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1Harmonix knows that Nickelback sucks, they've said in presentations about their game that one of the things that aren't needed for Rock Band is Nickelback.
- Tiptup300, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1What the ***** does this have ANYTHING to do with XNA. They haven't even mentioned it at all in the video.
- rabidsquirrelOG, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I disagree. Drum machines were a trend, but it was a trend that didn't evolve into a 'norm' per se...
For a decade, drum machine tracks were in 90% of pop music, but that faded. There's still plenty of work for drummers, and there's still work for drum machines. Peaceful, and in some cases, mutually beneficial co-existence has been achieved, save for a few stubborn dinosaurs put out to pasture, I'm sure... - justice7, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1As much as I understand WHY nickleback sucks; here's the deal with them as I see it.. they started off as a solid rock band on their first album, second album sold out a little then they completely derailed and went full on mainstream corny-rock.
Not in my opinion that they sound bad, they don't. I mean, i knew of them back when Leader of Men was their big song and it was pretty kick ass at the time. Is that why everyone is so bitter? You don't have to like them, hell, i don't even hate them.. but i'm just a little curious as to why they get the Metallica treatment. Its not like they sued their fans and charge $200 per ticket for a concert (altho im probably wrong).
More people making rock music in my opinion is a good thing; even if its mainstream radio junk. - Boooohjoke, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Maybe I'll finally be able to see Nevermore in one of these games.
- coffeehaulic, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1true gh did have music authoring first, but I would consider this to be much better.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 07/20/2009, -1/+2And how should they test the tracks? There's no way to test UGC on a PS3, that's what XNA allows you to do on a 360.
FYI The normal process of testing involves Developer PS3s, not retail. The same process isn't compatible. - fanfablebig, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1can't wait to make some break beats.
- bubbachuck, on 07/21/2009, -0/+0console gamers, welcome to what PC gamers have been getting since 1993
- Bots, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1this is an awesome system and I'm certainly curious to see how many bands adopt this.
sidenote:
they need to address their ***** 4 pad drum set. only reason why i enjoy guitar hero more so than rock band is due to the drums. they have a better feel to them and are more similar to actually 'playing' real drums... 4 pads just isn't enough. - TheBadAndy, on 07/20/2009, -4/+4The $99 a year subscription fee to upload your tracks will hopefully work wonders to weed out the ***** uploads from the ones put up by real bands.
- gianthorse, on 07/20/2009, -1/+1yea and what rock band is doing is allowing NEW bands to upload music to "get noticed". do you honestly think any self respecting band would stoop so low as to try to make it big through a ***** video game that every 12 year old bought. and thanks for the aerosmith example, since they are the perfect example for a ***** mainstream washed up band trying to milk some money.
- coffeehaulic, on 07/21/2009, -0/+0don't get me wrong, mods are pretty impressive -- sometimes. but this is pretty epic.
