- phbohn2, on 06/29/2009, -1/+16stop releasing so many games when dlc could accomplish the same thing.
- o0jrock0o, on 06/29/2009, -1/+15"Thou shalt go wireless"
If you have to keep it to five commandments, this one needs to go. Wireless has lag, and these are RHYTHM games. Sure, you can calibrate, but the calibration is dodgy. Plus, batteries cost money. Maybe the guitars should be, but the drums should stay wired.
What REALLY needs to be added is "Thou shalt make durable instruments". No drum set out there is durable enough to practice the harder songs on expert for more than a few months without something going wrong. Even the Ion drum set ($300) breaks easily. I've gone through 5+ drum sets in a year (most of them replaced free). It's not me, though. Ask any RB pro, they will tell you how terrible the drum sets all are. - Akaziel, on 06/29/2009, -4/+15I'm sorry they didn't touch on your love for old school PaRappa The Rappa.
- Sabin, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12Someone should have invested in Rock Band instead of Guitar Hero.
- inactive, on 06/29/2009, -2/+11when you end up paying more for a rhythm game than a real guitar...it's gone too far.
- TheWilder, on 06/29/2009, -0/+8I think the biggest one is having song compatibility across the entire lineup of games. The Beatles: Rock Band is going to end up being its own entity, but that's not a surprise considering it's The Beatles. But at least it will have DLC such as the Abbey Road album.
- piieerrrree, on 06/29/2009, -4/+12RHYTHM GAMES? THEY ONLY TALK ABOUT GUITAR HERO AND ROCK BAND. BURIED.
- Sabin, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7No it hasn't. Activision has ruined it. Harmonix is still turning out gold with every release as they have since day one with Frequency.
- Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6 There is more to the music rhythm genre than Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Not bad games at all, but certainly shouldn't forget about the existance of DDR, IIDX, Pop'n, PumP, ITG, DJmax, Guitar Freaks, Precussion Freaks, DrumMania, KeyboardMania, PaRappa The Rappa, etc.
IMO, wireless is a problem as it is - doesn't mean it can't be improved, but there should be work done on the technology before advocating for total conversion to wireless for anything.
Another commandment: A timing window, and judgement system can make what would otherwise be a relatively simple to master that much harder. - Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6And before some asshat says "omg you could have learned another instrument in the time it took to master this game" - not really, those instruments take more time (more often than not) and a lot more practice and discipline. These games are just that - games to play for fun.
- AceAMasta, on 06/29/2009, -0/+6You can play the Death Magnetic DLC in Guitar Hero: Metallica.
- jjc5004, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6I disagree with the last one. If there are 4 or 5 songs on a game that I really want to play, I actually like the fact that the game makes you play through the other songs first. Some of my favorite songs to play I never heard of before playing on GH, and probably would have just skipped over.
- Beerduck, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5The problem is they only talk about rhythm games from US. People seem to forget all Konami's games that started the rhythm game genre.
- Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5"... swearing just makes you look like an incompetent idiot who can't come up with a better word. "
Pot... calling the kettle... black?
And judging somebody on if they curse like that doesn't make you look like an idiot? For all you or I know that person could have a vernacular that would only be found in a small league of sophisticates... then again, maybe not, but YOU DON'T KNOW. - mattyboy555, on 06/29/2009, -1/+5Definitely dugg for song compatibility across all games.
I wanted to play Metallicas new CD in Guitar Hero Metallica, but for some reason, they only made DLC for Guitar Hero 3.
Pure Corporate Greed.
::EDIT::
Yeah I like Metallica, I still think master of puppets is a kick ass album, so go ahead and bury me for going against Digg. - Khast, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3AMEN! (Though some of these points could hold true in most genres.)
Though, I don't mind hidden content in my games, BUT if it is advertised on the box, it should not be a "hidden" feature in-game. It sucks to read the box about what the game has, but to get it home and find out it is an unlockable extra. (What sucks even worse...is when said unlockable is the main selling point.) - Sabin, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3But the hit window on the notes is MUCH bigger than the lag from wireless controllers. Sure there is lag but it is not something you will notice if you are actually hitting the notes at the correct time.
- sonicjosh, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Don't forget about Elite Beat Agents and Ouendan on the DS, great games, and I'm fairly sure they didn't even use master tracks.
- maxer64, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3I really love these games.. but every few months is a little crazy. And the downloads aren't cheap. Get the kids off my lawn.
- Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Some people learn faster (or slower in some cases) than others I think.
- cstathis15, on 06/29/2009, -2/+4That's not so true. Anyone who plays expert (which is a lot more than 5% of the player base, I would bet) will notice the lag that comes from wireless instruments, especially in faster songs. Its there.
- aoki5, on 06/30/2009, -1/+3This article is ***** and was written by someone who has only played Guitar Hero games. Guitar Hero has ruined the rhythm game genre.
- MelekTawus, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure, I learned guitar to the point where I could play most of several songs in only about three months. I think it was probably at least six months before I could beat Guitar Hero 2 (my first rhythm game) on Expert.
- Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2"Games that came before this generation of rhythm games only had master tracks for songs no one has ever heard of."
IIDX's songs weren't always THAT obscure by a long shot. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2"Wireless has lag" - honestly I don't know how ***** like this still exists on the internet. Show me one study, test, or otherwise that demonstrates this measurable lag. Please.
- stupidfilters, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2its two completely different skill sets.
training technical dexterity and memory is one thing
whereas training reaction time or muscle memory is another (muscle memory being the reflex for playing the note shown through vision, so learning this doesn't improve sight reading real music)
I've played a lot of rhythm games and real instruments, and the only thing that really overlaps is the rhythm (except the drums, where some of the dexterity overlaps, but they disregard rimshots, and etc). - doctornkul, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Besides, rock band has a cheat to unlock all the songs and disable saving. This is the best way to do it, because it both allows you to play your favorite songs, even on someone else's console, while still encouraging you to play through all the songs.
- biekksa, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2you can play it in gh:wt AND gh:m, as well as III
- TheBEST205, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1LOL, you didn't get buried!
- TheBEST205, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I also enjoyed when EA decided to put a 60 day warranty on the instruments. Because of that, I am unable to play Rock Band anymore because they won't ship me a ***** replacement bass pedal for drums (which happens to break about every other month if you play expert drums). I'm not every buying another EA game again; ***** them.
- dadaas, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1There are tons of rythm games, you can find this kind of games at flash arcade gamesites. You even have PS dance thing.
- phbohn2, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1i did. i have rock band and rock band 2. but rock band 2 could have been accomplished with dlc for rock band 1 instead. same with the beatles rock band.
- inactive, on 07/09/2009, -0/+0i love all games
PC,XBox,Playstation,Xbox360,PSP,Dreamcast,GameBoy,GameBoy Color,DVDs,Playstation 2,Playstation 3,Wii,Macintosh
http://cheats411.com - sleepless, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1I guess I must be one of the few people that own the Beats game for the PSP. It's great, it's decently paced, though it could go a little faster than Extreme level. What makes this thing the best rhythm game is because it uses the music/audio file that you have. So if you want to jam to the soothing sounds of Harry Potter - The Audiobook, you certainly can do so. It turns that otherwise long ride of the morning commute into something exciting.
- Travelsonic, on 06/30/2009, -3/+1IGNORE THE ABOVE POST

(Before some asshat screams "OMG BEMANI FANBOI 1!!111!, This list is a mix of games between several companies: Roxor, Andamiro, Konami, Harmonix, NanaOn-Sha to name a few)

Agents. Are. Go!!! - preppypoof, on 06/29/2009, -5/+2i disagree with you on the wireless aspect - for 95% of people that play rhythm games, the extra couple of milliseconds in lag does not affect play. Batteries cost money sure, but the annoyance of wires trumps the cost.
Durable instruments though...couldn't agree more. I've had more than a few drum sets myself, and definitely my share of guitars. - ImYourRealDad, on 06/30/2009, -9/+5"Rock Band Pro?"
more like losers. - 2Deluxe, on 06/30/2009, -7/+2#6 Thou shalt not pretend to be anything other than a Beatmania/Bemani Series ripoff.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bemani - Jetforce, on 06/29/2009, -8/+3This article is crap.
Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero 2 are still the best two titles in that series with a severe lack of master tracks. Games that came before this generation of rhythm games only had master tracks for songs no one has ever heard of.
The rant about wires is stupid too. I still prefer a wire over paying for a new set of batteries for every six hours of playing.
Also, unlocking songs is a staple part of rhythm game tradition. As with any other video game genre, rhythm games need pacing too.
How about "Thou shall call songs by their correct title"?
"Killing in the Name of" - really? - lebruf, on 06/29/2009, -10/+4Commandment #6: Thou shalt be addictive to the point that all users who "master" the game will realize (after the fact) that an equivalent number of hours spent practicing real instruments could've gotten them a full-ride scholarship to Juliard.
- WorfoSAUR, on 06/29/2009, -9/+1I enjoy that they leave swear words out of the songs. I'm surely in the minority, but I would say 90% of the time swearing just makes you look like an incompetent idiot who can't come up with a better word.

What is Digg?
