- mattsull, on 11/04/2009, -2/+61There are much better reviews that you could have submitted than this.
- dougm68, on 11/04/2009, -0/+44and then years later bitching because no one makes good games anymore.
~leecher owning. - PCMichiana, on 11/04/2009, -0/+44The Spirit of Baldur's Gate tied in with the Character Depth of KoToR and cinematic greatness of Mass Effect. Bioware has done it again.
- wolfing, on 11/04/2009, -0/+38It's a great game. Great games like this should be encouraged. Buy the game, let them know that we're willing to pay for good things. The PC version is the best of the 3, and it's cheaper too.
- swollentiki, on 11/04/2009, -1/+29Pre-ordered it on Steam. From all the reviews I read about Dragon Age before, I thought it was worth a buy, which is rare since I thought Fallout 3 was going to be good but didn't purchase it until there was a sale.
For those that say they will torrent it, I will offer you some advice. As someone that started their computing days with shareware (pre-internet) and downloaded games and spps for free, I understand where some of you are coming from. If you want to try out the game on the PC to see if you like it because there is no demo, then I have no problem with people that get the game for free. However, if you enjoy the game at all, you have an obligation to purchase the game now. If you like it and plan to buy the game when the price drops, you have an obligation to stop playing until you buy the game. If you don't like the game, no harm no foul, just don't play it.
As someone that use to do the same thing (even before torrenting was available), I had my reasons for doing so. As I've gotten older, those reasons are harder to justify. Make no mistakes about it, if you torrent a game or app, that's stealing but in my opinion its totally understandable to want to try out the game before you drop your hard earned money on it especially if you have a limited budget for games.
If you want to play it, but want to wait until the price drops, then you should wait until the price drops otherwise its plan ol' stealing. - Frixionburne, on 11/04/2009, -0/+27Game looks amazing, but this bit of language from that article about made my head asplode: "Not even two hours into Dragon Age, I realized my life was now its to do with what it pleased."
Ouch, George Orwell would be rolling in his grave right now. - DrDragun, on 11/04/2009, -0/+24Bioware is unrivaled in their writing, and I played many of their games to completion, but combat always felt dull. I want a ***** lightshow when I cast lightning bolt, with sizzle and crackle and a gratifying sensory impact, like Diablo or any number of other RPG's. I want a satisfying crunch when my axe connects for a crit. This was my biggest complaint about NWN, along with blocky outdoor environments (indoor were good) and uneven pacing.
The character development and writing are amazing though, and Bioware is truly the master of the RPG in the West. They need to add a bit more sensory stimulation to their combat systems though.
In any case, I bought Dragon Age today and am pumped to dig in. - youcantfind, on 11/04/2009, -2/+23Way to earn it, big guy.
- solmakou, on 11/04/2009, -1/+21I've been on this game for the past about 7 hours, pretty damned good. SKIDROW has an excellent release but this is one of those games that I'm going to man up and buy!
- Skyplatoon, on 11/04/2009, -1/+19Game really is a gem. Please buy it and support Bioware, they really set the standard these days.
- Charlie1er, on 11/04/2009, -1/+19Dozens of hours of gameplay... I'm scared!
- hawarkarem, on 11/04/2009, -1/+18Bioware, of all companies, deserve the money they earn.
- ziffel, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16Here's my review: Bioware opened up crate of awesome ... poured it out onto the table, and then poured awesomesauce all over it. Then they took that mixture and blended it with a 55 gallon drum of win. The result was epic deliciousness.
Buying this game will result in a ticket to heaven. - scyphozoa, on 11/04/2009, -3/+18Bioware's record is flawless
- mablung, on 11/04/2009, -1/+14You expected a high five didn't you. FAIL
- UselessTrivia, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13I'll buy this game simply because I want to reward anyone who produces a game with more than 20 hours of new content in it. Also I love bioware games and this will help tide me over until Mass Effect 2.
I don't normally hate on games just because they're short, because that's not the end-all-be-all of every game. Bioshock was like 8 hours at best and it was amazing. Portal was like 2.5 hours and it's one of the best of all time. But I've just grown tired of paying so much for short experiences. I'll happily pay 60 bucks for a fabulous game that's 8 hours long, but if it's only just "good" it's really starting to get old.
Ghostbusters was a good example recently. About 6 or 7 hours, plus a second play-through to get some achievements I missed the first time. Maybe 10 hours total. The multiplayer sucked so that only added about 2 more hours. I liked the game. I don't think it needed to be a lot longer than it was, but I don't feel like I got 60 bucks worth out of it. Maybe 40. - DrDragun, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13You gotta support the great developers to keep the great games coming. Great developers can, and do, die (particularly the developers for PC -centric games like RPG and RTS). They closed Ensemble Studios recently (Age of Empires, Age of Mythology series).
Support BioWare! - wolfing, on 11/04/2009, -0/+12Buy the PC version:
- It's cheaper ($40 or so)
- Free user created content (and the game has awesome tools to create content, expect great new adventures for free soon)
- The game was developed for the PC, and later ported to the consoles
- The PC version has a few more features
- Better performance (depending on your computer of course, but specially the 360 version has been reported to be slow and major load times) - Sentiax, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Yes I pre-ordered the Deluxe Version of this game, and I must say the entire game is absolutely fantastic. One thing that really appeals to me is they've taken a party based action rpg and managed to make it absolutely beautiful. The landscapes and models of everything are so detailed to ever little buckle or button that the game really feels more like an epic movie that you get to be a part of more than anything. The side quests manage to still be extremely intriguing and fun rather than mundane and reward oriented as seems the case in most games that have a main quest with other crap that you can do in between. I find myself actually wanting to do the side quests out of curiosity and for the story rather than solely for whatever loot I may get. The combat is absolutely awesome as well, it's fast paced and exciting while still allowing you to take some time to think if things get a little tough. One of my favorite features is it is a regeneration based health and mana system, the second combat is over, you start to regenerate mana and health so that you rely less on potions ( which seem to be mainly needed while combat is active, and often if you are not a tougher character). Anyway, that's my thoughts on the game, I encourage everyone to BUY the game if you are going to play it. Bioware is an excellent company worth supporting, and you can get it through steam to help avoid all the EA crap.
- OptionalPirate, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11I liked this more than the article.
- pathy, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11To everyone that's saying 'Buy the game, it's good! Support good developers!'
I offer another reason to buy this game. A long, complicated and difficult RPG. It's been so ***** long since we've had anything approaching this quality in a 'traditional' CRPG sense, this is something we should definitely encourage if you like that. - Animan351, on 11/04/2009, -1/+12I was about to buy this game online. Then I noticed the bastards were selling the online download of it for the exact same price as if you went to the store and bought a physical copy.
Lets see, No booklets, no cd, no shipping to the store's, no loss because the store selling it gets about 10%.
I realize that people will buy the download for convenience but if they won't even make it $5.00 cheaper (which would still earn them more money than a store purchase) then ***** em. - norman619, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Please mind the signs.
/ pointing to the sign which reads "DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS" - Averness, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10I felt the exact same way about Jade Empire. It was basically KOTR re-skinned with an oriental theme. Ditto KOTR2 and to some extent, Mass Effect. People are digging you down because they are fanboys, but what you say is probably true.
- CraigHwk, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10Wow, I didn't even realize the game was out yet! I thought it was not for another couple months. What a pleasant surprise.
- Monotonousblob, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9I prefer Giantbomb: http://www.giantbomb.com/dragon-age-origins/61-207 ...
- 3tcp, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8So you hate a company because they changed something about a game they were planning while it was still in development? Maybe you should just not invest yourself so heavily in the video game hype machines and pre-release announcements.
- burbankmarc, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10Why do people say "toons"? It's just awful.
- GhettoHmbrglr, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8I'm a few hours into the pc version.. It's simply amazing.
- Certain, on 11/04/2009, -3/+11I recommend the game. I have a toon, a mage, going on the 360 and one, a rogue, going on the PC. I will say this, it does feel like the game was meant to be on PC. From the interface to the controls. The 360 controls are sufficient enough but it does feel like they had to settle for the least annoying control scheme as possible or it wasn't quite what they wanted but it was the best they could do. If I had to choose between the two it would definitely be the PC version. And this isn't some pc vs console flame bait either. Play them both and you'll see what I'm talking about. Just a heads up for those people who have the means to have both and aren't sure which one to pick up.
- Midtowner, on 11/04/2009, -6/+14I played for a few hours last night and was somewhat underwhelmed. While I enjoyed KOTOR and its progeny, and this seems to have most of the good features of that series, the game seems somewhat linear. Maybe I'm not far along enough to give it a fair shake, but it seems like BioWare has decided on a formula -- spin an intriguing story, then mount that story on an all-too-familiar platform.
It seems like a good game, but there's nothing revolutionary and nothing game changing here as far as I can tell. - Locupleto, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9Downloads are the way to go.
No lost disks.
The installers are often updated so years later when you are on a new OS you can download the game again patched to work.
The manuals are usually scanned nicely into PDF. You can print if you really want a paper copy. The digital ones are never lost or destroyed. You can always re-download these.
No trip to the store, no parking, no gas, no waiting in line.
The portion of the cost that normally goes to the brick and mortar store instead covers their servers and bandwidth. - scyphozoa, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9and it was flawless
- 5thdigg, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9or how about if you're poor, just wait a couple months till it's discounted. stealing pc games just makes developers do console only games, and they suck.
- acid_jazz, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8$40?
- MrFisty, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7He accidentally the whole coherence.
- uberchaoslord, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7I'm not certain anyone has marked it as game-changing or revolutionary, however a good story on a solid platform seems like something I'd pay for anyway.
Movies 15$/2hrs = 7.50 an hr
RPG $40/40 hrs = 1.00 an hr
For me, Fallout3 was about .25$ an hour, because I played the ***** out of it. If a good RPG presents 40 hours or so of gameplay, its an easy investment. - anillop, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7Because not every game needs multiplayer. I would rather them spend the time making a well thought out and long single player game than shorten the single player game to make room for some multiplayer portion that i will likely not even play.
- 5thdigg, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7I like download better because you can easily install it on any computer you happen to be on, and if you reinstall the OS or upgrade, it's easier to install all your games at once. I couldn't care less about boxes and booklets.
- Kekeh, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7The DLC schemes for this game are a mess, you get a little bit of this and a little bit of that depending on where and how you buy it. There's tons of complaints about the DLCs breaking up after purchase. And of course it's obnoxious as hell to have a bunch of DLC adventures ready on release day already, why not just put them in the game?
- norman619, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6No *****. For the most part I tend to torrent games first before buying since the game industry stopped the practice of making a short demo available for people to try before you buy. I have been burned far too many times by buying games w/o trying them out first on the PC since once you buy it you can't return it like you can console games. ut developers like BioWare ave never let me down so I will be buying this game w/o dowloading first. BioWare sets the standard in my opinion when it comes to role playing games on any platform. We should all support vendors who consistently release great games.
- Midtowner, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Oh, I don't disagree. I find gaming for my entertainment dollar to be money well spent, especially when it comes to RPGs. I just find some of the other comments and reviews about this game to be a bit over the top. It's solid, looks pretty, even performs well on older machines, but it's no Oblivion or Fallout.
- scyphozoa, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6That is inaccurate. KotOR was turn based, Jade Empire was twitch based. That combat mechanic alone made the two games very different.
What they have in common are the characteristics of all Bioware games. Great character building, complex story arcs and other great RPG elements.
KotOR 2 was KotOR reskinned. - cloviejr, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5Awesome, getting this today. This definitely rescues me from the pile of ***** JRPGs in my closet for a few more weeks.
- udjet, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5It is 1st Day DLC because they had two separate teams working on the game and team 2 didn't get it done in time. It is not a necessary addition to the game, but does add a whole slew of extras.
On a side, anyone bitching about the DLC obviously doesn't remember past games very well. In the past if a team didn't finish in time then it hit the cutting room floor not to be seen for about two years when the super deluxe director's cut all expansions included version came out. - Daxx22, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5I'm 2 hours in and still on the starting story for my character.
Sure I'm slow, but I've enjoyed every minute of it so far, so for once it's money well spent. - DigitalKetchup, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5What the hell is with these adds? It feels like I'm on ***** crazy pills. When did digg turn into this cesspitt of *****, and obviously planted comments. 90% of the comments read like they've been copy/pasted from the ***** web-site.
*****! - Daedalus81, on 11/04/2009, -2/+7I'm really underwhelmed at the moment by the in-game cinematics. Very buggy and some very laughable dialogue. Play the city elf to where they break up the wedding.
- Skyplatoon, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Sounds like my little brother's retarded friend who simply cant understand why anyone would play a turned based RPG let alone one of Bioware quality, "You just sit there and take turns hitting each other give me Halo any day, now tha'ts a game". The xbox 360 generation is quite sad.
- BoomWav, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Definitely a GOTY candidate.
