- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -18/+258Man...You had the perfect opportunity to make a witty statement about Sony which would have resulted in countless thumbs up and you blew it! Tsk Tsk Tsk.
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -25/+103Resistance: Fall of Sony
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -3/+66As I recall, the developers of Resistance said that the 22 GB was really just the same game stamped 3 or 4 times for different localized versions. Rather than stamping blu-ray discs for each localization, they tried to save money by putting all localizations on one disc. In actuality, a single localization of Resistance could easily fit on a DVD.
- sets13, on 10/12/2007, -7/+55Sorry there is no button for *possibly* inaccurate. They do infact mention in the article that they are not one hundred percent on whether this is true or not though. So to sum it up you are burried for *possibly* being a douche.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -4/+53Except that no PS3 games are made on DVDs. Sony would have a fit.
- thealliedhacker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55Except for one flaw: making separate DVDs would be much cheaper.
- avenu420, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51hehe. If Sony were a song on The Downward Spiral, it would be "Mr. Self Destruct."
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -28/+66Yes, the title is quite right, Resistance is 20+ gb of garbage.
- spoonard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Michael Richards: LOOK!!! DIGGERS!!! THEY'RE DIGGERS!!!
- ACityInOhio, on 10/12/2007, -11/+43Wow...I thought people dugg corny jokes. I guess next time I'll make an elaborate reference to Arrested Development (they "Blu themselves silly") the Hyperintelligent Shade of Blu from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Sony's own personal Blu SOD.
Sigh...bury away I suppose... - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -25/+57Be sure to read the actual posts on the forum thread. There seems to be only 3GB of padding, maybe less.
Not sure how the author of that Joystiq article got 17.75GB... - addrake, on 10/12/2007, -16/+44I am absolutely stunned the fine upstanding company that brought us bootloaders and draconian DRM's would lie about content needs in order to sell more PS3's
STUNNED I SAY ! - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32To all the doubters, look at the thread. The poster himself says it's 17.75GB of padding (look at the title). The stuff he listed was just examples. He said there's more of that, and times 3 of the actual number of files, since they have the European, Japanese and North American padding all on one disc. The padding from each region version all goes on every version of the game.
- timjbart, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35The article is only speculation
- slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30What? Unofficial BS on Digg? No way!
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24And at the end of the thread it reveals that the update files on the disc alone account for 6.12GB of space.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Except with blu-ray there is literally zero benefit to "padding" the discs due to the way the disc is read. I wish I could've marked your comment as inaccurate.
- captjc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Ha Ha.
If this was Slashdot, they would have you hanging upside down with a fork up your ass. - EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Can we make any unsubstantiated statement as long as we put a question mark at the end? Yes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNbOG4t31FA - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30Well I've spent the last few days playing it, and enjoyed it. Have you played it yet, to justify calling it garbage?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18""Except with blu-ray there is literally zero benefit to "padding" the discs due to the way the disc is read. "
Get back to us when you've actually written IO code for a PS3 game..."
Did you? - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Those numbers are offsets, not file sizes. See thread:
http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/showthread.php?p=881724#post881724
Padding file size = 32MB.
Total padding = 1.9GB.
Total FMV = 7GB.
Audio = 2.24GB. (605MB for music and English language only)
Game Assets = 6.12GB - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23So it begs the question, why write an article if you don't know. Could it possibly be to stir up *****? Never.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+30some guy on the forums said this.....
I dont see any proof
Everybody bashes on the PS3 and believes anything negative about it - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14wtf is wrong with you?
- otheruser, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18This is inaccurate. If you read through the post, you find that the author mistakenly assumed the numbers represented file size, while in actuality, they were markers for position.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12marked inaccurate. read the update he posted:
"[Update 1] We got our answer, the entire thing is blown way out of proportion. There are still padding files, but they are a relatively meager 420MB per region." - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11To all you people saying that if this game could be fit on a regular DVD, that means PS3 didn't need BluRay, I have this to say. Did you notice that PS2 is still around?
People are still buying PS2s. And PS2 games come on DVD. But initial PS2 games came on CD. Yet DVD turned out to be important to PS2 later. Just because PS3 doesn't need BluRay on day 1 doesn't mean that it would have been smarter for Sony to make it with DVD instead. In a year or two at most, 9GB will not be as useful as it once was, just like 700MB didn't last PS2 for long.
Blue Dragon takes 3 DVDs (25.2GB). Wouldn't it be better if it came on one BluRay disc? It'd almost certainly save money and be more convenient for the user. - MacHarborGuy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17marked as innacurate. there is a battle in the comments and in the forum the blog links to that the size of the padding was calculated wrong. It may actually be between 400MB and 1.7GB rather than 17GB.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Joystiq updated their post:
"[Update 1] We got our answer, the entire thing is blown way out of proportion. There are still padding files, but they are a relatively meager 420MB." - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12oh no!!! another sony medium is useless? what a surprise.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Gears = 4.7 GB of Awesomeness
- slimnickyy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I think they just figure 20+GB would make pirating difficult.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The padding amounts to less than 1GB.
Marked as inaccurate. - triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8well even though you got dugg down to hell, you get some vindication knowing you were right in light of the update that was posted on the article stating its inaccurate.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well looks like that "possible" turned into an "is".
- icealchemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6More like Joystiq = 24.88 KB of garbage.
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Too bad none of these rabid fanboys will see that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5unlike EA sports titles which are 30+ gbs of pure *****
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How do you know he hasn't?
I can say this, inserting padding files to put files in particular locations on the disk can make seek access times much faster. This is completely separate from using padding to get to the outer sectors of a CAV disc (which is unnecessary given the 2x CLV drive in the PS3). - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8You write an article about it so you can get independant verification. If the person was sure about it, people would still call BS just because its "just one guy" saying it.
- Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8who writes an article about something they haven't reserched themselves and admits in the article that they don't even trust their own source?
- dig412, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Longest. Comment. Ever
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10thealliedhacker:
No it wouldn't.
Where does this crazy idea that BluRay discs are expensive to make come from?
They're injection molded on the same equipment as CDs, DVDs and HD-DVDs. Yes, fallout rate will be higher due to tighter tolerances, but since the discs are so cheap to make, throwing out a few more will not affect the overall cost much.
The final game size is 16GB because they compressed it at the end using a special I/O library that puts multiple files into one and compresses them all. It increases throughput and saves space. - nooreazy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ROFL!!!!
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not only that...your WRONG!!!
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The post has an update at the bottom:
[Update 1] We got our answer, the entire thing is blown way out of proportion. There are still padding files, but they are a relatively meager 420MB per region. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Actually 3 DVDS are cheaper than 1 BR."
No, they aren't. - suriyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3>_O
I can't believe I just looked at that.
My eyes! Dx - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Insomniac said in the final build they got it down to 16GB.
Don't let stuff like Ted Price at Insomniac's blog contradicting you keep you from spreading lies.
