Sure, if you have an HDTV and the proper connections, the PS3 and 360 will both be able to EASILY outperform the Revolution in terms of graphics... BUT... it's just close enough that displaying them over composite video cables on a standard definition TV (like most people will probably continue doing for quite some time) will negate a lot of the extra detail provided by the competition. Also, when taking Nintendo's plans for the Revolution into account... it's looks like it has plenty of horsepower. Remember, they're positioning the Revolution as the console that everyone can own and enjoy. It has to compromise between being easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet. They want it cheap enough to minimize the financial risk for the non-gamer, position itself as the perfect second console, and aim for the gamers on a tight budget... while remaining powerful enough for the core Nintendo gamers. If it can manage that balancing act, Nintendo will be poised to retake the industry... especially with the Xbox 360 and PS3 both fighting over the same increasingly focused market. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35"If this game is anti-aliased, I shall buy it immediately!"
The problem with the game industry as it stands, summed up in one sentence. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29no, it is like a FPS... you are free to move around. this isnt ***** duck hunt
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26displacement mapping is all i have to say.....
http://209.132.69.82/zbrush/zbrush2/images/displacement/displacementphone.jpg
nintendo patended it
the first model would be an example form the 360 the last would be in the revolution
beating the competion with less power......... Priceless - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24And the line of the day is:
"Hotlinking or use of these images without permission is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and is enforced by the original poster."
Ironic anyone? - boo37, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19What does anti-aliasing have to do with a game being great (not sure if this will be great or not).
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I for one feel graphics don't make a game fun.
To this day my friends and I have more fun talking ***** & laughing our drunk asses off during some hardcore Smash Bro. Melee matches.
And the rumor that the Rev will come with an updated version that is playable online...*****, sign me up. I'm not ready to spend $400+ on any system. - xcalibre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I for one think the boys at Nintendo are leading the way out of this stupid I-can-show-more-pixels-than-you girl fight between Sony and Microsoft. Just imagine, while the two top players are fighting over polygons, Nintendo coming along with its more simple "I give you new experience" approach and stealing the show, I call that total Pownage!!
I'm not a Nintendo fan-boy, I don't even own a Game Cube. I just think its good for Nintendo to retake the industry with its more creative solutions. Just to show Sony and Microsoft that there things that gamers care about other than graphics. - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21shouldnt you be jerking off to oblivion's graphics??? no one cares,
- greenbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I'm just glad to see to a game company actually showing us something, whether it looks that good or not, rather than keep it tight lipped and vague.
- chaosbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14If only we could harness this power into something really usefeul, like taking down the RIAA instead of just bitching about them
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I agree with you 100% on this, but that isn't what this it about. The point here is that the Revolution will have great graphics *as well as* awesome gameplay. I'm a huge Revo-fanboy, but even I agree graphics can help make a game better.
- Dari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, graphics aren't what Revolution will be about. Nintendo is trying their best to pump some innovation into the industry. They did a fairly good job with the DS, so far.
What I said before was countering these Nintendo zealots who swear this game is up to the other standards. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@macgabriel87: I wouldn't quite put it on par with the 360 or a PS3, but I definitly think it pretty close if your looking at everything on a standard-def TV (as 90% of people do). It's not quite high-def, but it's certainly acceptable in my book. I'm much more excited about that controller functionality anyway, the graphics really take a back seat to that...
@davidv: Maybe I should explain that situation a little better. An anonymous fan scanned the images and created a googlepage for them. He's being really strict with controlling their distribution, and made sure I did the same when they were posted on Nwizard. I think he's afraid of Game Informer coming after him...but yeah, so, Nwizard technically isn't technically affiliated with him, he's just been kind enough to give us access. So all those "No Hotlinking" banners and stuff are something he's requiring. So, please, don't hotlink. :P
@matt.rubin: that's a great thing to point out. I think a lot of people underestimate the power of mapping. It's comparable to the situation with video cards on PCs. It used to be the speed was all that mattered, now what's really important are the shaders. You could have some crazy, souped-up thousand dollar graphics card, but if you don't have HDR support, your not going to be playing Half-life at full capacity, while a measly $200 card handle it better because of that. So it's definitly important to remember that output!=$$$+power. Brain over braun I suppose... - razorsharp84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9who do you work for--Sony or Microsoft?
- ExplosiveNixon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"you look so a complete moron."
Oh, and you do not sound like one? - dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/04/11/red-steel-official-press-release-new-scans/
you can actually read the article with those, - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Personally matts, I would agree it's nothing ground-breaking, but it's just good to see the Revolution isn't completely dead graphics-wise.
I would say it's impressive for a launch title, but I do feel people are focusing to much on the graphics and not enough on how cool that controller functionality is. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to say, I've heard some really stupid things said around the fanboy circles, but that ones among the best.
"...you look so a complete moron." Sounds like something right out of Zero Wing...viva la CATS! - AwesomeMonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its not like any 360 games looked that good at launch either, graw is still the closest thing to next gen on the console
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Although, Duck Hunt would be cool. This is NINTENDO we're talking about here...
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to admit, I was a bit disheartened when I first heard about the revolution specs but these pictures quickly turned my frown upside down. Looks like an awesome game!
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for pointing that out dracula7, I wasn't aware anyone else had readable scans, that's why I thought the story was so digg-worthy. Sorry to anyone if I may have over-boasted the "exclusivity" of this, I just wasn't aware anyone else had the high-quality scans already...
In my defense, I think the ones on Nwizard and the minisite are of slightly better quality... - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh wait I missed at the botom

- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4First off, since we haven't seen the final build, we really have no way of telling what kinds of graphics techniques they may imploy in the end.
Second, is it really that important? I mean, even if there are a few jaggies, is that really that big a deal? I can understand in some high-def super-realistic racing game or something, but this is a standard-def FPS, and a very non-conventional one at that. If your basing your purchasing decisions on graphics, you've really missed what Nintendo is trying to accomplish with the Revolution. - rishid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't get to see them either. Hopefully someone has them cached and will upload somewhere.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5O god! The horrid digg effect! It's worse than I thought!
Don't fret guys, the site will be back up with some extra bandwidth soon.
Meanwhile, you can still see all the stuff at:
redsteel.revolution.googlepages.com - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Site's back up! Sorry about that guys! That digg effects a lot stronger than I thought it was! If it gets any stronger I'll have to get an entirely new server! ;P
It's times like these where it's great to own both the website AND the host... ;) - Ponch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This Account Has Been Suspended
Please contact the billing/support department as soon as possible.
hello digg effect - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Any mirrors/coral caches/whatever?
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those screenshots put to rest any doubt that the Revolution can't render next-generation graphics.
If Nintendo can deliver the control schemes they've hinted at they are most definitely going to earn back some of that market share they've slowly lost over the last decade.
SIDENOTE - standard definition images don't necessarily look bad on a *decent* HDTV set. As with everything else, in the HDTV world you get what you pay for. - Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A year and a half ago people were saying the same thing about the DS. Then again nintendo did make the virtualboy.
- macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16i like red steel. im surprised at the gfx. it looks just as good as xbox 360 gfx!
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lol, well said chaosbuddha...
Yes, this is my first time experiencing the digg effect...I was on the front page for a whopping 10 minutes before I got suspended! That's ridiculous! (the site IS back up now)
So, maybe digg users should just start digging sites we want to take down? Oh, the possibilites... - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Another thing that people fail to realize is that you don't need to jump around and swing your arms like a moron to play the Revolution. If you actually read the information that's been put out about the way the controller works, then you'd know that even slight movements will be picked up by the controller. And no, I doubt your arm will get tired. You're holding a controller here.
- firemaker103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's kind of sad that people think a game is bad because it has super-high quality graphics that are pre-rendered...
(Just in general, not at this article/topic) - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If the Revolution is going to have all old NES games for download...
I can finally play Impossible Mission again!!!
"Destroy him, my robots!" - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Try it. I think you'll find it quite a hassle...
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These images really give a better view of the Rev's graphics.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4graphics are 1up for me.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The problem comes from fixed-resolution TVs like those which are LCD-based. CRT-based monitors have the capability of displaying analog resolutions. Ever try using an LCD monitor at 800x600 mode? Blur city. Ever wonder why a CRT can display 640x480 just as sharp as 1280x1024? That's why.
Get a CRT-based HDTV. Sure it'll weigh 500lbs, but it will also make your standard-def content look just as good as it did on a standard TV. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, NOW it's been taken down (the article scans anyway). I jumped the gun saying I would be able to upload them again, because I'm really not in any position to take on a legal battle over this (my site is adless and non-profit afterall), especially since I'd clearly lose. I guess the man wins this battle, sorry guys
I'd also just like to reiterate Nwizard isn't legally in anyway affiliated with the site that posted the scans... - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@CrimsonBlur:
"If you don't [have an HDTV], the 360 and PS3 are still at least 2x more powerful, so even if the graphics will look similar, you will be able to do things on those systems (like more advanced AI, more characters on the screen) that the Revolution will simply not be capable of."
I have to disagree with you there. First off, I think your overestimating the difference between the systems, at least in regards to first-round titles. I think it'll be a couple years before we truly see the specs make a heavy difference. This always occurs in a generation transition.
In regards to stuff such as AI, if you actually research the architecture of the 360, and especially the PS3's Cell, you'll find that they were built with a focus on graphics and many developers are saying it's actually hindering AI development in exchange for graphics capabilites. The Cell's counter to this is the sheer speed capable by reserving an entire core to just AI. However, that level of programming is just not done these days, and it's going to be a LONG time before you see those 8 cores in the PS3 actaully get some proper use.
So, looking at it this way, it would hold that each system should come into it's own at different times in the cycle. The Revolution will be the best out of the gate, with graphics comparable to the others on standard-def TVs, and within a year developers should start pumping out some TRULY revolutionary games. The 360 will follow soon thereafter, as it finally gets...well...some games. The PS3 will really be the latecomer to the race, starting out with graphics not far beyond the 360 and w/ a price tag too high for most. A few years down the road however, when Blu-ray and the Cell are a bit more familiar to developers and costs drop, you'll finally see the system do some mindblowing things. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just at all the above posts in general:
I'd like to remind everyone that regardless what you think about the graphics, amazing or unimpressive, I think it's very important that we all remember what makes this game exciting and what makes this news at all: the controller. IMHO, I think it's the greatest thing to happen to FPS's since they invented...well, the FPS. If your one of those not feeling so hot about the Revo controller, I'd say just try to stay subjective, and imagine the possibilites. It's not wrong to have doubts, but make sure your looking at all the positives as well as the negatives. And that goes for you Ninty fanboys too (myself included), it's only fair to look at both sides.
So, if you haven't already, go here: http://redsteel.revolution.googlepages.com/scans
and actually read through the article, and get a feel for what the EXPERIENCE was like more than just what the VISUALS were like. We should also remember this is an unfinished product, and so things will likely change, most likely for the better, by the final build.
I think this looks way better than anything the 360 is offering myself, but that opinion is not based one bit on graphics. I feel that when looking at any game on the Revolution, or really at any videogame in general, we really need to take the emphasis off the pretty visuals and put much more focus on how much fun we're going to have playing the game, and THAT'S why I'm so excited about Red Steel... - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope everyone got a chance to read the article, cause it's been forceably removed...

Game Informer - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Remember that, one, these are scans and thus not perfect quality. Two, the game is still in development and often things like graphics effects and filters are left off until the end. So hopefully the final build will take care of your issues.
But still, you hit on what's truly most important that so many people are missing: that awesome control scheme. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1::cough::cough::
http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/04/11/red-steel-official-press-release-new-scans/
I don't know how their gettting away with it...but they are...so if you haven't read the article, check that out. If you just wanna see the pretty pictures, check the digg link. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cant wait that game looks badass.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think once the game is actually finished, if you compare it to a first-round 360 title on a standard-def TV, you'll see that the Rev's not to far behind graphics-wise. People claiming it looks just as good as a 360 game at this point are stretching it, but I think it will certainly be comparable once we get the final product.
It's interesting to see how everyone seems to think that the Revolution will either kill Nintendo or put them back on top. There's very few people on the median... -
