- Wickerman392, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46I feel that a strugglesome game embiggens the soul and is quite cromulent...
- IcyStorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Uhh, at the Wii? Why at the Wii? I was at E3 and you pointed at the TV.
- Casedot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37After I read "Depending on the difficulty level, this can be quite strugglesome..." I stopped reading. I'll wait for a review by someone who uses actual words.
- Zipp425, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Strugglesome is a cool word. Its like a struggle, but its also troublesome... strugglesome.
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27theres probably a firefox extension that allows you to filter out good stuff and leave the crap, but what do you want with that?
- thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25You're failing to "penetrate" and digg is probably a contributing factor.
- ajwillys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16My lunge is also lacking.
- nPlastic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm digging for the press, not the article. I played the Red Steel E3 demo, and there is no lunge. At that time, you swing left/right or up/down. But I suppose he could be playing something newer.
Also, the contention that you aim at the Wii is dead wrong. The Wii does have a sensor strip, and I don't think you can block line of sight between the controller and the strip. If it's centered at the TV, you should have no problems aiming the onscreen reticle (though the E3 demo was *DAMN* sensitive). But you're probably not going to be holding the controller in front of you like a gun anyway; it's much easier and less fatiguing to aim from your lap.
My overall take was "good idea but needs work." Ubisoft does have time to give it the polish it needs, though. I hope they deliver a winner. - sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yorn... skip over them and shut up?
- Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13And I'm sure that you will be able to calibrate this so that you actually do point at the screen. Anyone remember the super scope 6? You set the sensor wherever, then you calibrated your shot before the game began.
- Warptera, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Isn't there that strip for detecting the remote that's supposed to go near the tv? If so, then it wouldn't matter where the console itself is.
- student69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11From everything I have read you aim at the sensor strip which you can place above or below your tv. So you might not be pointing directly at your tv, but it should still be very intuitive.
- gkzhang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They say Steven Colbert makes up words but I still believe him.
- PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10That's how I thought it works, but look at the third paragraph:
"Aiming takes some slight adjustment, thanks to the fact you actually have to point at the Wii system instead of the TV screen"
Perhaps when these people reviewed the game the strip was somewhere near the Wii. - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7i found your comment quite infactulent, and thusly procumbered.
- olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8absolutely - the number of people that come on IRC telling me they play their games in 1600x1200 on a p120 or something stupid "because your eye can't see more than 25 fps anyway". simple trial and error would tell you that this is absolute *****, because 27 fps looks choppy as hell. look out of the side of your eye at a monitor on 75hz - you can still see the flicker (your eye's more sensitive to light intensity in your peripheral vision). and all because they've read somewhere that a TV signal is 25 or 30hz.
yes, but the tv picture is interlaced (so double that frequency) and they also have a phosphor coating on the screen for longer image persistence.
even ignoring these facts - why do most monitors go up to 120hz? why are all TVs in the world at least 50-60 hz... and why do people pay a very large price premium for 100hz TVs? is the whole world just wasting their money? or is there something severely wrong with your assumption? - Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"The human eye can only see approximately 27fps anyway."
Where do people learn this *****? A person can easily perceive well over 100 frames per second. You might not be able to tell much difference in the smoothness after it hits about 60fps or so, but your eyes can definately "see" much higher. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6hopefully the crosshairs are adjustable, they are huge... and hopefully they arent huge because of lack of accuracy with wii remote
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9no, its just some people don't know what the hell they're talking about... you point at the sensor strip... NOT the WII. and if you place the sensor strip near your tv (like its recommended) then your aim won't be perfect, but it will be better then they make it out to seem.
- rallion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Wii works nothing like that old thing. That used a camera in the gun. The Wii uses position sensors. The camera tech just plain would never work with a game like Red Steel, or...well, anything with graphics much nicer than Duck Hunt.
- olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah it's scripted with wiimote gestures - i.e. it's not proper sword control like the tennis game etc, or die by the sword on pc.
- Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11@bjweeks: .
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6YOU DONT POINT AT THE SENSOR STRIP AFTER CALIBRATION,,
ubisoft needs to implement the pointer feature properly (and will). in mario galaxy you calibrate by aiming at mario, and mp3 also had the pointer implemented...
as far as i know, red steel is shaping up to be a big disapointment. you dont actually control the sword in realtime, the wii reads gestures you make - so there is a delay and responsiveness/gimmick problem. without calibration the game suffers greatly but this is just a demo. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How long did you have to play it before you reached your conclusion?
- P0W3RMAC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My biggest problem with this title (and Metriod) is that instead of having he usual mouse-look (i.e. you move the mouse, you move your view), there's like some invisible box that if you move towards the edges of the box, you move your view while if your inside of the box, you just point to shoot. Think of mapquest of your having difficulty understanding what I mean.
Now, I'm not sure if this type of movement/shooting system is the best but I have to try it out before I make a final judgement.
Also, UBISOFT, MAKE THE SWORDPLAY MORE LIKE WII SPORT'S BASEBALL TITLE. This gesture system that they're using is basically just like pressing buttons, instead of hitting the button, you make a gesture in the air - not very innovative.
[PM] - shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How accurate is the swordplay?
It looks like I saw the same 2 slashes over and over again on the videos of it. Is a swing basically a glorified button press, or does the on-screen sword move in the same manner as your real-life swing?
I really, really hope games don't follow the former. What's the point? - Rangoth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I still hope this game gets cleaned up before launch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5yeah..kind of how the Wii fanboys prejudge the PS3...
- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@Yorn
I think you can subscribe to the rss feed for specific searches on Digg. But I don't know how to get all the digg stories minus Wii. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks promising, and I have to say, the graphics don't look bad at all.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like swinging my sword at *campers* who are pushing their way into *heavy* space. We have *parties* with lots of *sauce* to celebrate their death!
- daggerhart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3because they don't judge things prematurely?
[edit] someone always beats me to it. =) - PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9In the article they said that they had to point the controller at the Wii instead of the TV. What's up with that, is it a problem that isn't fixed yet? Because it sure sounds like one. It's not going to be that way for all games, why this one?
- kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was hoping the article would mention something about the control scheme they implemented in Red Steel, especially addressing people's issues with turning. As the article stands though, it looks and reads fairly generic, with a whole lot of information I already knew. Like nPlastic above, I'm digging only for the press.
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@yorn
yeah, im quite sure you can do it with greasemonkey - kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Well, it was a nice attempt at mimicking the sheer genious that was the monologue at the beginning of "V for Vendetta" ....
Next time feel free to use prepositions and other connectors that make a sentence a sentence, rather than throwing a whole bunch of words that start with W together. - tilt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3eww 30 fps! looks cool tho, i hope that doubles
- fiveoaks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5This preview is odd. Every other piece written about Red Steel around E3 described it as underwhelming if not bad.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This guys' playing a post-E3 build, so they've had time to implement improvements and changes suggested by people who've played the earlier demo.
- hillerman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4George Bush makes up words but I still believe him...
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Aw crap, I dugg this without RTFA because I thought it meant the COLOR of the Wii console. oops darnit phooey
- turntabletux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I have no clue what to think about the "WII." I love Nintendo, but the "WII-Mote" or whatever, looks very interesting. I'd rather stick to a basic controller, but it actually may turn out pretty fun.
That is weird that you have to point it at the system. That definetly is annoy me! It's also going to be a big step for Nintendo to try and do more Mature games. I know that they've transfered games over from other systems to try and jump on the bandwaggon. But if you see "Ghost Recon" you're probably not going to buy it for the Gamecube.
Nintendo is so used to making child and family games, it'll be hard to think of a 1st person shooter made especially for Nintendo. I'm excited to see what happens! :]
-Ant - doctabu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah, but... but... the PS3 sucks!
- Fritzed, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5How about the fact that a ntsc tv can only display 29.97 FPS?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Why can't you guys accept that he game sucks
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3allow me to clarify this one for all you. that is the ps3 version of their upcoming controller that scraps the rumble pack and adds motion sensing that is not up to the snuff of the wii.
- eddiek, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Duck Hunt on the original NES allowed one to point the gun and shoot directly at the TV, regardless of where the system was placed or what TV one was using. Am I reading this correctly? Sensor strip or not, I expected to play the wii games such as Duck Hunt out-of-the-box without the need for calibration. Basic point and shoot. The same applies to Red Steel.
- mrhahn, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2The human eye can only see approximately 27fps anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1W for Wii...
