- duhduhduh, on 03/01/2008, -4/+77It can really be a pain in the rear. In WoW, you can't tell what mobs are aggressive and in arena the gold/green flags are useless. The game designers apparently don't consider the needs of the color blind.
- yosempai, on 03/01/2008, -0/+55I was so impressed when I found out the colorblind feature in Peggle. I was really starting to get pissed at the game!
- fluidfoundation, on 03/01/2008, -5/+60He'e just pissed because he couldnt get past level 1 on Red Light Green Light Man for the NES.
- Kronos6948, on 03/01/2008, -0/+41It's not like we can't see colors...it's just that some colors look the same to us. For me, certain shades of red and green, certain shades of red and brown, certain shades of blue and purple, certain shades of red and purple, certain shades of pink and purple....look the same and I can't differentiate. If the world was done in Crayola's original 8, I'd have no problem.
- JazzFlight, on 03/01/2008, -0/+38I also think all developers should give the option for sub-titles in games. I'm not deaf, but I can see how that would ruin a game's story for anyone who is. I mean, the developers have the script in front of them, all they would need to do is copy it in and time the sub-titles. Not too much to ask.
- cleanme, on 03/01/2008, -3/+33I would like to write an article like this. I am a QUADRIPLEGIC gamer, I use my mouth to play games and I despise games that do not let me re-map the buttons to my liking. I've been planning on writing a letter for sometime now. I think now as video games grow&grow and you want as many sales as possible I think we will hopefully see more options&choices for the disabled. I mean how hard can it be to add sub-titles or add a button reconfiguration menu? I only see this as being a small bit of work in the overall grand scheme of things when making multi-million dollar games.
- inactive, on 03/01/2008, -0/+27are you supposed to be able to see something in those dots on top?
- Akaji, on 03/01/2008, -4/+29Wikipedia article states that about 1.3% of the US population is in some way colorblind: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorblind#Prevalence
Arstechnica reports that the "NPD Group" (whatever that is...) claims that 63% of the US population plays video games: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071212-repo ...
So, assuming independence, approximately 0.82% of the people who play video games are colorblind.
Granted, it would be NICE if companies would take into account colorblindness when making games, it may not be worth it to them (although I'm not sure how much would need to be done to allow any major games to be color-blind accessable).
One thing I will say about WoW, however, is that I think that you can get color-blind-intended UI mods that will change the colors and/or add patterns that are more easily distinguishable. - senatormac, on 03/01/2008, -0/+22Totally agree. I always have trouble seeing the red team in FPS's because they blend in with the green background of some maps, I always try to be on the red team so I can see the blue.
- KingGorilla, on 03/01/2008, -1/+22i think you're using literally wrong
- jeffh992, on 03/01/2008, -0/+20I'm colorblind and Halo is the worst! That damn minimap - the players are colored red and green I think? I don't know for sure, I just know I can't tell them apart and I'm the most paranoid bastard on the map. Starcraft was a problem too. "Take Red" meant nothing to be. Unlike Halo, I'm a Starcraft god and it didn't matter much.
- TheDuckHat, on 03/01/2008, -0/+19Maybe my friends will read this article and pity me now instead of yelling at me whenever I ask whether a helicopter in COD4 is good or bad
- isny, on 03/01/2008, -0/+19Assume you meant bonding, but, hey, each to their own.
- TecK415, on 03/01/2008, -2/+21I'm color blind. this happens a lot:
Some dumb ass: "dude, hax, what color is my skin?"
me: "um, I'm color blind."
Some dumb ass: "fag."
[KICK]
:'( - Kronos6948, on 03/01/2008, -1/+20I think so...if not, you're probably colorblind too.
- kevthecatslayer, on 03/01/2008, -0/+19I played a bit of Hexic HD on 360 when I first got the system. The color scheme was horrible for me but free gamerscore points are hard to pass up, so I just guessed through it. A while later I found they had an option to put the symbols on for colorblind gamers. I was very happy to see that.
- xkorbin, on 03/01/2008, -4/+22I can't imagine what it would be like to never be able to see a color. It would be different if you had a single glimpse of it, to remember what that perception was.
But with no perception to begin with, you do not know what you are missing.
Similar to the Matrix, if you think about it. - cleanme, on 03/01/2008, -0/+17I use an on-screen keyboard with word prediction. Then on top of my monitor is a small, credit card sized (in area) infrared camera. It looks like a webcam. This tracks a reflective silver dot on my glasses, so wherever I look the mouse goes. Then to click I have a small infra red switch (about 50% bigger than a Bic pen cap) that mounts to the side of my glasses so that when I twitch my upper cheek it detects the change/movement and clicks.
- giskard88, on 03/01/2008, -1/+17in addition, they're not independent. Both colorblindness and playing video games are more prevalent among males.
- farmerbb, on 03/01/2008, -1/+17I happen to be red-green colorblind myself, and it's really not that big of a struggle at all to play videogames. For example, I've NEVER had a problem playing Guitar Hero, ever, and I can play most songs on hard. I always have gone by location of the notes, never by color, and it's always been second nature for me to do so. The only real problem I've ever had is during later levels of Collapse, when they introduce the green blocks alongside the red blocks and I'm mindlessly clicking groups of red and green expecting them to disappear when they don't. :)
(By the way, what does that colorblindness test at the top of this post depict, anyway? Naturally, I'm stumped.) - kinetix06, on 03/01/2008, -1/+17Nope. By your numbers, in the US 1.3% of gamers are colorblind, and 0.82% of the US population play video games and are colorblind.
- deepthought21, on 03/01/2008, -1/+16I'm red-green colorblind as well, great article. Very accurate.
- D3koy, on 03/01/2008, -0/+13He's red-green colorblind, and brown looks green? Clearly I have never understood colorblindness...
- dudeguy1234, on 03/01/2008, -0/+12You get crap at your job for being colorblind? The people you work with are douches. The ADA should prevent that
- Rhendal, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11I'm Trichromatically colorblind, meaning I can still differentiate between most colors. The problem occurs when some colors are put next to each other and I can't tell them apart. For instance sometimes on Adium I can't tell who's online or who's away just by looking at the color of the dot next to their name so I had to change the setting to change the shade of their name as well when they're away.
A friend of mine is Dichromatic, and we played Puzzle Fighter II one day. I could tell the difference between the red and green blocks, but he kept dropping red on top of green and vice versa. He was getting so pissed, especially since he was trash talking me about it before we played. - JazzFlight, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11It was a boat.
- Verytastycheese, on 03/01/2008, -0/+11Still, its more than 1/100 gamers. So at 0.82% of the US population that's almost 2.5 million gamers. Sure we're not going to break their balls, but its a good profit margin to simply add some custom color code, or put some shapes on certain colors.
I hated smash bros and some mario games because I couldn't tell the diff between green and red mushrooms... - inactive, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10The only problem I have with my colorblind is in Call of Duty 4, when the names above people's heads look exactly the same. Usually it isn't a problem, since the enemy usually doesn't have name above their head at all, but sometimes it shows up when your cursor is over them and I end up not shooting at them when I should.
Also, sometimes with Rock Band when I activate starpower. It makes the orange buttons blend it with the orange on the fretboard that indicates starpower is activated. I've missed notes more than once because of this... they need to add an option to turn that visual indicator off. - Akaji, on 03/01/2008, -1/+11Heh, you're right. I should have said that "0.82% of people in the US play video games and are colorblind". That probabilities & statistics class I took last semester did nothing for me :(
Anyway, still, about 1.3% of gamers are colorblind, which is still a very small portion. - xlneoMAXlx, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10Living as a colorblindie is difficult, especially when people know about it. My girlfriend happens to be colorblind, and she gets a lit of ***** for thinking pink things are red or orange, and blue things are green. Reds also look like brown.
I always feel so sorry for her because it does make her feel pretty ***** when people are around her they call blue things green, brown things red, and so on. Being colorblind takes a lot of work to get by when living in the everyday world full of color-coded objects. - kevthecatslayer, on 03/01/2008, -3/+13Preach on brother!
- kevthecatslayer, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10I usually try not to mention it in public because it gets annoying. At work I was told to make changes to a schedule. It was color coded and I effed it up horribly. Before that no one knew I was color blind before that. Now weekly I get crap for being colorblind.
- UNEXPLODEDduck, on 03/01/2008, -0/+10I'm "red-green" colourblind and green, brown and red all look very similar, as do blue and purple... It doesn't help my ambitions to be an artist..
- GfunkGbuss, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9Have you ever read the book "The Giver"? If not, I would highly suggest it. It deals with the first sentence in your comment.
- cleanme, on 03/01/2008, -0/+9Real mature buddy. I actually have used this name for awhile before my accident. Clean Me as seen on the back/front/side of dirty cars.
- Emnsta, on 03/01/2008, -1/+10do you use your mouth to type?
- gr33nie, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8The only problems I've ever had with being colourblind while playing games was with Hexic HD on the 360, and Bubble Breaker on my Windows Mobile phone. The colourblind options in those games are an absolute God send. It's good to see the developers taking these things into account when they are designing their games.
- DeadBabyFloat, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8I've got some bad news for you...
- Verytastycheese, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8Yep, probably. Either that or your monitor sucks.
- cyrix, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8It's not a sailboat, IT'S A SCHOONER!!
- Verytastycheese, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8Thats ***** cool! How fast do you type?
- dudeguy1234, on 03/01/2008, -1/+9Because people point out a color (green) and he looks at something brown and sees what they pointed out.
For example:
Guy 1: Money is green.
Guy 2: Ok. That traffic cone is green.
Guy 1: No! That's orange!
Guy 2: Really? It looks the same color as the money to me :( .
Guy 2 is told what green is, and knows that orange looks like green to him. - kevthecatslayer, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8that helps in few games, definitely wouldn't work in table tennis.
- lowerlogic, on 03/01/2008, -0/+8As a programmer, I know that remapping buttons should be one of the easiest things to implement - assuming the game was designed with key remapping in mind, and even if it wasn't it should only take a few days to look for all the hard-coded button checks and replace them with variable button checks which could then be changed in a remapping menu. On keyboards every key works the same so making a remapping menu and adding the functionality to the game is really straight forward and only takes a few hours to write. With controllers different buttons have different capabilities (i.e. the L and R triggers might be pressure sensitive and buttons A and B might not be), so figuring out how to remapping the different actions to different buttons would be trickier and there would need to be checks to make sure you didn't accidentally remap shoot and pause to the same button, but it should still take only a few days to write.
- ejan, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7It makes you wonder why those are the two most important colors on traffic lights. It's just the man trying to keep color blindees down.
- TecK415, on 03/01/2008, -1/+8You fail at life.
- JorgeGT, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7It's also good for non-english people like me, as we found reading English text very much easier than listening to actors speaking.
- psychobabbler, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7My friend was dropping me off at my house once but he hadn't been there before, I told him it was the house with the brown car in front. There were red cars and the brown car in a row on the street, he kept going and passed it up and I said "stop here where are you going this is the only brown car on the street?" And he got frustrated and said "well, I'm colorblind ya know!" I didn't know, until then.
- Gneekman, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7I'm slightly Red-Green colorblind. In Peggle I can tell the greens but the purples are hard to see. Most of my problems manifest where there are bright greens/yellows, blues/bright purples, whites/light blues, and light browns/dark greens.
But yeah, no problems with Guitar Hero, traffic lights, etc. because not only are the reds and greens different enough but they are in different positions.
When I do tell people about my colorblindness I do it because it's something interesting that not a lot of people know about me. Still, there's always someone who's got to be a jackass about it and ask "What color is this? Ha ha" before I can really explain.
Great story; I could relate to it; spreading awareness is good, etc. - TecK415, on 03/01/2008, -0/+7You're color blind. Or you need glasses. I'm color blind and can't see it at all. if you're not color blind you should be able to see it easily.
