- EvolvedAnt, on 06/21/2009, -4/+32I'm getting sick and tired of how ill informed people are...
I am a modder creating a custom campaign for L4D based off of the game Silent Hill.
Valve has stated to us (the community of modders for L4D) the very minute they annouced L4D 2, that our maps would automatically work for L4D 2 through the L4D Level Designers mailing list and was anwsering all of ours questions during e3 from their iphone. You could hear one of the employees iphone constantly buzzing during some of their interviews from our emails in the L4D mailing list.
They then repeated this over and over again, in countless interviews.
Finally, the L4D SDK is the EXACT SAME sdk that you use to make both L4D 1 and 2 maps. There is no "Lets see how long it takes for SDK 2 to come out", thats a complete fabrication made up by people who have no idea how to mod the source engine, and are just fishing for more reasons to complain pointlessly. The way L4D 2 works, is that it uses a new AI Director which is smarter, as well as a few new entities for spawning melee weapons, etc. All of this works as is already in the current SDK, all we as modders have to do is update our .fgd file to accomodate these new additions, and possibly rebuild the nav mesh for the new director.
This is coming from someone who has been modding the source engine since day one. Has been updating the L4D developers wiki, has been in direct contact with various Valve employees including Gabe Newell, Jeff Lane, Chet Falizak (sp) and others involved with L4D.
So please get your facts straight before making up more bull about how this is hurting the L4D custom maps community, and how long you think a fictional SDK that you just made up, will take to come out. - GhostInAShell, on 06/20/2009, -1/+21"Zoey, here's a lock pick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you."

"I hate vans!" - spartan777, on 06/21/2009, -0/+16I like how they tossed in the part about the 'nude zoey' mod in the last half of the last sentence there.
- Deepmist, on 06/21/2009, -0/+16Still waiting on that Dawn of the Dead mall map.
- TruEKuma, on 06/20/2009, -2/+18Well being an RE nerd i'll be pulling for this mod.
Assuming that all the kinks are worked out, they could have something really cool here. - Ghostalker, on 06/21/2009, -8/+23We'll see how good L4D2 is in time. I'd rather stick with L4D1; which can be modded and monkeyed with, then wait for L4D2 to release the SDK a year later when they announce L4D3.
- jedicor, on 06/21/2009, -0/+14Lane,
It's worth pointing out that most campaigns of any decent size are hundreds of megabytes. Campaigns with custom skins and textures and models (such as Dead Before Dawn), by the authors own admission, is actually more than a gigabyte in size.
Even when you CAN download content from the server directly after the next patch, you won't want to. 1GB x 7-8 people = hours. Whereas you can just go to the website it's hosted from and pull it at 200-2000Kbps directly. - hiddendecoy, on 06/20/2009, -1/+12http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2599
They're allowing addons with the update for next week so it will be supported in some manner. - PlusTheBear, on 06/20/2009, -12/+21This is why releasing a sequel in less than a year can harm the growing modding community.
- EvolvedAnt, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8Valve just announced the details for the Release Tools for custom mappers to be able to packadge our maps for official release that will work with the new Custom Add Ons system.
I'm pretty sure that is what the creator of the Dawn of the Dead mall map has been waiting for. With a map of that kind of quality, that he has been working on for 5 years, it only makes sense that he would wait to release it the CORRECT way, instead of the sloppy way that all the rest of the custom maps thus far have been released.
These tools are said to come out next week, so theres a good chance the mall map may be released within the same time frame. - isunktheship, on 06/21/2009, -1/+9relevant to my interests... and NOW IT'S DOWN.
- Lane, on 06/20/2009, -7/+15and since you can't set your server to allow map downloads its a pain in the ass to try out fantastic stuff like this, thanks a lot valve.
- Disjunto, on 06/21/2009, -0/+8don't ask us what your broken logic was, surely you are the one with the answer
- bonk2k, on 06/21/2009, -1/+7Why the ***** did I buy the 360 version of this game?
- 64705, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6The only thing I don't miss is the door loading sequences.
- PlusTheBear, on 06/21/2009, -0/+6Well they'll definitely work for L4D.
- ohmysac, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5He has a video on youtube showcasing one of the maps. At the end, it says the release date is July 1st.
- bonk2k, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5I don't need that tao *****. I need random, faceless strangers to feel bad for me based on a single sentence posted to a message board on a site that frequently features videos of cats doing humorous things.
- taibo, on 06/21/2009, -0/+5He's not done making it yet, chill out.
- DouglasQ, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4That just made my penis shiver.
- NodOfficer, on 06/21/2009, -0/+4It's dangerous!
http://www.netrox.net/%7Elabush/bredDang.html - inactive, on 06/21/2009, -6/+10L4D is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Actually, ***** bread. L4D ftw. - solvable, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3What's wrong with bread?
- braditude101, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3keep that trash out of here :/
- stevenbrown, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3Let me show you the way out.
- DoTheFandango, on 06/21/2009, -0/+3I can tell you why I did. All my friends and all the people in my fraternity that I play video games with have XBOX360s. Do you know how many of them use their PCs (usually laptops) to play games? Close to ZERO, maybe one or two. I want to play LIVE with them, and most of them are too arsed to download steam and then download this (also, we have a 10GB/week cap) where we could just buy the 360 version and essentially play right out of the box.
- Xvash2, on 06/21/2009, -2/+5Buried, the writer of this article totally copied the Joystiq.com article on it, and didn't even bother to cite it.

Plagarism much? - hiddendecoy, on 06/20/2009, -2/+5Mad props to Outatime. It looks amazing and I can't wait to try it out.
- unrealmp3, on 06/22/2009, -0/+3http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Sv_downloa ...
No need to stress the main game server for the download process. - theonlywizdum, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Valve has said, many times, that these maps WILL work with L4D2.
- mexfoo, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2lul
- ZippyV, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2I hope someone is also working on the mansion. That would be awesome.
- goomyman, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3i like the part where the zombies showed up
- carlosos, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2The money went into the pockets of the people owning Valve. I guess a few new cars, probably a few new gaming PCs, etc.
Some other money probably got reinvested into the company.
By the way this is how it works for pretty much any company that makes a good profit.
Yes, I'm also disappointed by Valve already working on L4D without having created a few new free campaigns (I was expecting new campaigns when I bought the game) but lets wait for L4D2 to see if we have a reason to bitch. Valve has always continued to support their old games and we won't know how Valve will release L4D2 and which features it will also release to L4D(1) after L4D2 release. - Akaricloud, on 06/21/2009, -1/+3Learn to understand sarcasm you idiot. L4D2 is coming out less then a year after the original came out. We were promised constant updates with new "Weapons, zombies, maps" etc. Insted they decide to release L4D2 because "All the new content was too much for just a single update"
- Deepmist, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2My $50 went towards the purchase of Left 4 Dead 1.
- davidjunit, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2Awesome. This morning it occurred to me that they could actually cram Willamette Mall (Dead Rising) into a campaign. I think I can settle for Raccoon City, though.
- ducttape36, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1ditto.
im more pumped for the crossroads mall (dawn of the dead) mod anyways. - woodychris, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1OH NOOOOEESSS?!?!?!? TEH BREAD IS TEH BOMB 111011
- Kamikid, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1I must have missed that part. :(
- firebirdx01, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Soon to be- Cease and Desist coming to Mod-Creator
I'm still bitter over the Crono Trigger sequel. - ducttape36, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1in left 4 dead the AI director decides where to put the zombies, map builders dont get to set spawn point. So until the SDK is out you wont see any.
- carlosos, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1Maybe your computer is 2 years older than the Xbox360 and you thought at some point that buying the xbox360 would be a better platform than upgrading your PC for the same money?
If you have a PC that isn't older than 4-5 years than I don't know why you bought the game for the Xbox360. - bigbadgoat, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I'm a computer engineer. I use a mac because it's one less thing I have to ***** around with in my every day life. There's no ***** around with consoles either, which is why I prefer then, and I can do whatever gaming I want with them.
- mrpunman, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Nice!
Silent Hill next please! - Taiyoryu, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Foxed in 3, 2, 1....
- schmiggyjk, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1Plagiarism my ass. There isn't any unique text copied, tell me exactly how that is plagiarism?
- Griminald, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1It's not plagiarism, but it's sure not very original, either.
But almost everyone borrows elements of their articles from everyone. - unrealmp3, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1A desktop PC might be expensive, compared to an Xbox 360, but at least I have the freedom of doing whatever I want with it, and not being restricted to a set of features a console gives me out of the box.
I'm a IT, and I use my common sense and good security practice to keep it safe and clean, which is far from being the case to the occasional user and that's fine, that's how I get a living. -
