- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -24/+144They act like the gamecube was a complete failure that nobody liked. It was simply getting a little outdated.
- infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+105Super Smash Brothers Melee will live on in my heart!!!!
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -9/+97The most ironic thing is that Gamecube games (and accessories such as the Wavebird controller) took a huge leap right when the Wii came out. There was certainly interest in Gamecube games, it's just that no one wanted to buy the system (and who can blame them? The system itself was pretty poor looking... childish, even). Now people get to enjoy the pee-their-pants scariness of Eternal Darkness without having to buy a Gamecube due to excellent backwards compatiblity choices on Nintendo's part.
- powlol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49For all of its faults, it had some spectacular first party titles. Sad to see it go, but the games now have a market with the wii.
So Good night my little purple friend. Good night. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47I liked my gamecube. Served me well.
- Nidis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42*****! For the love of god, it didn't fail. The _Dreamcast_ failed, and even it still has a strong niche following. I see Gamecubes everywhere, 4 people from my class at Uni have one, plus me which I still play regularly, and theres two in the local Cash Convertors right next to a stack of Playstations (all kinds). Just because it didn't get a new edition of some retarded sports games every year, get blamed for the violence of its generation or sell truckloads of half assed software, yeah, it must have failed.
- toxicgonzo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+47@theworm
You're right. The phrase "RIP" is an overstatement that could be used to describe other systems.
i.e. RIPS3 - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27thetaoofbill meet Virtual Boy. Virtual Boy, thetaoofbill. There, now you can do that whole "Worst. X. Ever." bit right.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25At the very least, the GameCube lives on with the Wii.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It's more officially dead today because Nintendo has stopped production of the system and new games are no longer being announced for it.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/gamecube-gets-vasectomy-no-longer-reproducing/ - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Wasent the gamecube declared dead by another tech website not to long ago and it also made it to the front page of digg? Who do I believe?!
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Is this implying that the Xbox 360 can play Xbox games? Cause my copies of Spiderman 2, Beyond Good and Evil and a few others seem to think differently.

Super Smash Bros. Melee will live on anyway, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be much, much better still.. ;)
Jimzip :D - sm4k, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@akaji
Yeah, it didn't sell because of the console's physical appearance. Because people don't consider games, controllers, or graphics AT ALL.
I will say that the Gamecube was my favorite console of the previous generation, and was absolutely more fun overall than the PS2 or Xbox was to me. I'm extremely glad that I can still play them with a wavebird on a Wii. - trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Dugg up for Eternal Darkness. I thought it was going to be a Resident Evil game the first time I put it in, boy was I in for a surprise.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Because the Nintendo wasn't a first generation system :P Some of us remember, "back in the day"... Pong, Intellivision, Atari... those were the first/second generation consoles... the Nintendo was the third generation... snes was fourth... n64 was fifth... and ... you guessed it, the gc was a sixth generation console, the wii is a seventh generation console.
Gosh dang young pups. It's the fourth generation of Nintendo Consoles, but in the grand scheme of consoles, it's sixth generation, just because you didn't have a product for the first two generations doesn't mean they didn't occur or get counted. - thelonious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8DVD playback was an option if you were willing to pay for it. I forked over the cash for Lik-Sang to send me a Panasonic Q years ago. It played all region GC games and all region DVDs. Not to mention it looked really nice with it's mirror finish and blue display!
http://www.emulationgalaxy.co.yu/images/systems/GC_PanasonicQ.jpg
It's on its last leg these days and doesn't get much play time against the 360 sitting next to it, but it served me well for years. - rushiku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"This time next year after the 3rd party support die once again...it will read "RIP Wii""
I know, right? I mean, developers are lining up at the door to give up their chance to make a game for the most popular system.
How many times I've overheard "what? make boatloads of money? why would we want to do that? we'd much rather make games for cool systems like PS3 so all 67 people that own one can experience the awesomeness that is our game, well, 61 if our forecasters got the 'capture 90% of the available market' right" I cannot say. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Is this implying that the Xbox 360 can play Xbox games? Cause my copies of Spiderman 2, Beyond Good and Evil and a few others seem to think differently."
and my copies of Mace Griffen Bounty Hunter, Myst IV, and Syberia also beg to differ. The wii plays all gamecube games, not just popular ones - BinaryFragger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7as per Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28sixth_generation%29 )
"sixth-generation era (sometimes referred to as the 128-bit era; see "Number of bits" below) refers to the computer and video games, video game consoles, and video game handhelds available at the turn of the 21st century.
Dreamcast
PlayStation 2
Xbox
GameCube" - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16N64 was a better system for it's time then Gamecube was.
N64 did something no other system could. It gave us 4 player support. It also gave us analog sticks. Perhaps there could have been more games that's true, but N64 introduced many new things in the industry that are still being used today, many of which have become standard. Gamecube didn't bring ***** to the table. All they did was take an N64 and give it better graphics and a better controller and say there you go people, there is your next generation. 2 systems already had web support and a 3rd was promising it. Nintendo didn't give a ***** though. They said we're all about gaming. We don't need that extra stuff like web support and DVD playback. Nintendo failed to learn from the mistakes of N64 and drove itself further into the ***** hole. I say good riddens to the Gamecube. I'm glad I can play the little blockbuster hits there were on the Gamecube on my Wii but I am also very glad to say goodbye to one of Nintendo's worst console generations. - museo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, now that what's the Gamecube should of looked like!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"maybe it's because its successor came out and plays gamecube games"
i mean, seriously, go try and find an Xbox (1) laying on the shelves at target - reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14I won't say it "sucked massively", but it was definitely very disappointing, especially compared to the excellent PS2/Xbox library.
I think there are about 10-15 games exclusive to the Gamecube, and all the rest are better on the Xbox/PS2. I can't even remember any worthwhile traditional racing games on it, while the PS2/Xbox had tons of those. Plus no FPS, disappointing sequels of N64 games (Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart, 1080, the Starfox games), and no online play made the cube a definite disappointment.
But the best game of that generation for me was without a doubt Metroid Prime. Truly outstanding game. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Silver? That means you waited to buy one. A true gamer would have smash bros the day it came out!
- antonio97b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Aw. Seems like last weekend that we were still having SSBM sessions with 3 other friends and it went on for hours.
Oh wait, that WAS last weekend.
GameCube, we will miss you. - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I thought it was going to be a Resident Evil game the first time I put it in, boy was I in for a surprise."
Same thing happened to me with RE4!(just kidding. I like RE4.) - Matri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=220
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can remember walking into BestBuy and seeing the Nintendo GameCube on display with the kiddies playing Luigi's Mansion. I also remember seeing the Sega Dreamcast there but I never bought one which now I can see was a smart move on my part. Instead, I bought a $300 keyboard (musical instrument) that I have no training on how to play... WTF. I'm a lost cause.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dunno about target but walmart has 4-5 last I was in. Microsoft desperately needs to get their emulation ***** fixed with new version of xbox coming out... It's killing me and costing them a lot of money from people with large xbox libraries.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I doubt that seriously, the Wii is engaging too many people who never played games before. In my family alone there are now 5 more people with consoles who never owned them before. That doesn't include the people who want them but haven't been able to get them yet either. I fully expect the Wii to outsell the dreamcast 2-3x over at least.
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I know you were trying to say that the Wii is "GC 1.5"
but... in a way you are kinda right...
the Wii has by far the best backward compatibility of all the current gen consoles
there is no reason to buy a GC if you can get your hands on a Wii
obviously, the only problem there is getting your hands on a Wii
I give you a red thumb though
the Wii isn't "GC 1.5" - jimbo100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5if the Wii plays GC games then theres no point in having both consoles.
thats why i traded in my GC and put my money down for a pre-order on the Wii.
Stopping production of gamecubes will make those people what want a gamecube go for the Wii instead which equals more profit for Nintendo.
there rant over......or is it.....? - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was going through a non gaming phase when it launched...then I was a broke for awhile
glad I waited...the platinum cube is/was sweet - Mtap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would have to say that I loved my gamecube. It might not be as Up To Date as my Xbox but, I cant think of any current game system with a better game collection. Wind Waker, Smash Bros Melee, Paper Mario, Resident evil 4, Zelda collectors edition, Metroid Prime, I could name so many others. Thats my main reason for wanting a Wii.
- Visnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GameCube = Failure?
Well if call the only console to make money off hardware and software right from launch. A failure I guess, yes, then it was a huge failure. Not like the Xbox that look close to 5 years to turn a profit off the hardware, or PS2 who also sold at a loss. Sure why be in business to make a profit? Go in business to be a market share leader, but loose money and have to subsidize your losses through other products. Nintendo has been around for over a hundred years, talk about red headed step child, I am so glad great companies like MS and Rootkit/propriatary buy only our ***** Sony kicked Nintendo's butt so bad that they had to be innovative, profitable, and create a loyal following. Nintendo's failure overwhelms me!
I am not a fanboy, I have the game cube, xbox, 3DO, Dreamcast, PS2, Wii, N64, Genisis, PSP and a bunch more. - digginestdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The NES was actually considered 3rd generation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_consoles
(BinaryFragger beat me to it) - Rblimas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4poor thing i hope they still make games for it
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9N64 was at least somewhat inovative, what with 4 player support, new control system, and better graphics. Gamecube had no inovative features. Everyone else was moving forward and gamecube was far far behind. No web support, no DVD support and failure to learn from the mistakes of N64 marked the death of the Gamecube YEARS before this article. I got rid of my gamecube years ago and haven't looked back since.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7The n64 was a little behind too. Regardless, I always preferred it over playstation. Cartridges will always be my fave.
- rarkai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"my little purple friend"
Uh, huh huh huh huh huh huh - Judge373, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really? I thought the Gamecube controller was the most comfortable of the last generation of controllers. The only controller that really came close in comfort was the X-Box S controller. People seem to like the PS2 controller, but for some reason it makes my hand cramp up.
A lot probably depends on the size and shape of your hands. - aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4>>They act like the gamecube was a complete failure that nobody liked. It was simply getting a little outdated.
Also Wii being backwards compatible allows GameCube production to end and allows folks that want to play GC games a way to play them. Personally, pretty happy that all my GC games will be playable years down the road. - danakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bollocks! I still play my Gamecube every day, and absolutely love it.
- Forever-Zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I never owned a Gamecube, but thanks to my Wii, I now have some great GC games. The actual Gamecube may be dead, but the games and controllers will still sell.
It's great to be able to enjoy some of the old Zelda games I never got to play because I didn't want a Gamecube. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is that really dead though? Hasent the dreamcast not had games announced for it for years at a time but is still living?! It just had 2 games announced for it in japan and many people concidered(sp?) it dead.
I'm sorry I just love the dreamcast so much..... - shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3> Why not have DVDs?
Why put a dvd player in? For the love of god, I've got THREE on my main tv already, and almost EVERYONE has one already. Sure its there for back up... but lets be real-- ps2 dvd player, sucks. Xbox dvd player requires special remote and dvd kit.. although it sucks less. Standard dvd player... works the best of all... and works with my universal remote.
Oh and... $20 at walmart for a dvd player. Yah... need another one in my console... maybe if they ever got the interface right for one. The wii would have been a prime target for a dvd player really with the wiimote and all... but I don't really miss not having it.
> Why no (good) online?
No excuse here, that one pisses me off.
> Why not market progressive scan more?
Because MOST people don't have it... it is prettier to be sure... but I know ONE person of about 40 I've been at their house in the last 2 years who have a tv capable of doing anything high def. Shrug. Most have nice big ancient real projection or alternately flat screen 32" tv's. - Domdogg123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, but Pikmin did not suck.
- AZNundercover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2[||||||||}=#~~ Pour some for me... and pour some for the Gamecube.
