- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21to the front page! we need programmers! woo hoo , looks awesome so far!
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17That's right, digg down a comment about the GP2X already having this game ported and playable.
After all, if it's homebrew on a Nintendo it's cool. If it's homebrew on a machine specifically built for homebrew using a fully GPL'd Linux core obviously it's not cool.
However, the touch-screen and wifi do make the DS quite attractive... portable ad-hoc multiplayer Quake would be nice. :) - ripter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I think more people need to hear about and use the GP2X
- Yackom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What's Nintendo's stance towards homebrew like this? I hear Sony does its best to stamp it out on the PSP.
- eleazar123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@cheneythedick
I don't think people are modding you down (which seems to have stopped atm) because you talked about the GP2X, but more that you are advertising for it, something that in my experience is looked down upon. It almost seems as if you are hijacking the first post, it's especially sneaky because you asked questions about the DS Lite, but the main purpose of your comment was obviously to advertise. Also, you guys might want to check this out... http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/max-media-dock-for-nintendo-ds-and-ds-lite-178814.php - zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Another video before that one shows gameplay.
- Opiate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's the initial demo that's running. Pretty impressive how much he's done so far. He claims he's getting 20-30fps but no sound or netcode. But it's only using one of the DS's processors the ARM9 .. there's still another ARM7 that he can use. He says the controls are similar to Metroid. I'm pretty sure it's playable just not done yet.
- Yackom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Aside from sueing lik-sang once for the gba devkits. Aside from that I dont think they have done much. If I recall correctly, I once even saw some pictures of some of the gba dev kids with one of their homebrew carts that they had signed by Miyamoto from a E3 after party last year or something.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They seem pretty nonchalant about it don't they? After all there are still people developing apps for the original Gameboy
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Greyhaven7: Can't wait to see your version, since clearly you are a great programmer and know what you're talking about.
- antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They don't care, because people are still buying games. You'd be insane to buy a DS and not buy games. PSP on the other hand...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6O_o, Wow, there's a wikipedia page for everything these days.
- Yackom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Its a dev build, lots of optimisations needed. Its a 67mhz machine with 4 megs of ram. Getting quake running on a pc with the similar specs would be alot slower. Textures shouldn't effect the perfomance.
- TimEllis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Forget Quake. Here are the two games I'm dying for on the DS:
Starcraft
Descent - appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sick! Quake is the best FPS ever, and the DS is badass... I'd say my favorite part is the Console display on the lower screen. Dugg! Strange though, the light doesn't go out in the nailgun room on E1M1 when he triggers the false wall w/ the grunt, otherwise everything looks identical to me!
- Yackom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg3GIfs9Ahc
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm wondering if we can expect textures in future releases, of if that would be too much to fit on a ds cart.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very nice! Even though I've played Quake emulated on everything but my toaster but I've been drooling over getting a DS Lite and have been losing sleep trying to get one early. Good to see there's an active homebrew scene.
- harryd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How does homebrew for the DS work (especially, how do you get 'in contact' with your DS) ? Does anyone have some nice links that explain the basics?
- czer323, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You fail to see the part where hackers tend to put doom and quake on anything they can get their hands on. Aka, Doom on an ATM machine, quake1 on the dreamcast, doom on my phone. And you're right, he gets massive points for being even able to code this on a system that shouldn't even be capable of playing it.
- guitarpro411, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its just the fact that you are too ignorant to understand that its not a final version yet.. so of course its not gonna run perfectly.
A few comments up someone mentioned quake on the gp2x and that doesn't even have a 3d processor in it. Its not a matter of hardware limits, its coding he has to perfect.
By the way, if you look back at the dreamcast emulation scene, they didn't even have a 100% working snes emulator on it. It would slow down and some games weren't compatible with it at all. Its about coding. - BSherrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well from what I've learned you have to get a special GBA cart that is programmable and has a Compact Flash slot.
- Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Video not available, mirror anywhere?
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm impressed because I can't even get Quake to run under Windows xp. I've tried and tried, and I know it can be done, but I can't find a site with good instructions. I have the original 1995 or whatever install disk.
Any help out there? - Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess I would think this was cooler if the PSP didn't already have it a few months ago, online and fully multi-player functional.
- msprout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not necessarily. The DS is fairly forgiving when it comes to what kind of flash media you use to run code on it. If you have a flash card from back in the GBA days, it'll work. Even the original Gameboy Movie Player will work. You've got a lot of choices - some ranging from about $30-$40 to $250, depending on what you want it to do.
- ZekeSulastin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Indeed - I use an SD-based cartridge =) It's just that the CF one ie the one being publicised at the moment ... you just need a second device to run unsigned DS code ...
Before that, they even had them with built-in flash memory, but IMHO they were HORRENDOUSLY overpriced for the amount of memory you got ... - andreas1999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A DS emulator on the PSP ? How the f**k would they do the touch screen? Also, nintendos stance on homebrew is the same as every other company: Don't do it, we want money.
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DS carts are "1 gigabit", or 128MB using a saner term, 128MB seems enough, especially considering the amount of ram the unit has (4MB)
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But on the other hand... Why not buy a PSP? PSP can play GBA games using a emulator and a DS emulator is in development.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1december 2002. GBA Quake
http://uk.gameboy.ign.com/articles/379/379591p1.html
and it was old news then. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Advert whore. Not even anything to do with the topic. And... block.
- alexkorova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure the Nintendo DS can handle Quake, check out other games for the system. This is just a start, he hasn't come far yet. I mean, so far, he is only using one of the processors.
- triforcer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i'm more excited for the scumm games, like day of the tentacle, on the ds. from what i've read they're almost done getting most of those games up 100%.
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1QuakeDS, with QuakeWorld support would be mind blowing. And mods?
Imagine TeamFortressDS! Obviously thinking far too ahead, but one can dream. - Dood77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im sorry to say this project is somewhat dead, no ones heard from this guy in a long time, there is however another project that is within a month of the first release, theres no website yet, but theres a pretty lengthly forum on http://forum.gbadev.org (under ds development, then "Quake, yeah") theres also another youtube video somewhere with a textured version running with 15-20 fps. (sorry i cant get accurate links, im on a school net.)
- glyph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very impressive to see, it sure is amazing what smart geeks are capable of. Hopefully they find a better use for the second screen, the console isn't exactly compelling.
- n0va, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cheneythedick
you can have sam and max hit the road on the ds, if that's what you mean. the porting of scummvm to the ds is already on the way. - Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I realize it's not compelte, and therefore not perfect.
Here's a question: What the most graphics-intensive game out for the DS? - Jagula, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use a dos emulator.
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net - n0va, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's nice to finally see some news on homebrew here, though DSQuake is not exactly the only thing. There's so much hombrew on both the DS and GBA (yes, the GBA is still alive). If anybody is interested, check out www.gbadev.org, www.dsdev.org, and www.devkitpro.org (Compiler for the ARM/PPC/PSP architectures)
- jdeluise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't bother with a dos emulator.
Get WinQuake (made by ID software)...everythings the same but it works in Windows..
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=121 - alexkorova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out Metroid Prime Hunters for a NDS FPS that looks better than Quake 1.
And remember, when Quake 1 was released you couldn't play it on 1600x1000, 8xAA, trilinear filtering and fluid animations. - james78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well of course nintendo will find a another use for the second screen why else would you be able to play games on top as well as bottom take mario kart ds for example you use the bottom screen for a map and top screen to see where you are going!
- nuvem, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I doubt the DS could handle Quake 3, the poly count in most DS games doesn't seem to be high enough. That said, he still has another processor in there (the ARM7), and I get the impression he just wanted to get it working first, so there's likely a lot of room for optimization.
- Jagula, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Not too impressive; most high end palms and ppcs can already handle quake 1 and 2.
The Axim can even handle Quake 3, at 25 f/s:

- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Happened on the PSP a long time ago. This version, however, won't have ***** controls! Looks great!
- Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0deleted.... sorry
