- nwagers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll buy this mainly because it will help undermine the Microsoft monopoly. It will promote more Linux game development if it is a successful product.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"is this the first quake for Linux?"
Just by taking a quick look on id Software's FTP server, you can find the following:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2/unix/
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/
They've supported non-Windows platforms for quite a while... - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1go id!
- SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally, I'll have something to play on this computer.
- Doomhammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t.
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id is one of the only PC developers that still use OpenGL rather than microsoft's DirectX... good news for mac users too... as doom 3 is already out on the mac.
- doggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this the first quake for Linux?
- Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome... I hope more devolopers will port not only to Linux, but to Mac as well, so I can finally switch!
- BETA7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its about time some good games got out for linux
- gnatinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is this news? I mean its cool and all... but carmack has always been a strong opensource supporter and all previous quake titles have had linux ports.
I would have expected it. - reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id has always been linux friendly so this is no big surpise but it still is cool. I can't wait.
- BenStockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, the previous Quakes have been ported.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like they followed suit every other time Quake was released for Linux?
- mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where have you guys been , id always releases their stuff on Linux.
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
- ChojinDSL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome! Allthough, Im not surprised actually.
- gaminggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not realy big new doom 3 engine is for linux quake4 uses doome 3's engine (but I think its a litle modded) and ID always have supported linux not realy that big people.
- next, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Allow me to be the first to say...KICK ASS!
My Linux love makes me mostly stick to consoles now. - dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is this news? Because this is a major release and if other developers see this they could follow suit. If you read the story this is not just a port - they are saying they wil release it two weeks after the Windows release.
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dignan2681:
Just like other developers followed suit after the releases of Quake 2 and 3 and Doom 3 for Linux? - Ir0n_mE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hopefully this helps more developers to follow with this.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im not even a gamer (does nethack count?) and im excited for this
- janascii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, now I can do something other than browse, talk to people, and email on my linux boot.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, not that, 1, I'm looking forward to Quake4 (I never really liked that sort of shooters, but that's just me, though I did play Q3A a hell of alot for a while), or 2, primarily run Linux
But, it's f***ing great that iD are 1, releasing the game for Linux (It's only fair, games for PC, and Mac, but linux tends to be overlooked), 2, using OpenGL (Having talked to someone over a forum about it, I found out that using OpenGL is a far far better idea, primarily because the API isn't changed every year, and you can just bolt in new shaders etc etc etc, as nothing much changes)
Anyway, hurray for iD!
- Ben - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awww the Linux gamers get thrown a bone. How cute.
- wizzat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously... "released for linux" isn't exactly news - if it gets sold in the store for Linux.. now that's news. Neat article, but nothing groundbreaking unless they try to sell it for Linux.
- nihilism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dope.
(To the dude who was excited about kde4, dude, use gnome, kde looks like a fischer price toy) - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's cool because it's Linux...?
- pdaphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great news and great digg. Thanks.
- sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no such thing as a linux gamer. There are linux users who like to game but thats about it. Personally I'm glad I only use linux now as I've cut my gaming time down significantly and now basically just play Doom 3 and playstation games on emulator. I'll take GT2 with anti-alising over any modern PC racer anyday.
- *narf*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doom3 was awesome on linux, I'll happily pay for quake4!
at least OpenGL is cross platform so mac-heads may get a port as well. A game or an app shouldn't have to tie itself down to one platform or O/S - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone suprised about this?
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0this is a good thing, specially in the wider view (more nVidia support, the coming KDE 4).
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if only one of the damned magazines that review these things would run the Linux version and the Windows version on two identical systems, with the difference of course being the OS.
I doubt it happens though. - F10x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
- xafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stop bitching, this is *news*. Information previously unconfirmed before. This is far more worthy of the front page then some random link to something released in 2003.
- Rage_Elite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(ball starts rolling here)
- fu86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More info's (German)
http://polska.merseine.nu/h2006/space/start - BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we know, moron, all of the previous quake games have made it to linux after being released and since then the id games have been developed on linux alongside windows, duh.. this is not a surprise and not news.
all praise id and the carmack for this small amount of the market just because they feel it's the right thing to do to make their programs just that much more outstanding. - f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't wait to see how this will work out. If enough people get it for linux I'm sure others will follow. It would be nice to see other main stream games sold for linux.
- Cataclysm_J, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'll do it and get back to you, oh man i cant wait to test the real power of this machine!
- miknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's news because id is not the primary developer for this game. Raven software (http://www.ravensoft.com/) are the guys behind it. I think this will be their first Linux release.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0gnome is for ugly midgets.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0unreal tournament is linux friendly. ID has never really been.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ID haven't made a good game in ages.
- Rage_Elite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0If you used Windows, you wouldn't have to worry about game compatability issues. At least, not as much as when using linux...lmao!!!!!!!! Microsoft owns....rofl!!!
