Quake (Game) Family Tree
en.wikipedia.org — A Wikipedia chart of the video and computer game series, Quake (mostly its engine), and its many descendants unto the nth generation. From http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/12/quake-family-tree.html ...
- 1938 diggs
- digg it
- joey368, on 04/14/2008, -9/+196Quakers have too much time on their hands.
- h4mx0r, on 04/14/2008, -2/+183Yeah, well if they didn't, we wouldn't have good oatmeal.
- mrelusive, on 04/14/2008, -1/+27Or motor oil.
- gooter, on 04/14/2008, -11/+4diabeetus??
- themastersb, on 04/14/2008, -0/+15I'm scared of the oatmeal man
- Mootabolife, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4But.. he's smiling and jolly!
- drizzlelicious, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3I can't help but think it's shampoo that's coming out of his hat
- cello, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3Excellent work, h4mx0r.
- fhernand, on 04/14/2008, -2/+15with all that time, none of them has created an EarthQuake :-(
- neotrantor, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9epic.
- glinsvad, on 04/14/2008, -2/+5They did get BeefQuake down though
- reichg, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3where is quake tf that was the best mutiplayer and they have alot of stupid mods on there for quake
- MacHarborGuy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4You will notice that this chart only shows mods to the source code of the game itself, not general game mods. Game mods would include Team Fortress, Threewave CTF, Painkeep, Headhunters, etc. What this chart shows is all of the engine mods that came about because of the source code to the executable itself. That is why Half Life and Sin are shown, as well as GLQuake and QuakeWorld. Those were far more than a simple mod to the game code (back in Quake 1 that was QuakeC).
- Bobo44, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3I see what you did there..
- JusticeFriend, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2No Crysis?
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Crysis is not related to Quake in any way. It uses it's own engine.
- Vicpop, on 04/15/2008, -0/+0I'm actually pretty sure coders and level designers use this map to learn what the engine they're working for came from. Also sometimes it helps to mess around with some of the older stuff because the newer engine versions work pretty much the same way.
- satori3000, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1the sad thing is that this is incomplete and misleading. Quake should feed HL directly as it used the quake engine... Doom should be listed with a direct connection to Castle wolfenstein which should link to RTCW and other things... it's half assed.
- h4mx0r, on 04/14/2008, -2/+183Yeah, well if they didn't, we wouldn't have good oatmeal.
- eastlondoner, on 04/14/2008, -7/+11I tried playing some QWDM the other day. Was able to get arsehole reamed fairly quick. Found about 4 servers still online in Europe.
- Zaggynl, on 04/14/2008, -0/+19arsehole reamed? what's wrong with fragged? :/
- lytan, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10It has a different meaning. You can be the arsehole-reamer and still get fragged, for example. So now you know.
- geobay, on 04/14/2008, -0/+19Knowing is half the battle. The other half is lube.
- lytan, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10It has a different meaning. You can be the arsehole-reamer and still get fragged, for example. So now you know.
- roodammy44, on 04/14/2008, -2/+4barrysworld ftw :-)
I was playing that back in good old 1998
- Zaggynl, on 04/14/2008, -0/+19arsehole reamed? what's wrong with fragged? :/
- markiemarke, on 04/14/2008, -0/+20there are some mods/tcs i was quite fond of that we're excluded from that tree :(
- dasmonki, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4like threewave?
- markiemarke, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4yes, also weapons factory arena and urban terror
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1But neither are engine mods. That's what the chart is about or else you would see Painkeep, Team Fortress, Zoids and Threewave CTF, Excessive Quake, and Headhunters all up there too.
- markiemarke, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4yes, also weapons factory arena and urban terror
- Arcesius, on 04/14/2008, -2/+7Rocket Arena FTW!!
- acdcfanbill, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Plus my tiny nitpick would be to place the Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy under Soldier of Fortune II and not ST Elite Force.
- TrevorBradley, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I didn't see ttyquake on the list.
http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/ttyquake/ - Gudlyf, on 04/14/2008, -0/+17Uh, TeamFortress anyone?
- Revenuer, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4team fortress FTW
- SteeleJK, on 04/14/2008, -11/+4Why are people looking for Team Fortress? Can you find Half-life? ....Ah there you go! And can you tell me what game uses the Half-life engine? Yes, very good, Team Fortress.
It's the same reason they don't have, Half-life2, Counterstrike Source, and Day of Defeat; those games use the Source engine.- Biznarie, on 04/14/2008, -1/+12There talking about the original team fortress which was a quake 1 mod.
- Gudlyf, on 04/14/2008, -0/+11Wow, what a real wiseass comment from someone completely unfamiliar with the origins of Team Fortress. TF started with QuakeWorld. Try speaking up when you know WTF you're talking about.
- Lanlost, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I've seen this happen a lot recently.
The worst part of it is, the places that I've seen it happen are in PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS FOR TF2.
They all talk about Team Fortress: Classic like it was the first one.
Not only that, when people say that TF1 was a Quake 1 mod it, sadly, sounds like it was less complex than TFC. Team Fortress: Classic was basically just a prettier version of the original TF. - ChileanGoD, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Learn your gaming history
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Team Fortress was a Quakeworld mod. Not a Halflife mod.
- ChileanGoD, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2That grappling hook was legendary.
- defaultusername, on 04/14/2008, -1/+5there are some full-fledged games missing. Call of Duty?
- xevidentx, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yup, COD was based on the Q3 engine. probably one of the more successful ones that stemmed from quake engine
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yes but it used the stock Q3A engine with only the user interface changed. Technically COD is only a mod.
- xevidentx, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1isn't this what this chart is all about?
- xevidentx, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Yup, COD was based on the Q3 engine. probably one of the more successful ones that stemmed from quake engine
- erydan, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Alot missing from this tree, most notably MOH and COD
- dissurmom, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1Quakesux, is that on there?
- azimir, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Natural Selection lives on!
- bonedead, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I saw Q2 Paintball and almost shed a tear, that game ruled so much.
- Lanlost, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I seem to (mostly) be alone when I say that Quake 2 had the greatest mods of all time.
Quake 1 started the explosion of real mods (with Quake C being available). One's that weren't just texture and sound changes, etc. By the end of Quake's era mods started getting way, way more complex.
When Quake 2s server side source was released, all hell broke loose. You had the most creative and highest number of quality mods released out of any game before and after.
Paintball, Gloom, LMCTF was the greatest CTF mod EVER because of the maps, Action Quake, Q2 Pong.. ugh... *tear* so many more.- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Q2 Pong rocked and so did Action Quake but the Q2 engine had issues that made it die as soon as Q3A was released. This mainly due to the fact that even though it was the most advanced game engine of it's time it just looked like crap. Well not crap, just dull and lifeless. And it was Q3A that would really make the mods. Urban Terror and Padworld, (among others) would really start altering the engines to where they were hardly recognizable in the first place and Painkeep Arena represented the first mod that toyed around with the physics engine, allowing Tarzan styled swinging through levels and the ability to grab objects from afar and out of other players hands.
- Lanlost, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I seem to (mostly) be alone when I say that Quake 2 had the greatest mods of all time.
- dasmonki, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4like threewave?
- Purkake, on 04/14/2008, -50/+1First page with 30 diggs? lol
- Harabeck, on 04/14/2008, -1/+4How fast the diggs are accumulated also factors in.
- Spor, on 04/14/2008, -3/+11Why do people care so much about this? It certainly isn't comment worthy.
- chazuk, on 04/14/2008, -2/+6It is bury worthy tho! :)
- mryokai, on 04/14/2008, -4/+85It's cool when you see the degrees of separation of old games. Like, the source engine was built on the Quake engine mainly and now Half Life is like the overachiving son to Quakes cranky dad.
- xerosawyer, on 04/14/2008, -46/+3half life 2 sucks lmao!
- AlgnPelotudo, on 04/14/2008, -6/+3LMAO TSE TUNG
- Bologner, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Anyone have a crowbar I could borrow for, like, 2 seconds?
- xerosawyer, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1lmao raged hl2 nerds
- Jektal, on 04/14/2008, -0/+19The Half-Life engine was built on the Quake engine, while the Source engine was built from the ground up, albeit on the Quake engine principles (additive rather than subtractive (Unreal) levels)
- Pake, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3The Source engine wasn't exactly built from the ground up. There is still a lot of Quake code in the engine.
- pixelate, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_engine#Origins
- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -5/+5Just because the origional HL was made on the Quake engine does not mean the Source was based on it as well. The Source engine was made from the ground up for HL2. It's only connection to the Quake engine is that it was used for the sequel for HL.
- sexybobo, on 04/14/2008, -2/+2still uses some of the cheat codes from Quake
- billski, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1i believe i saw it branched from HL, not from quake
rtfa - Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Hl was based on the Q2 engine, not Quake 1.
- ZenMojo, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7I think the (spurious) reasoning is that Half-Life spawned source and Quake spawned Half-Life.
- oMeSSiaHo, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1The editor for Quake levels (world craft) is basically the same editor for Halflife2 (Hammer). Granted their are differences now but the brush work (3d stuff) is the same.
- PhireN, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1The quake engine was used as a starting point for the source engine, lots of things were added, and lots of things were replaced as time went by.
These days, very little (if any) of the quake source code is left, but the original code was there at the start, so it is derived from quake.- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1Actually most of the Quake 1 physics engine still exists in the Source engine (at least in TF2). In fact TF2 plays like it uses Q1 physics with some ragdoll thrown in. Makes the game real fun if you ask me.
- xerosawyer, on 04/14/2008, -46/+3half life 2 sucks lmao!
- MrESaulved, on 04/14/2008, -2/+62Jedi Academy FTW!
/play it- antdude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9We need more of these games. Come on, LucasArts!
- tRANIS, on 04/14/2008, -0/+8lol that was the best lightsaber action for the SW genre ever.
to bad you could beat it in like 4 hours.- houndeyex, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3That's where the multiplayer comes in. Many a fun LAN was had with that game. Looking back I realize the "class" system it had is a lot like current day Call of Duty 4, only you pick your force powers instead of perks and weapons.
- neotrantor, on 04/14/2008, -3/+1pugs 4 evar
- Godmil, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10That game was way better than I expected it to be. There was nothing like leveling up Force Lightning to full then just charging into rooms with bolts flying from both hands, enemies pinned against walls... It was impossible to leave the dark side after all that fun.
- IEatHamburgers, on 04/14/2008, -2/+2lol - This tree shows the two Jedi Knight games were branched off of Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.
What say you, Star Wars nerds?- nbcaffeine, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Star wars exists only on the holodeck
- Ockniel, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1They looked at star trek and realized they could do better.
- nbcaffeine, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Star wars exists only on the holodeck
- Kakemonster, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4If you loved the original your gonna love Move Battles II.
It's a mod which has all the characters from the SW series and many scenes.
http://www.moviebattles.com/ - sport11rocks, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2LucasArts needs to put the whole Jedi Knight series on Steam.
- Ockniel, on 04/15/2008, -2/+1Nobody needs to put anything on steam ever again
- wankelrotary, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I've been playing through that again recently. Such fun.
- kmb1794, on 04/14/2008, -1/+24Dugg for Action Quake 2 but almost buried since there's no mention of LithiumQ2.
- aceonline, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Yes, Lithium was a big part of Q2 and should have been included.
- danwallace, on 04/14/2008, -0/+10Action Quake 2 was ***** awesome. Strafe jumping across buildings in Urban ftw.
- hexydes, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3Psh, Urban's jumps were easy. Now Teamjungle, that took some practice...
- markiemarke, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3being a master of teamjungle jumps led to one half of an easy win :)
- Kickboy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Psh. Teamjungle got old quick. Most of the jumps were easy, too. I liked the whole urban series (1-4).
I miss going ninja status on temple and doing knife/slip or hc/slip combos :P - nofrickenway, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1The one thing I really miss from AQ2 were the KNIVES! Timing the throws and retrieving added a nice, original, touch that you just don't see any more.
Anyone download the MOD to play through the regular game in AQ2 mode?
- hexydes, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3Psh, Urban's jumps were easy. Now Teamjungle, that took some practice...
- antdude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4AQ2 rocked. I used to host a server named "Ant's Action Quake2 Movie Set". Did any of you Diggers play on it? It was in the late 90s.
- EricAnderton, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I played a *lot* of AQ back in 1998/1999. Typically logged in as "Nightcrawler". I wasn't awesome by any stretch, but I just loved how the combat had such drama and balance to it.
Your server name rings a bell though. Thanks for the good times.- antdude, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I think I remember your name. Maybe that was X-Men movies I am confusing with. ;)
- kmb1794, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Totally. My AQ2 name was Footsteps (I was a slippers and handcannon fan). That sounds familiar. I would like to see the same game play in a modern game. I played AHL for a long time after it came out but it wasn't the same.
- antdude, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1I could not get into that and Reaction Quake3 :(
- stockjones, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3I remember playing on your server back in the day. AQ2 was frickin awesome then I discovered Tribes. Man that was the year of great MP gameplay.
- EricAnderton, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Oh man, Tribes. What a time-sink that was. Good times.
- antdude, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1What was your nickname back then? Stockjones? I don't remember that one. Oh well!
- EricAnderton, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I played a *lot* of AQ back in 1998/1999. Typically logged in as "Nightcrawler". I wasn't awesome by any stretch, but I just loved how the combat had such drama and balance to it.
- mykotron, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Lithium was the largest mod for Quake 2. It was more popular than Quake 2s default, baseq2. Kinda disgraceful that it's not on that list.
- Slackdragon, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Lithium was my mod of choice. Nothing beat railing someone mid-air while hooking through their gibs and catching thier falling RL all in one fell swoop.
- petemcfraser, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2It's a wiki, so couldn't you just add it?
- Kickboy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2AQ2 Rocks. I still play it on occasion.
And I run a AQ2 Stats website: http://aq2stats.com - stockjones, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Dugg because you mentioned Action Quake 2
- samstoned, on 04/14/2008, -10/+0joey368 you are 100% right! Quake is more than a game, it's a life-style!
- TobiasParker, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7See what i did here?
- Scira, on 04/14/2008, -1/+3no
- HolyChimp, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I see what you did there.
- monospaced, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I did it too.
- Xchus, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0...in the butt
- ZeRux, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Are you too stupid to use the reply button, or is it just your vanity?
- TobiasParker, on 04/14/2008, -0/+7See what i did here?
- h4mx0r, on 04/14/2008, -5/+20The Source Engine isn't so much part of the family tree except that it was... Well inspired (I suppose) by Half-Life, which uses a modified quake2 engine. The Source Engine was made from the ground up I think, and it's only relation is that it was made for Half-Life 2, which is the sequel to Half-Life, which is the actual relation to Quake.
- rodeosmurf, on 04/14/2008, -1/+21You're right, the Source engine wasn't based on any id product. However, GoldSrc, the Half Life engine, was modified from the Quake 1 engine, not Quake 2.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoldSrc- mancat, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Some of you may remember when the AMD K6-2 was still in wide use, and a number of games needed to be patched to use 3DNow! I was able to use the 3DNow!-patched Quake2 3dfx renderer with HL2 for a really long time, until I finally got rid of that rig. HL2 was almost unplayable on a K6-2/3dfx combo without it.
It obviously had "enough" Quake2 code in it if I was able to use the Quake2 renderer libraries with it.
Looking back, I can't believe I was able to put up with playing HL2 on a Voodoo2. - Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2The Wiki is wrong and even says so when it mentions the Q2 renderer is used to allow direct 3D access.
The renderer is considered the primary engine so basically HL was Q2 rendered with legacy Q1 code in it. Just because HL started on Q1 code it doesn't mean they finished with Q1 code. The games renderer is the Q2 engine so therefore Hl is based on the Q2 engine.
- mancat, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Some of you may remember when the AMD K6-2 was still in wide use, and a number of games needed to be patched to use 3DNow! I was able to use the 3DNow!-patched Quake2 3dfx renderer with HL2 for a really long time, until I finally got rid of that rig. HL2 was almost unplayable on a K6-2/3dfx combo without it.
- Godmil, on 04/14/2008, -2/+20I'm pretty sure when the HL2 source got leaked there was some legacy Quake1 stuff still in there.
- rodeosmurf, on 04/14/2008, -1/+21You're right, the Source engine wasn't based on any id product. However, GoldSrc, the Half Life engine, was modified from the Quake 1 engine, not Quake 2.
- alex7575, on 04/14/2008, -15/+3First page with only 60 diggs and 10 comments???
Am I doing this right?- gooter, on 04/14/2008, -2/+5being an idiot? Ya, you're on the right track
- alex7575, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Considering your very brief comment history, I fail to see how you feel entitled to call anyone an idiot...
Seriously, if you can't see sarcasm unless there's a tag beneath a comment, refrain from calling others idiots.
- alex7575, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Considering your very brief comment history, I fail to see how you feel entitled to call anyone an idiot...
- vondrak, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5You're lacking that feeling of entitlement by not mentioning your stories that have not been made popular. Try posting a link of your own submit of this article. And include a few internet acronyms suck as wtf or bfd. Feel free to throw a digg sucks in there too, and state that this website is dead and you're leaving.
- gooter, on 04/14/2008, -2/+5being an idiot? Ya, you're on the right track
- Marglar, on 04/14/2008, -8/+6I don't get it, they show both mods *and* games created off of the engines? why bother showing mods at all if you aren't going to list out at least all of the popular ones?... they are missing a ton of good ones for q2/q3.
also, lol @ doom 3 and quake 4 engines not being utilized at all, ID really went in the wrong direction with them imo..- cubedcompanies, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8Seeing that Prey is not listed, then it's a reasonable assumption to conclude this chart is dated.
- Narishma, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6The Doom 3 engine (id tech 4) is used in Doom 3, Quake 4, Prey and ETQW.
- verkon, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1And it looks like Valves source engine went down the drain as well.
- cubedcompanies, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8Seeing that Prey is not listed, then it's a reasonable assumption to conclude this chart is dated.
- NiGHTSChao, on 04/14/2008, -3/+41I saw American McGee's Alice and went ^___________^
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13That game was truly a work of art.
- NiGHTSChao, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I agree, I just wish Scrapland, BadDayLA and GRIMM would be a work of art as well
Scrapland was fun but way to linear
BadDayLA was just..horrible..
GRIMM looks like *****...I dont like it.. - antdude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Need a sequel!! Imagine the game on the newer engines!
- cubedcompanies, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2+1, American McGee Alice was brilliant and way ahead of it's time.
- NiGHTSChao, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I agree, I just wish Scrapland, BadDayLA and GRIMM would be a work of art as well
- BevansDesign, on 04/14/2008, -2/+17Your eyes turned into triangles and you slashed yourself across the face?
- Tyrghast, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Good game, but when i saw Elite Force and Jedi Outcast I splooged on the keyboard.
- metalsiren, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1they're making a movie with sarah michelle gellar.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0466663/- carpespasm, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Hmm... As always with movies derived from other sources of generally unknown origins to most people, this will likely wind up a terrible stinker or a cult hit.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/14/2008, -1/+13That game was truly a work of art.
- bizarrorollins, on 04/14/2008, -1/+65umm.. no mention of team fortress, megaTF, or teamfortress classic?
- 40hands, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Seriously. I was looking all around for Quake TF. Such good times.
- Tyrghast, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1I dont think freeware mods are included in this diagram, just retail games.
- limak, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1than where is Quake 3 Team Arena?
- bovilexia, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1no kidding where is megaTF?
- Heavypettingzoo, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1TF>TFC>TF2 which now owns my life.
- dbacker, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Ahh such great times.
Traa-[CE]
- racco, on 04/14/2008, -9/+3bitch bitch bitch moan moan moan FTW!!

- gdstudios, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8They seem to have forgotten to include the entire EA Medal of Honor series. I would think that would be included before some of the obscure RTCW hacks.
- sexybobo, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Only RTCW on there is Enemy territory unless i miss something.
Also RTCW Bani mod goldrush FTW - savethehobos, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0I was wondering if someone was going to say something about the MoH series. Really it was just AA, SH, and the other that I cant really remember right now. Those were complete copies of the q3 engine. No mention of Unreal Tournament or any of the Unreal series period. Also I dont know if Doom 3 would consitute falling under the q3 engine. I mean there are aspects of it, but nothing that would be signifigant.

- MrSketch, on 04/14/2008, -0/+41You might be a geek if you looked at the 'tree' and thought "That's not a tree, it contains a cycle (Quake-QuakeWorld-GLQUAKE-Quake), therefore it's a graph."
- netherneedle74, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I don't think that's why I'm a geek.
- Heavypettingzoo, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1well, I'm not like that, but I'm glad there are people like you out there.
- kgorczyn, on 04/14/2008, -0/+14I loved Quake back in the day. I was an addict for a while... DM3 and DM6 for life! And then I got my Diamond Monster 4MB 3D Card.... and ran timedemos on my P166 MMX.....wow those were the days....

- skipdog172, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Kingpin was awesome.
- lordzelo, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Loved Kingpin. Its one of those great games that never got much coverage. Although if you were to go back and play it now, most people would hate it because the graphics are so far gone.
- postalblowfish7, on 04/14/2008, -0/+16QUAKE changed everything. I still remember holding the demo disc on the bus home in middle school, just drooling over the cardboard sleeve with that big Q on it...
- eyepower, on 04/14/2008, -10/+0Quake changed nothing. It just showed up fashionably late to the party. You kids don't know your roots.
- postalblowfish7, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6wtf are you talking about? 3D mobs, items, and weapons? QUAKE was the first true 3D shooter, with badass trent reznor sound effects and gothic horror setting to boot. it was a milestone that affected just about any PC gamer of my generation. kids? you sound more like a kid who was born into the world of fast paced 3D acceleration - I was raised on NES side scrollers.
If you don't think the release of QUAKE changed everything, you probably weren't there. - Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Quake is considered the largest single leap in video gaming technology ever. It used hardware rendered video for the first time. It used UDP for multiplayer gaming for the first time ever. The first client prediction was used in Quake as was the first surround sound and hardware based sound rendering. It was the first openly moddable game. It was also the first game to include professional sound editing (ala Trent Reznor), colored lighting, and the game introduced opengl to the world. It was the first attempt to realistically reproduce gravity. And finally GLquake was the first engine to use both dynamic and colored lighting (both on a limited scale though). Eyepower, learn your history. You failed that test.

- eyepower, on 04/14/2008, -10/+0Quake changed nothing. It just showed up fashionably late to the party. You kids don't know your roots.
- Galaeron, on 04/14/2008, -5/+28EPIC FAIL - Where the hell is the original team fortress?
- Grachk, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9exactly. this tree is pretty lame without team fortress anywhere.
- MacHarborGuy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2It doesn't include the original Team Fortress because that wasn't an engine mod, which the chart shows. It was a general game mod made with QuakeC. You notice that Threewave CTF, Headhunters and Painkeep are also not listed. The only mods listed were overhauled engine mods. Half Life, GLQuake, WinQuake, QuakeWorld, Sin, etc.
- Grachk, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9exactly. this tree is pretty lame without team fortress anywhere.
- oscenester, on 04/14/2008, -0/+12lots of stuff missing.
- antdude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1You can make your own and add the missing parts. I am sure there are too many to show.
- Dwebtron, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1cod1
- daveisfera, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9It's interesting to see how the ID engines have been used less and less over time.
- hexydes, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Agreed. It was amazing how there were hundreds of mods for Quake II, tens of mods for Quake III, maybe a few mods for Doom III, and then...that's pretty much it.
- CeeJayDK, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5This is not a map of Quake games and mods , but a map of Quake-derived 3D-engines.
If a game or map does not use it's own engine , it does not appear on the list.
The reason why there are many engines based on Quake is that , it was the first to be released as open-source.
Since then the Quake 2 and later the Quake 3 engine have also been open-sourced (this list is not up-to-date , as several engines based off Quake 3 are not in the list)
Doom 3 and Quake 4 are not open-source .. yet - SaxxonPike, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2That's because they're all moving to Unreal tech. (and for good reason, I might add.) iD can't expect to sell engines just from their name anymore. They aren't the only ones doing quality 3D engines these days unlike times past.
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2That is because contrary to popular belief id software is NOT a gaming company. They are a technology development company. They just happen to produce graphics engines and games are the best medium for the engines. Every Video game out there today pays some homage (and royalties) to id because virtually every rendering technology used in every game produced past 1998 uses technology developed by id software. They invented opengl, and every piece of eye candy that comes with it and are more responsible for the advancement of Direct 3d than Microsoft themselves. Even Oblivion and Crysis has id technology in it, as does Sims 2, Ratchet and Clank, Hellgate, and even Flight Simulator X. Every video game that uses a 3d card has technology developed at id. No exceptions. Same with online playing. All online gaming today uses the UDP protocol as do most P2P apps. Thank id for that.
- daveisfera, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately they don't get a red cent for someone else making a game based on the "ideas from their technology", so I fail to see your point.
- lytan, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Warsow (QFusion) is missing. Tut!
- ryansimbalist, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1Ya but its Warsow so it pretty much has to be left out.
- HammerOfHope, on 04/14/2008, -7/+1Red Orchestra also tragically missing.
- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Wasn't Red Orchestra originally made on the Unreal 2 engine? Unless the mod was ported from Q3 or something.
- Seemefearme, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Correct, it is an Unreal 2 game.
- ryansimbalist, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Red Orchestra is definitely Unreal. (It says it on the back of the box)
- HammerOfHope, on 04/14/2008, -0/+0I take it back =(
- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Wasn't Red Orchestra originally made on the Unreal 2 engine? Unless the mod was ported from Q3 or something.
- ScottC94, on 04/14/2008, -18/+1You are ***** lame. First of all, I'm blaming you for creating this even if you didn't, and second, you are lame for posting it. Get a job, hippie. And Doom is better and precedes Quake anyway.
- jwk4heels, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Both are made by id, so it's not like they give a ***** either way. If one flopped they could fall back on the other, but fortunately both were amazing and did great on the market. You're ***** lame.
- Amiga500, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1Doom did not use a true 3D polygon engine.
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1It didn't use any polygons. It manipulated texture sprites to appear 3d.
- Amiga500, on 04/16/2008, -1/+1A sprite is an image element that's separate from the background. Besides, the PC never had sprites.
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1It didn't use any polygons. It manipulated texture sprites to appear 3d.
- ortucis, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5Those who haven't ever played Quake 2 (SP) should give it a try with mods enhancing visuals and gameplay > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4iJY-oH26Y
Can't wait for Rage (no other game currently makes me wanna upgrade my 6800GS card). - webbles, on 04/14/2008, -0/+24they forgot a few...
one big one i see missing is Call of Duty...- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I was just about to mention that. That is a big one to miss considering it was probably the last major game to use the Q3 engine.
- Seemefearme, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4Was wondering the same.
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Because COD doesn't mod the engine at all. COD merely modded the graphics, gameplay, and UI. There are no engine enhancements or modifications in COD what-so-ever.
- houndeyex, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Saw that one too. I didn't know Half-Life was based of Quake either. It was my understanding that they had written their own engine.
- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+4I was just about to mention that. That is a big one to miss considering it was probably the last major game to use the Q3 engine.
- protomor, on 04/14/2008, -7/+1Ah quake, the first real 3d fps. I played with your engine code and your brother Q2's engine code. Q3's engine code was a mess IMO. I didn't know half life was based off of quake. Makes me happy I still play a derivative of it now a days. I never got around to playing Q4, any good?
I made my own engine mod back in the day. Protosphere. Dont think you can find it anywhere on the net tho. It was basically CS mixed with TFC and a few other FPS'. Man I'm unoriginal.- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -3/+2Quake4 was amazing.
- houndeyex, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2Really, 'cause I thought it sucked.
- subliminalurge, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't say that it was either amazing or that it sucked. I'd say it was mediocre.
It held my interest for awhile, but I finally ended up looking up the cheat code for god mode so I could just stroll through, see the levels, and be done with it. Never had even a hint of desire to reinstall it.
That said, I still have Q2 installed on my computer to this day.
- subliminalurge, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't say that it was either amazing or that it sucked. I'd say it was mediocre.

Would like to see this tree expanded! - lordzelo, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Quake 4 wasn't half bad. Graphics were cool and I though the story wasn't too bad either. It was a good game to play at least once through.
- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Q4 multiplayer rocks but people don't like that lightning fast MP anymore. The single player wasn't great though.
- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -3/+2Quake4 was amazing.
- neuromorph, on 04/14/2008, -4/+2Where's my Wolfenstein or Duke Nuke Em' family Tree. Quakers seem to forget where they come from
- antdude, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3Go make one!
- l0tharnt, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1The graph was based on what came of Quake...not where Quake came from.

- kent1146, on 04/14/2008, -6/+1Where's Doom and Wolfenstein 3d on here? We need to go back farther than this.
- ryansimbalist, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1I believe this tree is of games utilizing the Quake Engine...(Your Wrong)
- eyepower, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1So if you were making a family tree you would only list your descendants? Oh and BTW it's YOU'RE wrong not "your wrong"
- houndeyex, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Isn't Doom pre-Quake... Doom 3 is on there though.
- AlgnPelotudo, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1WOULD YOU KINDLY read the description?
Description Family tree of fork of Quake engine (tree version 11)
its a list of derivatives from the engine (btw, the digg title is wrong, should have said 'quake (engine) family tree'
and it was made form scratch AFAIK, so no doom nor wolfenstein nor nightmare3d...
- ryansimbalist, on 04/14/2008, -1/+1I believe this tree is of games utilizing the Quake Engine...(Your Wrong)
- thegas, on 04/14/2008, -3/+3Where is ETQW (aka ID Tech 4.5) ????
- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2It's on there.
- l0tharnt, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1QW for RTCW is there, but not the ET based off of Quake 4/2
- CeeJayDK, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1No it is not.
You're confusing Return to Castle Wolfenstein : Enemy Territory with Enemy Territory : Quake Wars.
Quake Wars is based off the Quake 4 engine.- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1I think I read it wrong. My mistake.
- l0tharnt, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1As someone mentioned, this list looks dated so ET:QW may not of been announced yet.
- hadak, on 04/14/2008, -1/+2It's on there.
- clesch, on 04/14/2008, -4/+5Quake 3 is still my favorite multiplayer-fps of all the time. The Openarena project allows you to play Q3A without a valid CD-Key, you just need the baseq3.pak from an original CD: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenArena
With that being said, I'm surprised that CoD 1-4 isn't represented on the graph. CoD 4 looks absolutely mind-blowing if you consider that it has it's roots in the Q3A Engine.- Jektal, on 04/14/2008, -3/+4I'm pretty sure you could find a valid copy of Quake3 for $10 or less, if you like it so much, pay for it.
- clesch, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I own two copies of it, thank you very much.
- revjustin2, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1You're welcome.
- Lazydriver, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1I don't see a reason why people should pay for a game that hasn't been patched in six years (or updated), and is being sold on Steam for $20.
Pirate away, captain.
- clesch, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I own two copies of it, thank you very much.
- treedude, on 04/14/2008, -2/+1The original CoD was created using the Q3 engine. However 2-4 were built from the ground up.
- Beem, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1COD2 and COD4 are not built from the ground up, they basically changed the rendering path to direct3d from OpenGL. All the console commands are pretty much the same as in Q3 and vCOD.
- CeeJayDK, on 04/14/2008, -0/+3ID Software is working on releasing Quake 3 in a new free version you can download and play on any computer.

- Zeldafreak104, on 04/14/2008, -2/+3Where's team fortress?
- MacHarborGuy, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Team Fortress was a general game mod (QuakeC), not a full engine mod. General game mods are not included on this list. Full engine mods are (GLQuake, QuakeWorld, Sin, Half Life, etc).

Action quake 2 gets mentioned because when the quake2 engine source was released they made an engine for it. The Half-Life source engine 'IS' Based on the original half life engine which is based on quake 1.. The leaked source code proves this because there 'STILL' is legacy code from quake 1 in the source engine! DIGG me down and see if a give a shiz

- Abomonog, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Doom3 has EVERY RELATION to Quake. Made by the same person, uses the same basic underlying code structure. All of ids engines are step ups from the previous ones, only GLquake was made entirely from scratch. It's why id games are known for stability out of the box. They use the previous base code and improve it massively. They've been doing this since the first Q2 engine failed and id was forced to do a major overhaul of it after it went gold.

Although i have not started it up in quite some time :(
I had lots of fun playing Urban terror back when it was new, this mod had some really nice maps that i have since seen ported over to other games.- wardawg31, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2You should try the 4.1 version. It is portable and still fun too play.
- wardawg31, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2FAHQ2,
I still enjoy Urban Terror 4. 1 as well. The local LAN parties I attend still run it as one of the games.
Rhizzo - - bbardlbradd, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Urban Terror is a great game for being completely free and a stand-alone. You don't need quake anymore to play Urban Terror, just download and play. Once you get used to the models and whatnot, it gets really addicting and the people that play actually have talent. It's a difficult game to master, unlike Counter-Strike Source, where I can pwn even when eating a sandwich with two hands.
