- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+133Wow. Just wow. Whats next? Banning _semi_ violent video games for anyone under 25? How about we make anyone under the age of 20 take a test to play Teen games?
I ***** hate out of touch politicians more than anything else. Vote these ***** out. Only digging so other people see this. - rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74Inaccurate. Stop digging. There's nothing in the proposed bill that says anything about being 30.
http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A02024 - OneZeroZeroOne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40Story is inacurrate. Nothing mentioned about being 30 years old. A minor is defined as being under 18 years old.
http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A02024
From the bill's text:
1 Section 1. The general business law is amended by adding a new section
2 391-q to read as follows:
3 S 391-Q. SALE OF CERTAIN VIDEO GAMES TO MINORS PROHIBITED. 1. NO
4 PERSON, PARTNERSHIP OR CORPORATION SHALL SELL OR RENT OR OFFER TO SELL
5 OR RENT TO ANY PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN YEARS ANY VIDEO GAME
6 THAT HAS A MATURE OR VIOLENT RATING. SUCH VIDEOS MAY CONTAIN, BUT SHALL
7 NOT BE LIMITED TO, DEPICTIONS DESCRIPTIVE OF, ADVOCATING OR GLAMORIZING
8 COMMISSION OF A VIOLENT CRIME, SUICIDE, SODOMY, RAPE, INCEST, BESTIALI-
9 TY, SADOMASOCHISM, ANY FORM OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY IN A VIOLENT CONTEXT, OR
10 ADVOCATING OR ENCOURAGING MURDER, VIOLENT RACISM, RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE,
11 MORBID VIOLENCE OR THE ILLEGAL USE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL.
12 2. EVERY PERSON, PARTNERSHIP OR CORPORATION ENGAGED IN THE RETAIL SALE
13 OR RENTAL OF VIDEO GAMES SHALL STORE AND DISPLAY SUCH VIDEO GAMES
14 CONTAINING CONTENTS LISTED IN SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION IN A
15 LOCATION DESIGNATED FOR PERSONS OVER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN, IN A MANNER
16 WHICH RESTRICTS ACCESS TO SUCH VIDEO GAMES.
17 3. SALE OR RENTAL OF ANY VIDEO GAME THAT CONTAINS ANY CONTENTS LISTED
18 IN SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION, SHALL BE MADE ONLY TO AN INDIVIDUAL
19 WHO DEMONSTRATES, THROUGH (A) A VALID DRIVER`S LICENSE OR NON-DRIVER`S
20 IDENTIFICATION AND ISSUED BY THE COMMISSIONER OF MOTOR VEHICLES, THE
21 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, ANY UNITED STATES TERRITORY, COMMONWEALTH OR
22 POSSESSION, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, A STATE GOVERNMENT WITHIN THE
23 UNITED STATES OR A PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT OF THE DOMINION OF CANADA; OR
24 (B) A VALID PASSPORT ISSUED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT OR ANY OTHER
25 COUNTRY; OR (C) AN IDENTIFICATION CARD ISSUED BY THE UNITED STATES, - Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@Danryan1 -- Did you even read the BILL? The header on "The INQUIRER" you linked to stated "FACT AND FICTION"-- when you follow the link to the real story, it banning sale to minors, not to folks over 18.
BURY for inaccuracy. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16FTB:
"This
bill would ban the sale of video games that have been given a violent or
mature rating to minors UNDER THE AGE OF 18, and it would require
purchasers of these games to show a valid form of identification in
order to be sold.
"
GG sensationalism. - Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18*sigh*
If only education were enough.
Parents shoudl understand that they need to pay attention to and be involved with the activities of their children regardless of whether there's a law to regulate that or not.
"Under 30" seems a bit excessive though. - DarkerMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15this is never going to happen. remember the bill in Iowa(i think, please correct me if i am wrong) a few years back. it was shot down by the supreme court as being unconstitutional. why the hell cant people(parents mostly) keep a good eye on what their child is doing and playing? it ultimately falls on you to be responsible... stop trying to limit other people because of your own incompetence.
- rderveloy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16The law states you must be over 18 to buy a mature rated video game. The law requires stores to ask for ID for age verification from customers unless they reasonably appear to be over 30 years old.
You can read the bill yourself:
http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A02024&sh=t - lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12buried as inaccurate due to poor journalism
- mikester540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Buried as inaccurate!
- pocketjoker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7maybe need to check ID, but 18+ can still buy
"Rep. Wright’s bill also calls for the equivalent of an “adults only” section for such games. Retailers would be required to check I.D. for buyers who appear to be 30 or under."
http://gamepolitics.com/2007/01/15/ny-bill-limits-racial-religious-violence-in-games/ - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+730 is the new 18.
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I really hate how people think that just because a bill has been PROPOSED by some (idiot) MP / Senator / whatever, that said bill is "being considered" or is "going to be passed" or anything like that. Stupid bills are put forward and shot down all the time.
- Hegemony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hate when people post stories from the inquirer. Stop being so damn gullible, people.
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4... or buying a gun.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well those under-30 geeks can get pretty violent sometimes with their girlish slaps :)
I wonder if anyone has stopped to think about what your average gamer looks like and their strength etc. Geeks (like me and many others) have non-existent muscles. We can pwn in a finger wrestle, or typing competition... but the average geek would most likely injure themselves using any kind of weapon in real life. The recoil on a gun has the potential to shatter our bones, and the weight of say a samurai sword is too much to swing it effectively.
Thus I close my case with: ***** YOU JACK THOMPSON! - codelogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"..damn liberals. no offense..."
lol...right, 'no offense'. - Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm all for someone making it so that you have to be 18 to buy this *****; Why? Because then the asshats like Jack Thompson can sue parents instead of video game companies.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm guessing sarcasm.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I totally agree, this bill will never get passed... damn liberals. no offense..."
Right, because she really sounds like she's being liberal about this. Sounds more to me like she's being incredibly conservative. Notice I didn't say A liberal or A conservative. - h4mx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Age 30? What? Like the article says, by then you'd be old enough to do all sorts of things except buy Counter Strike?
Whoa, dude, so video games are now considered to require more responsibility than driving cars or getting married? - OneZeroZeroOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dupe. oops.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NY resident here, would love to say this is fake. But the fact is, Hillary Clinton is our senator and is well-known to be against video game violence, just like Joe Lieberman. The sad thing: unlike Jack Thompson, people actually listen to what she has to say. Something this extreme will never be passed though. (I hope).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahhh *****. Digg got me again. Another stupid inaccurate title from the least reliable source of information on the entire Internet: The Inquirer.
Can we just automatically reject submissions from The Inquirer in the future? It'd save us all alot of grief. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When are we going to see bans on other violent imagery in other media sources?
A ban on violent movies? A ban on violent magazines? A ban on watching a fight at school?
Violence is human nature, it's how some of us solve conflicts. Get over it you damn hippies.*
*disclaimer: I'm a lover, not a fighter. - 1town, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Did you ever stop to think
I'm old enough to go to war, but I aint old enough to drink" - dadioflex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"but can go to all the strip clubs when I'm 21 - then go to the casino and by some brutal pornos and stop by blockbuster and rent Saw 1, 2, and 3 and then Hostile and a few other borderline snuff films - and still be legal?"
Yeh, this law regulates on age, not taste. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By "hack" do you mean downloading a widely available file off the internet?
- bassman730, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can drink myself to death at age 21 but I can't buy certain videogames until I'm 30?
Something seems wrong with this picture. - tehdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is a horrible idea. Banning violent video games, ok, I understand that, but banning minors from buying systems or games period? When I was 16 I had a job and bought myself games, I didn't go off and kill people. Hell, if you forced the under 18 crowd to hold mommy's hand to go buy games it just might push some of them off the deep end.
The fact that you are so eager to shaft the under 18 gamers is surprising, considering you were probably once one yourself. - TheOneGreatX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this doesn't seem unreasonable. People under the age of 21 can't buy more than one movie ticket to an R rated movie. This isn't so different. Besides, this country needs more perks for turning 18 (there is the right to vote, but selective service and cigarettes don't cut it for me).
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what's funny is you would be able to go buy a real gun but not a videogame with pretend guns
- mojorojoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NY lawmakers stated that originally they had wanted to put the ban higher based on the Nintendo Wii's attach rate with people over 49.
"We feel that New York's Geriatric population are encouraged to be violent based on their reactions with the Wii Mote. This could lead to brawls at The Old Country Buffet, and on regional Elks Club Bingo nights" - rajanKazhman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a great idea that will save many lives and make America a better place.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2never going to happen. Not until they move the age of those able to fight in a war to 30. Which is more violent, a video game or war
- CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Doesn't it seem kind of idiotic how you could be old enough to drink & buy alcohol, buy a gun and drive a car, but for some reason you're not allowed to buy a video game?
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Will never happen.
- kansascowboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2so wait...someone could go out and buy the raunchiest most disgusting porn ever created...but they still need, at age 20 something, to call up their parents to ask them to buy the new halo
- RickyBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it sead nothing about being under 18 read the story for a change befor posteing it sead
"NEW YORK STATE is planning a law which would prevent the sale of some video games to those under the age of 30.
The move, being pushed by democrat Aurelia Greene, will stop all violent games being sold to young whipper snappers under the age of 30. It is not clear if they are allowed to buy it if they show up with their mums and dads." - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In order for that to work it would have to be consistent...which the ESRB is not.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+118? No problem for me. Furthermore I see no sense in bitching over this since parents can just buy the game for their children without a child present.
- mecki78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No sex before 16, not being grown-up before 18, no alcohol before 21 and now no gaming before 30? Are you now considered a teenager till the age of 30?
Either you are an adult or you are not and if you are an adult, you are responsible for yourself, that includes what you drink and what you play. Period. This is ridiculous. - KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So you can be old enough to have fought in multiple wars, but don't dare trying to buy a videogame to simulate them. Brutal killing is wrong!
- klinellyred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What the hell? If 20 years olds can get drafted into the war, why can't they play violent games?! I'm so glad I live in california
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I propose that anyone who, upon voting YES for this on the ballot, is automatically shot by the voting machine.
Thin out the herd of morons juuuust a little bit. And with a sweet dash of irony. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All this based on the rating from the ESRB no doubt. What a joke.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering that the parent can be held responsible for a childs actions yes I think that child should have to hold it's parents hand...and vise versa. Kids don't know *****, hell most adults I know don't know *****, but kids less. I would much rather give up 2 years of choice (that not every kid makes by the way) in videogames so that the next 40 years go unaffected with no waste of tax payer dollars on the subject. Look at Germany with it's videogame nanny state. That's where all the lawsuits, and dumbass bills are trying to take us.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nobody reads anymore. Digg is the perfect example as to how the general populous has become "headline readers". They read the headlines and assume they know what's about to be said so they skip the actual information.
And this is why everyone is a self proclaimed expert on everything. - Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its the inquirer, don't believe this *****
- dip42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes! thats it, the solution to reducing violence is rasing the age limit.................. NEVER MIND the fact that the war is on the news everyday with reports, "The deadliest month yet" and reports of "10 killed in car bombing"
Yes, thats the solution.... (dumb asses) -
