- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25This goes to show you just how expensive having a girlfriend/wife is and what can be done with that money otherwise.
- Voldemint, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22God, imagine accidentally putting a game in the wrong case. Just imagine trying to find it again. :S
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19So everyone who spends extra money on themsleves are "*****". So I am a "*****" for purchasing myself a laptop in December because I already have a couple of desktops? Everyone who purchases a $60,000+ auto are "*****" because they could have gotten a PT Cruiser for about $15,000 and donated the rest of the money to charity? Everyone who purchased a $1,000,000 home should have just gotten a $500,000 home and donated the rest to charity? Everyone who has more autos than people should have just used the money for the other autos on a charity?
I seriously doubt that you donate even 2% of your weekly income someone in need! Do you really have to have that $4.00 cofee every day, that could give some homeless person a meal every day! Yes we all could do more, but the point is WE DO NOT HAVE TO!!!
It is every person's RIGHT to spend THEIR money that THEY earned on WHATEVER THEY WANT TO! If I wanted a laptop for every room of my home, I can purchase them if I WANT TO! If I want a 61"DLP HDTV in my bathroom, I can do that! If I want to have the world's largest DVD collection then more power to me!
You arrogent goofs really get to me! - Kingmishima, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16"I'd personally like to punch who ever owns that collection in the face for being such a *****. I mean, whats the point of buying 1000's of games just to think that you're cool or whatever."
... way to understand the mindset of a collector. They don't do it for your admiration, it's almost like an obsession. If the guy wanted fans he would have listed his real name and given a picture of himself, but he did not.
"Instead of wasting all that money, it could of gone to a much more needy or atleast practical cause."
"needy" and "practical cause"s are relative, I truly doubt he finds his collection to be a "waste" of money. one man's garbage...another mans Atari 2600 game... something like that. - pranay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11From one of the comments to the linked blog, the person seems Canadian (there's a maple leaf flag in pics). And it is really impressive considering games are even more expensive in Canada.
Mr. Gamecollector does not know how mnay games he owns, and he is currently redoing his list (database?). - tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10He would have a hard time saying to his son (with any credibility), "Now son, you're playing video games too much. Why don't you go play outside."
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What would even prompt you to say something like that? It's not your money, so it's pretty easy to tell someone else how to spend it isn't it?
- kelyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Except that this guy has a kid, rtphokie...
- GuyOnOatmealBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wish I was that kid.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I can tell you where his money *isn't* going. Bandwidth.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I find it funny that he has all of that stuff and then you see a crappy old tv to play them on. You'd think if he spent so much time getting these games he'd put some money into a decent entertainment system too
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Actually the old games look better on older tvs, at least in my experience. The sharper the picture is, the more graininess and interference you can see. The blurrier old pictures act like a kind of poor man's antialiasing.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"... way to understand the mindset of a collector. They don't do it for your admiration"
Um... someone who buys a bunch of crap and shows it off on the internet is looking for admiration and attention.
IMHO, too many people derive too much self worth from how cool they (and others) think their 'stuff' is. - zeroreality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Impressive collection . . . but of no fault of the interviewer, WORST INTERVIEW EVER. I really wanted to hear how he collected so many games, why/how he started, how many games he had, etc. It did seem kinda odd that he didn't really seem to know anything about his collection of games.
- megashaun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's like the guy is embarrassed of having that many games. If that was me, I wouldn't shut up about it.
- EricAnderton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually, some of the older consoles (like the NES) take advantage of the color smearing present in NTSC/PAL rendering and use it to achieve some rather sophisticated dithering.
http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=10870#10870 (scroll down for screenshots)
The screenshots above are from an emulator on a PC. I would not be at all suprised if high-end plasma and LCD screens eliminate smearing just like a monitor would; so something newer would hardly be the same thing as an old TV tube. - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6agree with king, being a game collector myself. it's the feeling of owning the games and building up your own personal treasure trove of games. some poeple actually like owning the real things over bootlegs or pirated crap.
- bussche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i wouldnt really say things are more expensive here, mabey in certain provinces. In general though, prices are on par with american retailers.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, for a while I had my old 2600 hooked up to an old Thompson TV complete with simulated wood grain enclosure (complete with sticker on the side that said "simulated wood"). It was a perfect match with the Atari.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"His son was probably just visiting him at work. I can take a picture of shelves at a store and claim them as my own collection too"
That didn't look like any store I've ever seen. Looked more like the house of someone with obsessive compulsive disorder - kimzor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7..Wow!
That's a massive collection! just imagine the fun you'd have playing all the old classics! - NetPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can't even get to the games, I dont see the sense in having them. I have a pretty large collection, and I don't play them all often, but with all those games on the floor he couldn't even get to them without a huge production. It seems like a total waste to me. And the systems sitting on the shelf, WTF? There's a brand new 360 just sitting there, none of it is hooked up. His "Gaming station" with the chair and tv look more like a testing area. Pop in a game, make sure it works, and put it on a shelf.
It's a shame when collections turn into obsessions, you don't even enjoy the stuff you buy, just stare at it. - crombie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Suck percentage on that collection has got to be around 65%
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow! I thought I had a lot of games.
It does bring up an interesting issue, though. Does anyone else find that as you get older, you have more money to buy games, but less time to play them? As a result, you can easily start buying more games than you have time to play, and the backlog just keeps building up. Eventually you realize that you've turned into a game collector more than a game player.
At least I don't have to worry about getting bored during retirement.... - mrnephilim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What if he wants something in the back corner, does he have to step on everything else to get it?
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You gotta wonder where he gets all these games and systems from. Why does he have more than one of some games and systems? I can understand having more than one of a system incase the old ones broke and you just came across a good deal but why more duplicate games? He might own a video store or atleast bought out alot of video stores stock if they went out of business.
In my own defense: I'm not rich and I don't buy ***** games.......thats all I can say to make me feel better. :P - filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How could you decide on what to play?
- inphinity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't blame the interviewer... He did say that the guy only answered half of his questions.
I personally thought the questions were well-thought-out, but the guy's answers sounded like he was being bothered. - Ignathius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow. gimme the link to your bit torrent client, cuz mine doesn't do physical boxes :P
and tbh, i can't think of that many games that are *worth* owning. at the most, i probably had 25 console games, when i had 3 consoles. i doubt i've got 30 pc games i've thought were worth their price. - Gardenhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Some of the old tvs aren't that crappy. I still watch all my dvds and play all my games on an old atari color monitor. They play great.
Actually, it's not an atari, I can't remember what old gaming company it is. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There are a lot of rich people in the world.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2possibly a dupe: http://digg.com/gaming/The_world_s_largest_collection_of_video_games.
but it's alright i guess cause it never really got going and the linked site crashed and burned two weeks ago and is still down. - Tetra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This story is not about video games. It's about obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here is a mirror: http://www.vintagecomputing.com.nyud.net:8090/index.php/archives/103
I recommend googling coral cache, this will teach you how to find your own mirror instead of begging others. - kelyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you read the whole interview it explains that the kid in the picture is the collector's son.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6how does he find the time!!!
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That 'man' looks awfully young. It seems males are getting called men younger and younger these days. (Unless he is really just a boy - as it seems)
- whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Check out the pics; they are actually alphabetized. Fantastic. Good to see the Dreamcast well represented.
I'd be more interested in some of the rarer games; about the only thing I've got that would really count is a Gold Cart LoZ: Ocarina of Time on the N64. Wouldn't be a big deal, but its a PAL version - which they didn't sell anywhere but in Australia (I remember the 1996 rush to pre-order in hopes of getting the gold cart here in the UK before they anounced no gold for Europe). There are plenty of Gold Carts in Europe, but none of them play on the PAL console. Lucky for me, I pre-ordered an import.
Also, its nice to know someone else has at least bought my favorite RPG ever; Sword of Vermillion on the Sega Genisis/Megadrive/Super. - tombomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think i speak for everyone when I say:
Get this man a Bud Light! We salute you Mr. Video game colector! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll bet he gets a lot of miles out of that treadmill :)
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the story. I sent some of the pictures to my wife. Hopefully after seeing this guys collection she won't think so badly of my habit.
- JuliusErving, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is really overwhelming. Yeah it definitely shows some OCD especially the way in which all the games are organized. As a long time gamer though, you have to be envious.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The bigger the newspost site, the more people are going to get involved. wouldn't it be nice to consolidate all your links in one location? That's why I visit Digg, and digg only.
- cappslite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He must have won the Ebay auction posted sometime ago.
- expensix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He should have bought some stocks and bonds. And maybe a bunch of lottery tickets.
- pihlopase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and I thought my collection of Futurama tin wind-ups was out of control..
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats true. I have less time to play the games Ive been wanting to play and when I was younger I would of already had them when they came out and beat them soon enough. I can afford it but I just can't afford the time.
- klept, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a better question then darkgmr. Where does the guy get the time to play these games? Or for that matter, does he? His kid has a couple hundred games in his room that he plays? Yeah,... sure....I believe that. Or a better question would be how much time does the kid spend on each game per week? If over an hour, that is more minutes then are in a week. No matter what the game- mmorg, rpg, rts, fps, etc- if it is good, you are certainly going to spend more time in one day than an hour. Even game addicts have to sleep, and ah, do other things that their body requires.
Anyhow, it would be interesting for me to see his collection and what he had to say about games and gaming. - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who the hell has the free time to play all those games ?
ive got a stack of 5 xbox games that i havent even broken the plastic wrap on (got them b/c they were on sale for 1/2 off) not to mention about 20 dvds that i havent had time to watch either - newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what happens if his house burns down??
