- Chainheart2, on 03/08/2009, -1/+33"Gamers are often stereotyped as socially awkward individuals who prefer the confines of their virtual worlds to that of the real world."
As a gamer, yes - salinungatha, on 03/09/2009, -4/+25Gaming is mainstream. Gamers are mainstream. Its the people who don't know this or are surprised by this that have suspect social lives.
- therealkid, on 09/10/2009, -2/+22People are retarded. Anyone who doesn't fit their idea of what is 'normal' is considered socially awkward. Why can't they accept that not everyone wants to be part of the mass of sheeple that's running rampant these days?
- ZachGlazer, on 03/09/2009, -0/+13While I partially agree with you, you must admit that there are limits to this. Running around like "sheeple" all day is just as bad are clicking around are some fake character who does not exist. Playing a game is fine but I all but too often see little brothers who act like the kid in the first video. It isn't at all healthy, and I actually get a little scared. If people grow up doing nothing but being unproductive people in society then I feel bad for them; it's a wasted life. I think more awareness should be spread so parents know when enough is enough. Sadly, it may be too late for that little boy.
- johnkemp, on 03/09/2009, -0/+11People, in general, are boring to talk to. They are rarely interesting. ***** drugs, gimmee a good cpl_mil or de_dust2 5v5 scrim.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -4/+13Im a walking stereotype, overweight, glasses, unshaven, not much too look at...BUT I GOT A LEVEL 80 SHAMAN!
(and no im not *****' you.) - bigballerrob22, on 03/09/2009, -0/+6Gamers aren't poor and lonely boys. That's what Digg users are
- pinchduck, on 03/09/2009, -1/+6American Demographics, by Digg:
25% of people believe that Obama is the Anti-Christ
33% cannot name the 3 branches of government
The other 42% are socially awkward loner types who play video games who may not be socially awkard loners. - hardtoconfuse, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5The word "gamer" needs to be dropped from the media vocabulary within 5 years. Stereotypes of gaming culture is one of the most extensively misunderstood. Playing games doesn't make you a gamer. Watching movies doesn't make you a movier. However you can be an enthusiast.
- jeff823, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Just because someone may be into internet dating doesn't mean that's there's anything wrong with their appearance. I totally enjoyed meeting women online and I'm a decent looking guy in decent shape, it sure beat the hell out of meeting bar skanks. In a 3 year span I met about 75 women online (including my wife of 5 years now) and about 85% of them were decent people, only about 10% were either psycho or lied about themselves. I'm also a lifetime gamer who has a relationship, social life and a career. So I guess I break the stereotypical gamer and internet dater mold. :)
- iDiggYa, on 03/09/2009, -0/+5You must be superman.
- abrasion, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4Lonely, maybe I suppose, socially awkward - sometimes but very outgoing with my own friends.
but poor? gamers? We're more likely to be intelligent and smart with money, furthermore we're not down the club spending 400$ a weekend on drinks.
Poor, no not really. - xRand0mx, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Glad to see someone else picking up a decent MMO. Eve is one of the best, especially if you have a life.
- iticu, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4So everyone who goes outside is part of the "sheeple" herd, which is why you stay inside?
Normally, when you're making up excuses for yourself, it's called denial. - imsoclever, on 03/09/2009, -0/+4Perhaps your argument is valid.
On the other hand, perhaps if you spent less time playing games you'd be able to write a coherent post. - SolInvictus, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3I felt really bad for the kid, honestly. Those teens are just bullying him and it's so unnecessary. I mean, he's just 10 so he can't be expected to know any serious threats apart from what he's been exposed to on Cartoon Network.
Imagine if someone pulled your keyboard away from you while you were chatting with one of your friends on IM and typed something nasty. Wouldn't that piss you off? - Nesh, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3I dropped Wow for EVE 2 years ago and never looked back. Damn good game, IMO.
- crushfan, on 03/09/2009, -0/+3Too close to home. (I'm talking about the title) Well, it won't be like that forever, right?
- ConfirmedCynic, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Sounds like he's a product of a broken family. No father around to introduce him to outdoor pursuits, maybe. All too common these days.
Another point that should be made is that MMO addiction (and let's face it, he sounds like an addict) is a passing phase. It make take a few years, but one day most of these gamers wake up and realize they're just not that interested in leveling yet another character, throw open the curtains, and start a new life.
I've wondered if there's a psychological relationship between gambling and playing these characters. Both give intermittent rewards, for example (the payoff and the level). - Jaggd, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2You mean all stereotypes aren't always true???
- okcoolok1234, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Gamers would like a Singing Stormtrooper singing a song about nerds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24FhTl_f9Vg - iDiggYa, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Can't they be both?
- kingofthisnight, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2No. Lack of sleep mostly.
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -1/+3i sure the ***** am
- Murdats, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2same here, but dropped wow ages back and am into eve online atm, I am an mmo whore.
I am also a software developer and am into science, anime and roleplaying games - Falkon, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2For the record, my dad introduced me to games.
I'm not your stereotypical gamer, but really, anyone who's like this has some sort of parental reason. The mom is enabling it, etc. - junkfoodjoe, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Not to the point where I would be babbling incoherently. This kid clearly has issues. I'm not saying the teens messing with him are helping, but you can definitely tell there is something wrong with that picture.
- junkfoodjoe, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Hooray for... us?
- blanktarget, on 03/09/2009, -1/+3And it took a while to convince her too.
- Skooma714, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2That number isn't for the area code.
- captainanndor, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2And I'm sure you're in any position to judge someone by appearances, given that you need to look for an internet girlfriend. Which you then complain about on Digg.
- wentwhere, on 03/09/2009, -2/+3Anyone who uses the phrase 'sheeple' unironically needs to reevaluate their life (i.e. how much of their bitterness stems from staring at the wall of mom's basement too many years in a row)
- djruden, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2Lucky for you FFXI is both console and PC.
- superiorbeing, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2<3
- Strongo, on 03/09/2009, -2/+3well since one woman said it...must be true
- Skooma714, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2It's a hobby like any other. For those who say I should get a life, frak you. I tried to get a girlfriend and guess what? It's not that easy. You can do everything right and everything still goes wrong.
So ***** it. I'm going to play Saint's Row 2 and Age of Empires. I finished all the Ronin missions, ***** was SO cash. - izosity, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2Seriously i heard some kid committed suicide last year and he watched TV -(must be tvs fault)
Bill Orielly probably doesnt know ***** about video games either,; Bill Oreilly does he give us the news? or just his opinion of it? - if ne thing its opinionated journalism ruining western society
Another thing! it doesnt matter what a guy is doing theres always a girl that will find something wrong with it, e.g. 'INSERT FUN HERE'= "how come BLAH BLAH BLAH so much" - izosity, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1lol true its all over the place
points i was trying to make could have included
1. take responsibility don't blame the products
2. dont quote some dick in your article (unless the dick has some actual substance to add)
3. chicks will nag you no matter what you do
I dont know? - prolly coz all the games i play - or maybe i just dont know
since u dont know . u might as well blame the games - newnie, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Stroking your own ego... yuck
- inactive, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2One woman, huh? Fascinating.
- niccisnail, on 03/09/2009, -1/+2Well, one girl says it--by using a survey of thousands of people ;)
- Cerialthriller, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1i love MMOs but i think gambling is a dumb waste of money.
- Cerialthriller, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1i've been with my online girlfriend for 8 years now. something came up all 17 times we were supposed to meet so far, but im pretty confident that this time its going to happen.
- rexxhunt, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1can we maybe go on a date sometime murdats?
- NicoNicoNico, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1The article probably meant hardcore gamers. Casual gamers are the ones who play solitaire or flash games, and usually aren't considered real gamers.
- MavTheMaverick, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1I'm not lonely
- SammyboyKIDDAH, on 03/10/2009, -0/+0That's a typical stereotype. Honestly, I'd say about 5% of the people who own an xbox360, for example, and if that, fit into this stereotype. The other 95% are casual gamers. The problem with that kid in the video is that he's putting too much time and energy into using the computer to play his video game. Rather than going outside to climb trees, or set fires. And what about addictive personalities? Maybe most of the people who are 'hardcore gamers' are just addictive personalities. For example they have started gaming over smoking, womanizing, drinking, or drugs. Which is cheaper.
- junkfoodjoe, on 03/09/2009, -2/+2Oh my god that video was classic. "Get that camera away from my face you idiotic fool!"
