- robomixx, on 12/01/2007, -4/+54Simpson's did it.
- cbrunet, on 12/01/2007, -3/+42Maybe its smart of them, but they're not the first ones to do it. Fargo police did the same thing with VIP tickets to an Ozzy Osbourne show, and Ozzy was SUPER PISSED! Do you think Microsoft feels the same?
- darlyn, on 12/01/2007, -0/+26Appropriate: IT'S A TRAP!
- WhereAmI, on 12/01/2007, -0/+26No, Microsoft won't care. Anyway it has been done even long before that. The Simpsons even did it. A free boat I think. I've also seen it on RealTV or Max X or one of those shows where they videotaped the sting. Usually the criminals laugh it off in a "I can't believe I fell for that old gag manner".
- natedouglas, on 12/01/2007, -0/+23That's not bad. I read once about a police department that found a bathtub marijuana growing operation in the woods. They took it back to the station and posted an ad in the local newspaper.
Sure enough, someone showed up to claim it. - Tygell, on 12/01/2007, -3/+25You've got to be pretty ***** stupid to believe the police would use the police station as the pick up point. Shouldn't you be mopping something right now?
- tektalk, on 12/01/2007, -2/+22http://xkcd.com/53/
- Icecream, on 12/01/2007, -0/+16*sigh* I wanted cops throwing 360s at drug dealers.
- Aggort, on 12/01/2007, -6/+21In other news... Police in Tuscan attempted to lure criminals with a PS3 and TV, they reported it was highly unsuccessful.
- michaelaranda, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14A defense that claims the defendant would not have broken the law if not tricked into doing it by law enforcement officials.
I'm no legal expert, but I don't really think that applies here. - Mast3rDigg3r, on 12/01/2007, -0/+14you can't entrap someone that already committed a crime...
- floridiot2, on 12/01/2007, -0/+11did they not think that winning a prize for a contest they didn't enter in was at the least a little bit odd?
- supermanred, on 12/01/2007, -8/+19They tried earlier with a PS3 but nobody showed up.
- FinalLimit, on 12/01/2007, -7/+18That is ridiculously smart of them.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9yea, i was thinking between ps3 curing jaundis and 360 catching criminals, wii better start printing cash
- panteradactyl, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9Headline was slightly misleading. Actually a bit of a relief
- ferrariman60, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8Yeah, they already broke the law- that's why there were warrants out for their arrest. Entrapment doesn't apply in any way, shape or form.
- andregriffin, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7You do? Really?
- spoonz, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7Homer: Up and away in my beautiful my beautiful motor boat! Da da da da!
Bart: But we didn't enter any police raffle.
Homer: That doesn't matter; the important thing is we won. - emt41, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7The criminals were not there perhaps?
- mrboratsagdiev, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6Not really. This kind of thing's been used in law enforcement since the 80s at least.
- flair1, on 12/01/2007, -1/+7The police were afraid to offer a free Wii, since they might run out of room in the jail.
- andregriffin, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6Know what entrapment is much?
- Rupan, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6it maybe smart but this story is horribly written.
- Fizban140, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6That isn't entrapment at all moron.
- darlyn, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5May I ask, what exactly were the prices being given for?
- ponycat, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5The mast had termites
- ZachSka87, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5The Ozzy thing wasn't the first, either. People have been doing this for YEARS.
- Nerfdude, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4i can only assume you meant soot.
- Viper007Bond, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4This isn't new. I remember watching COPS from the 80's where they were using a TV to catch guys with warrants.
- Klarth, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4APOSTROPHE
- davidjunit, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4Police have been doing this for a while but with other things.
On the news a few weeks ago they ran off the names of several people saying that they had unclaimed tax refund checks that they needed to pick up from some address. mmm hmm, sure. - merwin, on 12/01/2007, -5/+9They're from Texas. That ensures they're not the brightest folk around.
- TheRemoteViewer, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4Much less having to show up in person to claim your winnings on the contest you didn't enter, when you're already on the run from the law.
- andrew7667, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4The slogan for the El Paso Times is "No really, we're a newspaper!"
(I'm from El Paso) - Mononuclear, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4And you've won A YEAR'S FREE STAY AT OUR EXPENSE. In a jail.
Hah. - panteradactyl, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4Or a raphel, to follow the mispelling suit
- hawridger, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5I was expecting some kind of sting using their LIVE friends list... Eh.
- schavira, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4People should always trust others online telling them they've won free things.
- Nerfdude, on 12/01/2007, -4/+7...uh, it'd be the same result, maybe less?
- brucemanly, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3they had already committed the crimes for which they were being arrested. They were not entrapped into committing the crimes
- knobtwiddler, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3wait you actually use that windows LIVE thingy?
scary!!! - krahzee, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4This type of thing always works far more effectively than trying to go to a fugative's/ suspect's home. For one thing the police are exposed to far less risk than entering a house where they do not know what's on the other side of the door. They also do not have to log nearly as many hours to get more people at once. So for relatively little cost, they can take quite a few people off the street at once, vs. hours of survailance to see if a suspect is home .
In this scenario, they control the entire situation making it a much safer place for this to go down for everyone including the person they are trying to get. - knobtwiddler, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3still doing the old 'claim your prize' arrest thing huh... criminals will never learn!
- ganjadude4391, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4the only stupid crominials are the ones who get caught.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/01/2007, -1/+4One. Word. Sentences.
Brought. to. you. by. a. dumbass. - wonderworm, on 12/01/2007, -0/+3Yet again greed is proven to be more powerful than common sense.
- Makisupa, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2No consideration, no contract.
- manitoba98xp, on 12/01/2007, -0/+2The legal sense is what technically matters here…and nobody's laughing.
