The article:
Some people can't wait: Two gunmen stormed an Elk Grove store Thursday morning and made off with four coveted PlayStation 3 video game consoles, a day before they were to go on sale.
PlayStation 3 is the latest ballyhooed techno offering to create campsites at electronics stores. Buyers have been lining up since the beginning of the week to be one of the first owners.
Sales begin today for the 400,000 consoles distributed to North American stores. They'll retail for $499 to $599, but already are selling in advance on eBay for $3,000.
After the Elk Grove heist, police warned retailers in the area -- some of whom hired more security. They also advised the encampments of hopeful purchasers to watch their backs.
At the Best Buy store on Arden Way, John Bennett played dominoes with others waiting in line Thursday night.
"They ain't gonna rob this one," he said when he heard about the Elk Grove caper. "I got two days' pay in this."
The two robbers, wearing ski masks and black jackets and described as 6-foot-3, hit the GameStop on Laguna Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., according to Elk Grove police. They left without injuring customers or employees.
"They wanted the high-end equipment," said Christopher Trim, Elk Grove police spokesman.
The robbers at GameStop also stole several 2005 model Microsoft Xbox 360 game systems. But those are so last year.
Manager Rod Overbo declined to talk about the robbery.
"When you're dealing with high-end products where there's a lot of demand, the concern is individuals will commit crimes to obtain the products," Trim said.
Even before the GameStop robbery, the Best Buy in Elk Grove had hired extra security, said store manager Trevor Fee.
Thirty-nine people lined up outside the store for an inventory of 34 video game consoles. They erected card tables and portable heaters and played games to pass the time.
"There are probably more of us waiting in line than there are gunmen, so I am not too worried," said Sean Minot.
The Natomas man had called area stores and decided his best odds of making a buy were in Elk Grove.
At a Circuit City a few blocks to the west, 13 people were preparing to camp overnight Thursday for the 10 available PlayStation 3 systems.
"We are more worried about people robbing us for our money while we are waiting than we are of being mugged for a PlayStation 3," said Jose Armenta, who lives just north of the Elk Grove city limits.
Armenta, who came with three other friends, hopes to sell his PlayStation for $5,000.
Qaseem Aszila of West Sacramento had been in line at the Best Buy on Arden Way since Wednesday. He displayed some sticks in the back of his truck he would use for protection.
"That (robbery) makes you think. You should be on your toes," he said.
Anyone contemplating selling stolen goods online could have trouble with eBay, said Catherine England, a spokeswoman for the San Jose-based online auction Web site.
Those selling the PlayStation 3 before the Friday launch had to display a picture of a "pre-order receipt," England said.
Sellers also must have made 50 previous sales on eBay with 90 percent positive feedback, she said.
"We've been told by law enforcement that the dumbest place to sell stolen goods is on eBay because you have to have an address, an e-mail address and we take financial information," England said. "It is by no means anonymous."
Trim, the Elk Grove police spokesman, said buyers going to stores should use credit cards instead of cash.
And, if confronted by a determined thief, give it up, he said.
"It's a game," Trim said. "It's a piece of electronics." - mleino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42haha they stole xbox 360s too. "but those are so last year"
- vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23The men escaped after carjacking an expensive sports car and leading police on a high-speed chase throughout the city. Police are at this time uncertain as to how the men got away, but there is speculation that they were somehow able to have their stolen car quickly repainted, and are at this time lying low in a safehouse. Authorities are currently investigating a tip that the safehouse can be identified by the glowing body armor, firearms, and baseball bat floating just outside the entrance.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Gold has been most recently trading around $622 per ounce. Since the PS3 weighs approximately 11 pounds, PS3s would have to sell for $109,472 (give or take $10,000 due to the approximation of weight,) to be worth their weight in gold.
However, the PS3 *is* worth more than it's weight in Silver. - TonySki, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23page leads to dead end
- usmevans7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I like the guy who has "sticks" in the back of his car for protection.
"So there's guys out there willing to steal my ps3 with guns, have you seen these sticks!? Right off the tree, I'm so hard core, they won't know what hit them and by the time they figure it out I'll be playing with my PS3." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18A crappy PS3 that can be resold for thousands of dollars in profits to stupid rich people.
- lpmusix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Might wanna find a dictionary first
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9All that effort, getting the guns..Assembling a posse, then picking the right time.
Boy, will they be disappointed when they get home. - Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Robber 1: "Nice! A brand new PS3! Pop in a Blu-Ray movie, man...."
Robber 2: "Dude...none of us own a single Blu-Ray disc....."
Robber 1: "*****......"
* proceed to head back to the same store to rob the blu-ray stand of 3 movies * - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"The two robbers, wearing ski masks and black jackets and described as 6-foot-3, hit the GameStop on Laguna Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., according to Elk Grove police. I'm sure they'll catch those guys with that detailed description!
"There are probably more of us waiting in line than there are gunmen, so I am not too worried," said Sean Minot."
:| This guy must not understand how many bullets a gun can hold and how quickly they can reach their targets. - plastek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8When I camped, I took a claw hammer, and a switchblade.
I didn't take my wallet, just taped my credit card, and my license to the inside of my leg. This morning when I picked up my ps3s, I had the store double bag them, and I literally ran straight to my car.
On the way home, I drove around in circles for about 10 minutes just to make sure I wasn't being followed.
Just because you're paranoid don't mean their not after you. - NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You do know that, that stereo type hasn't been valid since the DS came out... right? O_o XD
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This kind of crap is going to lead to more and more limited Midnight launches... and more situations where cops will be posted around these stores durring these events... >_>
I just hope the Wii midnight launch wont have this happen in my area... I'll keep 911 on speed dial if I have too... >_> they aren't getting my Wii from me! - ridgelawrence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Manager Rod Overbo declined to talk about the robbery."
He was in on it. - ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And who says video games don't cause violence?!?!
(lol) - zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Its not as if Sony is going to STOP making these systems after the opening day and up until Christmas. With the supply made up until Christmas and soooo many people buying this thing ONLY to sell on ebay I wonder if the market will just end up saturated. There just HAS to be some point where you have more PS3's on eBay than idiots in the world willing to pay several grand for it.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I was number 8/8 to get my PS3 there too! I'm ***** pissed, I hate this town!
- icantdrawanime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you take the ebay prices for PS3s at face value, robbing small video game stores for PS3s is probably the smartest thing for a crook to do right now. Much easier to pull off than a bank heist, and almost as profitable. All you need is a gun and a slight mental impairment.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The robbers at GameStop also stole several 2005 model Microsoft Xbox 360 game systems. But those are so last year."
Lol. - rocketryguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You are not likely to die from a *single* 9mm or similar GSW.
If, as is quite possible and/or likely, you are shot more than once, your chance of death rises quite quickly. If you've been shot 3 or more times, statistically speaking, you're likely going to bleed out too fast to survive.
So since your standard 9mm has at least 10 rounds, if not more, I'd say let them have whatever and get on with your life. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Try this link instead:

Elk Grove is just south of where I live. It's a pretty nice area, not a lot of crime. Then again, maybe that's why it was hit. - matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"BREAKING NEWS - PS3, XBOX 360, Wii"

In other news, North Korea has invaded South Korea, China, Russia, Japan, and Taiwan. - daofma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Almost anybody who ever talks about anti-aliasing uses the term "jaggies."
- cybortrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hahahahahh this stuff cracks me up. ALL YOUR PS3 ARE BELONG TO US.
yes, each console has unique serials, mac addresses, etc...but does anyone know for a fact if these identifiers are actually logged into system that can track which device went to what store? i havent seen a box but the only way i see this working is if the info is printed on the outside - Valleye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@GeneralAntilles
Oh you might not die but it would sure hurt a hell of alot more than not getting to play a video game system the first day. Or watch all 12 Blueray movies. - GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who cares? Just let the free market work it out, and if trouble comes along, let the police handle it. SONY didn't make these people do what they did, so why should Sony be forced to pay?
- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This whole thing is just turning into a ***** travesty. And all sides are accountable. Sony is putting out a console with extremely limited numbers. Retailers are unorganized in how to distribute them. And fans have turned into primal animals that will go to any extreme necessary to get their hands on it. It's like the perfect storm of creating a riot.
- DOUBLEz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People are complaining about too many PS3 stories, but we wouldn't here about all this, this fast without DIGG, I for one fell entrained and informed.
Thank you Mr. Rose. - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The things people will do to get hyped up electronics...This world needs a serious wake up call.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nobody can invade japan because the us has so many forces their
is sort of like mini california-land. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that was the best thing I have read all day.
- lpmusix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, mac addresses are only sent at the Layer2 level...So the only way to block based off that was if Sony actually had a way to pull the mac address from it, and I'm sure if you're h@x0r!$h enough you can change it.
- NeMeSiS187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and this happened in my little redneck wanna be gangster suburban town of Elk Grove! Oh how glad I am that I'm at college and not back home.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I went to school in Green Bay, WI and have no idea what crime is like in Elk Grove.
- rjc1187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I live in South Sacramento which is right next to Elk Grove. I can GUARANTEE that this crime was done by a couple of teenagers, maybe 18 or 19. Simply because Elk Grove is a little suburb where crazy (literally crazy) teens have nothing to do. Think about it! Would adult criminals think about stealing a video game, which they probably know nothing about?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Two armed men robbed a GameStop..."
It wasn't me! It was the one-armed man! - gnilrets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually... even if you had infinite resolution (and thus no pixelation) you can still have "jaggies" if the 3D models aren't done correctly.
- eric1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I go to school in Davis, so I'm pretty close to Elk Grove. Pretty scary :O
- sethanon87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Playstations 3 stolen from GameStop by armed men"... Returned 2 hours later.
- Kniggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can tell you that the AACS DRM present in both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD actually does communicate a unique identifier back to a server if the device is network connected. They are able to prune the key tree one key at a time, if necessary, using both this network method and using the static key revocation table that exists on every Blu-Ray/HD-DVD disc. These are updated to account for pirates who happen to compromise the security of the device in order to play back unlicensed content.
Don't get me wrong - I hate DRM. But this is the reality and it may actually be possible to cross-reference the serial number of the device with its unique device keys. Note that this could also be done using the HDMI keys or the BD+ protection keys. - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uh....what box, the thieves took your boxes. Now you have 10 unboxes PS3s that you'll hope the people will still buy. Which they probably won't because they were planning to sell it on ebay as brand new and unopened.
- blurtheimage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't this what Sony wanted? Before they announced the price they said that "those who want one, will do what it takes to get one"
- KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I goto school in Folsom, and I can attest that Elk Grove is not a high crime area at all. Still funny though, seeing as how these guys are going to get at least a couple thousand for the ps3's alone.
- Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ 98Acura
Is there a link or something to see this? That is amazing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol this happend 1/2 mile away from my house :P

Right, because there is no way that Sony's on-line service would be able to get machine specific information about a PS3 unit... - GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh jeez. I was just joking with my local Gamestop employees about this yesterday. We wanted to borrow their display boxes and a bag to go walk past the Best Buy line and tell them that Gamestop was already selling the PS3. The Gamestop fellas wanted no part of that riot.
- pizzaface200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I Live in Elk Grove and yes I agree how there is nothing to do in this town for anyone at all not just teenagers.
