- fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Maybe the rootkit thing was never in any way related to the PS3 and still isn't.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This all still doesn't change the fact that if you buy a game from Japan, it will still be in Japanese when you play it.
Now, if they made games have dual audio/text tracks, _that_ would be something. - mofo196, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15This is new and exciting information.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I completely agree.
If I buy it, I want to use it wherever I go. You can't stop people listening to CD's wherever they go, so why should any other media be different?
Oh, and HOORAY! Maybe this is a sign of things to come?
Jimzip :D - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Basically, now modchip makers have no "legal" excuse to make modchips, now that imports can be played out of the box. Is this a boon or a curse?
- ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This is the first news about the PS3 that hasn't made me yawn or cringe. Now we won't have to hope and pray for American releases over here.
1) See it.
2) Buy it.
3) Play it.
That's how it should be. - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Excellent! Sounds like Sony understands the consumer better than anyone. Let us play international games, let us install 3rd party operating systems, and watch sales skyrocket. Open up the technology!
PS3 is going to rule! - Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14This article has a more attractive headline. Thats probably why it was dugg to the front. Abbreviations in titles are bad.
- spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Sigh.
Source link: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/697/697656p1.html - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9These are very interesting developments, and of all the companies in the world Sony would be the last company i would have guessed that would support such a policy. I wonder if Nintendo will follow suit and make all the Revolution's (or Go! if the rumors are correct) games region free...
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Smart move.. Region locking needs to die, now.
- LTrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Good. All consoles should be region free.
- Mulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does this include DVD regions also?
- DarthPilatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe this extends directly from the Australian court decision that circumventing regional coding doesn't break copyright and copy protection laws. They can't stop chipping so why support that industry!
See, we do rule... - PhantomaZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm assuming this will allow me to play imported PS2 games as well then? Great news in any case.
- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does this mean that imported PS1 and PS2 games will play on any PS3?
- nads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anything to take the anti-competitive edge of companies is good news, let's jsut hope thing will alunch this decade! Question is what's their reason for doing it?
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For the 360, it depends on the game. Some games are region free. This article summary (haven't RTFA yet) claims that all games will be region free.
- Jimzip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's too much money to make everything multi-language wherever you buy it. But who knows.
Most of the time the games are able to have their language changed anyway.
Jimzip :D - RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not new news, but it's still a good move by Sony anyway.
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No region lock out most likely means that release dates will be worldwide. Which means most games will have English and Japanese dialog and text on the same disc. Most like what is played will be decided by the hardware.
- SuperQuack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is freaking awesome. I'm looking forward to ps3 even more now. I wonder if ps1/2 stuff will be region free as well.
- mikes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2awsome, Now I hope that dosn't mean its going to cost an arm and a leg and/or push the release date back
- johnsee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Say goodbye to mod chips. The sole reason they are legal in most coutries is because it allows you to buy legitematly purchased games from other countries
- Ignorant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Isn't the PSP region free for games as well? The movies on UMD or BluRay will still have regions.
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Actually I beat that one with mine: http://digg.com/gaming/Sony_confirms_the_PS3_will_be_Region_Free
-- but yeah dupe wins suck; it's really the worst thing about digg and seems so easy to fix.
PS: for the " better title wins" people, No... it's not true; anyone who's followed digg for any amount of time, esp. submitters, knows there are factors other than title. There's a large luck factor that favours the dupers... especially in "who" happens to notice a digg.. if Kevin Rose comes along after a long day recording diggnation and the first link that catches his eye is a dupe; his digg alone will send the dupe skyrocketing past the first post. What other diggs were in the queue (esp. in the same category) at the time of the first post has a large impact. Anyway, "best title wins" just _sounds_ good as an argument; mostly because people who deny it are just dismissed as bitter even when they're not. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo cartridge systems have been region-free forever. In some cases, you just have to get them to physically fit. But the handheld stuff was always region free.
Not a first for Sony either, as PSP is region-free for games (not movies). - FireStrife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know a solution the backup games problem would be if sony allowed you to copy the games to the hard drive with some sort of protection. But its highly unlikely and would need to develop a new system to prevent the piracy problem with that aspect.
- Kolenka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Elranzer
Actually, the 360 is /not/ region-free. The hardware will comply with any region code on the game disc, just like DVD drives. Even with DVDs you have region 0 (region-free), but the players usually aren't region-free. As long as the 360 honors region codes, it isn't region-free. There are region-free 360 games though. :)
As for the PS3... well, it looks like it will follow the PSP: Region-free. - Kolenka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Correction to your correction: The 3 regions refer to movies specifically.
As for games, it could go either way, IMO, BUT... the PSP did go region-free, and going region-free with the PS3 games does have business benefits to let them attack piracy in countries where the region lockouts gave mod-chips designed for 'backups' something that was legal to hide behind.
Of course, the unconfirmed rumor is that Kutaragi was never a fan of region codes in games to begin with, and is using the PSP to show that you can effectively make it difficult on users to pirate without them, and that import sales of games increases license revenue to Sony for games that never leave a particular region. - Superfito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I might be wrong since I'm not a game developer, but won't launching games worldwide extend the development cycle quite a bit, especially some of the Asian devs? Also, distribution would be incredibly tough. I wonder how retailers are going to feel about region free games.
- Fentekreel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OH and once again....not NEW news

and for the sensationalist out there
http://digg.com/hardware/_Blue-Ray_Region_Coding_Announced_-_Japan_and_US_Same_Region_Code_
please do a little looking around....this was an easy google search....
http://www.google.com/search?q=Blue-Ray+region+coding&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official - Memx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now i can buy one for my lil bro without worrying about what games will he be able to play
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony smartened up. They'll have so many new fans that it isn't even funny.
- BBad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nah just because games are region free doesn't force developers to make the games dub in different language, unless they are marketing the game to all markets at the same time. There are many more gba/ds/psp games out in japan than in the US and while these games are region free they are not marketed to all markets even though they work on systems for all markets.
Taking the region lock off of console mean people who want the import version can freely do so knowing it will work on there hardware without having to do any mods to it.
Point in case there are Japanese games on the PS2 like Namco vs Capcom that's out in Japan, I could import ...., but it wont work on my US only PS2 now if this was a PS3 game I could at least be able to play the game on my system since it's region free, I may not fully understand it but I'm free to import it knowing it would work in the system. Hand-held have been able to do this for years, it's about time consoles follow suit. - cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article specifically states the regions for the games. Besides, Sony licenses DVD technology (like everybody else) so they have to follow their rules. Yes I know Sony is one of the founders, but they still have to follow the same rules as everybody else. No region free movies.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder why people do not realize that this is not a "customer" thing, this is a time saving idea. In my opinion, Sony went on a spree of cutting things to save time and ensure a 2006 release. I am happy that there will be a region free console, but Sony is, as usual, not "looking out for the good of the customer".
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The region coding thing on game consoles was mostly because of differences in TV standards. Even Japanese and US TV's both being NTSC have differences in the way the color is handled. Modern game consoles are designed for HDTV's where this is no longer an issue. Handhelds bring there own TV hence why they have historically been region free. I thought it was well known for ages now that the PS3 was going to be region free just like the PSP is. As far as if the Revolution will be region free or not. Well that depends on if all the rumors that the system is designed for standard TV's only or not are true.
- jumjum, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'm surprised Sony would do this too, seeing as they have a movie division. I'm still angry at Sony for the whole Bleem fiasco years ago.
- punisher18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DUH!!!
not to be a smart ass but ive been saying this was going to happen for a long ass time now...no one ever listens.
anyone remember the old rumor from an australian sony branch that gave hint the system was going to be region free ? i do .
oh and i do put my foot in my mouth about the spring release .but hey only wrong about one thing ;) haha. - yuriko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This IS news! Just think bout it. Region free means you can source hardware and software from around the world (in cheaper places like HK). Which means cheaper consoles and games region free !
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this is awesome, I'll be able to buy FIFA 2007 european version (french language) and play it on a USA PS3.
What I really want though, is MGS4 in original japanese with english subs. - mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good, great even; but too bad It's coming out so late. This endeavor of Sony could be their last.
- isakn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats a smart move. especially by sony. i think they are trying to get some respect back in the online community.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Plus that means you should be able to play any imported games that you couldn't before.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now that is a good question. If it doesn't have any region encoding, then will dvd's still play?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at least it can use some of the 60 gigs on the disks
but the thing is if a price for a game changes in a country they would start buying games out of area, cutting down sales in some countrys - chimona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Dragonecc
apparently english isn't "globally," moron
i really hope you were kidding - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This seems like the best option for a supposed "World wide simultaneous" launch... pump out volumes of games and just have all the languages as an option, or for storyline-nonintensive games put English only...
Plus, now games such as Katamari Damacy which can be played without needing an in-depth understanding of the Japanese language can be brought to the US without gamers throwing temper tantrums. - baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Surely!! it cant be!! That's magic, that means that it may come out all over the world at the same time!! Woo!
