And John Carmack is hardly a nobody; - merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/764/764837/vids_1.html

actual gameplay is what people are looking for... - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3he wasn't 'trash talking' his ex-employer, he simply voiced his opinion (not breaking the nda) about the ps3, which he happens to be involved in the development for a project for it.
he's just unlucky that sony wanted a scapegoat (of sorts) because his opinion could be labelled as 'damaging.' - CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm.. I think it was a bad move on Sony's part to fire this guy.
Sure he said some things that were really not good, BUT cause Sony fired him everyone is going to look at him and say "He speaks the TRUTH" people are now going to think that the PS3 is not going to be special, its really going to lack the power Sony has been saying and that the Xbox360 is more powerful. He was fired over it so Its most likely True.
If Sony was smart they should have just left the guy alone that way people would just assume it was some stupid Xbox-Fanboy Joke.
This is going to hurt them. - mrtibbs309, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3he implied that sony is behind schedule with their box, and when they do ship there will probably be minimal content. it won't be until the second or third wave of games that the system reaches into its potential. . . thereby embarrassing sony
- ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know what he expected.
But thanks for the heads up. I guess Ill save for the XBox 360 price drop and Halo 3 release. - xenodata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is a link to his comments in full.

The timing couldn't be worse for Sony. When you want to launch a console in the spring, you don't want to keep the negative rumors to build up by not showing anything concrete, not even a single running system. The whole gaming world is in a state of great expectation, and the slightest negative rumor can take catastrophal proportions in a few days.
My take? Probably Sony's PR is in damage control now, but they can't do anything, because Sony keeps any information under lock and key. - vann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, if you read the interview, you'll see that he vetted the article with several fellow employees, including a producer, before he published it and they all said this might "ruffle some feathers," but was a far cry short of a firable offense. He also speaks highly of Sony Corporate, even *after* they fired him. It seems like this fellow was well-meaning and surprised that commenting on essentially benign, publically known facts could get him fired.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2poor guy got fired just for stating the truth
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That means the Ps3 is *****
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3so a guy who was fired is trash-talking his ex-employer?
that never happens. - JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think he's lucky that he didn't get hit in the head with a boomerang controller as he was leaving.
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The PlayStation was orginally an add on for the SNES with a partnership between Nintendo and Sony but Nintendo decided to drop it, and Sony decided to keep it. And that's how the PS1 was born.
- sspooner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been developing code for over 25 years now. I'm lucky enough to be self employed and making a very good living.
One thing I learned early on, which this guy has yet to learn, is that you don't bite the hand the feeds you, you don't even nibble or suck hard on it.
This guy may not have broke the NDA, but he stood up in front of the world and voiced his negative opinion about an unreleased product. This was really, amazingly dumb.
I'd have fired him too.
If I was about to hire him, I'd have googled his name and came up with this ... then I would not have hired him.
It won't take long before he does this again and gets fired again. - xenodata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here it is again, in case those are taken offline too.
http://www.genmay.net/showthread.php?t=608478 - roscoe2041, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the PS1's controller was ganked from the SNES. Don't you remember the diamond button formation? All Sony did was add more shoulder buttons (wow!)and slap those little handles on the side for the rest of your fingers to grip onto.
- mdepolli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Revolution all the way, baby.
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Reason he was fired:
"Now in my opinion it doesn’t matter how good the PS3 is. If the XBOX 360 is better, then it doesn’t really matter how the cell processors work or how good they say it is. Realistically one of them will be better over all. Now I’ve spoken with people who are on the technical side of the PS3. I’ve also talked with people on the technical side of the XBOX 360. The consistent comment I am hearing from people on my end is, “The XBOX 360 is better”. They are saying that it is capable of just doing more. (shrugs) Now take that for what its worth. If you watch all the videos on the PS3 they will say how much more powerful it is than the XBOX and vice versa. Im just telling you what I am hearing." - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3fact of the matter is he has seen the ps3 in action and is not impressed, what's there not to believe? he obviously worked for sony and had access to the console and it was a big enough deal for sony to fire him. It all means something. I also really doubt he is a xbox fanboy or whatever you ridiculous people are saying seeing as how he worked for sony and probably had access to any ps2 games and accessories.
- volcan96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Moyn, excellent comments.

Looks pre-rendered to me! I kid, I kid. That was the last time around. - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he never really trashed talked the company, he simply said from what he saw it wasnt a next gen console and he was concerned about the system.
- mrredsun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The guy's a 3D artist. He wasn't paid to know or understand how the PS3 works. That's what programmers are for. He's paid to create artwork within the limits of the game engine that should be optimized for the console. Game art development consists of making the best model or animation on a PC within expected limits and then being told that the limits are actually much more limiting than you were initially told. That's usually where the disappointment sets in. Just because he isn't a programmer doesn't mean he can't tell which features he would have liked in the PS3. An artist wants the tools to make things look the way HE (or SHE) wants them to look.
It really doesn't help to tear down this guy because his frank assertions contradict your belief in Sony. Nor should you do it with such disregard for grammar or knowledge of the video game industry. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0poor guy..
- howie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I’m still in awe at the whole uproar over what amounts to NO information."
Yeah, no information. It's not like you revealed how crappy the PS3 could turn out to be. - staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would just like to add that everytime Sony releases something new.......they say it's the "Killer" whatever product.
Remember how Sony said that the Bean MP3 player will be the iPod killer?
Xbox Live killer? or even Xbox 360 killer?
WTF ever!!!! - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Xbox 360 is a failure and its launch was a disaster.

That only leaves one console maker left to rule... - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The PS1 never launched with analog sticks. They were added to the controller after the N64 debuted. If Sony is "inventive" at anything it was taking whatever Nintendo made and doubling it (i.e. shoulder buttons and analog sticks.)"
I believe that credit should go to sega...they had a controller made for "nights" that had an an log thumb stick. But you could go back even further to the Vectrex which had a mini analog joystick on its controller. Cant give Nintendo the credit for coming up with this one. Plus lets be honest it was a natural progression anyway. - Superfito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/764/764837/vids_1.html
Looks next-gen to me."
Wow...both you and IGN have this one messed up. Project Offset is being developed for PC and that is what this engine demo is for. The Offeset guys said that they are trying to get it to BOTH the 360 and the PS3 also. Your point has no bearing.
Why does it always seem like a lot of gamers circle jerk around the concept of "next gen" graphics? All three systems are going to look amazing and they should because they have better technology. Is that truly next generational?. The true next generation involves things such as online integration, AI, Social interaction with other gamers and other elements that actually effect the gameplay. Until HD-DVD and Blu-ray are needed for gameplay reasons, all they do is drive up a machine that should be used to play games. - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Has any company ever had 3 # 1 consoles?"
Only if you count handhelds. - Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don’t need to know how to code for the Xbox to know that I’d rather have soft shadowing in a game."
I'm sorry. . .my mind isn't working now due to lack of sleep, but what does this mean? Is he implying that the 360, or the PS3 has trouble with soft shadowing?? And I agree that him getting himself fired was a really dumb idea. The "biting the hand that feds you" saying is the first thing that came to mind. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2>>but was a far cry short of a firable offense.
Wholeheartedly disagree. Look at it from Sony corporate's point of view, you know, the employer. You've got this device in development and are not too far away from releasing it into an extremely volatile market. Some schlub that works for you blabs to the press with his opinion that the device is inferior to another device in the same market. It is directly counter to what the marketing department is trying to do. Now you have to spend even more company money to deal with the bad publicity that came from someone that works for you. Fireable offense. Sony can't shut the guy up (outside of trade secret type stuff), but they don't have to keep paying him when he's out there trashing the companies products in public.
How long do you figure someone would last at Microsoft if they ran their mouth to the press that Windows was inferior to Linux? How long would someone last at GM if they told the press that Toyota was better than Chevy? It's business. And it's part of being employed to know that you can't trash the company or its products in public if you want to keep your job at said company. As I said above, if I had an employee that told the local paper that a competitor was better than me, I'd call him into my office and tell him he should probably send his resume to that competitor, because he ain't working' here anymore. - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it is nice that he told the public how he felt about the development of the system, but still, when you bad-mouth a product this big you are going to get a lot of bad attention from your bosses. Too bad that he got fired, but he seems happy that he was let go.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would at least say that the PS3 is more next-gen than the Xbox 360 is.
Nintendo is making the ONLY next-gen system. If you're looking for innovation, that's the way to look.
If you're looking for a powerful system that will get most of the high-budget must-haves I think Sony is the direction that you want to go. Unless Nintendo's Rev. really does turn a lot of heads... - punisher18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i only looked at the facts in the article, if you want those facts again find my comment above. numbers and facts were wrong so case in point hes talking out his ass about something he may have never even touched.
and why is it such a big flippin deal about the blu-ray ? this IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THEYVE USED IT! anyone get a PSX ? i did and i love the thing. i still use it ,just finished shadow of the colossus on it. the psx is basically a ps2 with blu-ray .
the guy broke very obvious NDA standards with both sony and who ever he worked for on the demo with for e3. so of course he got fired.
just wait for the thing to come out THIS spring as soon as they dont deliver then you can start to bad mouth sony but until then youre still talking out your asses. they have it slated for spring and it isnt spring yet. yes sony is keeping quiet about their console but thats all theyre doing...keeping quiet about something not released. - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well I do think that Sony had every reason to fire this dude. He was talking smack (even if it may be true) about one of their major products. Something like this, if picked up by enough web sites could easily cost Sony tons of money in the end. So of course he got fired.
However, I am noticing a trend with Sony. They keep screwing with the consumer, and I for one am happy that this guy spoke up.. Remember what happened to Dreamcast? Some say that "pirating" of games is what caused the Dreamcast to die, but I just dont buy that.(when you look at the percentage of people at the time that had the ability or knowledge to do it, it was pretty low) What really killed it was an over hyped console being made by Sony. If you look at some of the games near end of the Dreamcast and compare them to even second generation PS2 games you can see that the Dreamcast could easily hang. And as consumers we paid the price, by losing one of the best consoles of all time, imo by the Sony hype machine. Now we fast forward to the PSP. Everywhere you saw the PSP displayed before it was out, you saw it next to a gran turismo game. The game had all the packaging and everything. They also said that it woule be a near perfect port of the ps2 GT4, which we all know now wont be true. Also had some nice video of GT4 mobile (even though it was just FMV) this led many customers to believe that the game would be out pretty soon. After all why else would they have packaging showcased before the system was even out? Now its been how long? still no signs of that game at all for the console. They also let us down with other games as well. I still like my PSP, but I am finding that I am playing my DS more and more. I'm also getting really tired of Sony not fixing their products. I cant tell you how many PS2's I tried to fix because of laser failure. Sony would almost never replace their faulty product, no matter how wrong they were. They would ALWAYS find a way to blame it on the owner of the system. One of the times they turned me down (of many) was because, wait for it.........was because I had the PS2 plugged into a filtered power strip. So OF COURSE they couldnt fix it now. After all a clean power source is always the killer of modern electronics. Not to mention Sony and the "flicker" problem that plagued many crt HDTV's.
(took me over a year and many many many many many many phone calls to get a replacement) 3 of my friends who had the same problem with their TV's are still stuck with their faulty products (yes they had a repair shop fix the flicker, but they wrecked the picture, by killing convergence etc.... TV's are unwatchable now) And now we are seeing more vaporware from Sony in attempt to down play the 360 (and the revolution) when in reality, it will probably be at best only marginally more powerful then the 360 when the polygon hits the screen.
I would just like to finish by saying that I have always been a huge fan of Sony, but I'm getting kinda tired of the way they are treating their consumers. I really hope they turn it around, cause I know of many people that are getting tired of it. Oh and that whole root-kit thing didnt really help them either :)
/rant - Deinonych, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well put, Samdu. =)
- pingomx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He is not saying something about the PS3, because he said that the PS3 don't even exists, so he can be saying anything good or bad about it, he only had contact with PS3Dev kits, and never, I say Never will be the same to play with a DevKit and the console itself !, and always when somebody is fired, (because something you did wrong inside a company) you'll feel a big hate for it... anyways is just ONE person against PS3 (for the obvious), and it would be the same if he had worked for the 360.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nintendo games aren't the kind of games I really enjoy. I think they're capitalizing on the hipster underdog thing well and sucking in all the sad people who identify themselves by how "cool" their home electronics are. Apple cult anyone?
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like Sony cult also.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Phreshness: "Ahh, aren't you forgetting those insignificant dual analog sticks?"
The PS1 never launched with analog sticks. They were added to the controller after the N64 debuted. If Sony is "inventive" at anything it was taking whatever Nintendo made and doubling it (i.e. shoulder buttons and analog sticks.) - vincejose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still excited about the Xbox 1.0 I got last November. No console is truly "next gen" when it launches. I've seen 6 or 7 360 games and they look good but I wouldn't say they were a whole generation ahead of anything on the Xbox. Time will tell.
- GRIMREAPER187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you meen to tell me that a the extra development of the ps3 won't give them an edge over xbox360 just a little?
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is no ps3 its just a myth
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to the first post who said everyone had a SNES. well i had a turbogfx16 back then. and guess what, they even made something called the neogeo which was even more money than the turbogfx16! there will always be a more expensive and less expensive option.
- TheWiredNerv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony has been falling apart. It seems that a good deal of sony's future is being placed in the PS3. Sony needs to do something that doesn't make the masses pissed off at them (rootkits + false reviews)
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So was the name "Atari" at one point...
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony has pissed off a lot of people but they should try to keep their developers in line and not by punishing them. The developers won't deliver much if they don't have the resources to develop with. The corporates at Sony only focus on the final product and seem to think the details will work out by ***** magic. As they say you ***** in one hand, want in the other and see which one you have more of. Right now Sony can't deliver ***** to it's developers which does not lend itself well to the future of the final product. I'm beginning to wonder with Sony's sudden silence on the PS3 if we'll ever see a PS3 or will we see some renamed upgrade of the PS2 as the next Sony gamer.
