- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -13/+31Well that doesn't matter, because you won't be playing games running on your PS3 on your PSP, that makes absolutely no sense at all. How would it display the real-time graphics of the games you're playing? What would the PS3 be transmitting to the PSP to enable such functionality? A streaming video encoded in real time with no lag? I don't think so.
This is strictly for media content, as in, video, audio and pictures. Just like you can hook the XBOX 360 up to a Windows PC and access media. This actually isn't very useful unless you're actually planning on storing all of your media content on your PS3 instead of on your computer. Why would you store all of your videos, movies, music and pictures on a PS3 instead of your PC?
I think Microsoft has the right idea and I agree with their approach. Living room electronics equipment isn't for storing or managing all of your media, it's just for playing it. Consoles and other equipment should be an "extender", enabling you to access centrally-stored data on your PC. Using the console itself to store all of the media just raises a bunch of problems, the major ones being compatibility issues and software limitations. - triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8i believe the plan is to have most of the ps1 catalog available for download which would be playable on the psp.
- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15How many games will this work for? The PSP doesn't feature the extra analog stick and triggers. I doubt many games will actually be playable.
- nmoline, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It would work the same as playing them on a tv in my opinion. You could play anything on your PSP regardless of graphics capability of the PSP because it would be used only as a screen/monitor.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The analog stick is fine, works as expected.
- dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Theoretically playing remotely could work. A hardware mpeg-4 encoder could read the video buffer and stream it over the network. It would be an incredible feat of engineering to do so, would have a limited framerate, and be prone to at least a little lag, both from encoding/decoding time and transmission time.
Additionally, making such functionality would be of very limited use. While playing a game requiring more power than a handheld has is interesting, even a small delay in control makes most games unplayable. - carl0ski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I personally think this is not a bad idea at all
Cell processor has more than enough power to scale down images to a PSP resolution in real time.
downmix Audio to 2 channel in real time and stream it accross the internet.
The only foreseeable problem will be lack of PSP joystick.
Don't forget HD BluRay games arent all the PS3 will house
don't forget premium game downloads that you will be buying and keeping on your PS3. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6you could probably play the e-distribution (arcade) games. Or at least some of them. So yes, you will be able to play games from your ps3 on your psp, if they decide to do so.
- davidmackey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Funny how the anti-Sony marks bust in here and quickly deny that this would work. Have you ever watched a live stream on the internet? That's how this works. It streams video over the network or internet to your PSP screen. Then your inputs are sent back over to the PS3 and processed there. The PSP does not have to have the same power that the PS3 has because everything gets processed on the PS3. Hell i bet this could work on a cell phone instead of a psp.
About the lag, we're not living in dial up days anymore. We've got such high speeds now that these kinds of ideas can be implemented. The amount of data that is sent over the internet when you use the controls is so small that it would produce no lag. - Gunegune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope this is a step toward LocationFree on the PS3.

This is what I was referring to..at 1:30 in, it shows the UMPC syncing up with a game.......i must of confused it with Microsofts origami - Sophistifunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@CrimsonBlur:
They've almost got it right. They've got it right from a business perspective at least. Why the ***** do I need a copy of MC to stream video to my XBOX? You can't even ***** BUY media center without a new pc (legally). It's such a ***** scam. Like XP can't stream a divx. - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do this,
1) hook up your favorite game system to a tivo or other DVR
2 Try to play a game
3) experience what it would be like to play PS3 games remotely
This is an ok idea for media (movies, music, etc) but it would not work for gaming, there is just no way to eliminate the lag, even at close range. - triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4your confusing using the handheld as a controller, and getting the console to send playable games to the handheld.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You guys, lets stop and think for a moment. If sony allows you to buy PS1 and PS2 games over the interwebs directly to your PS3, don't you think the PSP would have enough power to atleast push those 2 consoles? I think it would. Perhaps that is what its ment for..
Just an idea. - cutebanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1using PSP for the PS3 ? yeah that's my idea too :)
http://www.cutebanana.com/index.php?s=zune - fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, a $250 controller + dead pixels !!!
- Pharaoh777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is for games as well. Sony can easily send out a firmware update for both systems that scales down the PS3 resolution to PSP size and streams it over the internet. It would be just like using a remote desktop (except much faster). This would definitely come in handy if I were travelling and didn't want to bring the PS3 with me - but still wanted to play some games.
Nintendo and Microsoft fanboys really need to stop trying to make good things done by Sony out as bad things. You get what you pay for, and this is just one example of what you get when you pay a premium for a videogame system (or in this case 2). - TECHSev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3hmm he way I see it is more like your PS3 becomes a persistent server world
lets use wiis for now, picture this
Animal crossing Wii, while it's running, anyone near a wifi hotspot with their DS or their wii could connect to it and play on it.
now for the ds it would require a new ds cart but PSP has the luxary of have a re-wiretable memory card, so you could save the application on the memory card.
honestly, I think that would be really cool - dancpsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3By the time you included mpeg-4 hardware encoders, and fast enough networking, it would be cheaper just to put in a 3D chip in the tablet.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6You know, WhereAmI, I keep waiting for the day when I'll get bored of burying you but so far it has yet to come.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@gstuartj
Deal! I owe nothing if they dont revolutionize, and just in case they do, I get to see someone suffer! - Thmstec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yes, MS has shown this, although they haven't really made it easy to do or even released it from what I remember. Although I have seen some displays from philips that aren't tablets, they are just a "dumb" keyboard, mouse, and monitor. But, there is too much lag in the philips solution for real-time gaming.
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This isn't a new or revolutionary idea. Atari had planned on (and announced) offering the same type of playability option using the Atari Lynx in tandem with the Atari Jaguar before the company ran out of money and essentially collapsed. The idea is to use the handheld game system as a "smart" controller.
Nintendo has also paid lip-service to this feature since the release of the GameCube. To my knowledge, one of the few titles that supports this was a multiplayer version of Pac-Man by Namco. But perhaps GameCube/GameBoy Advance owners might be aware of other titles that I am not familiar with that offer similar game play options. - TECHSev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I don't think it's going to be the full on game neither, but maybe a dumb down simpler version of the game to accomidate
and it doesn't mean it will be used on every game (or any) but the concept is cool - jordanlund, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1A couple of problems with this... as others pointed out the PSP doesn't have enough buttons to do PS1, 2 or 3 games. But when it comes to the PS3 there's also no tilt sensor which, I would think, is going to be a big gameplay element on the new machine. They are going to have to make up for the loss of rumble by over-using the tilt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3There is no way they're going to support playing PS3 *games* on the PSP. That's not what the article is about. Simple, they say you'll be able to navigate the PS3 menu, stream audio/video... queue downloads, use the online store... etc... But no, you won't be able to stream games to your PSP.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2uhm. no.... a tablet pc is a pc so how would that be any different than just running it on the tablet pc other than it would lag alot if the desktop or something has to do all the processing and send it back and forth all the time.
- triplehelix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3gstuartj who knows how they plan on doing it. maybe the ps3 sends one level at a time to the psp or something.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Ha! If they revolutionize gaming with the PS3, I'll cut off my ballsack and have it shipped to you. Deal?
- bdurkin, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I agree with WhereAmI. What about game sharing which the PSP has now. PlayStation revolutionized gaming and now they are going to revolutionize it a 3rd time but I guess that is just my opinion since I don't have a time machine.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Uh, no. Do you really think that lag won't be generated in the time it takes for the PS3 to compress real-time video and send it over a standard home 300Kbps upstream connection to your PSP? It will be unplayable.
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1"we imagine the PSP being used just to display game footage sent to it by the PS3 and send back controller data input by the player."
WOW a 200$ mini TV!
marked as inaccurate. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3I think ... they have ... bigger problems .... right now
- martinj88, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Didn't Microsoft say there planing something like this.....soo you can play PC games on a tablet PC...........just by transmitting the PC screen to your tablet then the controls from your tablet to the PC........I'm sure there was a video showing it
