This isn't Bubsy 3D, pal. - Jakesweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow that game sucks LOL
- gene, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If memory serves, the first game was made in the 50's on an oscilloscope, "Tennis for Two".
- Ethan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Technically speaking, Tennis for Two wasn't the first videogame - it was in fact A.S. Douglas's 1952 Naughts and Crosses.
- jamiejamez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Tennis for Two" and "OXO" came out before Spacewar
- coyforce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, Tennis For Two, but this is still sweet. Blast From The Past! + DIGG

* Completely FREE
* Source code is FREE and AVAILABLE
Requirements
I have used it on a 486 66 MHz with 16 MBs of RAM.
It should run on any computer capable of running windows.
The source code should run on both Visual C++ 5.0
(some modification may be required) and Borland C++ 5.02 - IamZed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw Spacewar played at NCR once as a kid. They fashioned two control boxes out of wood you held in your hand. I say saw, because no adult in the room would give up one moment of play to an actual kid.
- kernel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0amusing, but after a while it gets darn boring!
- jamiejamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hey, how do you play it?"
From the README file:
The "a", "s", "d", "f" keys control one of the spaceships. The "k", "l", ";", "'" keys control the other. The controls are spin one way, spin the other, thrust, and fire. - jamiejamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Noughts and Crosses" A.K.A "OXO" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OXO_%28software%29
We have already had this discussion before http://digg.com/gaming/The_first_Video_Game_was_created_in_1958 - brandonb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't hink this was the first?
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t!
- snookerdoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't work on XP with Firefox AND Adblock. Temporarily disable Adblock and walla!
- Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think KDE has something very similar to this,
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A classic.
digg++ - thegrouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have firefox addblock and windows ex and it works for me.
- coyforce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although, the graphics do seem a bit more advaced than what would be expected from back then.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yes you are so correct, cause the oscilloscope is a computer."
No it's a form of video display. The computer circuits that controlled the images on the oscilloscope were the computer. Sarcasm defeated! - jamiejamez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Although, the graphics do seem a bit more advaced than what would be expected from back then."
Again from the README file:
The code is extremely faithful to the original. There are only two changes. 1)The spaceships have been made bigger and 2) The overall timing has been special cased to deal with varying machine speeds. - chiklit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'i have firefox addblock and windows ex and it works for me."
Same here. (Minus the spelling errors...) - Sharky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah KDE comes with this game, K Space Duel.
- jla1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very awesome!
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I guess we know where the idea for Asteroids came from...
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@digitol
It's THAN, not THEN. - araknd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A copy of this game came on cassette with my Apple ][ which had all of 4K.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell this game is to good to play on XP anyway.
- rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, this was the first game created. Not tennis for two.
- bloodguard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I played this at work on a PDP11-44 way back in ye olden days.
+digg - WillDearborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you mean there were games before half-life 2?
- theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found a hot coffee secret hell yea ! oNeone
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Needless to say, if you have NoScript enabled, you'll have to enable mit.edu for it to work.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I rather play this than 99.9999% of the BS made for the Ninten-X-Station-DS.
- peterinwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In 1967 I started working for the company Information International. One of the members of the board of directors of this small company was an MIT professor so we had close ties.
In addition, the company rented space in the same building as Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) and through that tie we received some of their serial one new computers... I remember going up through the numbers with the PDP-n series.
Spacewar was such a novelty that we showed it to all our customers and even displayed it on the console at trade shows to attract attention even though it had nothing to do with our business.
Like kids with their video games today, I probably played it for hundreds of hours till Atari came along and I bought Pong for my kids! Then Superman.... and Spacewars was history. - lon3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0way better than doom 3
- Merlinhoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My Brother would take me to Funway in Batavia, IL. to play this game.
http://www.funwaybatavia.com/
Spacewars was this big box of one of many games they had there.
you could set to do all kinds of things like suck you into the middle
or repell you from it. you could have the sides stop you or have it so you went from one side and
show up on the opposite. They don't have this quarter eater anymore. We use to get stoned out of our minds and get consumed by this monster of a game.
The best game that comes even close to this right now is Alien Battlecraft Arena http://www.jaibo.net/abarena/
- More than 100 different spaceship components
- Five game modes including DeathBattle, Team DeathBatlle, and Fatal Battle
- Stunning graphics, including cool explosions and debris
- 3D sound with seven music themes
- Advanced computer AI
- Two unique alien races
- Many powerups and bonuses
- Realistic space objects such as asteroids, planets, and comets
- Randomly generated space background graphics with real space photos
- More than 40 weapons
- Internet high-score table
- Joystick, Gamepad and Mouse support - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of the old vector games on the Master System.
- billizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not frist game ever, but a neat game (for its time) from the begining erra of computer games.
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Works fine on my Firefox and XP system
- Rummey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really hard to play by yourself, try to control both ships and fight for more than 2 seconds
- andreizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does it run on Linux?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0W00T!!!

- Phaedrus73, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yes you are so correct, cause the oscilloscope is a computer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Cool!
Kiltak
