- hwrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It doesn't just play based on how active your brain is. It can tell what you're telling the game to do based on the helment ant it's sensors. We've been discussing this product in my Cognitive Science classes. In a racing game, if you want to turn left, then you think about turning left. It's amazing.

"You mean you have you use your hands? That's like a baby's toy" - CutRock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry to burst any body's bubbles, but it seems that this 'controller' is actually just a monitor to see how active your brain is. From what I got out of the article, there is no actual controlling going on at all. All that is taking place is that the SMART is taking readings on how active your brain is and gives you feed back as to how you can reach a more in depth concentration.
- geek_xyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, now I can throw my head on the floor when I get pissed off at a game.
- numba1xclusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with CutRock. It just seemed like the helmet is just a tool to measure your EEG levels, not actually control the thing with your brain. Then whats the point of including a controller with it -_-
- paintist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a minute, let me get this straight.
Thought => raising or lowering EEG level => hooked up to something that takes these readings => depending on the reading causes something to happen on the monitor. So.. wouldn't changing your thinking cause something different to happen on the monitor? Sounds like you are controlling it with your brain... - hwrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The regular controller is just used in the beginning to help "train" the device.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Given the general IQ (or rather, lack thereof) of today's gamers I doubt any device which requires the use of thinking will succeed.
- edtheretard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what if you subconciously think that you are going to die?
good idea... they should refine it. - persecuted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds and looks like complete and utter BS.
But if it works... it would be the best thing ever. - Auxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is fantastic ... I can't wait for this to become available for PC and XBox.
- Nicto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There have been other attempts at this kind of controller, but this one might have the precision to actually be fun. Although I'm pretty sure that extended use of this thing will cause discomfort and headaches like all the others.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PS2 to Xbox adapter... Then just hook it up to a PC, because the xbox controller is USB.
- hwrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really want one...except the cost is kind of prohibitive at $548...
- Absalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got video footage of this game i played @ nextfest 2004. where they strap this thing to your head and u have to have to push the ball to the other side of the table but there's someone on the other side trying to do the same.. it's pretty cool.
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You still have to play the games with a regular controller ... this sucks, want to be able to control the whole thing with my brain.
- a99tandem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Technically.. you HAVE TO play video games with your brain. Otherwise you'd just be a lifeless carcass.
- podalirius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Video games are now good for you."
what do they mean NOW? when weren't video games good for you? - CognitiveRes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coming soon as an add on for a Nintendo Revolution near you?

- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or score horribly on Nethack.
Oh wait, I already did that while using my brain. - Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like to think of the other possibilities of a device such as this. Of course being the l33t g@m3r that I am, I can't wait to mod one of these to work with everything in my house (toaster included)...BUT
Imagine how useful a device like this could be for someone who is paralyzed. I'm sure there could be a way to have one of these devices help them in everyday life. - paintist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You might want to read "Everything bad is Good for you" by Steven Johnson ;)
- Katixa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi all,
Relax a bit.
Yes, it MAY control a game based on your thinkings.
No, it may not change your mind.
But, lets get things strainght. We are still newbies on this kind of technology. Humans know very little things about our complex brain.
We may have impulses, but to "translate" them into a game is still impossible I think.
I'm not talking about "turn left" or "turn right". You can move a bit your head, muscles, or even your eyes, and that may tell something to the machine.
But what about gear up, gear down, handbrake, jump while striking sword with special move 3, etc?
This is can NOT be done nowadays with a machine. When you want to do that you hit a key. You can THINK doing it, but lets be realistic. There is no machine able to KNOW that you mean "strike 2" when you think about it.
Unless, of course, you can personalize it. This is:
Tutorial:
- Please think on strike 1.
- Again please.
- Again.
- Configured
- Please think on strike 2.
- Again please.
- Again.
- Configured
- Please think on gear up.
- Again please.
- Again.
- Configured
.. and so on.
Then, and MAYBE then, we can play a game that MUST have pre-configured, just thinking.
I still don't believe that a machine can know that I'm thinking on gear up, unless it knows exactly how my impuses are in my brain.
So MAYBE this thing just read up/down/left/right, and you have to shoot, etc. with your controller.
Anyway, I hope that in a few years we have USB4 mind readers to put them in the table and type automatically as we think, so I can write texts even longer than this one :P
Just my two cents. - JustinCase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think there is a bit of misrepresentation here. Here is a snippet from www.smartbraingames.com :
"S.M.A.R.T. BrainGames uses regular fun video games as the training for EEG Neurofeedback. As the player enters and maintains the desired brain state, full control of the game controller is enabled. The game player is able to play the
video game seamlessly. If the player does not maintain the desired state, speed and steering control decrease."
According to this, the EEG Neurofeedback Device serves as a signal inhibiter. Full control will only be regained if the "desired [mental] state" is maintained...
Sounds more like a mind control device then fun to me... - Sferrero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So basically you wear this device that makes you suck at the game unless you are concentrating deeply, in which case it allows you to play the game as if you weren't wearing the device.
ummm, no thanks? - Flook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn!! So close to being the coolest thing ever. To bad all you get to do is improve controls.
You should be able to use the computer to watch your waves and decide what patterns you want to equal up down or a and b button. Would be some real simple software too. - jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, bad typo in the last comment... It should say "...for Bill gates (...) to get all PS2 users..."
- jagnum1fan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** no... I'm not thinking when I play video games...
Besides, how do we know these things aren't gonna reverse on us like the plane did in Stealth. It's just some sly way for Bill Gates (ya, you didn't know he was in on it did you...) to get us to all PS2 users to be tortured in a psyche-fabricated hell where the only technology available to use is a Intel 386 running Windows ME with no internet connection, and abolutely inundated with BSOD errors...
Oooh... or ever better... it causes a BSOD in your head...
***** no... - darkness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The technology would probably be better spent on computers with a sideline on consoles instead of the other way around...
- albinoMithos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im thinkin Newtype from the Gundam Universe when I look at this
- Fitbrains, on 05/11/2009, -0/+0I have been working in the brain fitness space since 2001 and we have come along way. There has been significant scientific studies over the last 5 years that illustrate how we can maintain and develop our cognitive skills through our lifespan. Our company has started to launch pilots that provide more efficacy to our software. I truly believe the next 5 years will see a lot of positive developments in this area.

baaaaahahahahahahhahahahahaaha....
Just so we're clear.. (and I think I ALREADY tried to make this clear) .. is that this device takes READINGS. And depending on those READINGS determines the GAMEPLAY(i.e. movement of the character). This thing is non-invasive, it can't CHANGE your thoughts. You think, it reads, then it causes some other peice of ***** to do something.
How hard of a concept is that to grasp? - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Big deal. Atari MindLink controller, unreleased, 1984.
All your base are belong to Atari. - polymangler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" There is no interactivity or user control over the "game' itself."
that is a quote from the website itself
http://www.smartbraingames.com/video_games.asp
I'd love to have this as a tool to see what games were actually stimulating my brain but alas that's all it would be good for you cannot think about turning left and your race car turn left. It's a "go-no-go" system, so it just has a state of on or off not complex control like 'walk slowly to the northwest'... but it's really exciting to see that this technology might one day turn into a device like that - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*****. They say FPS (shooters) does not "lend itself well" to the device (they also note an excuse because they are violent). Well obviously they're selling this piece of crap way before it's ready. All the games they list as compatible are racing games, or games like tony hawk where you would have to hold/press X whenever needed...
Complete ***** and wayyyyy too early for this to be on the market. More research and then this will ultimately replace nintendo's wand controller and controllers altogether! - thecoolestcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh oh, what if this happens:
http://showcaseentertainment.com/movies/trailers/gamebox.mov - AlteredLogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you CANNOT control the system with just your thoughts. I read the whole FAQ on the site, and it just measures your alertness while you play and stuff. I still think it's pretty cool. also it only really works on racing games and platformers. I wanted to play guilty gear and be able to do all my combos just by thinking, but alas, I cannot.

http://www.smartbraingames.com/product.asp?id=1289 - EPeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It says "works with any standard PlayStation console". Will it work with the ps2, as well?
