http://digg.com/gaming/Stream_DivX_Movies_to_your_XBox_360_ - MCHampster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This isn't playing DivX on your Xbox 360. This is transcoding the file before it is played on the 360. Yeah, it may be more transparent to the user with this piece of software, but the headline is still misleading.
- Kinsbane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13You're not playing DivX on Xbox 360 with this, you're still playing WMV.
- TestFar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11did it?
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The description says "The Xbox Media Center people have released a free download that lets you play DivX and Xvid on your Xbox 360."
- cainrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8i like VLC 360 better its a bit easier to get running, its just a matter of finding the file(movie). You can play .MOV too.
But i tried a 1080p/i version of a .Mov and it wouldn't work. Although i have a 720p version of a WMV and it works. But hey.
VLC 360 download: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=500860 - kilodelta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5hasn't this been available to people for months now?
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ironic that you would dupe the dupe comment!

Of course, if they really wanted to make people happy, they'd have made it possible to install codec support each time a new codec was released.
The solution? XBMC. - mymoustache, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4anyone to whom this article applies knows that xbmc isn't affiliated with ms.
they wish. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll answer that: Everyone who has ever tried Xbox Media Center, Sourceforge's Project of the Year for Game and Media.
- markcrules, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Shame it leaves non Windows XP MCE owners out in the cold...Surely Microsoft can allow XP owners to stream to their 360s. I am kind of disappointed Microsoft wont allow me to stream from my PC because it is not a MCE.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@davegzzy
TC360 is now at beta 2. It now lets you FF, RW, pause, skip ahead and back. Though I've not tried it on an entire movie yet. So I don't know if it chokes sometimes like that last version did. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the 360 was meant to be a media center they should have supported MPEG4 natively. This re-encoding thing is a decent hack but it's not practical for most people.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+262 is still a good temp, my average cpu temp is 50-60
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uhh wtf? This has nothing at all to do with XBMC...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Transcode 360 is *******.
You'll be lucky if you can get through one movie without the video just randomly stopping and the MC interface giving you a "Session Terminated" or "Limited Host Resources" error (when there is none).
Ugh. Someone please come out with something better... - roach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually I think the goal is to have DRM.
- fatalfury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for this! I've actually had to re-encode all my xvid files to play on my 360
- ashleyhancock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Erm...this is like 5 months old! It also works with .mov and .rm as I pointed out here:
http://www.runtime360.com/?p=9 - envytwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK...Stupid, this console device most of us paid well over 400 dollars for is a device that is more then a GAME console. Its a multimedia device that WANTS you to play movies and music from your computer on it.
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this has been possible for a long time...
- diargasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow, that sucks. I am appreciative of this app, but something official would be so much better.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Arghh bury this guy, he linked to his own site. I accidently dugg him.... Where's my undo button digg!? WHERE!?
- Dennis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This has been around the forums at Xbox-Scene. I am using it. It is pretty good, but still doesn't play my .mov, mp4 files. Another thing is that the audio syncing can get bad, and unlike XBMC, you can't adjust it yet.
- zebwinz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When it says fast computer, make sure you've got one. The instant i start transcoding, my cpu temp jumps from 45-48 degrees C to 62 and up! And if you forget to push the transcode button again to stop, it will just keep on using up those CPU cycles....That said, having not tried another program yet, it works pretty well.
- FourDoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'm sure part of the MS goal is to have you upgrade to Vista down the road so that you can stream video to your 360.
And this is bit of old news as transcode360 has been out for quiete some time now and dugg here to the front page a few times. The latest version actually lets you skip forward and backwards through the transcoded video as opposed to the original version where you were stuck just streaming straight with no ff/rw features. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ crass...
Licensing is part of the problem. Another part is the believe that Divx = piracy. Microsoft is covering their own ass. But the good thing is, they are not blocking plug-ins like this and VLC. Matter of fact, I've been running TC360 for months now. I learned about VLC about a month ago. I have both installed and all my bases covered.
But TC360 will choke on some things and refuse to play files that G-Spot says is using the Divx codec. VLC hasn't had a problem with anything that I threw at it, including movies still sitting in .bin format. The only downsides to VLC is you have to use picture controls in VLC. So your FF, RW, Etc. will not work. You also have to browse to the file that you want to play. Oh, and if you want to play DVD isos you have to edit a file to change the language from French to English.
I heard a rumor somewhere that Runtime and (whoever made VLC360) has been talking. If they could combine the ease of use of TC360 along with the compatibility and CPU friendliness of VLC360 we will have a great program. - crossers, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0good if works! now I will see does it works or not!

http://www.pmidsig.org - davegzzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't read all of the posts so I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this but this app has been around for a while now and there is a newer transcoder called MCE video encoder that lets you pause, fast forward, and rewind. It is a little cumbersome to use but it beats having to wait 30 mins or more to get to the part of the video you want!
- warder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg likes those dups... http://digg.com/gaming/Play_DivX_files_through_your_Xbox_360
- depodollar, on 02/25/2008, -0/+0Xbox 360 movies can be downloaded online now. I already downloaded many movies!
Check at: http://www.great-monitor.com/reviews/xbox360.htm - Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0the goal of ms here is not to have to pay licensing fees....
- blindfaith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just posted on microsoft media center website about how to do this. Microsofts offical response to this is that , they only support windows media files. But are looking into making other formats available. -.-'
- stumpadoodle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sounds like kind of a stupid idea to me...I wouldn't want that kind of strain on my computer. Stickin with VLC...
- andrewwi19, on 10/23/2008, -1/+0http://www.360Elite4free.com/index.php?ref=5094826 go to this websote pick your prize and sign up complete an offer and you will be on your way to getting your free 360. You get the free prize because the companys that advertise which youa re doing the free trials for pay the websight when comeone buys a product then they pay you for the help in your prize.
- bmaltais, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is actually streaming in mpeg2 format (no longer WMV). To get back to the point of codec MS could allow each vendor to compile theirs for the 360 and make it available through the marketplace. This way MS has nothing to do, they just publish a codec interface for vendors to use.
The only thing MS has to do then is allow users to access network shares to open their prefered video files! EASY... but this would be too simple! - techware, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You know, Stupid me thought a console gaming device was to play GAMES.
Why in the hell would I want to watch DivX compressed crap movies on an XBOX?
And why did this make the front page? - zider, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Yeah VLC is so much better
- kevinmtu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2sweetness, now to try it to see if it works....
- kramer3d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1true dat. this aint new!
- hellalazy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0so do we need to get MSMC to get this divx player? it doesnt matter anyways my dvd player can play dvix and xvid.
- Killerah, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8umm... duh?
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1No Digg, how many times is this going to make it to the front page? I've counted 3 myself
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Where are the uber l337 haxOrz that only me to stream video to my xbox without running XPMC!!!11!1 Curse M$ and their OS versions!!!

www.compforums.org - CRASSPUNXTEXHTV, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2why the hell dose Microsoft not allow you to play any format you want. it's not like the make money every time you play a wmv or asf(which is so rarely used) I would love to have been able to play all files the my mce pc can play CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN but this is not so important to my becuse i am 12 and have a tv next to my pc and if i whant to see a video on a tv i use an s-vid cable(beucse i do not have an hdtv to use dvi with) but i feal sympathy for those who do not have a pc next to a tv
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1"The Xbox Media Center people have released a free download that lets you play DivX and Xvid on your Xbox 360."
Uhh misleading description, this is not an offical release nor has anything at all to do with Microsoft. Please report as inaccurate. - bigboludo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Nothing on the 360 will ever compare to the functionality of XBMC.
