- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -9/+228They also removed the 20GB models off the shelfs..
Geeez cmon sony. I wa about to buy one, that turns me off totally and probably get an xbox360 this weekend. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+119Sony Exec: Well, our plan is a success. The PS3 is a total failure EVERYWHERE, things are going just according to plan.
Yes Man: Actually, sir, it is selling pretty well in Canada.
Sony Exec: Damn those stinking syrup eaters! Jack up the prices on them so that they lose interest like everyone else. I will NOT have my console becoming popular against my wishes!
((Seems crazy, but Sony seems to be doing almost exactly this type of backward thinking, don't they?)) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+122Is this premium price of the PS3 really worth the opportunity to play those five or so games that won't be available on the Xbox 360? Honestly, I want to know. What's the appeal of the PS3 over the Xbox 360 at this point? Those fives games? Is that what it is? Your Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid fetishes (with one or two others) are really worth hundreds of dollars extra in hardware costs? Nothing on the Xbox 360 that is exclusive balances it out for you?
Is Gears of War not better than Resistance? Is the upcoming Splinter Cell game (it's 360 exclusive) not as good as Metal Gear Solid? Are RPGs like Mass Effect and Oblivion really so astonishingly worse than a Final Fantasy game that you can't consider them close-to equals? - Koopa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+119"You can put Linux on your console."
Don't care/can buy a cheap computer.
"There will be better games out in the future."
Same applies to other consoles, except other consoles actually have games I want now AND in the future.
"BluRay."
Don't want it.
"The list goes on."
It does? - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -10/+96they removed the 20gb model so they can have a 'who has the biggest dick' contest with Microsoft over the hdd. People want a bigger hdd from Microsoft but it's not really a selling point for 99.9% of the people who buy it.
You should buy a 360 anyway. Unless you want to spend $750 to play Resistance. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+89"You can put Linux on your console. There will be better games out in the future. BluRay. The list goes on."
99.99999% of people have no interest in putting linux on a PS3. The first gen Xbox crowd tried the "there will be games for it coming out soon, we SWEAR!!" line. Sony can't use it now because no one falls for it anymore. Blu-Ray...you mean the dying technology destined for the obscurity of BetaMax and MiniDisc? No thanks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+72$699.99 - $659.99 = $40 =/=$50
I'm glad somebody passed math class! - Kyrgizion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+75Sony Exec: "And buy more Nintendo shares dammit!"
- ohcoaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+66"no such thing as bad press" applies to celebrities, not companies.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60Ok, I'm sorry for hijacking the top post, and reposting from below, but this NEEDS stated early:
You guys, this is pretty simple:
Exchange rate was about CDN$1.11 ~= US$1.00 in May (when prices were announced at E3): US$600 = CDN$666
Exchange rate now is about CDN$1.18 ~= US1.00: US$600 = CDN$708
That's odd. That's almost exactly a $40 increase... exactly the increase Sony made. This has nothing to do with "They're selling a lot in Canada" or "They're trying to save their butts." This has to do with simple macro-econ and the value of different currencies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+54Does anyone else realize it's a $40 increase, not a $50 increase? Am I missing something?
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50It's obvious that they did this to prevent people from either importing or border hoping.
The old Canadian price point was actually quite a bit cheaper than the US price. The new Canadian price is closer to the price we pay in the states.
CAD / USD
$660 = $559
$700 = $591
Still, its puzzling; why didn't they sell it for $700 to begin with? - yidali, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Alright! 700 for Linux!!... or i could get VMWare and run multiple OS's on my computer. As far as i'm concerned the PS3 is a gaming machine, not another computer as much as sony wants me to think it is.
- SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40Well theyre losing tons of money... I guess if its actually selling well somewhere they could try to at least lose a little less. It remains to see how people react though... They might be totally put off, all of them. It'll be interesting to see how it continues to sell.
I well understand you were put off inkubux ^^ And btw, I'd highly recommend an Xbox 360. It has some really great games. The Wii's certainly a better choice than PS3 as well (got one but aint got a 360 yet). - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39Dear Digg
Go to xe.com - choose the currency converter
Input $599 US DOLLARS
Choose Canadian for the currency conversion
Notice that it comes out to $705 Canadian at an exchange rate of .84 cents to the dollar.
THIS ADJUSTMENT WAS BASED ON THE FLUCTUATION OF THE CANADIAN DOLLAR. GET A GRIP.
Edit: Well played zebov. - FieldAnonymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31".... there is no such thing as bad press..."
People keep saying that, and it's just not true. I mean, do you really want your target audience to find you repulsive? I would think that's bad press. Anyone else remember the PSP flog? People's reactions were perfect examples of bad press. - mizzack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31I'm digging your stupid ass down. Not because I'm a Wii fanboy, but rather due to the fact that you clearly didn't read the article either. Nowhere in the linked page does it cite successful sales as the reason for the price increase. The headline on digg is completely sarcastic and you might be able to realize that if you could see through your own fanboyism.
- boardo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31I just noticed this as well and had to see if anyone else saw it. Futureshop.ca has 82 units just sitting there online with a 700 dollar pricetag before sales tax, extra controller, 1-2 games... not worth it
- sampson123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31*****, people were really disappointed when the Wii was announced at $250 and I'm sure many people would complain if they upped the price.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34@drathosX3
And if you believe that, I've got this great bridge in New York I'm trying to get off my hands... - jewdiknight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31I really think that Sony being self destructive with there PS3 intentionally. I do not think that a company can truly screw up so many times with a product. I don't know why they are doing it, maybe so the stock will crash so the board members can buy it really cheap like in the Hudsucker Proxy.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I think $200 would be the right price for Wii. $250 is overpriced.
- terasurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Marketing reps should take this to heart, in the consumer's eyes $659.99 = $650, and $699.99 = $700. Interesting how that works.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I'm digging you down because either YOU:
A.) Didn't RTFA.
B.) Don't understand sarcasm.
C.) A and B - boardo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24The title of the article is sarcastic. I believe most people are aware it is not selling as well as the wii here either.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Right now I feel really sad. A little over a year ago I thought I'd get a 360 and a PS3. I love my PS2 but it's looking like I'll NEVER buy a PS3. There's no point.
If I want to play an RPG or a MGS game that will only come out on the PS3 I'd much rather save the $700 or more. It's sad because I know I'll never play a Sony game again (unless it's a PS2 game). So long Sony. We had some good times, but you just got too high maintenance. - daedalus1982, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18careful Sony will raise the price and call it a special edition walmart skin.
- Systematic1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Step 1: Release PS3 and have it sitting on shelves, then jack up the price
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit - flxstr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21Not exactly accurate. Sony themselves still sell the console for $659.99. http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1003456&navigationPath=100152n100345
***** and WorstBuy are the same store, so this is probably an independent decision by them.
Note that Sony's store had these in-stock yesterday. You'd think a new console like this would simply be out of stock! - Michalson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13No, I think Sony is being smart (a rare occurance).
At $600 USD (or $659-$699 CAD) it's way out of the price range of what most people will spend on a console (even the 360 has lost a lot of sales for going past the $299 safe zone, as the harddriveless turd edition doesn't count). Up here in Canada I've seen the PS3 both in stacks on the floor and being taken at the return desk.
At this point the only people who are going to buy the PS3 are people with lots of money (or very little sense) who are buying it purely for the name brand or because they want games Sony is advertising that won't come out till 2008 or 2009 (much like people bought the PSP for Gran Turismo). Since Sony has priced themselves out of the regular market, they might as well drain the few suckers for as many dollars as they can. - Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10To raise the price of a product is pissing off the consumers and a marketing suicide.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10They also pay much higher taxes - both on purchases and out of their paychecks.
- thisisbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Does anyone realize they are actually selling the PS3 for 700 canadian dollars which = $600 USD? and it is for the 80gig one right? isn't that actually better than the American price?
- drvelocity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is an attempt in justifying Ken Kutaragi's previous statement that the PS3 is something that you should WANT to blow a lot of cash for. It's something you should want to SAVE UP for. Apparently their market research showed that Canadians are making too much money these days, and weren't appreciating the PS3 fully, only having to hand over a paltry $659.99 Canadian dollars. At least now you'll really appreciate the PS3, right??
- petard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yeah but who wants a core?
- illectronic, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19buried as inaccurate. nowhere in the article does it say that the price increase is due to the PS3's "success". as someone said earlier, it's probably just a currency conversion issue.
- SkullWolf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's the PS3-o Geo.
- zlintux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Perhaps the USD dropped since the prices for the console were announced
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -22/+30Yarnage:
You.. do realize bush is in the whitehouse, right? - SteelFrog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11My local Future Shop had two or three sitting on the shelf last week and several returned units.

"Is Gears of War not better than Resistance? Is the upcoming Splinter Cell game (it's 360 exclusive) not as good as Metal Gear Solid? Are RPGs like Mass Effect and Oblivion really so astonishingly worse than a Final Fantasy game that you can't consider them close-to equals."
I haven't played Resistence, but I have played Gears and I honestly can't see what the big deal is about that game. Granted, I'm also the guy that doesn't see what the big deal is with Halo. I played a few levels of GoW co-op with a friend and after the first level I was already bored. Ok... so I can cut a guy in half... woooo
The main selling point of MGS (to me at least) is the story. After having played the last 4 games in the series (Portable Ops being #4) I want to know the rest of the story.
Comparing RPG's to each other is a very difficult thing to do. Comparing Final Fantasy to Oblivion is like comparing Smash Bros to Street Fighter. Yes, they are in the same genre, but they are completely different in everyway. Final Fantasy are story driven games (e.g. linear) whereas a game like Oblivion is character-progression driven. Much like with MGS, I'm here for the story more than anything. As long as I can remember I've been an FF fan and enjoyed every single game in the series to some degree (IX was meh...) so I can logically assume I will like the 13th iteration of the series along with the VS spinoff since I'm a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts and that team is making it. Mass Effect might be a fantastic game, but I don't have the history to base it on that I do with FF. As for some of the other RPGs for 360 like Blue Dragon, I've watched videos and the combat looks.... boring.
Personally, picking one console or the other simply based on price is illogical. I've been a gamer pretty much my entire life. My life revolves around video games. I'm a game programmer for a living, I read game news constantly, I go home and play video games all night. The point is, video games are a very serious topic for me, so I can't just pick up a 360 because it might have some games that "balance out" the games that I want on PS3. - lazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Uh... lol, PS3s have been here for a LONG time sitting on shelves.
If anyone knows where markville mall is, I put a walmart sticker on one of the PS3 boxes in the electronics cage several weeks ago. ITS STILL THERE. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7gaming @ 1080p assumes there are games to play.
... at least you have a machine you can look at and be proud of the tech specs. Good move! Have fun. - PleaseJustDie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7bah there's still a day left and 10 bids on that, it won't go for 250 It'll go for much more.
- iposthuman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There has been a lot of PS3 price gouging up here in toronto lately (probably just like everywhere). Best buy and Futureshop are the same company. Until i hear otherwise from SONY Canada i'm gonna assume this is a move by best buy/future shop and is more of the same gouging, or at the very least somebodies accident. Everywhere else i've looked has the normal price and there is no communication from anyone at SONY or any of the more hooked in sites that a price increase has officially occured on SONY's send.
As of now Sony Style has the price listed at 659 still:
http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/CategoryDisplays?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&categoryId=100345&navigationPath=100152 - cdneng2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@Diggtatorship
What exchange rate are you using?
Last I went to Canada, I got a measly $.85US exchange $1 CDN dollar.
Add the GST+PST as well (for non-Albertans):
$660+GST=$759CDN=$645US
$700+GST=$805CDN=$684US
Wii = $280+GST=$322CDN=$273.70US
In general, Canadians pay more for consoles then americans. - steevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6GST isn't 15% the GST is 6%, in Ontario we also have the PST which is 8% combined for 14%. The GST was recently lowered from 7%. The GST is a federal government tax while PST is an Ontario tax, the other provinces have similar taxes of differing amounts
and the current exchange rate is 1 CAD = 0.847425 USD - Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@Michalson You have sort of made part of his point for him.
They are cutting themselves off from the masses - and ruining the possibility of the ps3 being a general success. As things stand, only the more affluent , or fanatic of people will get one.
Sure it might be a success with those sorts of people, but then it might be fair to say that it will always have been. - omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Harrison88: Linux is totally useless on the PS3, unless you're a developer coding for the Cell processor... and even then, it's of very limited usefulness. The fact that the wireless doesn't work and you can't get any access to the 3D acceleration of the hardware makes it pointless to even try. Not only that, but with YDL, it runs so slowly, I can literally start the PS3, walk downstairs, and start my computer, and be surfing the interwebs by the time the PS3 shows the desktop. That's NOT a reason to spend $600 on one.
(Side Note: I bought one because it IS worth $700 to me to play Final Fantasy, Lair, Heavenly Sword, and a few other games that aren't likely to go non-exclusive anytime soon.) - h12cjb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Futureshop = $700
Sonystyle.ca = $660
Because of futureshops 110% price policy they now have to sell it to you for cheaper if you ask -
