- BitSlash, on 10/12/2007, -7/+60But they did give us an official release date- Spring 2006
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Damnit, now this is on the front page while it is entirely a false story!!!
I'm going to go into caps mode for this:
HOWARD STRINGER HAS NOT SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE PS3'S RELEASE DATE SLIPPING. THE VARIETY ARTICLE IS MAKING GUESSES LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -11/+48This is very inaccurate. Howard Stringer does not say anything at all about the PS3 being delayed. Variety says it will be delayed, but what do they know?
Again, this story is inaccurate and only based on heresay - bluehouse, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Great! This gives me more time to save up the $3.5 million I'll need to buy this thing.
- Choaderboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24"Sony CEO Howard Stringer confirms suspicions that the PlayStation 3 won't be released until the holiday season 2006"
Whilst this is more than likely true, the article says nothing of the sort.
Reported as innacurate. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Sigh....yes, there was a release "window". Adamantly repeated as SPRING 2006, even as recently as a few weeks ago we heard this.
I am a big Sony fan but you fanboys are making me sick with your blind faith and support.
Sony screwed up even mentioning a time at all. They should have just said "when it's done". - CheeseheadDave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13True, but Sega had a big headstart with the Dreamcast and we all know how that turned out...
- essdub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I'd like to see some of the age demographics for those that purchase the X360, the PS3 and the Revolution. I have a 360, but I find myself being drawn more towards the thought of a Revo rather than a PS3 purchase. Not sure why.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10is this so shocking? we haven't seen any actually model of the ps3 running. i bet this system won't be out until 2007.
- m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9While I'm not much of a xbox fan I am impressed by what it can do. I played DoA on my friends huge HD TV and it was hawt to death.
- bostongeek, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Ditto. No Quote = No Digg
- Sleek, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Good news about this is that it gives Bungie more time to work on Halo 3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The reason ps3 is being delayed is because micro$oft suckered $ony into a "coolest, fastest, most powerful" harware war, while microsoft got smart and released their system early without the needless bells and whistles. Just about every component to the ps3 is a buzz word. The Cell, bluetooth, wifi, usb, compactflash, HDtv??
sony = sega
xbox360 > (sega) ^ 2 - JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, while Spring 2006 may not be a release DATE it is a release WINDOW. They've pushed back the release WINDOW, and therefor the subsequent DATE is pushed back as well.
"They also are supposed to not have a multi date release date. Since they said they want to do away with regional encoding like they did with the PSP, this would allow for a near simultaneous release date."
This MAY be true, but you need to also consider packaging, shipping, and default settings. Japan won't get PS3's with English set as the default language just the same way that America won't get units shipped with Japanese as the default language. While this isn't as big of an issue as region encoding, it is an issue that will slow down a US launch date.
My point is this. If PS3 comes out in America before 2007, I'll eat my hat. - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I'm guessing you haven't played CoD2. Or PGR. Or Condemned. Or DOA4.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Well, I'm enjoying our Xbox 360 enough, even though I'm playing primarily Live Arcade games (Geometry Wars is the best $4 you'll ever spend). Revolution is a definite, as I am a Nintendo fanboy at heart.
PS3 will probably be a definite too, because it is the Wal-Mart of consoles. Every rapper worth his rhyme will have one, which will make it most popular for the general public. - Nesh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"PS3 will probably be a definite too, because it is the Wal-Mart of consoles. Every rapper worth his rhyme will have one ((in his car)), which will make it most popular for the general public."
Fixed :) - skooby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Where is it? Rumors has it that Bungie is displeased (as well as a friend inside Bungie) with Microsoft announcing Halo 3 when it isnt even in development."
You can bet your ass that Halo 3 was in early-development before Halo 2 was even released. The game is too much of a cash cow for Bungie (and Microsoft) to let go for too long. I also find it amazing at how many 'friends' the guys at Bungie have. They must be the 'friendliest' guys in the world... - mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And what about the "Conceptual Design" placard at CES 06?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Not quite:
Sony will roll out the PS3 by year end, in time for the holidays. If PS3 "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up," Stringer boasts.
So they did manage to get a quote of him saying how ubber it will be. - Siljmonster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9But Microsoft made one big mistake. Halo 3.
Where is it? Rumors has it that Bungie is displeased (as well as a friend inside Bungie) with Microsoft announcing Halo 3 when it isnt even in development. Don't piss off the company that makes your best games. But with sports titles and lacking first person shooters, wheres the competition? Xbox360 has interested me a bit more recently, but all the titles that have are all coming out in 07 or winter of this year. Ill hold off while they fix their problems and actually are able to create enough to keep on the shelves. But the other sad thing is that the hype effect is happening once again. Remember when PS2 wasnt on the shelves for a whole two months after release? It was because of hype, and well general shipping methods. But that was fixed in no time. I work at EB, and we still have a shortage, a whole half a year later and a handful of people still want one due to the hype effect.
Microsoft better hurry, and they better stop killing us PC gamers. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What I took away from the quote in question in the article, the Variety author was simply making an estimate based on the same information (or lack thereof) that everyone else has. It doesn't seem to me that Stringer in any way "confirmed" any type of delay at all. Not to say there isn't one, it just isn't confirmed by Sony's CEO in this particular article.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I love this. Especially since Nintendo has said anything officially about a release date, there are no pictures of anything beside the case (and controller) and we haven't seen any games. Nintendo is in a worse boat than Sony right now. I have no doubt we'll be seeing a lot of this at GDC and E3, but do you think Sony is not going to bring their guns as well? I doubt Nintendo gets out before the holiday as well (if that even).
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The PS2 wasn't the first console if its generation, the Dreamcast was. But I don't see how that makes it logical that it'd be the last of this generation. If anything, Microsoft launched about a year early. The console cycle had sort of settled into a five year cycle. MS released after four. Sony and Nintendo have stuck to the five year cycle.
- JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry, forgot us Americans aren't the only ones on the internet. The PS3 was supposed to come out this Spring in Japan. The problem with the interview is it didn't say where it was coming out this holiday season.
- wolrah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I decided at about 8 PM on a Monday night that I wanted a 360. By noon the next day, I had one, purchased from a Best Buy, no bundles, no overpricing, no nothing. This was about 2 weeks ago, and yes I got the premium model, not the gimped core.
- Siljmonster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Japan First, America second, Europe Last. Thats the way it works people.
No digg for lack of proof of any "release date/push back". This is just about Stringers horrible business edicuite.
BIG NOTE: It is not officially spring, and just because it says release date of spring, that doesnt mean EARLY spring. But I bet a LATE spring launch in JAPAN only. Then on to the rest of the world, where they lose money a little money in shipping and total costs, but still win the war effort. (Same applies to Nintendo) - RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why indeed.
A 2 or 3 hundred dollar console is far more of a waste than a $1000 PC. - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5one thing that will confirm or deny the story is whether there will be a playable game at E3 this year.
- Weenis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10So it won't come out until the holiday season, but what is the stock going to be like? Could it be even less available than Xbox 360 was at it's launch?
They are giving XBox 360 over a year headstart and when the time comes to release it, stores will be full of Xbox 360s and likely sparingly stocked PS3s. PLus with the possibility of Halo 3 being released by Xmas... this could be bad news for Sony, no matter how good of a console they put out. - Raldikuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Why exactly would a delay create anymore games? Sure there may have been more launch titles, but any games that are going to be made will be made. Launching it later doesn't create more games to have. If anything an earlier launch allows skeptical game developers to realise if the console will be popular enough to warrant their time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9http://playstation.com/products.html
Official Date?? - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Apparently Sony did.
I guess they've finally worked past their denial. :-p - matthewecornish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm waiting for the PS3 to be released to bring down the price of the Xbox360 :) And to give me a chance to compare the two in the flesh... how folks are coming to such solid conclusions based on a product they've not touched is beyond me.
- ImmortalSoldier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Boy Sony did shoot themselves in the foot, they are screwed if the Revolution comes before it. Ever since the rootkit incident they have lost tons of potential consumers and everyone that has been waiting patiently holding out on the 360 is gonna be very dissapointed. Too bad for sony, they screwed up on the rootkit, they havent delivered in the psp and now they are giving the 360 even more time to dig their way into more homes.
- jupo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft must be drooling over the current state of the PS3 and the opportunity it provides them to tighten their grip on the console market. Will they dominate in this arena as they have with the desktop? Only time will tell.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks, had no idea when Thanksgiving was either but I've just done a search and it's in November so I assume we're looking at Xmas time then, which is when I thought the PS3 was expected anyway
- Big_E103, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4SONY SUCKS when are you ppl gonna figure that out!
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -12/+15Yeah I do believe we had a "launch window" of Spring 2006, but I don't think anybody was really expecting it by then. A few more months is going to suck for the inpatient, but all in all is probably for the best. I have an Xbox 360 and I love it, but it definately could of benefited from a delay so we could of gotten a few more (higher quality) games.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@impstek
I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a delay from the "Spring" (which everyone seems to forget is three months - not "March") release, but no delay was confirmed in this Variety article. - vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well okay; I guess we'll have to wait and see.. personally I'm happy with my 360 and anyone that gets a system should be happy with what they got since they choose it; no one should be flamed because they choose a certain system which brings me to why fanboyism is really pointless.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5And a little extra fuel to the fire
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/06/variety-com-ps3-report-confirms-absolutely-nothing/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7No matter how good the PS3 will be, this will still hurt sony. Xbox 360 will be $50-100 cheaper, and the revolution will already be fairly cheap. If the rumoured price tag of the PS3 is true, this will really hurt sony.
- isajeep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's not like this surprised anyone. I just wish they would've admitted to it before.
- bigboy101011, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10something tells me that the PS3 won't come out untill after Halo.... the movie that is.
- SUPERTOY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since I already have, and enjoy my 360. There wouldnt really be any reason for me to buy a PS3, because #1: I wont have an extra $500+ dollers to spend, and #2: Every game for the PS3 except for Metal Gear, God of War, Gran Turismo, and Killzone(which I could couldnt less about) is going to be on the 360. The Revolution however will provide an entirely different gaming experience from either console and will have exclusive first-party games you wont find anywhere else. I'm also liking the estimated price tag($250 I think).
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spring starts a day before GDC, and ends June 20th.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony made the Game Gear? I thought that was Sega.
- SucKerS4Me, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony isn't worried about releasing the PS3 late cause they know all you blind idiots are going to cream your pants and run out to buy one no matter how many times Sony bends you over. The only thing PlayStation has going for them is all you bandwagon, blind faith, fan boys that would rather suck Sony's big floppy than open your eyes and make your own decisions. and because of your ignorance, game developers would rather make games for Sony to snag all you mindless PS gamers.
- count_z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If Microsoft manages to move to a .65 nm process then it will be $50-100 cheaper for Microsoft to produce the console (so they'll lose less money on the hardware), but it's unlikely that they'll pass any of that onto the consumer (particularly if the PS3 weighs-in at 400+ dollars).
If Sony put the PS3 at the same price point as the Xbox 360 (which, if you believe the Merryl-Lynch report, means that Sony will be eating a $400-500 loss on the hardware per console... which is insane) then microsoft would lower the price of the Xbox 360 to make it look more attractive... but I really, really, really doubt that is going to happen. -
