- kkaabboomm, on 10/11/2007, -9/+92with all these firmware updates from microsoft and sony, i wonder why nintendo is dropping the ball - yes there are very small incremental upgrades, but they dont publish what they are upgrading. the one i can definitely say was updated was region, from country to state for the everybody votes channel. why no SD card channels? why no media channel?
mad props to sony for the continued development of their ps3 firmware, 2.0 sounds like it will continue the addition of features/etc- gamergrim, on 10/11/2007, -9/+72Yea, where are the updates Nintendo...oh well. This is a huge update for the PS3.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -13/+56This looks awesome, XMB access during games is absolutely the most important thing they left off when PS3 shipped. I wonder if it means we'll be able to play music during a game too, or if it's limited XMB access... at least we'll be able to get to and send messeges though.
Anyone else notice that the 360 interface is REALLY slow in game. I'll see someone sign online, press the X, wait a few seconds, scroll down to "friends," click, wait a few more seconds, scroll down to a friend I want to talk to, click, wait a few seconds and then I can invite him or send him a message. I hope Sony makes the XMB fast in game, it's really annoying when you're in the middle of a round just hoping not to die because it takes a year to do anything in the 360 interface. (that said, at this point, the 360 interface is still way nicer than the PS3's) - nousemerk, on 10/11/2007, -10/+35Wow...with this great update it is really helping me feel like Sony is going the right direction with PSN.
Just think what Sony will add by Firmware Update 3.00? :) - SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -6/+41In-game music and RSS channel is very sexy.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -27/+116YAY!!!!!!
Perhaps I wont get dugg down for saying how much I love my Ps3 now?
Yeah, probably will. - AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -12/+51When is Sony releasing it?
I love mine too Admiral....Digg for you. - InfiniteNothing, on 10/11/2007, -45/+8There are lots of wii updates. Didn't it just get an internet browser? I wouldn't assume fewer updates meant dropping the ball. It could mean they didn't drop the ball to begin with.
- gxcdesign, on 10/11/2007, -18/+43I think the tides are turning for Sony. I know most at first hated the PS3 and found nothing but anti-sony stories to post on digg, but with all the latest firmware updates this console is becoming something more.
The Wii still doesn't have a killer app, not saying the PS3 does, but honestly the Wii's games for the most part have a short term ableit entertaining effect on them.
Every time I look over the PS3 aisle I see more and more people looking at them, and usually holding a couple Blu-Ray movies in their hands.
We'll just have to see I guess, but Sony isn't just a company anyone can ignore - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -12/+57Oh yeah, a web-browser. Awesome! Oh what's that? You have to pay for it eventually?
Makes the free web-browser on the ps3 seem much nicer eh?
If we want to consider adding an item for sale on the console as "an update" then perhaps the wii is almost close to catching up but... the ps3 will be taking that away soon with the addition of 25 ps1 games to the library (average cost so far is 5.99, compared to the wii's $10 n64 games), along with original games (where's the wii's original downloadable games?). And of course the ps3 system does not require buying of "points" where you always end up buying more than you need. You can just buy what you want, with real money,
Oh and before going on about how you can play all those "classic" games on the Wii... Installing linux on the ps3 is extremely simple. It took me all of 2 hours to download FC6-ppc and get it installed and my favorite emulators going. (with roms of games i own, of course.)
Doesn't mean the wii isn't a good system, it is.. (but it's not for me). You do eventually get what you pay for though. - Alphabet, on 10/11/2007, -38/+7meh, all the updates here are useless. Everything being "updated" here can be done better with my pc. I don't care about the ability to play music or watch videos.
- BHRecon, on 10/11/2007, -19/+23@Admirabumblebee
Actually .. its free to d/l for a few months, after that they will want payment.. but the one u have d/led (if u d/led it in the free period) continues to work.. theres no "pay for it eventually" for anyone who already got it. So go get it now while its free and don't worry about it. - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -15/+11@BHRecon
I thought the latest opera for Wii would expire and revert to cost?
The ps3's browser render's well, supports flash well, good window handling (no tabs), simultaneous downloads (can save pictures, music and movies to the HDD for later play), different display modes and it can use up to 1080 resolutions.
So the "fair" comparison is Ps3 std browser to the latest opera for Wii. If I want to browse the web on my TV, I'd use the wii one (but why when i have my mbp right there?)... but really the only time I open it up is to get some new music on my PS3. - BHRecon, on 10/11/2007, -16/+24for those of u who dont have a wii and are digging me down.. u should read the official press release from April 12th
http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2007/04/12/
*This version of the browser remains a free download until June 30, 2007, and once downloaded is free for the lifetime of the system.*
I don't think it gets any clearer than that :) - CraigCarlyle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+61Users

- NeoTechni, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14As much as I love my PS3, XBMC still beats it due to SAMBA+UPnP support, and more codecs.
- elementalsin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I have to say, as an original doubter of PS3 and it's online services, they continue to impress me with their constant stream of updates. If it continues like this, Live could very well have an extremely competitive race coming to them after all. Now... if they could only hold on to some of those exclusive titles........
- Stonedonkey, on 10/11/2007, -13/+11"Oh yeah, a web-browser. Awesome! Oh what's that? You have to pay for it eventually? Makes the free web-browser on the ps3 seem much nicer eh?"
Yeah... the Wii costs $250, chief. And if you purchase a Wii by June 30, 2007, the browser is permanently free. This has been the case since the system launched. One may also point out that the PS3 costs about twice as much. Its browser isn't exactly "free" -- it merely avoids being itemized.
You're probably better off talking about how the PS3 browser allows you to surf at 1080p, while the Wii version maxes out at 720x480. Personally, I don't see much value in surfing the Web at Wii resolutions, let alone on an SDTV. Neither do I see much value in buying a PS3 for such a purpose, since you can have only a small handful of active windows open at a time, and the input device leaves something to be desired. So HD is a relatively pointless advantage when it comes to using the Internet on a console. - NotZero, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/04/12
- Nocturnalis, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4@kkaabboomm
Updates are a selling point for Sony and MS. Nintendo doesn't need to resort to telling everyone every time they wipe their asses.....yet. As soon as a Wii is on the self it's gone. People are buying them regardless. Sony and MS are playing tit for tat with each other trying to saw the consumer to their product with every piece of new information. Not a bad thing at all but Nintendo doesn't need to do this right now. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I'm sure I'll get dugg down for saying something other than "the Wii is perfect and is a blast to play." But I have been extremely disappointed by the Wii. I don't find it fun, Nintendo is making the SAME mistakes they did with the gamecube, and they don't seem to care..
- m4szyman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"- [PS / PS2 Settings] has been added as an option."
...
"- Playability status with the PS3™ system has changed for some PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format titles."
Does any of this mean we can use the guitar hero controller (or other non-ps3 controllers) on ps3 yet? The fact that I cant play guitar hero 1&2, time crisis 2&3 or use any of my arcade sticks on the ps3 is one reason I havent switched over from ps2 to ps3 yet.
Also, can anyone tell me whats going on with the backwards compatibility on ps3's? Is it just the Euro ones that emulate through software or have they phased that into production of North American units as well? Is the list of compatible games through emulation being addressed in 2.00? - JohnyD, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3@ nocturnalis
You're 100% right. Regardless of how much you hump Sony or MS the big N is kicking everyones butts in sales. I myself am in absolute love with my Wii. When I have company over it's 'the' entertainment device. Regardless if it's an adult, child, or game enthusiast... all can and do benefit from the Wii. It's also a great console for couples. My gf and I play many games including Wii Sports, Wario Ware, Super Monkey Ball, and Wii Play. When she leaves I play Excite Truck for hours on end (which I must say... is the greatest racing game of all time). My 360 still gets lots of use. I'm especially looking forward to the Crackdown DLC... which I will gladly pickup when I get home.
As for the update from Sony... I find it funny to hear people freaking out about how great they are. To me they seem like minimalist features. My reaction (I believe) would be more like, "Oh, that's cool." as opposed to, "OMFJC! Way to go SOOOONY!". This round of updates has not raised any kind of 'ball'... it's just small things that they couldn't get done before launch. In fact... the update looks somewhat lacking... in a similar way that the PSP updates were lacking. Sony will undoubtedly spread their update features (being the ones that actually matter.... more codec support, cool thing 1, cool thing 2, etc..) across many years... so that they can jam in as many security updates as possible... forcing users to update. Anyhow... I'm trying to compile our new sales system here at work so my mind is wandering and I'll finish this post off now. In case you were wondering I do not own a PS3 as there is no reason since MS seems to be getting all their exclusives. I will most likely pick one up in the future... the future being a minimum of 1 year... a maximum of 3. =D - KMartSheriff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Damnit I want one. Now all I need is $599 :(
I heart you PS3 but you cost so much...lousy car payments... - hamstereater, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2great, now how about actually getting some games
- drfloyd5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nintendo Dropping the Ball? You are joking.
Since I got the Wii back in Christmas. I got "for free" a nice photo viewer that I use quite a bit with the wife; a news feed reader; a weather / forcast channel; a kinda of neat "everybody votes channel"; and , oh yeah, a competent web browser.
These are not direct firmware upgrades. But they have been added to the system since it's release.
Frankly, if they are upgrading the firmware so often, I would be worried about their development pratices. You don't go around upgrading my BIOS all the damn time.
- HOTM, on 10/11/2007, -5/+44My Favorite: RSS Channel is now added
If its anything like the PSP one, you can now put something like Diggnation's feed into it, and when a new episode comes out, stream it!- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -19/+3I kinda like the "Dynamic Normalizer"... which is *****-speak for a Limiter with make-up gain.
But hey, I guess Dynamic Normalizer sounds way cooler. - JudgeMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3yea **** all the other features. I'm sure they are nice, but when I saw rss my eyes jumped right to that and stopped. It was logical, inevitable, and curiously missing.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -19/+3I kinda like the "Dynamic Normalizer"... which is *****-speak for a Limiter with make-up gain.
- diggthiscrap, on 10/11/2007, -6/+27I don't own a PS3 yet, but can anyone tell me if you can download in the background?
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -5/+39yes you can. They added that in Update 1.6 or 1.7, I can't remember. But it works just fine, you don't have to worry about anything once you click "Perform in Background"
- diggthiscrap, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18@ nreynolds
Thank you for the reply. - admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17And depending on the app you can download multiple things at once in the background (such as the webbrowser).
I download music online all the time to my ps3. It is quite nice. - diggthiscrap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@ Admirabumblebee
Thanks for the update! - halfway, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1How do you get music online to your ps3? I didnt think I could download stuff off websites onto the system
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3
Also, you can queue up MORE than 6 downloads. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3>How do you get music online to your ps3? I didnt think I could download stuff off websites onto the system
That would sort of defeat the purpose of downloading from the Internet wouldn't it? It works the same way as it does on your PC. Click on the MP3 or AAC file and select the download location.
- stephancelmare, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16This is good news :) Thanks for sharing.
- HOTM, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34One of these companies need to just come out already and support DivX and XviD! Whatever, I don't care about this "Its the piracy format" *****. Sony or Microsoft, if one of you do it, I, and many others, will purchase your console just for that feature!
I think I just used about 10 commas too many. But whatever.- SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Tricky part is perhaps getting a license?
- fantasticFlan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8Shouldn't have a problem with the XviD license.
- tapo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Actually, you will have a huge problem with getting an XviD license, as it's covered under numerous software patents that are not owned by the XviD project.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvid#Legal_issues - kidd3ckz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8You need more apostrophes (super commas).
-----------------------------------------------------------------^ - drakino, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20What's wrong with just using standard MPEG 4 formatting for your videos? Never understood everyones amazement with Divx and Xvid. It's just bastardized MPEG 4 that makes it less compatible with devices outside peoples PCs.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Based on a certain experience that recently came available, I can be pretty confident in saying that DivX support will be coming to the PS3 by, say, at the latest, around October-ish... NDA would prevent me from expanding any further.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3>One of these companies need to just come out already and support DivX and XviD
True, but at least you have the option of booting into Linux and going crazy with as many codecs as you want.
- JasonCox, on 10/11/2007, -106/+13Microsoft releases an update:
Waaaahhhhh! My console still works but I'm gonna complain about it bricking anyway!
Sony releases an update:
OMG! Its teh update for teh PS3!
Seriously.- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -7/+42seriously what?
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+61From the cool guy with the Windows avatar! Go you!
- Yonson, on 10/11/2007, -7/+46Yeah, what are those disgruntled Xbox 360 owners thinking complaining about their consoles dropping like flies? I mean, come on guys, suck it up, it was only $400.
- tapo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30Listen, people will start to complain when people see their PS3s getting bricked. But there haven't been any major problems with the PS3 hardware or software wise. Meanwhile, I know two friends with Xbox 360s and both had their systems die. One redringed, one was bricked during the November dashboard update. I'm seriously considering purchasing an extended warranty before my launch 360 kicks the bucket.
Secondly, if you want people to take you seriously, don't have the Windows logo as your digg user icon. - gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2You are correct Jasoncox, It sucks being a red headed step child, no matter what you do right you're always in the wrong.
- knodi, on 10/11/2007, -39/+14Its ok nothing big. I just hope then can put a good game or two any time soon.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28I don't know about you but Ninja Gaiden and Lair this summer = happy good times.
- chocobomog, on 10/11/2007, -8/+41When are you going to learn to say something else? Every time there is a PS3 article you post the same comment: "Where are the games?". And then on articles that concern good PS3 games you say "I hope this comes out for the 360 because I won't buy a PS3". We've listed the many fun games for the PS3 for you numerous times but you seem stuck in your opinion.
Either grow up, shut up, or read only the 360 articles. - knodi, on 10/11/2007, -24/+10The problem with Ninja Gaiden Sigma is that is the same game I play 2 years back (and I still have it for the Xbox). I like throwing away money as much as the next guy but I'm not going to buy a for little better graphics and a new 2 new weapons.
Lair is set for July, I hope. - Yonson, on 10/11/2007, -10/+21Yeah, 2 new weapons, a missions mode, a harder difficulty...
And GLORIOUS ***** high definition.
I don't know about you but I'm going to be first in line to buy Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Lair looks awesome too. And then of course there's MGS4. Keep dreaming that it's coming to X360 fanboys... keep dreaming.
- Bossman1086, on 10/11/2007, -35/+13Is it just me, or are most of these features things that should have been included since the launch? I mean, better late than never, but still...
- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Why?
If they did, people would just be bitching that they copied XBL. The ps3 already had plenty of "OMG TEH COPIEZ DEM!!!".
At least they're coming out with updates frequently, and with useful features that customers want. - Bossman1086, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14The only people that would bitch like that are fanboys. Competition is good. It makes the market better. I agree that it's nice they're at least releasing regular updates, though.
- rcomegys, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20I really hate it when people are so quick to say "They copied [insert innovative company name here]"
It's called progress, for the love of God. Yes, Apple was first to do a lot of really neat things with computers, and soonafter Microsoft adapts them into their OS, but that's because Apple created something useful. When the first TV came out with IR remote controls, and every other TV company started making them, was there an uproar about "OMGWTF THEY'RE JUST COPYING THAT'S LAME." No, because it's dead useful, and we all want that feature. Playing music while loading a game or while in game... that's a feature I love about my 360, and I've been wanting on my PS3. They're not copying, they're adapting.
So relax, friends. It's all good. - samdu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6And background downloading "should" have been included in both the 360 and the PS3 at the launch of each system. What's your point? Neither company had a feature complete interface at launch. It's really hard to complain that both companies are continuously updating their respective systems.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Why?
- thekms, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Can't wait! Lots of nice little improvements in this one (sadly, I didn't see DVD upscaling on the list...)
Still, its the little things... - gaqua, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26Still no fixes for those of us with 1080i TVs. It's ridiculous that the Xbox 360 and my ***** $75 DVD player can upsample a 480p or 720p signal to 1080i, but my $600 PS3 thinks that since my TV doesn't support 720p that I must be forced to play Motocross in 480p.
Other stuff looks good, but seriously, how hard is that to fix?- rebrad, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13For $+2K Sony will fix it for you. Of course that doesn't include the cost of the cables.
- iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5How do you have a TV that does 480p and 1080i and not 720p?
Mine has up to 1080i, I have my PS3 outputting 720p though because it just looks better with component cables. - thekms, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10@iroy: "How do you have a TV that does 480p and 1080i and not 720p?"
If I remember correctly, some older televisions didn't support the standard in favor of 1080i or something like that.I can't quite remember the details of it, but I'm pretty sure it was something along those lines... - hanexar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I got a 1080i and my PS3 support 720p over HDMI cable.
- BHRecon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7hey mine supports 720p but the ps3's bluray won't down convert to that resolution.. it hops all the way past to 480.. good thing i only bought it for games.
- bryants, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Eventually this will be fixed, though not sure if the current games will ever be able to play like you want them. The PS3 does have a hardware scalar just no developer yet has access to it, they just recently allowed access to part of the scalar so eventually you'll see it shape up.
- krasht, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I had issues with the HDMI to my widescreen projector. It would only go 480p. Then I got a component cable for the PS3 and it get's the 1080i/720p the projector supports with no dramas.
- PremiumBitter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I agree 100%, this is by far my NUMBER ONE concern. I have two HDTVs, both support 1080i, but do not support 720p AT ALL. This forces me to play 720p games in 480p which is incredibly lame. These games don't even look drastically better than Xbox games when played at this resolution.
- samdu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It's not very clear, but this item:
- The method of selecting an output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
May address the 720p/1080i issues. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1>For $+2K Sony will fix it for you. Of course that doesn't include the cost of the cables.
Has Microsoft started bundling towels with each 360 yet? - ddobson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The 1080i issue still isn't fixed?
I think I'm finally sold on the XBox 360 for now, then. My Wii is in the shop this week and I'm tempted to buy something new to play in the living room for a while, but after it comes back I'll want to move the HD system into the home theatre where my vintage 2000 Sony 61" CRT set doesn't handle 720p, it's 480i/480p/1080i-only.
- JasonMD, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Don't got a PS3 yet but that list made my head spin. Still no 1080i fix! I got old school big screen HDTV with no 720 so that sucks.
Let's hope they fix it when they lower the price. - Rapu, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13http://www.duggmirror.com
- DietMountainDew, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Down now, DuggMirror got it.
- olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12
- Support for PlayStation 3 format software titles has been expanded.
- XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is now accessible during gameplay.
I'm not sure I understand the first one...
But XMB yesssssss!!- cliffyboro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Probably means newer games may need different things (like the psp with new modules etc.) that are not present in lower firmwares.
- mr_bako2, on 10/11/2007, -13/+5kindof like the bs the ps3 owners had to put up with from people like you for thep ast year, and now that the ps3/sony are getting better, hurts, doesnt it?
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4When they say "Xcross media bar accessible during gameplay" does that mean ""Xcross media bar accessible during gameplay when it is supported by the game"?
There is much concern in the developer world (if you read http://www.innerbits.com/ for instance) that Sony is requireing big-time overhead for their non-game software (the OS level stuff (player communications, 'in-game-commerce' etc)
Im curious how the XMB is handled by the Game Developer and the OS. - Kxpuc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8@olddirtycr
it means there are more PS2/PS1 games playable on the PS3 via software fix - topherdan1, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3New firmware. Same price. Still can't afford this thing.
- mr_bako2, on 10/11/2007, -10/+20lol this makes me feel really good, as i was one of the people defending the ps3 from the start, i knew they would shape things up, now they just need to get things moving in the game department a bit more, which is a guarentee they will.
- Dohko_Xar, on 10/11/2007, -7/+12It's true its been doing better, but lets not forget that developers find it kinda hard to develop for PS3 (at least to juice it out).
- mr_bako2, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10right, that is true, but development will get easier and more powerful, but i suppose that can be said for all 3 consoles.

Im not entirely sure I catch why Doa4's multiplayer is superior to Vf5's "no multiplayer". Doa4's MP is absolutely horrible. Riddled with lag, glitches and consistantly lame combos. I rather play alone than play doa4 online. There is also tekken as well..
Rainbow six comes out on ps3 this month iirc, along with GRAWII coming as well.
Of course, the ps3 can play nearly every ps1 and ps2 title available, with VERY few exceptions. That's quite a library for you to dismiss as "not fun". You can also install linux and run your favorite emulators if you wish to bounce back to your schooldays.
As for smash bros, imo that's worth $300 (wii + game) right there. So not even worth mentioning. - LaSepultura, on 10/11/2007, -22/+6Although if you want to talk upcoming games.....

Unreal 2007 - PS3 and 360
Quake Wars - PS3 and 360
Age of Conan - PS3 and 360
Hellgate - 360 (Rumor)

- vhold, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5It is interesting that the 360 so far does virtually everything better except for the quasi-PC capabilities like web browsing/RSS/email that both the PS3 and Wii are slowly getting better at. Microsoft is probably having a conflict of interest issue with the Windows platform. Nintendo, by being the purest of the 3 companies, may be the most flexible, but if the past is any indication, they'll blow their opportunities by creating a bunch of great hardware integration possibilities, but not follow through with decent software.

- PikachuMan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7>"It would be nice if my ps3 could output blu-ray movies in 720p instead of downscaling to 480p"
Just the the 1080i mode. There's no such thing as the "720p only" HDTV (every HDTV made supports 1080i, and I guarantee yours does as well),. Unless you do something silly like manually deselecting 1080i as an available resolution, you should never ever be downscaling to 480p.
Though, this part of the changelog seems interesting:
- The method of selecting an output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
Hopefully, these changes might make the process more straightforward. The system now detects all the available resolutions, and then the PS3 will pick the highest supported one (in the order 1080p->1080i->720p->480p->480i). This works nicely, unless the user does something silly like deselecting an available resolution (don't do that!).
The problem, however, is that you can't change the order at which resolutions are selected (i.e., you can't select 720p as being preferred over 1080i). So, you end up having 720p native displays showing 1080i, resulting in some issues of scaling (most notably, the text in the XMB becomes much smaller, making webpages and such a bit of a pain). The new firmware hopefully rectified this problem. - butters69, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@pikachuman
well then there must be something wrong with my tv, because when i try to use 1080i on my gv42l vizio i get these weird horizontal lines in the screen every once in a while and the tv makes static noises, even in the ps3 dashboard, maybe its my hdmi cord, but there arent any problems when i run it at 720p.
all im saying is that it would be nice if the PS3 outputed blu-ray movies in my tv's natvie resoltion of 720p, i dont have to worry about this with my 360 and hd-dvd drive. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The problem is your TV brand. Next time, shop somewhere besides Sam's Club.

- MisterFlaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Um. The hardware to the PS3 lies behind the hypervisor.
The firmware before this one gave us access to it.

- conkers209, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Cool!!! New update, now people has a reason to turn on their PS3s. I find it funny how Sony is SO pro DRM that they make it easy for people to put videos on the PSP, take it to a friends house, load the movie on their PS3 from the PSP, then disconnect the PSP and the PS3 is able to play that video with no problem. Wow Sony, next time you want to protect your content, why not take your heads out of your asses Sony. Where are my updates for the Wii Nintendo?
- TDR25, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Even at $600, the PS3 is starting to look attractive. I'm still undecided on rather to buy one or not, but Sony seems to be at least trying to learn from mistakes. M$ what's your excuse?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Quite a long list of impressive features, but one in partifular caught my eye:
"- Support for PlayStation 3 format software titles has been expanded."
What on earth does that mean? I mean, its not like there were some PS3 games that did not work in a PS3 right? So what on earth does support expanded possibly mean?- krasht, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I'm assuming added functionality for future/current games (like a graphics card driver update on a PC). OR, maybe not.
- PikachuMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They are referring to the fact that future games may require the updated firmware. It's the same system used on the PSP, where you must install past a certain version in order to play the newer games. So, for example, the game "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories" will only run on firmware 2.8 or later. The just released MGS:Portable Ops requires firmware 3.40 or later. In that regard, the newer firmware "expands support for software titles", though it's an odd way of saying it.
I'm guessing this is done so the developers can have access to new features or technical changes made by later firmware. Though, more likely, It's probably an anti-piracy measure.
