- badwithcomputer, on 03/05/2009, -1/+141this is cool, but it's no replacement for real pinball. there's something beautifully zen about controlling a ball as it rockets around the playing field going up and down ramps and triggering all kinds of bells and whistles. with the right amount of mountain dew and mozzarella, it almost feels like you're using your mind to control it.
the best machine ever built by man is 'simpsons pinball party' btw. - einrobstein, on 03/04/2009, -15/+139It seems like a real pinball table would be cheaper.
- einrobstein, on 03/05/2009, -7/+90You can also use a pinball machine to rape Jodie Foster.
- StaplesGuy, on 03/05/2009, -0/+75It beats the HD fireplace that my mom has playing every time I go home...
- MScrip, on 03/05/2009, -1/+74Except you can load in multiple tables.
Which is cheaper.. one pinball simulator with 13 pinball machines in it.... or 13 pinball machines? - ripple123, on 03/05/2009, -0/+70i bet you know where to get really great pot
- LiquidIse, on 03/05/2009, -0/+55Throw this into a pinball machine style case, put some accelerometers for tilt sensing, and this is one hot setup.
- Wrathernaut, on 03/05/2009, -0/+47Apparently, you haven't priced a modern pinball table.
For The Twilight Zone Pinball, a fully restored machine is $9k. (Lesser machines still run over $5k).
A 60" Pioneer Kuro HDTV is under $4k, and you can build a PC to run the emulator for under a grand, easily. - Bviper, on 03/05/2009, -1/+42Wow, that looks like a real pinball machine, Vista task bar and all!
- shaselton, on 03/05/2009, -0/+35Such a crappy video recording on something that was pretty cool.
- noots, on 03/04/2009, -2/+35except you can flip that baby back around and watch tv on it. As opposed to a large redundant sloping table that is good for pretty much nothing (other than pinball.)
- buddamus, on 03/05/2009, -3/+36When you tilt it blue screens
- kastlip88, on 03/05/2009, -2/+31Now imagine playing this with 3D GLASSES!!!!
- welshie, on 03/05/2009, -0/+28Is it a plasma screen? If so, it'll probably be kicking out as much heat as a fireplace too.
- swicken, on 03/05/2009, -3/+30It would LOOK THE SAME!!!!
- Meekrab, on 03/05/2009, -1/+27Load times look like a bitch.
- BTallack, on 03/04/2009, -2/+28I don't think the Pinball Wizard could play on this table. There'd be no feel to it at all.
- MrYellow, on 03/05/2009, -0/+25Real pinball machines are quite expensive and have to be hand built. There are only one or two places that still make pinball machines and only in small quantities. LCDs are already much cheaper to produce.
- and303, on 03/05/2009, -1/+24If all pinball machines are 1 jotsum, and all jotsums are 13 blerpeems, and if one person can play 2 blerpeems at once, then how many people can play pinball?
- MHarrison, on 03/05/2009, -3/+25Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the silver ball - robbiedo, on 03/05/2009, -0/+19The death of the Pinball Machine is rather a shame. They really are an art form. However, they are expensive to build, and expensive to maintain. Still, I miss them. Indiana Jones is probably my all time favorite.
Nostalgia is a weird thing, but coming of age in the 1980's was a pretty special experience. Arcades were just a wonderful way to spend a date, hang out with friends, and encompassing sensual experience like nothing else before and since. Pinball machines reached there pinnacle while the video game exploded into a mutating frenzy.
Was there another decade where there was such a cultural sea change? - C0ntraRadical, on 03/05/2009, -1/+19Wow, I always wanted a pinball table with load times.
- ms2guy, on 03/04/2009, -5/+23This is pinball for wizards! There has to be a twist.
- tuxthepenguin, on 03/04/2009, -1/+19Awesome concept!
- Xcrion, on 03/05/2009, -0/+17PRESS START!!!
(and play longer than 5 sec.!) - robbiedo, on 03/05/2009, -0/+15@krackle: Missing the point, body english was a large part of playing pinball.
- SpinningHead, on 03/05/2009, -0/+15Luckily, it asks if you have administrative privileges before allowing you to tilt.
- vtbarrera, on 03/05/2009, -1/+16I felt kind of weird posting this. I love the pinball machines from the arcades, but the thought moving towards a future where pinball is just a simulation that doesn't even feature a real pinball makes me a sad panda. :(
- ObtuseGoose, on 03/05/2009, -0/+144 minute video showing 10 seconds of game play. Nice. What was the point of that?
- ripple123, on 03/05/2009, -0/+14theres these things, called tripods, that you can put cameras on, so we dont have to wade through shakycam crap like this, for the fraction of actual gameplay. ffs.
- CaptOblivious, on 03/05/2009, -1/+15Stern (in the Chicago area) is the only company still making new pinball machines.
All the rest are gone or doing other things now.
Williams & Bally merged and are apparently only making gambling machines (slots, poker & the like).
I don't know what happened to Gottlieb.
It's a sad state of affairs.
All that said, I want one of these! Giving it a decent feel would be my first (very do-able) project. - Dazzaz, on 03/05/2009, -0/+14Hiya Guys,
I am one of the admins of the site that this video originated at. HyperSpin-fe.com HyperSpin is an arcade frontend/game launcher for MAME or emulation cabinets. HyperPin, which the video is showcasing, is a new frontend that is being developed for people with dual screen digital pinball setups.
This video is actually a proof of concept video that is focused on the frontend that is being developed which is why there is very little gameplay in the video as others have stated. The screens are in a temporary position currently while the development of the frontend is being tested. The designer is currently building a fullsize pinball cabinet that will house these screens inside. He is also not the first or the last to do so. There is a whole community that is dedicated to digital pinball machines. The forums at hyperspin-fe.com, the forums at FuturePinball.com, and of course BYOAC.
More information on both HyperPin and HyperSpin can be found at www.hyperspin-fe.com. - CrimsonBlur, on 03/05/2009, -0/+13At first I thought this was worthless... but then I actually just looked up prices of pinball machines and a new one is almost $5000.
You can get a decent 47" or 50" 1080p display for about half that, add in the software price and I'm sure it would still be much lower than this setup.
It still can't beat a real pinball machine, but there are things you can do on a video pinball machine that would be impossible or cost-prohibitive on a real one. - canada42, on 03/05/2009, -3/+16That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball ! - benologist, on 03/05/2009, -2/+15And you can't use an HDTV for that?
- 2Bnor2B, on 03/05/2009, -0/+12I would be too inclined to rest a beer on top of it while playing.
- Jeremyz0r, on 03/05/2009, -6/+17This is retarded,
Please end this meme. - ba5e, on 03/05/2009, -0/+11What a GREAT POST!!!!
- sportz103, on 03/05/2009, -1/+11Dugg for subtle Seinfeld reference.
- inactive, on 03/05/2009, -1/+11No it can't. There's a distinct mechanical elegance of pinball machines that no simulator will ever be able to emulate. All the mechanical gizmos, lights, bumpers, and paddles can't ever be replicated satisfyingly on a LCD screen.
- UbIwerks, on 03/05/2009, -5/+14From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all! - LowROI, on 03/05/2009, -3/+12He plays by sense of smell. No way he could smell this!
- TheDavidCarney, on 03/05/2009, -0/+9But can it run Space Cadet Pinball?
- swicken, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8You missed it up there ^^^^^^^^^^
- xombi242, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8It's nice, yet to play it would just feel wrong.
- meed, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8Great proof of concept, next step is to build a cabinet for the thing, I would suggest using bullet proof glass to cover the screen so that people can put their beverages and to protect it from the effects of alcohol in humans.
- meyerj88, on 03/05/2009, -0/+8True, but I don't think you'd want to tilt a plasma like the guy does in the video. I think they need to remain upright. At least my Panasonic does.
- GrooTheWanderer, on 03/05/2009, -4/+12But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall - swicken, on 03/05/2009, -0/+7Actually the tv they were using was a pretty inexpensive one.
And pinball machines are expensive themselves.
You toss an LCD under glass you aren't going to damage it. It isn't any more fragile then a pinball machine and certainly not any more expensive. - inactive, on 03/05/2009, -2/+9You need a fairly robust table for those sort of shenanigans.
