----------------------------------------------------------------------
Setting up Multiplayer Sessions
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Simplest (Method A):
1. Run one instance of the game with Network Mode = Server (commonly known
as the session Host)
2. Set the Network Mode of the other machines to Client and enter the IP
address of Server machine for each. If all machines are within the same
house or office, use the local IP address (LAN)
3. Start the Server instance first. The Clients should connect within a
couple of seconds upon clicking Start, if things are working.
Running a public Server (Method B):
1. On the Server machine, enter a Server Name, and check Publish. This
will cause the Server to ping a Lobby application (running on the Web
server) periodically during the game with game session statistics (players,
frags, etc).
2. When the client instances click Refresh on the Global Server browser,
it will display a list of all Servers currently running that are "Published"
(in theory, never tested this beyond 3 Servers, will soon find out)
3. Clicking on one of those Servers will populate the IP and Port fields.
If the server is password protected, you will need to enter it yourself.
4. This arrangement assumes the Server has a valid internet IP; or if it
is behind a NAT device like a router, it should have the listening port
(default 1626) forwarded to it. UDP doesn't work if the Server is behind a
NAT, haven't figured out why, but I would recommend keeping UDP un-checked
in all cases (meaning uses TCP protocol).
Running a LAN server (Method C):
1. Preferably use Method A, just enter the LAN IP of the Server.
2. Or try the LAN Client, LAN Server selection. What this tries to do is
list published Servers that have the same Internet (WAN) IP as the browsing
Client instance, and connect them via their local (LAN) IP addresses. Might
not work at all except for simple LANs with a single router/gateway, typical
in a home or small business. I'm open to suggestions on better ways for
doing this (maybe a TCP broadcast? Anyone get something like that working?). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37DOOD!!! This is awesome!!!! Everyone is gonna love this!!! MEGA DUGG!!!!
- stosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16For those of you who don't know...Director is a tool for creating application prototypes, web games, cd roms, educational software...etc. Director is not flash and nothing like flash. Director has a much faster 2d engine, 3d engine and can create windows and mac executables out of the box without any additional software. Plus you can extend directors capabilities with xtras. Anyway Director is need of a big update so we should tell adobe that we want 3d games on the web and a linux plugin! (and maybe make it cheaper >_>)
Here's a link to the product page.

Other cool 3d Shockwave games:
www.shockwave3d.com - stosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Shockwave not FLASH! Shockwave has had 3d for about 6 years now...
- Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9man, they port shockwave to OSX, but not Linux?
even with 15k sigs asking http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?linuxswp
and it seems they said it would only take a few thousand requests http://internet.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/10/16/1822259&tid=48&tid=120&tid=13&tid=31
though i hear wine or crossover(office) may be able to get it up n runnin
Still, from google images, it looks kinda cool - but no digg as i cant run the thing - RUFiO006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This thing is definitely front page material. It's like playing Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 right in your browser! I can safely say this is one of the most impressive online free games I have ever seen, particularly graphically. Check it out, I assure you it won't disappoint. It has a couple of bugs, but if this is only a beta this thing will go through the roof. Recommended - digg+
- ratman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Exactly how does one mega-digg something?
- StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10First Person Shooter Shooters? Do you also like using ATM Machines?
- samKreuzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great gfx. It's possible to play vs. other "real" people? Multiplayer?
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7this is not web 2.0. It's just 3d graphics in shockwave. Has been around for years. I guess the same can be done as Java Applet, ActiveX control or Flash.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17well beside the digg button
there is this little button that says MEGA
but its REALLLLLLy tiny
so just believe!
AND CLICK! - HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It works fine on my iBook in Safari. Did you change the renderer to OpenGL? The default is DirectX.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9flash can use 3d also. shockwave was just built specifically for 3d.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5..director uses graphics acceleration while flash only uses the processor (for vector graphics)
- Johnny1337h4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5man, I can't believe i'm getting over 100fps in a multiplayer 3d first person shooter running in my browser
- stosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yup. I just played a couple games. Check under network in the settings.
- dementedd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it does support linux, change the video mode to opengl kkthx
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it also has openGL
- fusebox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Does anyone remember kkrieger, which came out a year or so back? The graphics bettered Quake 2 and it was only 96kb! Available @ http://www.theprodukkt.com/
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, you need to install that in order to use your mouse to control the guy in the game. if you dont, youll be forced to use the keyboard to aim..
it only takes a half-second to install. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3works fine in OSX... go to settings and change the rendered it to opengl.
- towersofdub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, a lot has changed with Flash 8. They added a raster library which is pretty fast and can do things Director can't without custom code or Xtras (like blur & noise). But you're totally right about 3d... you'd have to write your own 3d lib which couldn't take advantage of GPUs and such. Flash can create win/mac executables too, but they have pretty limited access to the filesystem.
I think one day Flash and Director will merge. Flash should move to an all OpenGL rendering engine... - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"LAME! Direct X only. Some days I wonder why i'm a Linux user... Oh yeah, because we are better."
you are also an idiot, did you try going to the settings and changing it to openGL? u shouldnt be on linux you chump. - olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3works fine in my firefox 1.5.0.1
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ok i've started the game, and i can confirm that it's the best web-game i have ever seen. and it runs smoothly on my 2 year old laptop!!
- howser2007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, this is INSANE! This is just like playing Unreal Tournament Classic, but in a web browser! Very cool.
- ashura001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow...Very impressive, especially for Shockwave.
I used to despise Shockwave games but this is just cool. - vtwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg that! Just what we (Director developers) needed, a Shockwave Killer-App!
Spread the news, real 3d games in your browser thanks to the one and only Shockwave plug-in!!
Adobe should invest in revamping Director, combine the Shockwave 3d API's with Postscript 3d, and they could bring a real 3d standard to the web.
Shockwave 3d is by far the most used plug-in on the Web that can generate hardware accelerated 3d (using OpenGL or DirectX). Java cannot do that, nor Active X nor any widely used plug-ins. Sure there are some VRML plug-ins that can do similar accelerated 3d, but you cannot do much in terms of interactivity using a Web VRML plug-in. While one could build a better interactive standard using VRML, Shockwave is here and already in use by millions, and there are a good bunch of unemployed Director pros that are ready to produce new software if it catches on.
Flash is way more ubiquitous than Shockwave, but the latter still has a market share that surpass anything that can produce equivalent OpenGL/Direct X 3d. Also, people are usually not very hesitant to install the plug-in, since it's from Macromedia (now Adobe), a company they know for Flash and many other things.
I hope Adobe sees the light, and doesn't neglect Director like Macromedia did in the last few years. Shockwave 3d is good, but hasn't changed much since version 8.5.
I'm working on a Super Mario 64 editor, built with Director. I have a Shockwave demo where you can fly around some actual Mario 64 levels as decoded from the game. It's much less impressive than Phosphor, be warned. If you want to try it, look for: "peach castle" in google (with quotes). Please don't digg my page (yet) as it would fry my server! - ace11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this is awesome!
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't believe it's a 5MB browser game.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hakdragon: agreed. OpenGL is kickin' like chickin' on this PowerBook
I love this! Joining a network game now... - Dhalamar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Cool little game. :)
- thekidder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is great. Good graphics (for shockwave), great gameplay, and it's fun.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'll play let's go
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and the framerate is awsome too, wow super impressive
- nomechingues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn these is great i love it best digg these year ++++++
- OwlBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very cool, Software mode works on OS X, but is very slow. If you switch to OpenGL then its fine.
Very impressive what they can make work in a browser these days. - DiggerMouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2History lesson for ya: Shockwave was not ported to Mac, it was ported FROM Mac, TO PC. There was no PC version before 4.0. Still, I'll second that: you Linux nerds need some Shockwave 3D luvvin' :-D
- Diseage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3wow. this is just amazing. I'm sure that in the not-too-distant future that ALL applications will be like this, only more powerful than they are today. The "computer" will be a transparent internet browser. Tie this with the online OS, you can see where it's all headed.
- richpav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like playing FPS games as much as the next guy, but whatever happened to the promises of a 3D web? When there's so much more that could be done in the same environment, why is shooting other people in the head such a popular pastime to the exclusion of everything else?
That being said, it's still pretty damn impressive. - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this game is so fracking sweet :D
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, that's a good game to keep on a thumb drive. It used procedural synthesis to generate everything. The graphics were a lot better than all but the best modern games.
- kejistan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Obviously one has never played UT or Quake...
- dcmiltown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn adobe now. :)
- purplfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How do you play with other people? Computer or human. (its just not the same when you play with yourself...).
Btw awesome graphics. - Daem0nX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really neat concept. Dugg
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow i did find some bugs though.
I was able to run under the entire level untouchable. - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game requires a lot of bandwidth for just 8 players. Make sure you have at least 512k upload available if you want to host a server.
- fiv3isaliv3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amazing.
- whybird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You are right - you shouldn't. On the other hand, I have been dealing with that particular company (it was Andrade Arts, wasn't it?) for years and I will vouch for them... not that you should take the work of some stranger on the net, either, especially one who has just signed up for digg today, as I have ;-)
OTOH, SiteAdvisor also gives their site the green light: http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/director-xtras.com?safesearch -
