- JeyNyce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36"only the new 360 will have the ability to use IPTV"
I don't believe that. Didn't Microsoft said they sold over 10 million 360s? (don't know the exact number) They are not going to leave all of those people in the dark are they. I expect a patch soon. - Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31This guy is full of ***** of course you will be able to use iptv on old Xbox 360 why not its just software
- baldr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I totally agree with you, IPTV is definitely something that can be implemented with a software update, and there is no reason to not give it to everyone with a 360 since they can make money off of the service.
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16May I suggest a patch?
-While Premium Xbox 360 Retail Price != 299.99
+While Premium Xbox 360 Retail Price > 299.99 - theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The wording is ambiguous... Leo asks whether there's a new X360 or new functionality coming out... Paul answers that it is indeed a new version of the X360. Then he says "Basically it's an xbox with IPTV and a larger hard drive"
well, ok. We know that the larger hard drive is a moot point, because we'll be able to buy one separately. It may be that the larger hard drive is *required* for IPTV, because 13gb (less for most) isn't going to cut it recording hd tv on the fly. In that sense, the new X360 will be IPTV out of hte box, while us current owners will has to buy an HD to get it.
There's no reason why IPTV requires a new xbox, unless they for some reason require that HANA chip with it.
Plus the new X360 will probably be quieter, making it more "media platform" ready for the living room than the current revision. - rlutterb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18If MS seriously has sold 10 million Xbox360s now, and presumably a few mil more by then, they'd be ridiculously stupid to abandon this huge install base. Maybe a larger HDD will be required, but in the end, there's no way they'll bring functionality that 10+ million can't use. This is Bill's "trojan horse", remember?
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Or they can make it so you can install your own hard drive.
- kauko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"I think the price drops will happen when Sony release the PS3 in Europe. Makes sense."
I'm not too sure about that, although I'm hoping for a 360 price drop too.
The 60GB version of PS3 will cost 600-650 EUR (780-850 USD!) and the 20GB version 500-550 EUR depending on where you live. You can get a Xbox 360 Premium + Gears of War (for example) bundle for 400 EUR right now, so Microsoft isn't really facing price pressure here.
The European PS3 launch is looking pretty good in terms of games (much better than the US launch), but I still believe that the sales will be limited to the hardcore early adopters. Sony is over estimating our willingness to pay 500-650 EUR for it.
The original Xbox launched at 500 EUR in 2002 (I think PS2 was selling for 300-400 EUR then). It sold poorly and Microsoft was forced to drop the price to 300 EUR just a few weeks after the launch and offer two free games for those who'd already bought one at the rip-off price.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Leo has been doing a Windows podcast with him for a while now.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't see any confirmation. Confirmation would have to come from an official source who worked at Microsoft.
- testdrivemedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I too have the original Xbox. And it was a bit of a downer when support pretty much ended the moment the 360 landed. But, since getting my Xbox 360 my original Xbox has become a dedicated media center running XBMC and a 500gig hard drive storing all of my music and the majority of my movies and TV series that aren't yet burnt to DVDs. Oh, and three games. Forza Motorsport because i don't want to start over on Xbox360, Manhunt because you can't buy it here, and San Andreas because i enjoy modding it and adding new cars etc.
The thing that has really blown me away about my Xbox 360, is the fact it just plays copied movies right out of the box on DVD. I never expected it to do something like that.
As for IPTV not working on the original Xbox 360's i can't imagine Microsoft doing something like that. By the time IPTV launches there will probably be over 15000 Xbox 360 owners. That's a lot of customers to piss off in one sweep of the hand.
I really hope they don't go through with this, and allow us original 360 owners the pleasure of using the service. - thefat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8If they do this it won't hurt me too much. As I will then have a guilt free reason to do the DVD firmware mod. To recoupe some of that money I drop on a new 360. IF THIS IS REAL.
- jayman16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Paul has work in and outside of MS for over 15 years... He's better than an employee, cause he has less NDA's.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, and Kevin Rose said the iPhone would include CDMA.
It's not confirmed. - perilousone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This interview of Chris Satchell, General Manager of the Game Development group at Microsoft seems to suggest that we will get IPTV on the current hardware. He suggests downloads, upgrades, or a disk as distribution of the software.
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/video_player/popup.php?sid=6164007&pid=937723 - theonlyvlad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hmm, nm. Didn't listen long enough. Paul specifically mentions "specific circuitry" for IPTV. Bummer. It might be HDMI actually, because then they could DRM the streaming TV using that platform, as much as they want.
- Slippy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Of course they would deny it.. any company would as it would affect sales of their current model.
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No way, I think you should stay away from anything remotely computer related, It must be the curse.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just in time for Grand Theft Auto IV.........
- watership, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The lack of information is just causing everyone to freak out. This is all FUD. The 360 you buy today, will play every single game that will be released... ever. Everyone needs to stop thinking of hardware revisions as a "NEW XBOX". The PS2 has 12 hardware revisions. Does anyone remember when they completely dropped firewire? Where were the freakouts then?
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If it were really important info, it WOULD be under an NDA. This is just Paul acting like an insider without actually being one. No digg.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3or maybe it coincides with Halo 3.
- cookiemonster01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this title is really misleading
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because they didn't want to cannibalize sales. And no one's dumb. Everyone knew the original DS was clunky and Nintendo has had a history of redesigning it's handhelds before. Those who bought the DS at launch were well aware that Nintendo would spruce it up with a redesign.
However, the big difference is that Nintendo has never ADDED functionality to its redesigns. Only shrink the package and brighten the screen. Nothing more. - YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know I'm stating the obvious and it won't happen, but USB support for external hard drive enclosures would be fantastic.
To keep selling their own hard drives with the proper connection to the top of the machine, they just need to load it with free games and keep charging the retarded premium for them. $100 for 20gbs??? - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Oy, it's silly programmer mistakes like these that cause silly bugs.
What happens if the price goes up? Far fetched, I know, but you're program is broken! And as far as I know, you will never pay only $299.99 because of sales tax and whatnot.
Improved version:

"Buy 360 v2.0" - I fixed the mistakes in the first one. That'll be $100 for my time please. - SnapThrow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I haven't listened to the podcast yet so I don't know if this is addressed, but your achievements and gamerscore are attached to your gamertag so they will follow you. I bounce between two 360s rigth now under the same gamertag with a memory card with no problems.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want IPTV. I am not sure I would be to happy to repurchase a 360 just to get IPTV.
- watership, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You've been through 4 Xbox 360s in the week following Christmas? I'm sorry, I'm having a very very hard time believing that. Did you put your 360's over a humidifier or something? I don't know anyone who's 360 has broken yet.
- bluekill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Why was this show called Windows Weekly when all they talked about was Apple products and Steve Jobs keynote. People really need to stop stroking Steve Jobs penis because im sure he's sore by now. The xbox360 should be capable of IPTV as is, modified xbox1's are capable of IPTV right now. And a bigger hard drive doesnt require a new console. Hopefully this report is wrong.
- Laytonx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Paul Thurrott is great, love this podcast.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got mine at launch and it broke while trying to watch "Da Ali G Show" back in May, giving me the 3 red lights. I had purchased the extended service plan directly from Microsoft and they sent me a new one within a week. That one broke in the same way the second time I used it. I got another one within a week and it's still going strong.
Just my own anecdotal account regarding the occurance of defective 360s. - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Paul also has a huge fan base including my mom. She saw in him a restaurant the other night and asked him for an autograph and he totally back slapped her! Paul Thourott is the devil.
/slander - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Rose got a lot of things wrong about the iPhone. It must have been embarrassing to have been a mule for the dissemination of false information. - Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Paul also said there was going to be a home server before CES, I guess he was wrong about that too!
/sarcasim - dougm68, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think its coming with a new duel blu-ray, HD Burner, 250 GB harddrive, and wii-mote style remote control which can be used as an action controller when plugged into the mic outlet on a 360 controller. Oh and 60GB iPod. Yep, iPod. They don't wanna piss people off by including a zune with it.
- hufferstl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2At the Microsoft Keynote, they said the exact opposite of this. I'm not buying it.
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13I'm still waiting for a official price drop, come on Microsoft it is a year later and I won't pay th early adopter price. Oh well, I'm happy with my gamecube and xbox games, I just got Zelda: Twilight Princess and it is amazing. I'm glad Microsoft will decide when I get so I don't have to.
Till then

I could care less about a new 360 and IPTV. I get a lot of free over the air hdtv in my area. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Paul Thurrott Confirms" I stopped reading there. I have learned to never trust Paul Thurrott. He said a lot about Vista beta release dates and it turns out that they where all wrong.

They alienated 25 million Xbox owners by abruptly canceling all development projects and ending the production run. - kfsutops, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Why would they price decrease the XBOX 360? It's still selling well. At their current price point, they are still way below a PS3. XBOX 360 was the #1 seller during the Christmas Holiday.
I love my 360 and hope they do a price drop. But, from a business standpoint, the xbox's don't need to be price decreased. - bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, thanks!
- jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Bart
I believe you mean smaller chips, and quieter *fans*. - stephbu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@TheOnlyVlad, The "Ana" video scaling chip is included with all 360's.
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm with you too, a feature like that requiring new hardware will piss off a lot of consumers. I don't see it going down that way. If there's a new xbox360 it'll be quieter and have hddvd built in, which makes sense.
Then again MS has bowed down to content providers before, maybe there's some fancy-dancy hardware DRM to make recorded streamed hd content look like poo. - stephbu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some comments - lotta people think IPTV == TV over the web - its not... You'll need to sign up to a carrier offering IPTV in your neighbourhood like Verizon or AT&T, then and only then will IPTV be an option.
How do ya think that Halo 3 would run chewing 90% of the CPU/IO cycles AND still record 24 in HD at the same time? You wouldn't... In the same breath does 360-IPTV mean I need a bigger disk? Not if it doesn't actually record anything. IPTV is a streamed video system, you can create PVR experiences by just storing the *much smaller* program metadata. Think of it like bookmarking, setting 24 to record could be a task as small as adding it to your favourites.
The noisiest bit of the 360 isn't the fans - its the 12x DVDROM - good for short loading screens - crap in a small room. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet this is innacurate and we can expect a clarification from Microsoft in a day or two. By Q4 2007 there could easily be 15 million 360's in circulation and they aren't just going to walk away from that kind of cash. More likely you will need the larger hard drive to use IPTV. Price cut on the original 360 and the hdmi enabled 360 would go for $400 U.S.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what? microsoft abandoning its fans. It can't be!!!!
/sarcasm - bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As lame as this might sound but one thing that would hold me back from upgrading my XBox360 is the thought of losing all of my achievements. I've really invested a lot of time trying to unlock all of them. On the other hand if I could transfer them I would upgrade my no problem.
