- maskd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to definently pick one of these up. I'd rather spend $60 on this then go out and buy a PSP/PS3/XBOX. I can't say that "MEGA AWESOME ROMG ROFL!111GFXOMGLOL!!!" graphics really got my blood pumping. Most new games have gameplay comparable to *****. Hell playing with a peice of ***** is probably more enjoyable then most of the new games out.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Patents last 20 year. Most of the patents for the Famicom (1983) expired back in 2003 and that's why Nintendo stopped building the original hardware. They no longer could legally protect the hardware beyond trademark law for the system name. A few components such as the 10NES lockout chip remained patented for the US hardware (1985) but those are all expired now.
The NES is now fair game. Anyone can do whatever they want with it short of copying the trademarked names or the software.
The Genesis patents should expire sometime around 1988 and 1989 and the SNES around 1990 or so. Depends what exact year the stuff was patented. Later this year most of the Patents on the Japanese SEGA Master system (1985) will expire with any US patents (1986) expiring sometime in 2006. - eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1patents 20 years. Copyrights at least 95. Copyright is busted.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"the patent ran out on this digg a few months ago"
I actaully LOL'ed. - SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how is 60 bucks to much? honestly i think its cheap. I would pay it, and I am going be getting this for someone for Christmas. O well, personal preference. Had this link for awhile, but good job posting it again for those who missed it.
- vikingscool, on 09/01/2009, -0/+12011.
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder how long before the Sega Genesis or Master System patents run out?
- Gotar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Get a Yobo those things are nice and small. However, they feel kinda cheap and lightweight. It works great though and no RF adapter needed!
- skooma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the patent ran out on this digg a few months ago
- ewingsquadron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So where does it talk about the patent expiring? I really doubt that's the case.
I've seen products like these before, are you sure they just aren't licensed by Nintendo? - JackandCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was always under the impression that patents lasted 70 years after the patenter's death, or 90 - 120 years for anonymous patenters, maybe i am thinking of trademarks or copyrights.
Oh well. - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well... That's just plain awesome.
- martanio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any Idea when Super Nintendo will have its license expire?
- djinfidel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it's new "Slim, sexy design"
- Singe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This I know since I already have a third party NES.

http://worldclassmods.34sp.com/wp/?p=235 - outz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hated that damned robot. mine started freaking out and scared me. i was young.
- ltff26115, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still have rob the robot that came with mine came with gyro might and duck hunt
- EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I won't be getting one, but this is a great digg.
- oleeid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HM? Can I use my European games on this?
- st0ney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the wireless controllers you can order
- xyzzyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For $5-$10 you can get a new 72pin connector for your NES. And it's easy to replace. It fits over the motherboard, no soldering.
- apg88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can get NES games for like a dollar at ebgames. They got hundreds of them...
- ptayanvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0emulator would seem to be the more cost-effective option
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my original NES still works perfectly
- lasthunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always loved playing NES games.
- weare138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wouldnt pay 60 bucks but yeah, its cool.
- DardanAeneas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A good example of why techonology patents should last only so long...
- amlynch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was one who was raised on "the original equipment" and I loved it at the time.
- deviationer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0soon enough all the old school console patents will run out and you will have a company make a box that will play NES/SNES/Genesis etc..
- psyke69, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0an companys that make cheap imitations of NES, will never compare to an Original NES, like who wants to tell people oh yea i got a rip off old school nintendo, sounds like a piece of junk an a waste of money hahaha
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aces from Nintendo for letting the patent run out ,rather then go after every cracky way to keep it going. The market benefits when patents go! It's how the system was designed.
- entropy357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or you could just download an emulator and every single ROM title ever released for the NES... for free.
- jleibow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I HATE ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT WASTE YOUR TIME POINTING OUT THE FACT THAT SOMETHING IS "OLD NEWS". Don't you have anything better to do with your time? It's because of you people, that any sort of social community website will never have any sort of essential value. Get a life, get an education, get a job...DO SOMETHING WITH YOURSELVES.
I will now only read the headlines and not bother with reading comments. It's too bad, because some people in here actually have some knowledgeable and valuable comments to make.
Anyway, good story. - SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh wait correction you might be able to play the old games its in testing.
- JoCliMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hm, my NES still works too, but it would be nice to have wireless controllers. Then again $60 is way to pricey, and good luck on finding good games for it...
- notkevin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My NES still works perfectly, I gave it to my grandmother so she can play the games, she has beat Zelda like 20 times. Her memory is bad so it fun for her to play it over and over again.
- matt72186, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've actually purchased one of these sexy consoles, I was supposed to get my preorder at the Classic Gaming Expo, but unfortunetely they didn't have them. It really pissed me off, that I have to wait until October to get this when I preordered it months ago... The controllers work great on my classic NES though, and surely will work just as great if not better with this.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The patent did not run out. It lasts a lot longer than that.
My top-loading NES Jr (official product) still runs perfectly fine. That version of the system is nearly indestructable, and has an SNES-style NES gamepad. I suggest anyone with the original box NES upgrade to that one. - jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry for the dupe, it didn't show up in the search. The patent information came from the latest issue of EGM. I personally use an emulator if I get a nostalgic itch but it would be nice to play the old NES sitting on the couch with a wireless controller.
- SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"digging" deeper in the sight you also find this which is worth reading.
http://www.playmessiah.com/onlinestore/gnex_faq.htm
which says you can't play your old NES games, and its still licensed hardware. I would have thought it a little insane that Nintendo would not re-up there licensees especially when the old NES/SNES games are supposed to be downloads in the new Nintendo Revolution. - SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sight doesn't actually show that the Paten has run out on the NES/Falcom, it only shows knockoffs of it. Unless some one can find a copy of the Paten, or something that actually states that its over, the title of this is untrue. Remember that RBI Baseball and others originally came with different cases because Tengen didn't want to pay for the seal of approval from Nintendo, this could be a similar thing.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you just can't beat the original though. There is this store in my town where the sell the original NES for $34. Awesome.
- Rojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I emailed the Play Messiah guys and asked if they are gonna sell a Light gun for the new system and they told me to buy one off eBay and gave me the link haha. Also they said all original equipment works with the new system, so boys and girls pull out the old power glove and do it Captain N style. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096554/
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think finding the old games would be a problem. If they can release or make it ROM compatible, then we'll be talking.
- psyke69, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0ever since i was a young fella i played the NES that my uncle owned, i always wanted a NES but by the time i was old enough the NES couldnt be bought anymore it was the SNES that was sold so i was totalled bummed coz the SNES like was ok but was nothin compared with the NES haha, anyway years and years of searching for a NES one day i had a novel idea of looking on EBAY for a NES and i found loads and loads of the things and there is no short supply of games on ebay either that is for sure. I purchased a NES for $50 unrefurbished with 11 games an 2 controllers, i refurbished the NES my self purchasing a 72 pin connector for about $10, and now the games work and it is great. I have an XBOX 360 a Wii and a PS3 (nerdy huh? lol) but the NES is something i will always play. I reckon that someone instead of me coz im a lazy an couldnt be bothered, but find someway to synchronise the NES with a PC, installing a hard drive on the nes and just getting games for the NES off the internet good idea huh?? hahaha well i think it is anyway.
the NES will never die as long as there are people out there who love playing mario, double dragon, zelda etc. - psyke69, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0if you have an old NES but cant get it too work an dont want to touch it yourself there are people out there who will refurbish your nintendo for a small fee, F*CK cheap imitations
- SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm maybe not everyone wants to play the games on a computer entropy, or wait. could it be possible that not everyone who grew up with a nintendo likes computers? no way get out of here.
- Trecherus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When does the SNES patent run out?
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** $60? they're out their damn minds. should be half that.
- U2groupie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, the patent may have run out, but I purchased a 3rd party knockoff that plays NES games at my local dirt mall about three years ago. You can also buy versions that have the games "built in" so you don't have to worry about carts.
I bought one simply out of nostalga. I was raised on the original equipment... the gun, the robot that never worked and all. :)
