Here is the link - grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why is it that people censor people's excitement for something?
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes, this will get all the chicks.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Get one of these and complete the package: http://www.engadget.com/2005/12/08/soundbike-puts-laughter-on-the-road/
- syukton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61. LadyAda is a SHE and not a HE. It's not like the name LADYada gives that away or anything...
2. You should read her thesis, or look at some of her other projects. She is an incredibly talented hacker. - sometemple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Ladyada writes about her Pac-Man wheels"... Ladyada is a woman. you can see her picture on her website. Phillip makes all the posts at makezine. It's so rare that a woman gets credit for something like this, and you guys have completely buried this comment! Christ!
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5But does it run linux? :P
Better question: Will the software for programing work on linux? Answer: SpokePOV will work on linux, but it only a python script, which you pass the bmp to.
NV04: "Available in red or yellow in both BMX (6.5" long) or MTB/Road (9.5" long) and blue in MTB/Road!"
Nice article, I realy want one of these things, but as NV04 pointed out, its only visible on one side : ( EDIT: NOT!!! BOTH SIDES LIGHT UP! - ZMorek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4People censor excitement because a post of "wow..." is boring, as is your post and mine replying to yours. They're not very interesting reads, in fact they're quite boring. A useful comment adds something to the thread that's interesting or useful, or perpetuates a geek-humor cliche that's still funny (or so far past funny it's funny). - ckpcw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7that is pretty much the definition of 1337.
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that mod is off the chain, no pun intended
- superfunkypants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I find it really hard to believe that this hasn't hit the general consumer market yet.
Every boy under 13 would die to have this. - ladyada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i assure you it works just fine :)
- SL33PY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quote from the site "Ladyada writes about her Pac-Man wheels "
her bicycle not his ;) - svref, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How's their water-proofiness? That exposed circuit board doesn't look to reliable.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate to be a Digg Nazi (okay no I don't...Muhahahah, etc.) but why is a blog link gettting Dugg so much more than the previously posted direct link:
http://digg.com/links/Light_Up_Animated_Pac-Man_Bicycle_Wheels - lazerdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Generally doesn't need to be too waterproof on the playa...
- TheDeuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a similar product that is currently available. http://www.hokeyspokes.com/ though this isn't as cool because you cannot program it.
- sometemple, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8HIS bicycle??? HIS???? c'mon people... It's HER bicycle. it's HERS!!!
- gondoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is the coolest damn thing I've ever seen... Now I just need it for my twenty-fos.
- Schda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'd probably have to find a way to encase this or coat it with something to make it waterproof. I'd love to have this on my bike, but it'd need to survive the rain/snow.
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Link to the story, not some blog. Reported as bad link.
Sorry to bury an otherwise interesting article, but this isn't rocket-science, people. F---ing annoying. LINK TO THE ORIGINAL, ACTUAL STORY ONLY. - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, nevermind - just read @CJHtxGeek's comment. All is forgiven.
- moshguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm impressed.
This is a great Proof Of Concept. I think with a little more tinkering and some good engineering, this would be the coolest set of wheels on the street. - Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wonder if this would go on a car as well. Either way, one trip trough the rain and you're *****, i suppose.
- AtariEric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They ALL move on that sine curve at the *same time*- your eyes adjust.
- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is *exactly* what my first thought was. I have to purchase new beauty rings, I think I'll look into the feasability of this.
The problem (aside from any potential legal issues) is that the current kit design likely isn't going to work. A bicycle tire only spins at 10 or 15MPH maximum. Your average vehicle runs around at 65MPH or more. Power and control is going to be a problem too. I'm not the type that wants to go through four sets of tires changing batters or to program them. I would rather the whole thing is controlled and powered by an onboard computer in the vehicle.
I do have some ideas though that might prove this viable. :) - weevilgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a discussion of that in the comments of the tutorial page. The difficulties would be getting the lights to flash quickly enough, and securing the whole thing so that it doesn't fly off at high speed and hurt someone.
- trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why so many chips, you could do everything with just a PIC18F44
- sp1ke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2just plain ole awesome...
- Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, who's going to break it to her that her bike is upside down.
- Meowmix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Haha, very cool. I used to play around with electroluminescent wire a lot. You could do similar things, but not as detailed because of the nature of wire.
LED was just too expensive for me. ;_;
I want one with Mrs. Pac Man! - aletornw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1one kit for one wheel :( 45u$s per wheel
- JDOG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I want 5 of these...some of the ones on the how-to page are shweeet!
- walkeraj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Incidentally, ladyada is actually a female... just for pedantics' sake.
- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yes, its cool. But am I the only one who realizes it WONT WORK? Sure, its just fine if your wheels are spinning and your not going anywhere (like in the picture), but if your moving it wont work, because the leds wont be moving in a circular pattern. Since you will be moving forward at the same time, the leds will move in a sin curve.
- ladyada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0using 8 DIP latches is the simplest and cheapest way, the kit must be very easy to make so no SMT parts are allowed.
- jetsfandb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed! I was thinking of how cool it look on my Harley. Only the image would have to a liitle more bad ass than Pacman :).
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9I really need to make some of these LED projects.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Make sure you go to the tutorial page and check out the animated gif version...
- brian2k1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6if you RTFA it says he did that just for the photograph...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2No, it's a HIS bicycle. it's upside-down.
Anyways diggdamn that's cool, maybe someone could 1-up it and install something like that on their automobile, if that's legal that is, ha :] - monsieurgrand02, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Dugg. Old Skhool.
- beta1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Cool pic.

- CaptanAwal, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7awesome
- CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Yeah, I didnt link directly there for it seemed that make might be able to take the traffic better incase of more traffic...
