- Sophren, on 10/10/2007, -12/+139I'd say it's more because Japan is running out of people who *don't* already own a DS.
- Shrubber, on 10/10/2007, -7/+100Yeah, a Final Fantasy VII game will do that.
- atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -8/+75I'm a DS fanboy through and through, but it's nice that Nintendo is finally getting some competition. Granted, it's not much but at least Nintendo can't rest on their laurels like they did in the 90s. With the next gen handhelds, I expect dual touch screen support in wide screen format, 802.11g support, data syncing with consoles, and support for SD. I wouldn't have this expectation if Sony was not in the handheld business.
So yes, let me say it: I'm pleased with PSP sales even if I don't own one. - BlueSkyfish, on 10/10/2007, -17/+59Title is misleading (but I wouldn't expect anything less from engadget) PSP sold more consoles this week than the DS. Overall the number of PSPs sold is less than half the number of DSs sold.
- Ocelot13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41i thought they just kept buying new ones every month.
- loganhid, on 10/10/2007, -5/+40Save in Japan? The PS3 is selling very well in Japan, it's the 360 that needs saving in Japan
- v0yeur, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33no - that behaviour is reserved for iPod users
- africansk8er, on 10/10/2007, -11/+35The DS is having a bit of a game drought right now, and the PSP's got a bunch of stuff coming out. Wait about one week for the new Zelda to come out, and there might be a nice increase of sales.
- loganhid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26Competition is good for us consumers anyway
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24You're a fanboy, alright. A gaming fanboy.
It's always nice to see those around here. - felman87, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Zelda is already out in japan
- mrhorseshoe, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25Total worldwide sales (from vgchartz.com):
DS: 50.28M
PSP: 23.37M
Total Japanese sales:
DS: 19.41M
PSP: 6.11M
The PSP still has a ways to go. - Lixie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23The End is Nigh! Repent! Repent!
- stevealford, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I have both a PSP and a DS. I prefer the PSP most of the time, but there are some awesome games for DS as well. Anything that will stimulate more advances in functionality, graphics, gameplay, and game quality from both sides is welcome in my book. I don't give a ***** who sells more because I'm not personally invested in either company, I just like when they strive to make all of us customers go "ooh" and "ahh."
Cheers to you, atomicpoet, for being a DS-only owner who doesn't scream "PSP SUCKS, ***** $ONY !" It's a very refreshing attitude you have there... and possibly too mature for digg. You might be asked to leave... - Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -14/+31It's probably because everyone in Japan already owns a DS.
- blast_flame, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Yeah it is kinda hard to sell new handhelds when the entire population of japan has at least 5 each.
- bassgoonist, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Or perhaps everyone in Japan already has a DS...
- protogenxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13You could get a bunch of E.T. cartridges label them Final Fantasy and it would be the number one game in japan.
- Zephkiel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13He took the topic title from Engadget's article...
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1110... hours... a day?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8these vg posts turn digg into a souped up teh vestibule
- Jumangi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9What stupid comments by Engadget. The PSP outsells the DS for a week and they make comparisons to Atari.
- felman87, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I have both and I love em. PSP has some great games, people just don't wanna pick up the good ones. Try Crush. It's an ingenious puzzle game.
- icsbase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Can you notice how Sony fanboys digg down every comment about Nintendo DS selling better or Nintendo domination in Japan? It *IS* quite clear fact that DS is selling PSP out in 3:1in Japan and 2,2:1 in world wide sales. Stop being ignorant and give Nintendo the credit they have deserved after long time of being the one at the back. Wii & DS are the hot things now, accept it or not but that is the fact.
- Kypt, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Like people have said, this is only for the week and the PSP is still a lot lower (i believe ratio is close to 2:1) than the DS, yet the slim IS an amazing upgrade from the old PSP. Added to the fact that new games are finally out and many are getting announced (new Clank game, FFVII:CC, FF:Tactics, Kingdom Hearts etc) it will just boost the PSP sales to not lagg so far behind. Sure I doubt it will "catch up" to the DS, but you will definitely see an increase of sales world wide.
PSP now has the games, the weight, the size, the multimedia capabilities, and even the ability to run many great homebrews that aren't completely limited to ISOs and emulators to be the competition to the DS it should've been from the beginning. Either way, I'm glad to own both :). Love Jean D'Arc on my PSP and can't wait to try the new Zelda for my DS. - Ghoztt, on 10/10/2007, -12/+19OMG FOR -ONE WEEK- TEH PSP OUTSELLS THE DS!!!11e1even!1111!11 Next week - back to the status quo of DS leading sales.
- Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -12/+18should add a "...for a week" to the title
thats changes this news a littlle - charityjustice, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You're on the subway almost 10 hours a day?
Sux to be you. - crushfan, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Totally off-topic and probably won't relate to your comment but I need to shout it out. Yeah. I love my PSP, too. Really. I'm a hardcore PSP player. Good for me? Thanks. Anyway, I enjoy what I do, but I am never satisfied with PSP community. Because Nintendo DS always kick us in the arse. We have good games but they're not enough. We don't have the soul. We're even able to play great compilations and with homebrew, our devices becames a multimedia state-of-art object. But, it's all about Sony, it's all about sales. PSP always reminds me of these. Why? Because Nintendo DS have the soul, PSP doesn't. I'm not a psycho. Don't bury me, bro.
- ekin09, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I love my PSP.. I use it 10 hours a day atleast, mainly for music and playing games on the subway. I see way more people with DSs though. Watch the PSP sales jump when SLIM comes out, I'm looking forward to picking it up.
- somesthetic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4because DS dominates everything in Japan.
I thought I made that part clear. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Well, it's still misleading. He could've taken the liberty of clarifying it.
- mastertop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6good comment, wrong place
- Hellmark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Only last week's sales was the PSP on top. Total sales, in Japan, its 19 million DS's to 6 million PSPs. The PSP is still getting its ass handed to it.
- ekin09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4hmm I don't think you understood. I'm saying I use it like an iPod ... at school , the office, commuting ,which is more than 10 hours a day. I highly recommend the PSP for people who live life on the go.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What do you do about the battery? Do you keep an extra battery on you? (Honest question)
- blackwallet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4dugg for last paragraph
- gamemaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"The point of the article is to point out the the PSP may finally be getting some momentum back."
Really? I thought the point of the article was that a Final Fantasy game had been released. - mlvassallo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Just sales for the week, not all time, where the DS is kicking ass and taking names.
- jessejace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Do you have glaucoma? They are in stock everywhere.
- funknjunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm not surprised at this surge... Nothing good has been released for DS recently and Final Fantasy just came out and them Japanese worship it like a religion.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -7/+9you mean 360 for both of those, right?
- 3leggedHorse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2PSP needs a matte screen version anyone tried using those things in the sunlight.
- Trax91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Who you are calling fanboy, fanboy?
- j1ggy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Can you say homebrew?
- dogson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3if your the least intrested in playing guitar get Jam sessions http://www.ubi.com/US/Games/Info.aspx?pId=5560
- ekin09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually I have thought about buying a spare battery but I get the 10 hours out of the single battery, on and off of course.. I turn off the wireless lan to save on power consumption.
- xmkatx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3touche!
- tommybear, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The DS is cheaper and has better content. I'll give nintendo credit for making a nice machine at the right price, But the real credit goes to the developers who drive the actual sales.
- chronovore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lessee, a new Final Fantasy game AND the launch of the PSP-2000 (Slim & Lite) - is anyone really surprised that this can eclipse the DS for a week or two?
