- psg188, on 10/12/2007, -13/+154wow if I could digg this 100 times I would...
"To these students however, it is not an end-all multimedia device. It is just some shiny black thing that doesn’t play Animal Crossing."
this stuff is hilarious... - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -11/+129Damn you sony for making our children cry! What will they do next? They sell an expensive console that hinders innovation?
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -4/+107next thing you know it, Michael Jackson is gonna stock-up on Nintendo DS's
- Spence10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58I feel bad for the kid. It's probably similar to when i was a young-un, and went to a friend's to play his "nintendo". The only problem was that he had no games that i recognised. I discovered only in the past year that he had a sega master system, and that i just thought it was a really weird NES.
- StammesOpfer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+59read the whole story before you mark inaccurate
- techmonkey4u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Last 3 sentences of the the 3rd-to-last paragraph:
"One 11-year-old boy actually cried. Cried. You can’t buy brand loyalty like that."
Do you need a screenshot too? - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48@Saintlink: What the hell is odd about kids liking Nintendo?
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Don't forget Iwata and Reggie. They complete the triforce of Nintendo.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Damn you sony for burning us and making us have bombs in our houses! (batteries)
- jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Actually, fpsgamer, for all intents and purposes, Nintendo DOES have a face. His name is Shigeru Miyamoto, and you may have heard of him.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34A video of this happening would make a fantastic commercial for Nintendo.
- 11familyguy11, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Sometimes I cry too when I can't play Mario...you just can't help but love that pixelated, shroom eatin, goomba hoppin, bastard...
- daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Oh you're bad. That's bad and you know it haha.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37I would have cryed too! I mean, its like a 20$ watch in a rolex case!
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27So he walks around with a belt clip for his gaming system. Only in Japan could one get away with that geekery.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26This reminds me of this one kid I know, who's dad installed windows on a MacBook Pro. His cousin was visiting and his dad handed the cousin the laptop too look something up. When the kid saw the windows logo, what happened was not pretty.
- ShadySpace, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25That is the funniest ***** I've ever heard. Jesus, Sony's image couldn't get any worse, if they weren't a faceless corporate conglomorate I'd start to feel bad for them.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Everyone is digging you down because you cannot spell or type or are using too many slang abbreviations ("wud b" and "gr8"). It is not the content of your comment - but rather the delivery that nobody likes.
Or maybe it is the extreme abuse of exclaimation points? Here is a hint: if you don't end every sentance with an exclaimation point, then you wont need three of them to single out the sentance you wish to emphasize.
*dusts off hands* - Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Nothing at all, I own one myself! I'm just saying that brand loyalty and consumer buying habbits in Japan would confuse most Americans who haven't spent time in their culture.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26My Girlfriend (Japanese) thought I was crazy for dishing out 20,000 yen to buy a DS and a few games - that was until I let her play mario and tetris and now I can't keep her off it :)
Some of the ladies in the office also comment "whats that?" and have a go, a couple have even gone out and bought the new noble Pink DSL. Awesome little console. - JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18When I saw the headline I thought someone had hacked a PSP into a DS Lite housing and was going to ask why?
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22I wonder if his PSP had an SNES emu with Mario on it...
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Who's bad?
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Because it annoys Pro-Sony people. And that makes the rest of us laugh.
- MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19That's HEEE-LARIOUS!!!! ROFLMAO! As a PSP owner, I might've been mildly offended by this, but I also own a DS Lite and know how easy it is to be disappointed by Sony.
- humanerror, on 04/03/2008, -2/+16I live in Japan, and I can tell you that people who walk around with video game systems on their belt clip are every bit as reviled and ridiculed as anywhere else.
OP probably just doesn't understand enough Japanese to realize it. Ah the blissfull ignorance of English teaching in Japan. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18What about Kaz Hirai and Ken Kutaragi? I mean, no one wants to SEE their faces, because they're usually spewing some pro-PS3 propoganda about how great their new PC/Media Center/Gaming Console/Fountain of Youth/Cold Fusion Reactor/Holy Grail/George Foreman Grill is, but they're faces, nonetheless.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14No video though. I was hoping to see video of a child crying.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Yes I too really enjoy watching young children cry.
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -17/+30Once again the Japanese comsumer physche leaves the rest of the world speechless. To use the term "odd" wouldn't do this story justice. Interesting read.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I don't think this is as much cultural brand loyalty, as it is little children behaving as... well little children. The Japanese were happy enough to through their Walkmen away and get iPods, weren't they?
- Mookeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"This article does wonders for the 'kiddie' reputation Nintendo has. So you DS owners want to be associated with 11 year old cry babies? That's fitting since most of you are probably 20 and 30 year old cry babies."
That's funny. Here I was thinking mature people couldn't care less about children enjoying the same things they do and don't refer to other people as 'cry babies'. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13man, you learn a new way to make kids cry every day
- Fluidity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Severely wonders if a lot of younger kids these days have seen a NES or a Master System. At least Wii's retro gaming might get them a chance to play some classics but the liklihood of them recognising anything prior to those I guess is low, limited to le noveau generation of geeks only!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20"But it seems you much prefer getting ass ***** by mario rather than solid snake. Thats good, because snake can't reach orgasm unless he slits your throat."
I buried you, but that was ***** hilarious. - Mookeh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Eat your veggies, Japanese kid, or I'll force you to play with a PSP for the rest of the afternoon!"
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I have homebrew with Super Mario All Stars. I play that more than GTA.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What a horrible horrible man :'(
- aynrand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great read. This shall be deemed to become the reference for all future fanboyism.
- BBad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Nintendo owns the Hand-Held market and has done so for years........plus these kids were use to mario in the dslite. To come in with a psp in a ds case is likely to get a shocking response, Kid are kids. Saw this story and LMAO and I'm more of a PSP fan myself. And just think about the brands that nintendo owns Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Metriod ...... you really cant think Nintendo hasn't builted up strong brand Loyalty their hardware isn't top of the line but people love the games they put out and come back year after year. While this may work for hand-helds the console market is very different, Nintendo just hasn't has strong thrid party support to really complete with Sony and M$.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8*cries and runs away screaming* T_T
- supremesonic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I sort of want to do the reverse, and put a DS in some sort of PSP case. Then look at the reactions when I show it to people...
"Aw, you bought a PSP? They're so lame, I don... OMG IT'S A DS!" or something like that. Seems DS really is destroying PSP in every single way after reading that, though. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yes we must not forget about "Krazy" Ken Kutaragi - Hilarious!
- isayx3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not brand loyalty. They are kids, they like what is "cool". For example if you come to school with the best mp3 ever made and if it's not an iPod then no one will give a crap.
Good marketing yes, but not brand loyalty. If it was brand loyalty then it would be "cool" to own a gamecube :) - MulanLang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ fpsgamer: As funny as your comment was, remember that Snake is not solely a made-for-Sony character and is also on Nintendo platforms in the form of MGS: Twin Snakes. He is also featured in the upcoming Super Smash Bros: Brawl
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There's also Phil Harrison, but he scares the hell out of me. Everytime I look at him, his face just screams "hitman."
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I would have cried too.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I love it when people things like "Why do we care?".
Probably the same reason as any human being cares about anything else....because we do. - nikkesen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Animal Crossing is mega kawaii (cute). It's also a good game in concept.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oh, I understand that Catachresis. It was the same way (over here in NJ anyway). What i'm talking about is the brand name and kids. Like real kids, not teenagers. You can't mention Nintendo to a kid without their face lighting up. Well, mine did anyway. =D
