- Incidents, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Well this isn't really an accomplishment because Sony didn't add any security revisions with this update. The update just added PSX game compatibility + [Reset Game] options.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14There are a few hundred PSP games, actually.
Also, the fact you can pirate games doesn't really kill sales. PC, games are fairly easy to pirate. DS, easy to pirate. PSP, fairly easy. PS2, easy with a modchip.
Piracy might make a small dent, but not a massive one. - glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You obviously don't know how to use it then.
I have 8 PSP games on my psp (compressd .csos) SNES Emulator, GBA Emulator, Universal Remote, Movies, PlayStation 1 games, and so much more. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Try putting on one of the custom firmwares, then.
PSPs can do a lot. - glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nothing is "uncrackable"
- astroboiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You'd be surprised just how many useful apps there actually are.
I lost my remote for the tv in my room... universal remote came out =D
always wanted a gps system... MAP THIS came out and now you can use the psp gps with it instead of just downloading maps
ability to watch self encoded videos in full screen (before this was only allowed with UMD-dvd's)
There's plenty more whose interest will depend on the individual. But the point is, trust me homebrew single handedly saved this little device....
maybe good games were going to come out later and save it... but honestly it wasn't looking so good before the wonderful world of hombrew =D.
also the mere idea of being able to play nes, mame, neo geo, gb,vba, gba, neo geo pocket, sega master system, psx, snes,(SCUMM ) should bring tears to any fanboii's eyes. Love Live the Homebrew scene! - alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah. kudos indeed.
- TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I do, practically every day. Having 3.10 OE-A does wonders for it :) And no, not because of the piracy. I don't actually play Pirated PSP games on it, it's great knowing you can play any game you've bought and STILL play all the homebrew you want. Brilliant stuff!
- shampoovta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Finely Sony has figured out how to get positive posts on digg.
- 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3QJ is the best site for the psp homebrew scene... not some "***** blog" If you dont like the topic, ignore it, dont post a comment.... Troll...
and dammit, i JUST upgraded to 3.10oe-a guess 3.11oe-a will be available by the time i get home from work today.. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Xbox was incredibly easy to modchip, and yet it was fairly successful.
- spikes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have 5 bought PSP games, including MGS Portable Ops that I have yet to play, as I spend all my PSP time playing SNES and using the POPS PSX emulator enjoying some good old FF7. My PSP gathered dust before this. :)
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@dvdcpu.
You can pirate games easily for any gaming system. Xbox 360, ps3, PC and it hasn't "scared developers away" - damagemanual, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No one finds it a bit odd that all this effort and time goes into making a $200+ game machine play 10+ year old games?
How many people use these firmware hacks for honest to god home-brew applications and not just to emulate old games? I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, I'd really like to know. - jockser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3only because of home brew i use my psp
- danwhalley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3my psp gathered dust for 8 months, i own a fair collection of games but they were expensive and the playability was short lived.. then along came 3.02e... hurrah... now i can play homebrew and i've had the psp out every day since. I think now the psp is hackable, more units will sell - it's a much more desireable object all of a sudden! Yes, I'll still buy a game if I like it, but at least now I can try before I buy.. case in point - spongebob squarepants game.. it wasn't available for rent in Blockbusters so I had no way of testing it (well my son actually)... I was unwilling to pay full price for it in case it was rubbish. Turns out that it IS rubbish... so I'm happy that I didn't buy it, I'll spend my money on another game instead.
- dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wish Sony would spend their development dollars on games rather than firmware. Obviously the PSP community, given time, will crack whatever they put out there. EMBRACE IT SONY! Know your audience. Work on games that will sell systems. Right now, people do not want to buy games because it will ruin their PSP with firmware updates.
I - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish my mortage was that cheap!
- abcdefghij, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gave my PSP (one of the very 1st gen straight from jp) to brother abt two yrs ago.. now im buying another one for me cos now my brother has abt 6-7 gigs of homebrews, and of course, other stuff like archived games :D
like good old Martha would say, "it's a good thing!" - caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well you could read the previous 100 posts first before asking.. but i will tell you anyway..
with firmware crack you can... run homebrew applications such as SNES, NES, GENESIS, etc. Emulators, a ton of apps such as a universal remote, beat machine, gps maps, and much more.
you can.. play PSP games from your memory stick..
you can.. play PS1 games from you memory stick that you have ripped and compressed.
did i miss anything?
I play my PSP almost everyday (on the train, on the john, at work ) , I just broke my addiction to Luminies II and I am playing PS1 MGS, and PS1 Super Puzzle Fighter (all three of which are on my memory stick, plus Street FIghter for SNES and a slew of NES games), I have 10 or so PSP games on my hard drive that I can switch out when i want. I have a 2gig memory stick that allows me to never use that stupid UMD drive, and now I can access it all through the menu (before you would have to go through a secondary program) although i do carry burnout in it just for variety.
i enjoy the psp a lot, and I use it more than I have ever used a hand held. Its to bad that the publishers are putting out piss poor games buggy games, with the exception of a select few that are really fun. thats all.
on a side note has anyone played Call of Duty 3 on Wii.. What a buggy game? I mean I got a hard crash, that is just unacceptable, rushing games for launch is never a good idea. I am glad Mario and Metroid are taking their time. what what was I talking about again.. my adderall must be kicking in. - caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no no no.. that's "die sony, die" .. it is German.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@damagemanual
I bought a PSP earlier this week just because you can now play PSX isos on it. The games may be 10 years old, but that was the highest point in gaming. It was a relief to have new franchises, as Nintendo was just starting to milk Mario and friends for everything they got. - cg0def, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2all I need to know is when ( if ever ) will sony get a clue? There's no point encrypting something if it can be decrypted in no time. Plus what point exactly does encrypting the PSP firmware have? So what if 5% of all PSP owners would run pirated software?
- ptaylor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm not really for Sony, but I think that it's time to really focus on the dealling with the PS3's issues. Crackers has pwned the PSP. It's over Sony.
- Magog29, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a psp when it first came out and was very disappointed with it. Got rid of it before I heard of the homebrew side of life. Let me make sure I am understanding this correctly, FW3.11 means you can play all the new games and still run your homebrew on it?
- dvdcpu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It's true that modding makes the PSP more desirable, however it scares developers away if they know their games can be easily pirated.
- Galefw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so what does the firmware crack do for me? Saying if I had it... What would be so good about it?
- jabberwock1977, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Haha.... 'kudos' :)
- zapbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HAHA I BEAT EM TO IT AND ON MY OWN stoopid newbs
LOCKS ARE TO KEEP THE HONEST PERSON OUT .. NOT THE PRO'S - silver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm more interested on whether I can run homebrew on this or downgrade to 1.5.
1.5 versions of PSP's are getting harder to find in the UK.
After that, some way of using cheaper media formats instead of forking over half your mortgage for a 2GB memory stick would be nice. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5If it's not much of an accomplishment, why tell us about it? I agree that if it's a significant crack that it's newsworthy, but this is akin to "New game came out on the 360, firmware hacks still work"
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3^ Yes, for all the people that use homebrew and don't check homebrew sites daily. Also it adds a lot more people to the homebrew community.
I agree it's not much of an accomplishment as they didnt crack it at all. The keys are identical to 3.10 so it was cracked the instant it was released - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Does QJ just spam digg for every mundane PSP development step?
All 4 of ktanuki's submissions have been for QJ. I suspect they are spamming Digg to drive traffic to their ***** blog. - XGothamX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1DIE SONY DIE (Gotham Dances in a circle singing im a maniac MANIAC on the floor!)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6While I think these stories have more merrit than many frontpage stories, do we really need to know that they've cracked every single tiny firmware update, regardless of if said update added new securoty features or not?
- pwallroth, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5People still use PSP's? Mine is collecting dust.
- dvdcpu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Is it still neutered?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+2I really do wish that these people would stop this or that Sony would make it uncrackable. No wonder there are so few PSP games - no developer or publisher could commit to this platform unless they were sure their product wasn't going to become a victim of piracy.
These hackers are doing everyone a disservice.
