- readme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Sony should just stop making firmwares. DAX has it covered from here on out.
- ArveeOnFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19If they did, D_A would not have any firmwares to patch.
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16The psp scene would be non-existent without Dark Alex
- cesarandreu, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24Dar_Alex > God
- user123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Granted. Without Dark Alex we wouldn't have the ability to play the PS1 games we own already (which are obviously quite compatible). Would you rather wait for Sony to continue slowly releasing games that only PS3 owners can access?
- jaytea90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10at least spell out the guy-you're-worshiping's name correctly
- sphinx13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just meant that Sony needs to continue making firmware or DAX won't be able to add their features to his future firmwares. An no I wouldn't rather that happen. I have ripped several of my old PSX games to the PSP and have been playing them.
- JazzFlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The new full res movie feature is great.
BUT:
At the moment, using sleep mode in MGS:PO is broken. If you try to return from sleep mode it will freeze on a black screen. This seems to be only in the menus, if you go into sleep mode during the mission, it'll be fine.
Dark Alex knows about the issue and is looking into it, from what I know.
I'm not sure if the sleep mode problem affects other games (Lumines II was fine), just something to look out for. - raiderj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I wonder if the PSP would have been more successful if it had been marketed as an ultraportable PSX rather than a completely new system. Or at least as a powerful system that supports homebrew, much like the GP-32.
- glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Only a matter of weeks, I couldnt downgrade my 2.71 TA-082 when I got it and by the next day D_A had released a patch.
- RoboticClone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@xelloss
Bookmark the page this article is from, I find that it has ALL the major PSP scene updates. Great site - JazzFlight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If Sony had done that (and never started restricting homebrew), they would have sold a lot more PSPs.
However, game sales would have declined because PSP game ISOs would have been more prevalent.
IIRC, Sony was losing money on hardware sales (cost more to produce than sell for), so it wouldn't have been good for them. - futaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What are people using to encode 480x272 MP4-AVC's???
- martinj88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4One of the reasons the PS1 became so popular was because of how easy it was to pirate games for it, I don't think I knew anyone who didn't have at least 1 pirated game.
- Dmel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DARK ALEX is my Hero.
No sh#@, really, he is my friggin hero. - richpav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd love to upgrade my son's PSP, but I'm afraid of turing it into a brick, which would make him cry, and my wife would never have sex with me ever again for making him cry. Is there a be-all-end-all, sure-fire, idiot-proof tutorial for flashing the firmware, or should I simply not play with fire? (And no, getting another wife isn't an option, unless she's willing to pay off the morgage.)
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I understand peoples pre-flashing fears, as the risk of bricking does exist. But provided you follow the instructions properly, do not do anything completely moronic (i.e. tearing the battery pack out halfway through the process) and MOST IMPORTANTLY, obtain your downgraders / FW upgrades / etc *only* from trusted, tried and proved sources, there is extremely little chance of doing any permanent damage to your PSP.
You are at a much higher risk (and have a lot more at stake) everytime you jump behind the wheel of a car, yet it is something almost everybody does on a daily basis! - HeyArnold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hey, check out www.psp-hacks.com. All the info you'd need is there. There's a pretty good chance you can flash your PSP. There are a few things you can look out for, all of which are covered on the site.
- tydev417, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I held out on 2.80 for some time and finally gave in to 3.00 and surely not too long after, D_A released a 2.80 downgrader.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps. In fact the PSP has far better graphics than the PSX and does better than the PS2 in some areas. If only a lot of things...
Sony has been really stupid with one thing after another. Almost none of the neato features they've put in the PSP now couldn't have been added since the onset. - glasgowm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Newsflash; you can play ripped UMD games on this firmware, thats the whole point. psx emulator is just a bonus.
ps; DA has included a recovery menu in 3.02 OE-A so bricks are pretty much non-existent now. - RoboticClone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If Sony had made the PSP homebrew ready, I could tell you right now it would be able to put up a good fight against the DS. And the GP-32 would prolly also gain some more attention as a result.
- dvsbastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are several steps involved in the process, but that doesn't necessarily equate to more chance of bricking your PSP. You will find most of the applications released contain validation to ensure that you don't damage your PSP (in the event that you do something wrong). They don't protect against blatant stupidity, but they will stop you from making any minor mistakes.
@Kypt
Just because someone is running custom FW it doesn't mean they are using it for piracy (although there is a good chance others are). What you do in your spare time is not my business, but I always say "Support the developers" ! :) - bignate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Forgive my n00bness. The extent of my PSP hacking involved loading the GTA exploit to run homebrew off my 2.7 PSP a while back.
With this custom firmware can you run any homebrew straight from the OS, wthout having to do any exploits? Can anyone post a link to a guide on how to install this thing or whether it's safe for PSP's with newer firmware than 1.5? - magical1492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, there is a VERY slim chance of bricking, but the only reason that would happen is if the power went out while it was writing the new firmware.
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Worth it? To a lot of people who don't want to pay for games (right or wrong I'm keeping that topic off my post) the risk is WAYworth it. All you need is a PSP and a big enough memory card. You said u paid 250 for ur PSP, pay another 50 for a 2GB memcard, that's 300. Now you have access to every single game released for the PSP. You download, stick 'em on your card and that PSP price won't escalate with more games.
PS1 games and emulators are nice, but a majority of users are in it for the psp isos. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have a 2.7 psp the process is pretty safe. I've downgraded->upgraded so many of 'em by now that i no longer hold my breath in the process. As long as you follow directions you should be fine.
Yes, witht his firmware you run the isos straight from the OS as well as the PS1 games. Hell the icon animations for hte games will be identical to the ones u see when u insert same game on the UMD drive. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know its not always the case, but a vast majority of people are using it solely for the iso capabilities of it. Now I have 3.03 OE-B. I use it for ISOs and PS1, yet do buy games I really enjoy. I don't like to spend 40 bucks on a game just to realize its utter crap. So far I've bought Megaman Powered up, Lumines, and VP: Lenneth. As soon as I get paid I'm buying Killzone and maybe Daxter, not sure yet. Now these games I've already played and finished, but since I really enjoyed them, they're going to get my money.
- Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think you are looking in right places....there's a tutorial section on pretty much all the sites. The forums @ http://www.psp-hacks.com an awesome Tutorial section. If you are unable to comprehend the instructions in those tutorials the PSP homebrew scene will never be open for you.
Now, with that said, it is good that you would rather buy games for the sake of supporting the games and props to you with that attitude. - zenstrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While there were a lot of worries about bricking in the earlier days, these newer custom firmware packages are MUCH more stable. Besides not allowing you to even run the program if your battery is below a safe level (unless you CHOOSE to ignore the warning), the updater checks the integrity of the files on your memory stick against a checksum to make sure they weren't corrupted somehow and even includes a recovery mode in case you somehow mess it up. I really can't remember reading about anyone that bricked their PSP as a result of these newer 3.02/3.03 OE firmwares (not that it hasn't happened.) Charge up your battery and follow the instructions; the chances of it being bricked are probably under 2%. If all goes well (and it should), you won't regret it. :)
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They stop making firmwares, Piracy runs rampant, PSP goes the way of the Dreamcast (not dead but not for sale either).

- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Trust your news source, that's all I can say.
- Xyleene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^Response to stealthgear... forgot to hit reply
I had a similar experience... but I read up ALOT and decided to take the plunge... everything worked out great and in the end it was pretty easy. I don't regret it one bit.
The thing I found most frustrating was that there was no section explaining the concepts outright. All it has to be is a one-two pager with all the terminology definitions on it and I would have save so much time. I'll try to throw one together if I can find the time. Once I figured out the concepts the tutorials were acceptable.. but before that I was lost. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Kypt
I'm in it purely for the PSX ISOs now, I might DL MGS:PO tho, I hear it's not too bad. Last game I enjoyed palying on it was Loco Roco and that got old after a week. - xqb4dpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seriously, my pal has a 2.81 and he's suck too ..its horrid - theres no exploits ...
- scottjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably not. alex doesn't include sony's psp firmware in the archives to prevent any sort of lawsuit from sony. he leaves it up to you to get them.
but the installer has many checks through the process, evaluating checksums along the way. if the files don't add up. it won't flash them. if your battery is low, it won't flash.
as long as you can read instructions (README.TXT files) it's pretty simple. just read them a few times through to understand what you need to do.
then there are always forums if you're still confused.. - Unique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a TA-082 with 2.71 when i bought it... Was happy when i found out I could run devhook via a tiff exploit... Then not to long after that Dark Alex made a 2.71 to 1.5 downgrader and then i upgraded to his costom firmware I now run his 3.03 OE-B and man this thing is so AWESOME!
- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use the Xilisoft PSP video converter (which only lets you encode 5 minutes of video until you purchase it) or go the free route and use PSP Video 9. Both work great, but I prefer the first one.
- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha why would you upgrade .01 when you could update to .00 which is probably less secure but still has the same features..?
- sifijg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0will there be an ultimate installer for this? I have a 1.5 with devhook and am a bit scared :-o
- DUDEineedhelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dous anyone know how i can use a custom firmware without bricking my psp. ANYTHING you know about this i must know!! Please.
- daboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1but will it blend?
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Anynews on a 2.81 downgrader, stuck at that atm :(
- helldragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love this firmware
- sphinx13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9The only problem with that is that DAX's firmwares are based off of Sony's, so without Sony we wouldn't have a PSX emulator built into the firmware.
- JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2does anyone else find this stuff, though nifty, not worth the risk? what are the gains? play ur ps1 games on it? play home brew and old games like super mario brothers? if you could somehow use firmware that D_A is making to rip the psp games directly from the UMDs to the psp, then i'd say cool, and that it would be worth it...otherwise though, for me at least, it isnt worth it. I'm glad and envious to hear that some of ya'all are getting so much use and having so much fun with ur psp now that you've switched over to D_A's firmware...but i cant justify the risk of winding up having to go to my pop and telling him that i bricked a 250 buck device just to do a bunch of stuff on it that i could have already done on my snes or ps1
